Known as Polskie szk\u0142o artystyczne (Polish art glass), the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \r\n\r\nThe collectors, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Krak\u00f3w. Scouring flea markets, antique shops, and websites, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. We are grateful to them for making this remarkable exhibit possible at CCPS and WCEE.\r\n\r\nOrganized by the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Penny W. Its youth group organizers aimed to bolster Palestinian unity across the systemic barriers \u2014 colonial divides, military checkpoints, walls, etc. \u2014 that fragment the lives of people living in Palestine. \r\n\r\nSouq Stories: Gaza Lives brings us to present-day Gaza, sharing the stories of, and images captured by, young journalists and photographers who have continued to document the realities of life in Palestine. It also honors one among them, Fouad Abu Khammash, who was killed in January 2024 in an Israeli bomb attack on Gaza.\r\n\r\n< The exhibit includes images of people suffering the aftermath of the ongoing violence. >\r\n\r\nThis exhibit was curated by Souq Stories team members Shareef Sarhan and Waed Abbas in partnership with U-M students Amir Marshi, Zainab Hakim, Mariam Odeh, and Vivian M. Nguyen. It\u2019s offered in conjunction with this year\u2019s Palestine Awareness Week, an annual series of educational events related to Palestinian history, culture, and politics. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \r\n\r\nUsing autoethnography, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Mar\u00edlia,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas, gender states, and his life experience\u2014a story of the struggles, fears, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto\u2019s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he, a queer immigrant, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials, images, and texts from \"Mar\u00edlia\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Pinto (Brazilian, American, b. 1965, Belo Horizonte, Brazil) is a University Diversity Social Transformation Professor; Berit Ingersoll-Dayton Collegiate Professor of Social Work; and Professor of Theatre and Drama, School of Music, Theatre & Dance, at the University of Michigan. Pinto uses art-based methods to conduct community-engaged research in the United States and Brazil.\r\n\r\nThe photographs used in \"My Gender States\" are by Emerson Granillo (American, b. 1987); David Newton (American, b. 1993); and Nicholas Williams (American, b. 1994). The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s, when Welles was a teenager, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife, Paola Mori.\u00a0\r\n\r\nIt should be noted that Welles\u2019s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages, including the\u00a0Welles-Feder Collection\u00a0and the\u00a0Wilson-Welles Collection. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don\u2019t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.\u00a0\u00a0\n \nIn this online exhibition, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum\u2019s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices.
