SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Modernist Glass from the Polish Past
DESCRIPTION:The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass)\, the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. We are grateful to them for making this remarkable exhibit possible at CCPS and WCEE.\n\nOrganized by the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies\, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Penny W. DESCRIPTION:On display at Lane Hall\, Rogério M. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States\,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \n\nUsing autoethnography\, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Marília\,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead\,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas\, gender states\, and his life experience—a story of the struggles\, fears\, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm\,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto’s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he\, a queer immigrant\, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials\, images\, and texts from \"Marília\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Collected are portrayals of Pinto’s gender states\, gender confusion\, gender embodiments\, gender doubt\, and reactions to gender stigma. \n\nRogério M. Pinto (Brazilian\, American\, b. 1965\, Belo Horizonte\, Brazil) is a University Diversity Social Transformation Professor\; Berit Ingersoll-Dayton Collegiate Professor of Social Work\; and Professor of Theatre and Drama\, School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, at the University of Michigan. Pinto uses art-based methods to conduct community-engaged research in the United States and Brazil.\n\nThe photographs used in \"My Gender States\" are by Emerson Granillo (American\, b. 1987)\; David Newton (American\, b. 1993)\; and Nicholas Williams (American\, b. 1994). The \"Realm\" assemblages featured in \"My Gender States\" were conceived by Pinto and designed by him\, in collaboration with Sarah Tanner. \n\n\"My Gender States\" is on display in the Lane Hall Exhibit Space (first floor\, 204 S State St) from January 23\, to August 13\, 2024. The exhibit is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.\n\nHosted by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women’s and Gender Studies Department.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Orson Welles as Family Man: Son\, Husband\, Father
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit provides a unique glimpse into the actor/director Orson Welles’ private life. Unlike previous U-M Library exhibits that focused on the artist at work\, this display shows him in informal and familial environments\, revealing a depth and complexity of character that are often overshadowed by his fame and professional achievements. The photographs and documents displayed showcase a variety of emotional tones — warmth\, humor\, tenderness\, and passion. Candid and relaxed more than posed\, they are similar to most people's pictures in old family albums.\n\nCulled from the Orson Welles-Beatrice Welles materials that are part of the Mavericks & Makers collection within the U-M Library’s Special Collections Research Center\, each photo or letter tells a story of a connection Welles held dearly. The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s\, when Welles was a teenager\, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s\, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife\, Paola Mori. \n\nIt should be noted that Welles’s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages\, including the Welles-Feder Collection and the Wilson-Welles Collection. The items on display here were saved by his third and final child\, Beatrice Welles\, and reflect her childhood memories of her parents.\n\nThe exhibit is available during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://umlib.us/hatchergalleryexhibits).

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Peter Dunn Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Peter Dunn has historically been an object maker as a designer and sculptor. Whether designing furniture or developing the ideas for sculpture\, the process has always been the same. Ideas begin as\nscribbled images that are then stretched and refined with CAD software.  At its core\, much of the work studies the manipulation of simple geometry.  Dunn looks at the form from different forced perspectives – exploding\, augmenting\, slicing\, repeating\, and lighting.  This body of work is a study of perception\, sympathy\, hierarchy\, and reality. The “We Are Virus” series is an adaptation from an initial design where it continued to evolve and adapt through manipulation of parts and scale.\n\nPeter Dunn received his BFA from Wayne State University and MFA from University of Michigan.  He currently serves on faculty at College for Creative Studies

DESCRIPTION:Artist Enrico Riley is best known for paintings that investigate violence and hope in cultural traditions in African American culture. His new work—created for his exhibition at the Institute for the Humanities Gallery—is personal and abstract. Started as an attempt to paint for himself\, away from the center of things and off at the edges\, they are from the spaces of private thought that slip into existence and just as easily slip away. They come from an internal conversation and contact with the world. \"When I am with them\,\" Riley explains\, \"I feel a tension between the spaces in the works being present but unnamed. The paintings allow me to observe myself looking. I am acutely aware of time. Maybe they are an invitation to speculate.\"

DESCRIPTION:In Andrea Carlson Future Cache\, a 40-foot-tall memorial wall towers over visitors\, commemorating the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians who were violently burned from their land in Northern Michigan on October 15\, 1900. Written across the walls above and around the memorial\, a statement proclaims Anishinaabe rights to the land we stand on: “You are on Anishinaabe Land.”  \n \nPresented alongside are paintings of imagined decolonized landscapes and a symbolic cache of provisions. Future Cache implicitly asks those who have benefited from the legacies of colonization to consider where they stand and where to go from here and seeks to foster a sense of belonging for displaced Indigenous peoples fighting for restitution.\n\nSpecial thanks to the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians\, Margaret Noodin\, and Richard A. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Angkor Complex: ​Cultural Heritage and Post-Genocide Memory in Cambodia.
