SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Modernist Glass from the Polish Past
DESCRIPTION:The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass)\, the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. We are grateful to them for making this remarkable exhibit possible at CCPS and WCEE.\n\nOrganized by the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies\, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design and Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia.\n\nLearn more about the exhibition and the artists at https://myumi.ch/8eVrM\n\nThe exhibit opens on September 15\, 2023 in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact copernicus@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:My Gender States
DESCRIPTION:On display at Lane Hall\, Rogério M. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States\,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \n\nUsing autoethnography\, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Marília\,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead\,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas\, gender states\, and his life experience—a story of the struggles\, fears\, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm\,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto’s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he\, a queer immigrant\, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials\, images\, and texts from \"Marília\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Collected are portrayals of Pinto’s gender states\, gender confusion\, gender embodiments\, gender doubt\, and reactions to gender stigma. \n\nRogério M. Pinto (Brazilian\, American\, b. 1965\, Belo Horizonte\, Brazil) is a University Diversity Social Transformation Professor\; Berit Ingersoll-Dayton Collegiate Professor of Social Work\; and Professor of Theatre and Drama\, School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, at the University of Michigan. Pinto uses art-based methods to conduct community-engaged research in the United States and Brazil.\n\nThe photographs used in \"My Gender States\" are by Emerson Granillo (American\, b. 1987)\; David Newton (American\, b. 1993)\; and Nicholas Williams (American\, b. 1994). The \"Realm\" assemblages featured in \"My Gender States\" were conceived by Pinto and designed by him\, in collaboration with Sarah Tanner. \n\n\"My Gender States\" is on display in the Lane Hall Exhibit Space (first floor\, 204 S State St) from January 23\, to August 13\, 2024. The exhibit is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.\n\nHosted by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women’s and Gender Studies Department.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Orson Welles as Family Man: Son\, Husband\, Father
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit provides a unique glimpse into the actor/director Orson Welles’ private life. Unlike previous U-M Library exhibits that focused on the artist at work\, this display shows him in informal and familial environments\, revealing a depth and complexity of character that are often overshadowed by his fame and professional achievements. The photographs and documents displayed showcase a variety of emotional tones — warmth\, humor\, tenderness\, and passion. Candid and relaxed more than posed\, they are similar to most people's pictures in old family albums.\n\nCulled from the Orson Welles-Beatrice Welles materials that are part of the Mavericks & Makers collection within the U-M Library’s Special Collections Research Center\, each photo or letter tells a story of a connection Welles held dearly. The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s\, when Welles was a teenager\, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s\, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife\, Paola Mori. \n\nIt should be noted that Welles’s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages\, including the Welles-Feder Collection and the Wilson-Welles Collection. The items on display here were saved by his third and final child\, Beatrice Welles\, and reflect her childhood memories of her parents.\n\nThe exhibit is available during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://umlib.us/hatchergalleryexhibits).

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Peter Dunn Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Peter Dunn has historically been an object maker as a designer and sculptor. Whether designing furniture or developing the ideas for sculpture\, the process has always been the same. Ideas begin as\nscribbled images that are then stretched and refined with CAD software. At its core\, much of the work studies the manipulation of simple geometry. Dunn looks at the form from different forced perspectives – exploding\, augmenting\, slicing\, repeating\, and lighting. This body of work is a study of perception\, sympathy\, hierarchy\, and reality. The “We Are Virus” series is an adaptation from an initial design where it continued to evolve and adapt through manipulation of parts and scale.\n\nPeter Dunn received his BFA from Wayne State University and MFA from University of Michigan. He currently serves on faculty at College for Creative Studies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Take Your Time
