SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Latinx Research Week 2024
DESCRIPTION:Puentes is excited about its upcoming Latinx Research Week (LRW). Latinx Research Week is an interdisciplinary\, conference-style series of events that we host annually on campus to uplift research being conducted by Latinx staff\, faculty\, and students\, as well as research relevant to Latinx populations. This year Latinx Research Week will be held on March 11th - 14th in the Michigan Union. In 2023\, we were thrilled to host 16 research sessions\, allocate space for over 70 presenters\, and welcome over 300 attendees across our events. We hope to see an even greater turn out this year. \n\nhe theme for Latinx Research Week 2024 is Illuminating Familismo. Familismo is a psychological construct as well as a protective Latinx cultural value that emphasizes the importance of family support\, loyalty\, and honor. Through our interdisciplinary program\, we hope attendees will reflect on\, interrogate\, and reimagine how the academy can be transformed to acknowledge\, welcome\, and illuminate both our biological and chosen familial relationships. In past years\, we have seen spouses\, partners\, siblings\, parents\, children\, and members of the larger Latinx community attend Latinx Research Week in support of their presenting family members\, thus reimagining what an academic conference could and should look like. Additionally\, we have seen other families in attendance: families of co-workers\, cohort-mates\, best friends\, and lab families to name a few. We recognize that many members of the Puentes familia may be far from home but have still chosen to plant roots here and create meaningful communities of chosen family members at UM. We hope that our curated program will illuminate the importance of familismo and encourage attendees to imagine how we can transform academic spaces into more inclusive spaces that honor our families\, chosen or otherwise\, and the ways they have supported our academic journeys. Latinx Research Week 2024: Illuminating Familiso highlights the many ways our families motivate\, inspire\, encourage\, humanize\, and uplift us as we conduct groundbreaking work in our respective fields.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Modernist Glass from the Polish Past
DESCRIPTION:The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass)\, the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. We are grateful to them for making this remarkable exhibit possible at CCPS and WCEE.\n\nOrganized by the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies\, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design and Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia.\n\nLearn more about the exhibition and the artists at https://myumi.ch/8eVrM\n\nThe exhibit opens on September 15\, 2023 in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact copernicus@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:CES Exhibition. Camera as Passport: The Ship of Photographers
DESCRIPTION:Starting in 1933 when Hitler and the Nazis came to power\, a cadre of European Jews—German\, Polish\, Hungarian\, Austrian\, French—discovered that a camera could be their passport\, first out of Germany and then out of Europe. Some of these women and men had been planning one type of career—lawyer\, journalist\, painter\, musician—but then realized that they needed to find another way to earn a living. Taking photographs presented a sufficiently malleable opportunity that not only allowed them to leave Germany and then Europe but also to have a means to sustain themselves in foreign countries where they did not necessarily speak the language.\n \n They did\, however\, mobilize the visual language of photography. For a number of these figures\, forced migration became an asset during the golden age of photojournalism wherein their portable services were employed to supply picture stories on the move and around the world. Many of these Jews became influential photographers\, shaping how their contemporaries saw the world. Looking back on their work\, we can see how they have influenced our understanding of the modern world even as we can recognize their photographs as a significant component of modern Jewish visual culture.\n \n Of the dozens of photographers who fled Europe\, eight escaped on a single ship. The S. S. Winnipeg sailed from Marseille\, France on May 7\, 1941. Germany had already conquered both eastern and western Europe and was poised to invade the Soviet Union. The United States was not yet in the war. Among the 750 refugees aboard were photographers from Hungary\, Belgium\, France\, and Germany: Ilse Bing\, Josef Breitenbach\, Boris Lipnitsky\, Charles Leirens\, Yolla Niclas\, Fred Stein\, Monie Tannen\, and Ylla (Camilla Henriette Koffler). During lifeboat drills\, they discovered each other. Some of them narrowly escaped Vichy France under the auspices of the American journalist Varian Fry and the New York-based Emergency Rescue Committee that helped so many Jewish and anti-Fascist artists get out of Europe in the nick of time.\n \n This exhibit introduces the University of Michigan to this intrepid group as exemplary case studies of the wide range of European photographers who used their cameras as passports to other worlds. It focuses first on their European experiences pre-emigration before turning to their escape from Europe on the S. S. Winnipeg (with three of them taking photos on board the ship). The exhibit concludes with examples of some of their initial photographic reactions to the new world\, seeing it through European eyes.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Propositions to Progress: A Working Atlas of the Global South