DESCRIPTION:Care in Uncertain Times\n \nAs crises of public health\, economic instability\, authoritarian regimes\, racial injustice\, and climate change spread around the globe\, millions are experiencing distress\, conflict\, uncertainty\, and vulnerability. This troubling combination of experiences is nothing new for Cambodians. Between 1975-1979\, when the Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia\, about a quarter of the country’s populations died of infectious diseases\, weapon wounds\, and malnutrition.\n \nThis exhibition brings together more than 80 works of art spanning a millennium to present how the visual culture of Cambodia and its diaspora has evolved in the face of cultural upheaval. DESCRIPTION:How Do We Remember? \n \nMemories are deeply embedded in the physical structures of modern day society — our neighborhoods\, our laws\, our monuments\, our buildings — but those memories are often sculpted and built into those structures by a privileged few. How have their perspectives shaped the enduring stories of our history and visions of the past?\n \nYou’re Welcome is a three-part installation and dynamic intervention that exposes the histories and narratives of the land occupied by the University of Michigan and UMMA’s neoclassical building\, Alumni Memorial Hall. A large-scale commission from artist Cannupa Hanska Luger on the exterior of UMMA’s building asks the campus and community to reconsider the memories molded into the Museum’s stone — the perspectives that shaped those traditions and the stories that remain unseen in our facade. This artistic interrogation dissects colonialist norms of monument-making\, explores the roles of buildings in upholding selected cultural systems\, and develops new forms of memorials that center Indigenous perspectives and collaboration to tell fuller stories and histories. \n \nLuger communicates stories of 21st-century Indigeneity\, sovereignty\, and anti-colonialism while offering critical cultural analysis through deep engagements with materials\, environments\, and communities. DESCRIPTION:In 2017\, Miller computed the character tables of $S_n$ for all $n$ up to $38$ and looked at various statistical properties of the entries. Characters of symmetric groups take only integer values\, and\, based on his computations\, Miller conjectured that almost all entries of the character table of $S_n$ are divisible by any fixed prime power as $n$ tends to infinity. Previously\, Sound and I proved this conjecture for any fixed prime. In this talk\, I will discuss joint work with Sound that fully resolves it\, and mention some related open problems.\n\n**Note regarding location: The Pillsbury room is located on Floor 4M on the Psychology side of East Hall. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Estimating the roughness exponent of stochastic volatility
DESCRIPTION:The roughness exponent of a continuous function $x$ is defined as the number $R\in[0\,1]$ for which the $p^{\text{th}}$ variation of $x$ is infinite if $p<1/R$ and zero if $p>1/R$. The roughness exponent characterizes the regularity of financial time series without any probabilistic assumptions and coincides with the traditional Hurst parameter for the sample paths of fractional Brownian motion. It was observed empirically in the seminal work by Gatheral\, Jaisson\, and Rosenbaum (2018) that the roughness exponent of realized volatility of many financial time series is rather small.\n\n\n However\, one difficulty in the roughness estimation process for the instantaneous volatility $\sigma_t$ is that the instantaneous volatility is observed only indirectly through its antiderivative\, namely the quadratic variation $\langle\log S \rangle_t$ of the price trajectory $S_t$. To this end\, we introduce a new estimator $\widehat{\mathscr{R}}_n$ for the roughness exponent of the instantaneous volatility that integrates the numerical differentiation of $\langle\log S \rangle_t$ with the estimation of the roughness exponent of the derivative $\sigma_t^2=\frac{d}{dt}\langle\log S \rangle_t$. In this talk\, we will demonstrate the consistency of the estimator $\widehat{\mathscr{R}}_n$ for several classes of Gaussian processes\, including fractional Brownian motion and fractional Ornstein--Uhlenbeck processes. Furthermore\, this talk will highlight the underlying rationale of constructing the estimator $\widehat{\mathscr{R}}_n$\, which is based on the robust approximation of the Faber--Schauder coefficients of $\sigma^2_t$.\n \n\n This talk is based on the joint work with Alexander Schied.

DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... In this presentation\, I will feature important findings from winter weather regime-based studies leveraging precipitation observations from a long-term\, ground-based instrument suite in the Northern Great Lakes region. Realistic estimates of rain and snowfall in weather forecasting and climate models are challenging due to uncertainties in cloud and precipitation parameterization schemes. Additionally\, remote-sensing observations require assumptions about hydrometeor microphysical and radiative properties. High temporal resolution\, multi-instrument observations of clouds and precipitation can help better constrain processes in models and refine retrieval assumptions\, leading to more accurate quantification of accumulation. I will highlight the advantage of utilizing long-term observations to examine key physical and dynamical precipitation processes through the lens of regime partitioning. Precipitation regimes are determined using observations of macrophysical and microphysical properties\, large-scale environmental conditions\, and thermodynamic profile characteristics. Key findings demonstrate that regime-dependent characteristics of precipitation lead to distinct differences in frequency\, intensity\, and phase\, microphysical properties\, and overall accumulation. Additionally\, I will demonstrate how winter precipitation regimes in the Northern Great Lakes region are tied to significant seasonal and subseasonal\, synoptic\, and thermodynamic conditions such as atmospheric blocking and anomalous moisture transport (atmospheric rivers).

DESCRIPTION:University Carillonist Tiffany Ng & Kathy Beck perform on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Earplugs are available from the carillonist upon request. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. DESCRIPTION:Come view \"Empowering Generations: Past\, Present\, Future\,\" hosted by Yvette Rock\, in the Michigan Union between February 5-26 next to the Campus Information desk on the first floor.  \n\nYvette Rock is a visual artist based in Detroit\, Michigan. She graduated with a BFA from Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in 1997 and an MFA in painting from University of Michigan in 1999. She is currently pursuing a K-12 Art Education Certificate from College for Creative Studies. She has been a teaching artist in Detroit public schools since 1999 and continues to partner with organizations to bring visual arts to children. In 2012 she founded Live Coal Gallery\, LLC (LCG) – a small business in Detroit. LCG was a recipient of the 2017\, 2019\, and 2021 Knight Arts Challenge. Rock is the Founder and Executive Director of Live Coal\, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization transforming lives and neighborhoods through art\, community development\, and education.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag Seminar | Axion Interactions with Topological Defects
DESCRIPTION:Given that axions are both a promising candidate to solve problems in the Standard Model and are ubiquitous in quantum gravity\, it is crucial to accurately determine their signatures. In this talk\, we discuss how the axion's compact field space leads to interesting interactions with topological defects\, specifically monopoles and strings. In the case of monopoles\, we show that\, due to the Witten effect\, axions interacting with abelian gauge fields generate a potential for the axion from loops of magnetic monopoles\, and discuss a simple phenomenological example where this potential is the dominant contribution to the axion mass. In the case of strings\, we discuss superconductivity from massless chiral excitations along the string. We show that bulk fermions do not need to become massless in the core of the string for there to be trapped massless excitations\, and explore the counterintuitive phase structure of these zero modes\, which become less localized to the string as the mass is increased.