DESCRIPTION:Artist Enrico Riley is best known for paintings that investigate violence and hope in cultural traditions in African American culture. His new work—created for his exhibition at the Institute for the Humanities Gallery—is personal and abstract. Started as an attempt to paint for himself\, away from the center of things and off at the edges\, they are from the spaces of private thought that slip into existence and just as easily slip away. They come from an internal conversation and contact with the world. \"When I am with them\,\" Riley explains\, \"I feel a tension between the spaces in the works being present but unnamed. The paintings allow me to observe myself looking. I am acutely aware of time. Maybe they are an invitation to speculate.\"

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andrea Carlson Future Cache
DESCRIPTION:In Andrea Carlson Future Cache\, a 40-foot-tall memorial wall towers over visitors\, commemorating the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians who were violently burned from their land in Northern Michigan on October 15\, 1900. Written across the walls above and around the memorial\, a statement proclaims Anishinaabe rights to the land we stand on: “You are on Anishinaabe Land.”  \n \nPresented alongside are paintings of imagined decolonized landscapes and a symbolic cache of provisions. Future Cache implicitly asks those who have benefited from the legacies of colonization to consider where they stand and where to go from here and seeks to foster a sense of belonging for displaced Indigenous peoples fighting for restitution.\n\nSpecial thanks to the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians\, Margaret Noodin\, and Richard A. Wiles\, for their consultation on the State Historical Marker text\; to Margaret Noodin and Michael Zimmerman\, Jr. for translating the gallery texts into Anishinaabemowin\; to James Horton and Fritz Swanson for generously producing the letterpress broadsides\; to colleagues at the U-M Biological Station\, U-M Museum of Anthropological Archaeology\, U-M Clements Library\, and U-M Clark Map Library. For more information on the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians visit BurtLakeBand.org. \n\nLead support for Future Cache is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, Erica Gervais Pappendick and Ted Pappendick\, and the U-M Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cannupa Hanska Luger: You're Welcome
DESCRIPTION:How Do We Remember? \n \nMemories are deeply embedded in the physical structures of modern day society — our neighborhoods\, our laws\, our monuments\, our buildings — but those memories are often sculpted and built into those structures by a privileged few. How have their perspectives shaped the enduring stories of our history and visions of the past?\n \nYou’re Welcome is a three-part installation and dynamic intervention that exposes the histories and narratives of the land occupied by the University of Michigan and UMMA’s neoclassical building\, Alumni Memorial Hall. A large-scale commission from artist Cannupa Hanska Luger on the exterior of UMMA’s building asks the campus and community to reconsider the memories molded into the Museum’s stone — the perspectives that shaped those traditions and the stories that remain unseen in our facade. This artistic interrogation dissects colonialist norms of monument-making\, explores the roles of buildings in upholding selected cultural systems\, and develops new forms of memorials that center Indigenous perspectives and collaboration to tell fuller stories and histories. \n \nLuger communicates stories of 21st-century Indigeneity\, sovereignty\, and anti-colonialism while offering critical cultural analysis through deep engagements with materials\, environments\, and communities. In addition to the exterior commission\, a gallery exhibition places Luger’s works of art in conversation with objects in UMMA’s collection\, allowing for discussion and thinking on long histories of collecting practices\, environmental degradation\, and the afterlife of colonialism. And\, a monument classroom from nonprofit public art and history studio Monument Lab invites the community to come together and examine how historic structures on the University of Michigan’s campus uphold social and cultural systems and narratives.  \n\nLead support for this project is provided by Teiger Foundation\, the U-M Office of the Provost\, the U-M Office of the President\, Erica Gervais Pappendick and Ted Pappendick\, the U-M Marsal Family School of Education\, the U-M Institute for the Humanities\, Michigan Humanities\, and the U-M Arts Initiative. Additional generous support is provided by Melissa Kaish and Jonathan Dorfman. \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Curriculum / Collection
DESCRIPTION:In Curriculum / Collection\, an incredible variety of University of Michigan courses take material form. Collected for each course are objects that address the nature of materiality\, time\, and human interaction in relation to our environments\, our wars\, our relationships\, and our eccentricities. \n \nWorking in collaboration with University faculty\, the works in this exhibition were selected for their capacity to provoke engagement with the guiding questions and themes of their specific courses\, while also offering students inspiration for research and art projects in their areas of study. The exhibition demonstrates some of the diverse and creative ways art plays a central role in learning across the disciplines. It also asks us to consider what we can learn from art objects across an infinite variety of specialties and subject matter.\n \nAs classes begin in Fall of 2021\, you’ll be able to use these pages to explore the collections designed for each course\, dive into the works themselves\, and hear from the professors and students about how they are engaging with art and objects in new ways. Who knows\, maybe you’ll learn something surprising along the way\, too.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Erica Gervais Pappendick and Ted Pappendick\, and the Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund\, and the Oakriver Foundation.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CSCS Seminar | Twists\, triangles\, and tentacles: A guided tour of high-dimensional basins in networked dynamical systems