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, maps have served as a panoptic technology\, assisting imperial powers in governance\, discipline\, and control. In this exhibit\, internationally renowned Filipino artist Cian Dayrit acts as a counter-cartographer\, reclaiming mapmaking as an emancipatory activity.\n\nDayrit’s artworks\, embroidered on textiles or painted over collages of colonial-era maps\, plot the extraction of natural resources\, land grabbing\, and dispossession and displacement in his native Philippines. At the same time\, their resistant lines summon new imaginaries out of the overlaps between places and memories.\n\nDayrit’s practice is critically and practically informed by the narratives of Filipino communities. Items exhibited alongside his artwork are the result of map-drawing workshops the artist has convened with rural\, urban\, and indigenous communities across the Philippines. Propositions to Progress invites you to engage in the collaborative endeavor to activate alternative territories from the ground up.\n\nCian Dayrit is an interdisciplinary artist exploring colonialism and ethnography\, archaeology\, history\, and mythology. Dayrit subverts the language of the state\, museum\, and military to visualize the contradictions on which these institutions are built. He studied at the University of the Philippines.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Souq Stories: Gaza Lives
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit is an extension of Souq Stories (https://souqstories.insaniyyat.org/)\, which was displayed in 2021 in all seven of the historic markets it depicts in Gaza\, Nazareth\, Acre\, Nablus\, Jerusalem\, Khalil\, and Jaffa. Its youth group organizers aimed to bolster Palestinian unity across the systemic barriers — colonial divides\, military checkpoints\, walls\, etc. — that fragment the lives of people living in Palestine. \n\nSouq Stories: Gaza Lives brings us to present-day Gaza\, sharing the stories of\, and images captured by\, young journalists and photographers who have continued to document the realities of life in Palestine. It also honors one among them\, Fouad Abu Khammash\, who was killed in January 2024 in an Israeli bomb attack on Gaza.\n\n< The exhibit includes images of people suffering the aftermath of the ongoing violence. >\n\nThis exhibit was curated by Souq Stories team members Shareef Sarhan and Waed Abbas in partnership with U-M students Amir Marshi\, Zainab Hakim\, Mariam Odeh\, and Vivian M. Nguyen. It’s offered in conjunction with this year’s Palestine Awareness Week\, an annual series of educational events related to Palestinian history\, culture\, and politics. Presented in association with Insaniyyat: Society of Palestinian Anthropologists.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exile and the Mentor-student Relationship: A Force for Resistance and Decolonization
DESCRIPTION:This small exhibit features work in reproduction by Iraqi artists Hanaa Malallah and Mohammed Karim\, as well as an original painting by Karim. Both Malallah and Karim were significantly influenced by their mentors during and after their training in Iraq\, and continue to share their work and ideas with a new generation today.\n\nIn the United States\, Iraq is typically spoken about in a passive position: colonized\, under despotic rule\, occupied. Post-occupied. Through connections between mentors and students\, and students who became mentors to new students\, Iraqi artists have been a force for anti-colonialism\, claiming their heritage and its future for themselves.\n\nView the exhibit Monday-Friday in the Fine Arts Library\, Tappan Hall\, 855 S. University Ave.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Garden Repairs
DESCRIPTION:About the installation:\nGarden Repairs is an installation of paper textiles that loosely narrate the life cycle of plants. It considers the process of germination as a site for the cross-pollination of ideas from diverse disciplines around the future of the built environment. \n\nAbout the artist:\nSusan Goethel Campbell creates multi-disciplinary work that considers the contemporary landscape to be an emergent system where nature\, culture\, and the engineered environment are indistinguishable from one another. Central to her practice is the collection\, documentation\, and observation of seasonal change and ephemera in both natural and artificial environments. Her work is realized in several formats\, including installation\, video\, prints\, and drawings\, as well as projects that engage communities to look at local and global environments.\n\nCampbell earned an MFA in printmaking from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her work has been exhibited internationally in Belgium\, Germany\, Switzerland\, and Slovenia and nationally throughout the US\, including the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, Queens Art Museum\, Crystal Bridges Museum\, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit\, Grand Rapids Art Museum\, the Detroit Institute of Arts\, The Drawing Center\, and The International Print Center New York. In 2009 she was one of 18 artists selected for the inaugural Kresge Artist Fellowship.\n\nCampbell has been awarded residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts\, the Flemish Center for Graphic Arts\, the Jentel Foundation\, Beisinghoff Print Residency\, and the Print Research Institute of North Texas. She taught studio art for 15 years at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit and has been a visiting artist in numerous institutions in the United States and abroad. Her work is in the collection of the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, New York Public Library\, Detroit Institute of Arts\, Toledo Museum of Art\, and the University of Michigan Special Collections Library.\n\nThis project is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities' multi-year High Stakes Art initiative.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:My Gender States
