Known as Polskie szk\u0142o artystyczne (Polish art glass), the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \r\n\r\nThe collectors, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Krak\u00f3w. Scouring flea markets, antique shops, and websites, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. We are grateful to them for making this remarkable exhibit possible at CCPS and WCEE.\r\n\r\nOrganized by the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Penny W. In \"My Gender States,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \r\n\r\nUsing autoethnography, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Mar\u00edlia,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas, gender states, and his life experience\u2014a story of the struggles, fears, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto\u2019s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he, a queer immigrant, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials, images, and texts from \"Mar\u00edlia\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Collected are portrayals of Pinto\u2019s gender states, gender confusion, gender embodiments, gender doubt, and reactions to gender stigma. \r\n\r\nRog\u00e9rio M. Pinto (Brazilian, American, b. 1965, Belo Horizonte, Brazil) is a University Diversity Social Transformation Professor; Berit Ingersoll-Dayton Collegiate Professor of Social Work; and Professor of Theatre and Drama, School of Music, Theatre & Dance, at the University of Michigan. Pinto uses art-based methods to conduct community-engaged research in the United States and Brazil.\r\n\r\nThe photographs used in \"My Gender States\" are by Emerson Granillo (American, b. 1987); David Newton (American, b. 1993); and Nicholas Williams (American, b. 1994). Candid and relaxed more than posed, they are similar to most people's pictures in old family albums.\r\n\r\nCulled from the Orson Welles-Beatrice Welles materials that are part of the Mavericks & Makers collection within the U-M Library\u2019s Special Collections Research Center, each photo or letter tells a story of a connection Welles held dearly. The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s, when Welles was a teenager, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife, Paola Mori.\u00a0\r\n\r\nIt should be noted that Welles\u2019s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages, including the\u00a0Welles-Feder Collection\u00a0and the\u00a0Wilson-Welles Collection. Whether designing furniture or developing the ideas for sculpture, the process has always been the same. Ideas begin as\r\nscribbled images that are then stretched and refined with CAD software. At its core, much of the work studies the manipulation of simple geometry. Dunn looks at the form from different forced perspectives \u2013 exploding, augmenting, slicing, repeating, and lighting. This body of work is a study of perception, sympathy, hierarchy, and reality. The \u201cWe Are Virus\u201d series is an adaptation from an initial design where it continued to evolve and adapt through manipulation of parts and scale.\r\n\r\nPeter Dunn received his BFA from Wayne State University and MFA from University of Michigan. Yet these communities\u2019 enormous diversity and complexity raises the question of whether it is possible to predict their dynamics. While the environment plays a direct role in selecting for particular species, measuring these direct effects may not be sufficient for making predictions, because the environment also indirectly alters interactions between species. Moreover, measurements of communities in particular conditions may not predict their behavior when the environment fluctuates between conditions. In this talk, I will explain how I have employed tractable laboratory microcosms and mathematical models to formulate unifying rules of microbial communities subject to changing temperature, mortality, and fluctuations. It has only been in the past 5 years that researchers have started to pay attention to the social determinants of mental health in the African context. In this analysis, we draw on three waves of data from an ongoing longitudinal study in two low income communities in Nairobi, Kenya to unpack the complex relationship among the conditions of marriage, kinship support and maternal mental health. Using cross-lagged and moderated mediation models, we find some support for the protective role of unions for maternal mental health but limited evidence for the mediating role of kinship support.\r\n\r\nBio: Sangeetha Madhavan is Professor & Chair of African American Studies and Professor of Sociology at the University of Maryland. As a family demographer working in Africa, she has made substantial contributions to our understanding of extended family systems, parenting, household dynamics, and child and adolescent well-being. Attention to the epic's deployment of words like indigenus and nativus shed light on how this text recuperates indigeneity as it eliminates Indigenous peoples from Mexican history. Virgil\u2019s visual art informs scenes of historical fiction in Guadalupe, which rewrite the past to create a natural transition from the greatness of Tenochtitlan to the splendor of creole Mexico. First, the epic draws on Virgil\u2019s ecphrasis of the Temple of Juno to graft Aztec or Mexica history onto ancient monuments, following a creole tradition of identifying pre-Columbian civilizations as their classical heritage. Second, in an epic catalogue of flowers, the text turns to the pseudo-Virgilian Culex to harmonize creole and Spanish claims to the Virgin of Guadalupe\u2019s divine favor. The interweaving of Latin, Greek, and Nahua names for these flowers positions creoles, and not Spaniards, as the spiritual heirs to the Mexica \u201cempire.\u201d\r\n\r\nErika Valdivieso is an assistant professor of Classics at Yale University, where she is a faculty member of the Program in Early Modern Studies. Previously he was an Associate Professor of Piano at Louisiana State University where he taught for nearly 15 years. \n\nSioles has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards including a Fulbright Scholarship for study in London, and an Atwater Kent Grand Prize. He has performed on three continents at such venues as the Purcell Room (London), Amerika Haus (Berlin), and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Following his London debut in 1983 he made solo appearances in Spain, Germany, Switzerland, and Scotland. He has also performed extensively throughout the United States as a recitalist and soloist with orchestra, and been a featured artist on National Public Radio. An avid chamber musician, he has collaborated with numerous artists, including Edgar Meyer, Barry Tuckwell, the Guarneri String Quartet, and members of the Baltimore and National Symphonies. Part of the Washington D.C. music scene for over a decade, he performed solo and chamber recitals in many of the city's most important halls, among them the Kennedy Center and National Gallery, the Phillips Collection, Strathmore Hall, the French Embassy, and the Corcoran Gallery. Recent international engagements have taken him to Taiwan with bassist Yung-Chiao Wei, where he performed and presented master classes in five major Taiwanese cities including Kaohsiung and Taipei. Sioles has also visited Panama and Costa Rica where he taught and gave both chamber and solo performances. His recordings for Centaur Records include a solo disc and a CD of French Sonatas with violinist Lin He.