DESCRIPTION:Coffee and snacks will be provided. This talk will be recorded for later viewing.\n\nAbstract: In this talk\, I will explore the interesting geometries that emerge in high-dimensional attraction basins\, which are important in applications such as protein folding\, cell differentiation\, and neural networks. Using simple networks of coupled oscillators\, I will show that high-dimensional basins are generally highly nonconvex and nonlocal\, with most of the basin volume concentrated in tentacle-like structures. Next\, I will show that introducing non-pairwise interactions in the network can make basins deeper but smaller—the attractors become linearly more stable but much harder to find due to basins shrinking dramatically. I will end with a few applications to neuroscience.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Photovoice: Visualizing Engineering Identity Experiences
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Researchers have shown that students are most likely to leave engineering undergraduate programs during their first two years. Justifiably\, several studies have investigated engineering student persistence and attrition\, especially during the first year\, and then informed the development of interventions to address the challenges. While those interventions have improved freshmen retention in some institutions\, less has been published on the impacts of these interventions on the sophomore student experience. In this study\, we examined the experiences of sophomore engineering students and explored how these experiences relate to their identities as engineers. We conducted this study using photovoice\, a methodology/intervention in which participants submit photographs to help describe their experiences and give recommendations on improving their experiences and resolving their concerns. Through empowering participants to co-construct the knowledge\, we were able to see what interest\, competence\, and recognition as engineers looked like from the student’s perspectives. This work has the potential to yield practical solutions that institutional stakeholders can implement\, such as intentionally creating cultures of well-being\, self-reflection\, and belonging.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar Series - Matters of Scale in the Ecology and Evolution of Coexisting Species
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our ongoing Thursday Seminar Series.\n\nPreview: Germain's lab is anchored by coexistence theories (old and new) which we use to understand how ecological processes interact across scales\, and then\, how our ecological insights can be applied to better understand evolution (e.g.\, rescue\, speciation\, character displacement\, etc.). Germain's talk will be divided between two themes: how ecological processes interact across scales to shape species persistence and biodiversity patterns and how evolutionary processes vary spatially\, as well as how they scale up from individuals to populations to species within diverse natural communities. Their work is rooted in serpentine grasslands of Northern California\, a biodiversity hotspot with a predominance of annual plant species and abrupt environmental transitions.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Department of Astronomy 2023-2024 Colloquium Series Presents:
DESCRIPTION:\"Exo-Jupiters: The Movers and Shakers of Planetary Systems\"\n\nUnderstanding what formation processes produce the extraordinary diversity of planetary systems that we see today is one of the driving questions in the field. Of all the new planets that have been discovered\, gas giants are the easiest ones for us to find – they are bigger\, brighter\, and more massive than any other kind of planet. This means that they are ideal targets for characterization techniques that can tell us about the planet formation process\, and they are so massive that they dominate the dynamics of their systems\, impacting the formation of other planets. Gas giants are an obvious place for us to start if we want to learn about the physics of planet formation.