DESCRIPTION:On display at Lane Hall\, Rogério M. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States\,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \n\nUsing autoethnography\, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Marília\,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead\,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas\, gender states\, and his life experience—a story of the struggles\, fears\, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm\,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto’s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he\, a queer immigrant\, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials\, images\, and texts from \"Marília\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Collected are portrayals of Pinto’s gender states\, gender confusion\, gender embodiments\, gender doubt\, and reactions to gender stigma. \n\nRogério M. Pinto (Brazilian\, American\, b. 1965\, Belo Horizonte\, Brazil) is a University Diversity Social Transformation Professor\; Berit Ingersoll-Dayton Collegiate Professor of Social Work\; and Professor of Theatre and Drama\, School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, at the University of Michigan. Pinto uses art-based methods to conduct community-engaged research in the United States and Brazil.\n\nThe photographs used in \"My Gender States\" are by Emerson Granillo (American\, b. 1987)\; David Newton (American\, b. 1993)\; and Nicholas Williams (American\, b. 1994). The \"Realm\" assemblages featured in \"My Gender States\" were conceived by Pinto and designed by him\, in collaboration with Sarah Tanner. \n\n\"My Gender States\" is on display in the Lane Hall Exhibit Space (first floor\, 204 S State St) from January 23\, to August 13\, 2024. The exhibit is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.\n\nHosted by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women’s and Gender Studies Department.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Orson Welles as Family Man: Son\, Husband\, Father
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit provides a unique glimpse into the actor/director Orson Welles’ private life. Unlike previous U-M Library exhibits that focused on the artist at work\, this display shows him in informal and familial environments\, revealing a depth and complexity of character that are often overshadowed by his fame and professional achievements. The photographs and documents displayed showcase a variety of emotional tones — warmth\, humor\, tenderness\, and passion. Candid and relaxed more than posed\, they are similar to most people's pictures in old family albums.\n\nCulled from the Orson Welles-Beatrice Welles materials that are part of the Mavericks & Makers collection within the U-M Library’s Special Collections Research Center\, each photo or letter tells a story of a connection Welles held dearly. The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s\, when Welles was a teenager\, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s\, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife\, Paola Mori. \n\nIt should be noted that Welles’s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages\, including the Welles-Feder Collection and the Wilson-Welles Collection. The items on display here were saved by his third and final child\, Beatrice Welles\, and reflect her childhood memories of her parents.\n\nThe exhibit is available during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://umlib.us/hatchergalleryexhibits).

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Peter Dunn Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Peter Dunn has historically been an object maker as a designer and sculptor. Whether designing furniture or developing the ideas for sculpture\, the process has always been the same. Ideas begin as\nscribbled images that are then stretched and refined with CAD software. At its core\, much of the work studies the manipulation of simple geometry. Dunn looks at the form from different forced perspectives – exploding\, augmenting\, slicing\, repeating\, and lighting. This body of work is a study of perception\, sympathy\, hierarchy\, and reality. The “We Are Virus” series is an adaptation from an initial design where it continued to evolve and adapt through manipulation of parts and scale.\n\nPeter Dunn received his BFA from Wayne State University and MFA from University of Michigan. He currently serves on faculty at College for Creative Studies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andrea Carlson Future Cache
DESCRIPTION:In Andrea Carlson Future Cache\, a 40-foot-tall memorial wall towers over visitors\, commemorating the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians who were violently burned from their land in Northern Michigan on October 15\, 1900. Written across the walls above and around the memorial\, a statement proclaims Anishinaabe rights to the land we stand on: “You are on Anishinaabe Land.”  \n \nPresented alongside are paintings of imagined decolonized landscapes and a symbolic cache of provisions. Future Cache implicitly asks those who have benefited from the legacies of colonization to consider where they stand and where to go from here and seeks to foster a sense of belonging for displaced Indigenous peoples fighting for restitution.\n\nSpecial thanks to the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians\, Margaret Noodin\, and Richard A. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Angkor Complex: Cultural Heritage and Post-Genocide Memory in Cambodia.