The dread of social isolation is ever with us. It can influence imagination and logic\, producing strategies that result in increased loneliness and spiraling patterns of social decay. In organizations\, people at every level live in fear. Apprehensive authority figures use rational persuasion to call distrusting employees to optimal performance. The result is increased anxiety\, inauthenticity\, silos of self-interest\, and spiraling patterns of corporate decay. In 2019 Anjan Thakor and I published a book called The Economics of Higher Purpose. Since that time\, we have participated in many conversations with people trying to create organizations of optimal performance. In this presentation\, I will draw from science\, and from the most sacred moments in these conversations regarding higher purpose. I will share a set of micro-messages designed to infuse you with increased positivity\, increased consciousness\, and increased courage. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Cosmo-Astro Seminar | First detection of the patchy screening of the CMB photons
DESCRIPTION:Electrons within galaxy groups and clusters Thomson scatter CMB photons out of and into the line of sight\, an effect known as patchy screening. In this talk\, I will propose a new \"temperature inversion\" (TI) estimator to detect this effect. I will show that the estimator is unbiased to foregrounds (CIB\, tSZ\, kSZ). This is a big advantage over the traditional “quadratic estimator” for the patchy screening which is biased by foregrounds and CMB lensing. I will then present the first detection of the patchy screening effect through cross-correlation of the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and Planck satellite CMB data\, and unWISE galaxies. This measurement\, exceeding 7-sigma in significance\, directly probes the distribution of electrons around these galaxies. I will discuss the prospects of this technique to constrain galaxy evolution models. Finally\, I will present a vision for some of the exciting science opportunities to come in the coming decade.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium |  Illuminating Dark Sectors with Low-Energy Leptons
DESCRIPTION:Though the range of viable dark matter (DM) masses spans 90 orders of magnitude\, the natural scenario where its abundance is set by thermal contact with ordinary matter in the early universe significantly restricts this window to ~MeV to multi-TeV masses. This thermal origin implies an interaction between DM and Standard Model (SM) particles\, and thus the rich possibility that it may be produced via accelerated beams. \n\nDespite a broad program of LHC searches for DM candidates above the GeV scale\, important blind spots remain for beyond-the-SM particles with compressed mass spectra: a generic feature of many of the simplest DM models.  I will discuss how the CMS Experiment is enabling new searches in this space through the reconstruction of ultra-low-energy leptons\, and how new paradigms for real-time data analysis will open even greater possibilities for Dark Sector searches at the HL-LHC. Lastly I will introduce the capabilities and plans of the Light Dark Matter eXperiment (LDMX)\, a electron beam fixed-target setup at SLAC\, that will test key benchmarks of sub-GeV DM by leveraging LHC technologies.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | Electron-beam Generated Plasmas and Their Applications - from Materials Processing to Space Propulsion
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThere is growing interest in electron beam (e-beam) generated low temperature plasmas (LTPs) for materials processing at atomic scales for microelectronics and quantum systems.  For these applications\, the plasma is typically generated by injecting an energetic e-beam into a low pressure gas along an applied magnetic field.  The B-field helps confine the e-beam propagating through the reactor. An applied electric field across the B-field enables control of the ion flux to the substrate (wafer) at the periphery of the plasma. The ability of e-beam plasma sources with crossed electric and magnetic (ExB) fields to selectively produce ions and reactive species with a uniform flux of low energy particles to the wafer makes them at-tractive for low damage processing of materials. Since e-beams efficiently ionize molecular gases at sub-mTorr pressures\, they were recently proposed for airbreathing plasma thrusters at very Low Earth Orbits (70-200 km).  In this talk\, I will review concepts for e-beam generated LTP systems and their applications. I will outline key plasma processes\, including plasma generation\, cross-field diffusion and beam-plasma interactions. I will discuss challenges in control of characteristic instabilities\, fluxes and energy distribution functions of electrons and ions in e-beam generated ExB plasmas. \n\nAbout the Speaker:\nYevgeny Raitses is a Principal Research Physicist at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) with expertise in experimental plasma physics.  His more than 200 publications are on physics of crossed-field plasma devices\, plasma-surface interactions\, low temperature plasma and its applications to synthesis and processing of nanomaterials\, and plasma diagnostics.  Raitses received his PhD in Aerospace Engineering from Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in 1997.  He joined PPPL in 1998. His current research interests include e-beam generated magnetized plasmas\, advanced plasma propulsion\, and plasma diagnostics for semiconductor manufacturing.  Dr. Raitses leads several projects and initiatives at PPPL including the DOE-Princeton Collaborative Low Temperature Plasma Research Facility (PCRF\, http://pcrf.pppl.gov)\, advanced plasma propulsion physics (http://htx.pppl.gov)\, plasma-based nanosynthesis and nanofabrication of materials (http://nano.pppl.gov). DESCRIPTION:In topology\, Atiyah duality provides a geometric model for the dual of the suspension spectrum of a smooth manifold. In this talk\, we export this into algebraic geometry by proving an analogous claim in the non-A^1-invariant stable motivic homotopy theory of Annala-Hoyois-Iwasa. Besides recovering many Poincaré duality type results\, it has quite interesting consequences for the behavior of the A^1-colocalization functor R. Namely\, R is a way of turning a cohomology theory into an A^1-invariant one without changing the on smooth projective varieties. Using this observation\, we can prove the independence of logarithmic cohomology groups from the choice of good compactification\, and that certain cohomology groups are birational invariants.