\n\nIn this talk I will describe my work using multiple observational techniques to explore the formation and evolution of gas giants. I will discuss how targeting directly imaged planets with high-resolution spectroscopy enables measurements of new planetary properties like rotation rates\, obliquities\, and detailed atmospheric abundances. These provide fundamental insights into the physics of gas giant formation\, such as the evolution of planetary angular momentum. I will describe how leveraging high-contrast imaging techniques to look for planets in their infancy rules out gravitational scattering as the origin of wide-separation gas giants\, and constrains the timing of gas giant formation and migration. I will also talk about how radial velocity searches for Jupiter analogs in systems with known inner planets reveal the impact gas giants have on the inner architectures of planetary systems\, and are a key step in the search for life on other planets. Finally\, I will highlight the important role that the next-generation Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) will have in extending these high-resolution spectroscopy measurements to directly imaged ice giant and terrestrials worlds\, opening new windows into their formation histories and enabling searches for biosignatures in their atmospheres.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Advancing the logic of polymer synthesis\, modification\, and degradation
DESCRIPTION:The polymer backbone is fundamental to the polymer’s identity and properties. My seminar will focus on the development of metathesis mechanisms to access heteroatom-rich polymer backbones\, new editing tools to transform existing polymer backbones into different ones\, and both strategies and tactics to depolymerize commodity polymeric materials into valuable small molecules. Specifically\, I will discuss iridium-guanidinate catalyzed ring-opening metathesis of cyclic carbodiimides and the current directions toward diazene metathesis\, as well as an array of rearrangement transformations—including Ireland-Claisen and aza-Cope—applied to edit the backbones of polymers. Besides the focus on polymer backbones\, retrosynthetic logic applied to polymeric materials will be another common thread woven throughout this seminar\, as it is a central element of the research in the Zhukhovitskiy group.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Commutative Algebra Seminar: Standard monomial theory modulo Frobenius in characteristic two
DESCRIPTION:Over a field of characteristic zero\, standard monomial theory and Young tableaux provide a connection between determinantal ideals of polynomial rings and irreducible representation theory of GL_n. In this talk\, we present work towards developing an analogous theory over a field of characteristic two by working modulo a Frobenius power. As a result\, we obtain modular GL_n-representations whose characters are given by particular truncated Schur polynomials\, thus proving a conjecture by Gao-Raicu-VandeBogert in the characteristic two case. This is joint work with Laura Casabella.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: Listening to the Water\, Capping a Verse: What Enslaved Women Did in the Medieval Mediterranean
DESCRIPTION:What did enslaved women do in the medieval Mediterranean? The usual answer has been domestic work\, but the field of slavery studies is in the midst of a historiographical turn toward the importance of sexual and reproductive labor. Enslaved women certainly performed these types of labor in medieval Mediterranean contexts\, and Professor Barker will introduce some of the sources that enable historians to understand these aspects of their enslavement. She will also argue that the framework of domestic\, sexual\, and reproductive labor remains insufficient to express the full range of enslaved women’s activities.\n\nHannah Barker is an associate professor of medieval history at Arizona State University. She studies connections between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean during the late medieval period\, especially the slave trade and the transmission of plague leading to the Black Death. Her book\, That Most Precious Merchandise: The Mediterranean Trade in Black Sea Slaves\, 1260-1500\, was published in 2019. It received the Paul E. Lovejoy Prize and the ASU Institute for Humanities Research book prize\, as well as honorable mentions for the Mediterranean Seminar’s Wadjih F. al-Hamwi Prize and the Middle East Medievalists book prize.\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Hanes Walton Lecture. The United Racisms of America: Conceptualizing\, Measuring and Understanding Anti-Black Human Rights Violations\, 1860-2010
DESCRIPTION:A great deal has been discussed about the different types and degrees of violence\discrimination directed against African Americans since they were brought to the United States. Unfortunately\, the work on this topic has largely been fragmented. We thus have separate literatures on slavery\, lynching\, Jim Crow (old and new)\, police violence\, disenfranchisement\, incarceration\, police violence and hate crimes. Despite suggestions that these are all manifestations of a singular underlying phenomenon\, there is very little empirical effort directed toward testing such an idea. Drawn from a larger research project on the consequences of racial violence funded by the Research Council of Norway\, the current talk explores whether and to what degree distinct forms of anti-Black human rights violations fit together in a coherent sense as well as how they vary across space and time. These data will not only shed much light on what was done to African Americans between the years 1860 and 2010 but it will also facilitate systematic evaluations of when things began to get worse and better\, what was the relative intensity of violations\, how long did bad/good periods last\, what are the legacies/consequences of anti-Black human rights violations as well as where efforts should be made to address PTSD\, reconciliation and/or reparations. This effort will also assist in the creation of a grand accounting of what has taken place by allowing individuals throughout the United States to provide their stories and archival material regarding what they experienced.\n\nThis event will not be live-streamed\, but a recording will be later shared.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC/CM Seminar | Diagrammatic methods for dynamic observables - Planckian scaling in the 2D Hubbard model