DESCRIPTION:Care in Uncertain Times\n \nAs crises of public health\, economic instability\, authoritarian regimes\, racial injustice\, and climate change spread around the globe\, millions are experiencing distress\, conflict\, uncertainty\, and vulnerability. This troubling combination of experiences is nothing new for Cambodians. Between 1975-1979\, when the Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia\, about a quarter of the country’s populations died of infectious diseases\, weapon wounds\, and malnutrition.\n \nThis exhibition brings together more than 80 works of art spanning a millennium to present how the visual culture of Cambodia and its diaspora has evolved in the face of cultural upheaval. Showcasing works from worldwide collections\, including those from some of the foremost members of the Cambodian contemporary art scene\, Angkor Complex allows viewers to encounter the still-fresh scars of a genocide and critically appreciate the strategies evolved to nurture resilience in trying times.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the U-M Office of the Provost\, U-M Office of the President\, National Endowment for the Arts\, Michigan Arts and Culture Council\, Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund\, and U-M Ross School of Business.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Curriculum / Collection
DESCRIPTION:In Curriculum / Collection\, an incredible variety of University of Michigan courses take material form. Collected for each course are objects that address the nature of materiality\, time\, and human interaction in relation to our environments\, our wars\, our relationships\, and our eccentricities. \n \nWorking in collaboration with University faculty\, the works in this exhibition were selected for their capacity to provoke engagement with the guiding questions and themes of their specific courses\, while also offering students inspiration for research and art projects in their areas of study. The exhibition demonstrates some of the diverse and creative ways art plays a central role in learning across the disciplines. It also asks us to consider what we can learn from art objects across an infinite variety of specialties and subject matter.\n \nAs classes begin in Fall of 2021\, you’ll be able to use these pages to explore the collections designed for each course\, dive into the works themselves\, and hear from the professors and students about how they are engaging with art and objects in new ways. Who knows\, maybe you’ll learn something surprising along the way\, too.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Erica Gervais Pappendick and Ted Pappendick\, and the Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund\, and the Oakriver Foundation.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Products from Pollution: Carbon Capture and Conversion
DESCRIPTION:Phasing out fossil fuels is a primary means to fight climate change\, but it alone is not enough. Even if all emissions ceased tomorrow\, atmospheric CO2 levels are already dangerously high and the climate would keep warming before it eventually stabilizes. We have to reduce or “capture” legacy CO2 to avert disaster. As the International Panel on Climate Change stated\, the *only* way we can meet our climate goal is to use carbon capture in our climate change fighting tool kit. \n\nMany of the products that we use every day are made with carbon. Treating legacy CO2 as a resource with economic value rather than a pollutant allows us to generate revenue while also fighting climate change. \n\nHowever\, not all uses or types of captured CO2 are equal in terms of environmental or economic benefits. This exhibit includes a video game that helps explain the pros and cons associated with different methods and applications of carbon capture. \n\nAdditionally\, it also provides examples of two types of carbon removal\, an interactive block activity\, and sample products made from captured CO2.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LSI Seminar Series: Meng Wang\, Ph.D.\, HHMI Janelia Research Campus
DESCRIPTION:Metabolism is fundamental to life. During metabolic reactions\, thousands of metabolites are generated\, which are directly connected with cellular activities and highly conserved across species. In addition to their best-known functions as structural building blocks and energy resources\, research in Meng Wang's group focuses on their signaling roles in orchestrating organelle homeostasis\, coordinating microbe-host communication and extending lifespan and healthspan. Through harnessing the power of functional genetics and multi-omics\, their work uncovers several previously unknown metabolite-directed mechanisms in regulating somatic and reproductive longevity. These studies reveal the importance of metabolic signals in linking cellular dynamics and organism health during aging. \n\nMeng Wang\, Ph.D.