Here we aim to determine how waking experience is sensed to trigger sleep and how sleep restores the brain?  How does the circadian clock interact with the sleep homeostat?  How does impaired sleep lead to human diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease.  Our work makes widespread use of -omics approaches including for the identification of diagnostic biomarkers in human sleep disruption.\n\nShort Bio:\nRavi Allada is the Edward C. Stuntz Distinguished Professor of Neuroscience and Chair of the Department of Neurobiology at Northwestern University.  Dr. Allada received his M.D from the University of Michigan and completed a residency in Clinical Pathology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital.  During his training\, he was an HHMI-NIH Research Scholar and an HHMI Physician Postdoctoral Fellow\, the latter with 2017 Nobel Laureate Michael Rosbash.  The Allada laboratory has discovered molecule “gears” of the core circadian clock including a link to neurodegenerative disease as well as pathways linking the core clock to daily rhythms of sleep and wake.  His laboratory has also identified molecular processes underlying sleep including those linked to memory processing. DESCRIPTION:Racism\, a system of oppression based on race\, is prevalent and pervasive in today’s society. We see it in the media we consume\, our education\, in laws and policies\, and the everyday treatment of the Black community. Through time the community may even internalize these messages and believe them as fact. But through education\, community\, and storytelling we can still find joy and inspire change. \nThis program is meant to uplift the broader Black community by celebrating the student talent we have on campus\, with special acknowledgement of Black women and the intersectionality of their racial and gendered experiences. We hope that attendees are able to engage with the community and be inspired to progress towards healing and liberation. \nJoin Trotter Multicultural Center and the DEI Office in the School of Music\, Theater\, and Dance for a powerful and uplifting afternoon of student performances celebrating Black art\, culture\, and experiences. Adventure Leadership interns provide participants opportunities to explore leadership\, organizational behavior\, and the environment through adventure education practices and outdoor recreation. Programs are provided to a diverse client base\, using experiential tools which can include ground initiatives\, low challenge course elements\, high ropes course elements\, and a climbing tower. As an intern\, you will learn to design and deliver custom experiential programs for students\, educators\, corporate groups\, nonprofit organizations\, and beyond. Interns can also learn how to create community by leading day\, weekend\, or week-long trips. Past trips have included dog sledding in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula\, backpacking Cumberland Island\, and paddling the HuronRiver. Are you completely new to Lindy Hop and looking to set some solid foundations? In either case\, our February lesson series is for you!In this three week progressive beginner series\, we will introduce you to the foundations of Lindy Hop as they likely evolved in Harlem in the 1920s & 30s. We will teach you a variety of Lindy Hop footwork patterns and shapes\, emphasizing their historical and cultural contexts by spotlighting different influential Lindy Hop dancers and Jazz musicians and providing original footage to accompany the class. We will focus on learning through play and observation\, with the goal of preparing you for our intermediate level progressive lessons and setting you up to delve into Lindy Hop on the social dance floor! COST:\nFREE + free entry into the social dance after PRE-REQS: \nNone! NOTE:\nThis series is replacing our weekly drop-in beginner lessons in February.