DESCRIPTION:Leveraging the power of algorithmic Matsubara integration (AMI) we can generate results for virtually any diagrammatic expansion. These solutions can be stored symbolically and analytically continued to the real frequency axis. These advancements provide unprecedented access to correlation functions for both single and many-particle properties and have the potential to be applied to extension of density functional theory. However\, the path to the general application of these ideas is fraught with technical hurdles. We will review progress in diagrammatic methods as a whole and present calculations from our group in that context for the Jellium and 2D Hubbard models and discuss extensions to generalized multiband problems.\n\nIn particular our methodology provides access to response functions such as the optical conductivity. We will present a study of the frequency and temperature dependence of the optical conductivity in the weakly coupled two-dimensional Hubbard model using a renormalized perturbative expansion. The resulting conductivity shows a linear power law behaviour in the intermediate frequency regime. Moreover\, the associated transport scattering time and renormalized mass exhibit a Planckian behaviour. We show that the self-energy of the Hubbard model\, however\, is distinct from existing Planckian models yet gives rise to the same features in the conductivity.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Dyn/Geo/Top: On the Moving Sofa Problem
DESCRIPTION:Modeling the situation of moving furniture around\, the moving sofa problem asks for the maximum area of a planar shape that can move around the corner in an L-shaped hallway of width 1. The problem was posed by Leo Moser in 1966\, and the best known lower bound of 2.2195... was proved by Gerver in 1994\, by constructing a sofa whose boundary consists of 18 special curves. While it is conjectured that Gerver's sofa attains the maximum area\, the best published upper bound of 2.37 was proved by Kallus and Romik in 2018 using computer assistance.\n\nImproving upon the computer-assisted approach of Kallus and Romik\, we improve the upper bound to 2.32. Moreover\, without any computer assistance\, we prove a conceptually new upper bound of $1 + \pi^2/8$ = 2.2337... that is much closer to the lower bound of Gerver\, on a large subset of shapes which includes Gerver's sofa. We also discuss the possibility of making the upper bound of 2.2337... unconditional by building upon the approaches of the two results.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Imagination or Insurrection: Reparations and Racial Value
DESCRIPTION:This talk goes beyond fiscal interventions on the topic of reparations. I am thinking through three distinct philosophical threads: Alain Locke’s ‘value theory\,’ Leonard Harris’ ‘insurrectionist ethics\,’ and Drucilla Cornell’s ‘imaginary domain.’ My purpose is to argue that a philosophical reading outside of fiscal interventions is to redefine how we critique Black social value through the intricacies of resistance\, occupancy of space\, and full citizenship for those who are historically racialized as Black. Therefore\, I will be looking at the art of talking back an ethical undertaking that will inform the reparative justice that will see Black people as fully humanized subjects. Arguably\, to think this through is to Imagine a domain of Black futurity and value.\n\nThis is a hybrid event

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Penny Stamps Speaker Series - Sopheap Pich
DESCRIPTION:Sopheap Pich is widely considered to be Cambodia’s most internationally prominent contemporary artist. In 1979\, when the Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia led to the ousting of the Khmer Rouge regime\, he fled with his family to Thailand\, spending four years in refugee camps before immigrating to the United States. Memories of traveling vast distances on foot and witnessing the devastation of war—broken bodies\, ravaged landscapes\, abandoned artillery\, ruined buildings\, and the breakdown of social and cultural institutions—underpin his early sculptural practice. While Pich studied painting\, earning a BFA from the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst (1995)\, and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1999)\, he turned his attention to sculpture after returning to Cambodia in 2002 where he laboriously began working with local materials – bamboo\, old rafters\, rattan\, burlap\, beeswax\, broken utensils\, and earth pigments gathered from his local surroundings. Pich’s works have been collected and shown in many museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Guggenheim\, the Centre George Pompidou\, the Mori Art Museum\, M+\, and the National Gallery of Singapore\, as well as many international exhibitions including the 57th Venice Biennale (2017)\, Documenta 13 (2012)\, the 6th Asia Pacific Triennale (2009)\, the Setouchi Triennale (2022)\, and the Guangju Biennale (2023)\, among others. He lives and works in Phnom Penh\, Cambodia.