\, received a B.S. from Peking University\, China in 2001 and a Ph.D. from the University of Rochester in 2005. After being a completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School\, Wang joined the faculty of Baylor College of Medicine in 2010. Before moving to Janelia in 2022\, she was an HHMI Investigator\, a professor and the Robert C. Fyfe Endowed Chair on Aging at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM)\, as well as a co-director of the BCM Genetics and Genomics Graduate Program. \n\nWang’s research focuses on the molecular mechanisms governing somatic aging\, reproductive senescence and lipid metabolism\, and their sophisticated interrelationship\, through harnessing the power of functional genomics\, metabolomics\, chemical engineering and optical biophysics. Her group uncovered the first lysosome-to-nucleus retrograde lipid messenger pathway\, provided new regulatory mechanisms of reproductive longevity\, and demonstrated a novel mode of signaling communication between bacteria and mitochondria in regulating host’s lipid metabolism and longevity. Technological developments based on stimulated Raman scattering microscopy in Wang’s laboratory have provided new ways to visualize and track lipid molecules as a function of time and space in living cells and organisms. \n\nShe is the recipient of NIH Director’s Pioneer Award\, Peter O’Donnell Award\, and Gibco Emerging Leader Prize\, HHMI Faculty Scholar Award\, ASCB Gibco Emerging Leader Prize\, ASCB Early Career Life Scientist Award and SCBA Kenneth Fong Young Investigator Award. She is an elected fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Anti-Racism in the Abroad Context - RESCHEDULED TO 3/14
DESCRIPTION:Structural racism in the United States is the normalization and legitimization of an array of dynamics—historical\, cultural\, institutional\, and interpersonal—that routinely advantages white people while producing cumulative and chronic adverse outcomes for people of color. It is a system of hierarchy and inequity primarily characterized by white supremacy—the preferential treatment\, privilege\, and power for white people at the expense of other racially oppressed people. It is also important to recognize that racism is a global issue and continues to be perpetuated in societies across the globe and it manifests in many different ways at various levels. This anti-racism workshop in an abroad context aims to offer an entryway for students to engage in observing how racism plays out in different societies outside the United States\, utilizing examples\, particularly media representation\, that may reflect deeper messages\, and what it means to be anti-racist for American students who have been abroad\, or may be visiting\, studying\, or traveling abroad.\n\n\nThis workshop will engage participants in the following activities:\nBetter understanding of the phrase “anti-racism”\nLearning about race and its nuances\nRecognizing how culture can shape the development of racism and power structures\nSeeing how media around the world uphold oppression in different ways\nCreating action steps toward actively recognizing oppression abroad\nThis workshop is designed for U-M master's students\, doctoral students\, and postdoctoral scholars on all three campuses\; therefore\, only U-M graduate students and postdoctoral scholars are permitted to register for this workshop. While this workshop is being facilitated on behalf of Rackham’s Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion Professional Development Certificate Program\, it is open to all U-M graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. For faculty and staff\, please contact rackhampdeworkshops@umich.edu to ask if we can accommodate your attendance.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Inside the Mutli-Machine Maneuver Transaction: Implications of Trust\, Fault\, and Machine Reputation
DESCRIPTION:Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are often portrayed charting an inevitable pathway towards transformative roadway system efficiency and safety. However\, current AVs are designed to operate within (and limited by) a legacy system of laws\, liabilities\, licensing\, taxation\, control systems and normative behaviors built on the assumption that vehicles will have human drivers. In other words\, even if an AV may be able to go faster\, corner more tightly or safely maneuver around obstacles with a margin of error much smaller than human drivers\, they must remain restricted\, for now\, to maneuvers expected from a human-driven vehicle for two key reasons. First\, deviation from legacy norms would disrupt nearby human drivers\; second\, current AVs are simply not ready to self-organize outside our legacy system. By default\, then\, in the near-term we must rely on the speed limits\, lane lines\, stop signals and other rules of the road we have developed in a broadly ad hoc fashion in 100+ years of human-driven automobility. But once we have millions of AVs in motion at the same time and AVs are the norm not the exception\, are the legacy forms of general self-organization that compensate for the limitations of human drivers still practical\, or even desirable?\n\nDr. Karl Wunderlich\, Director of the Surface Transportation Systems Division at Noblis\, will join the first CCAT Distinguished Lecture of 2024 to discuss Noblis’ proposed broader ecosystem that includes transaction and trust management which is built on a decentralized distributed ledger solution. A reputational trust report for all vehicles is managed externally by a consortium of entities facilitating the ecosystem’s transactions. Value distribution in such a system may consider all parties facilitating aspects of the transaction\, including yielding priority\, providing\, and maintaining the maneuver space\, providing maneuver and sensor verification reports\, providing reliable position and timing data\, managing trust reports and recording transactions. Noblis is currently conducting research to examine the viability of such a system and its potential to address long-standing issues in equitable roadway system financial sustainability.\n---\nAbout the speaker: Dr. Wunderlich is the Director of the Surface Transportation Division at Noblis\, a not-for-profit system engineering and strategic planning firm. He also serves the Director of the Noblis Autonomous Systems Research Center in Reston\, VA. Dr. Wunderlich is an expert in the use of simulation techniques to evaluate the potential impact of emerging technologies to improve shared infrastructure system efficiency and productivity –including vehicle connectivity and cooperative autonomy. He is a published author and patent-holder in orchestrated autonomy\, which leverages distributed ledger technologies to create efficient\, collision-free path plans involving heterogenous\, unfamiliar\, and autonomous machines. Dr. Wunderlich has led over three dozen federal R&D research projects and is an author or co-author of more than 50 publications and federal guidance documents\, including the 2019 Update to the FHWA Traffic Analysis Tools Volume III: Guide on Micro-Simulation. Dr. Wunderlich holds a Ph.D. in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan (1994).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Understanding Barriers to Mental Health Related Help-Seeking in Undergraduate Engineers