\n\nPich’s work is featured in the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) exhibition Angkor Complex: Cultural Heritage and Post-Genocide Memory in Cambodia\, curated by U-M History of Art Professor Nachiket Chanchani and on view February 3 - July 2024. As crises of public health\, racial injustice\, economic instability\, and climate change spread worldwide\, millions are experiencing distress\, conflict\, indebtedness\, and vulnerability. This mélange of unnerving emotions is hardly new for Cambodians. Between 1975-1979\, when the Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia\, about a quarter of the country’s population died of infectious diseases\, weapon wounds\, and malnutrition. Bringing together more than eighty artworks spanning a millennium—including many on loan from collections worldwide—this landmark exhibition presents the visual culture of Cambodia and its diaspora and allows viewers to encounter the still-fresh scars of a genocide and of related upheavals and critically appreciate strategies evolved to nurture resilience.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Mapping the Sky: Celestial Coordinates from the Babylonians to Ptolemy
DESCRIPTION:Modern astronomers find the positions of celestial bodies in the sky using coordinate systems\, that uniquely identify the position of a celestial object (a planet\, a star\, a galaxy) through a pair of easily measurable angles. Now a common tool in modern science\, such coordinate systems have not been always available in the past\; rather\, they are the result of a long evolution which started as far back as the Babylonians in first millennium BCE. This talk will outline the history of celestial coordinates from their early beginning in ancient Babylon to their final establishment with Ptolemy (ca. 100-170 CE)\, with a special focus on the great innovations introduced by one of the greatest astronomers of the ancient world: Hipparchus of Nicaea (ca. 150 BCE).\n\n\n\nTalk begins at 7PM at the Detroit Observatory. Tours of the historic Detroit Observatory will be available after the talk\, including telescope observing\, if weather permits.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:CJS Winter 2024 Film Series | *Godzilla Minus One*
DESCRIPTION:Tickets may be purchased at: http://myumi.ch/byk8r\n \n Post-war Japan is at its lowest point when a new crisis emerges in the form of a giant monster\, baptized in the horrific power of the atomic bomb.\n \n Curator's note by Markus Nornes: Set in the ruins of 1946 Tokyo\, the newest *Godzilla* is immensely satisfying. After the disappointing American *Godzilla*s and Anno's quirky post-3.11 version\, *Godzilla Minus One* presents us with old-school *Godzilla* carnage and pleasures. The politics are as garbled as ever\, the story is peppered with charming cringe moments\, and the special effects are the best ever.\n \n This screening will take place on the FINAL DAY of *Godzilla Minus One*'s U.S. theatrical release.\n \n Presented in Japanese with English subtitles. Read more\n about the film\, including ratings\, at http://imdb.com/title/tt23289160/\n\nMore about the film series at https://michtheater.org/cjs-film-series-2024\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at wugou@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Performance:Dancing in Memory Burning
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Dance presents *Dancing in Memory Burning*\, on February 1 (7:30 pm)\, February 2 & 3 (8:00 pm) and February 4 (2:00 pm) at The Power Center for the Performing Arts.\n\nFour internationally recognized choreographers\, in collaboration with the BFA and MFA students in the Department of Dance\, premiere original works of choreography.\n\nRosanna Tavarez – *Rules of Interaction*\nCharli Brissey – *Time is a Thing a Body Moves Through*\nKyunghwa Hong – *Home Beyond the Mountains*\nAnanya Chatterjea – *Habibi Bhumi*\n\nIn each of the four dances\, a throughline of embodied mapping and memory is etched and revealed\, even as each work offers a profoundly unique vision. With palpable force\, the dancers are propelled by distinct questions and burning desires. How memories travel through time and bodies – how they are unfixed and fallible\, how they destroy and heal\, and implicate uncertain futures – is a shared thread.\n\nRosanna Tavarez is on the dance faculty at California Institute of the Arts and is a BFA alum of the U-M Dance department.\n\nProgram Preview:\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IR6m19A_Fok

SUMMARY:Performance:Kruger Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Extreme mountain music\n\nSome call it jazz. It has classical elements. Some call it bluegrass. Certainly the music of The Kruger Brothers (or\, for the umlaut-inclined\, The Krüger Brothers) is all of that and more. Experience what happens when these innovative and soulful world-class virtuosos put on one-of-a-kind performance that audiences find breathtaking and unforgettable. When you listen to the music of The Kruger Brothers\, you can't help but be amazed by the sheer depth of their artistry. Originally from Europe\, now living in North Carolina\, they were first introduced to American audiences in 1997\, quickly gaining the attention of fans and the music industry alike. Drawing on a rich cultural palette\, theirs is a music that celebrates the best of what music can be: exciting\, engaging\, intelligent\, and delightful.