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The prevalence of mental health disorders on college campuses is of increasing concern. Within engineering\, there has been an increase in the amount of research conducted on characterizing student mental health and understanding the influence of engineering culture on mental wellness. Research has shown that engineering students in mental health distress are less likely to have received professional help compared to their peers. This identifies a treatment gap for engineering students\, meaning that only a portion of those in mental health distress are seeking professional treatment. Addressing the treatment gap can improve the prognosis of mental health problems and reduce progression to more chronic or severe disorders. Through this talk\, I will present results of both qualitative and quantitative research studies aimed at better understanding the beliefs that engineering students have about seeking help for a mental health concern. In particular\, I will discuss barriers and facilitators to help-seeking including challenges in navigating the mental healthcare system\, the perception that help-seeking is a sacrifice of time and academics\, and the importance of mental health culture in engineering. Further\, I will talk about the influence of engineering student\, faculty and staff messaging on students’ beliefs about help seeking. Results of this work will provide guidance for intervention development to improve mental health related help-seeking in undergraduate engineering students.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Wagner Thursday Seminar Series - Putting Systematics at the Centre: the Mega-genus Solanum (Solanaceae) as a Model System
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our ongoing Thursday Seminar Series.\n\nPREVIEW: Systematics or taxonomy is often seen as an end in itself\, but like all science it is a key facilitator of downstream studies and innovations. The results of taxonomy (including systematics and phylogeny) are the foundational cornerstones for our understanding of how the world works\, and for how we can best conserve and protect a dynamic set of ecosystems for the future. My taxonomic work has focused on Solanum\, one of the largest genera of flowering plants\, and has involved making sometimes difficult linkages to diverse communities of scientists across plant biology. The size of Solanum\, with some 1\,250 currently recognised species means that assembling monophyletic groups of species and tackling these monographically has been thought to be too challenging\; big genera have been something for taxonomists to avoid. But the landscape is changing\, working with these large groups has significant advantages. Solanum also contains many species of agricultural importance\, often complicating primary taxonomy with a superfluity of names from the past. Of course\, this work has not been done alone\, but with a dynamic and exciting group all of whom have brought their skills and perspectives to the task in hand. In this talk I will take you through the journey we have made\, from a set of small taxonomically focused monographs and floras to studies involving genomes and advances in plant breeding. The path the Solanum group has taken is always centred in systematics – understanding species and their relationships. Large\, species-rich genera like Solanum are traditionally seen as problems\, but with a multidisciplinary approach that is broad-minded and open to new ideas and paths\, can reveal much about plant evolution. It can also bring systematics and taxonomy to the table as critical components of solutions to today’s societal and environmental problems.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IOE Departmental Seminar Series: Kaizheng Wang
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In this talk\, Kaizheng Wang will present a versatile framework for statistical learning in non-stationary environments. In each time period\, their approach applies a stability principle to select a look-back window that maximizes the utilization of historical data while keeping the cumulative bias within an acceptable range relative to the stochastic error. Their theory showcases the adaptability of this approach to unknown non-stationarity. The regret bound is minimax optimal up to logarithmic factors when the population losses are strongly convex\, or Lipschitz only. At the heart of our analysis lie two novel components: a measure of similarity between functions and a segmentation technique for dividing the non-stationary data sequence into quasi-stationary pieces. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe global incidence of dementia is increasing\, with over 9.9 million new cases each year\, translating to a new diagnosis every 3.2 seconds. This upward trend is expected to intensify due to the growing aging population worldwide. Research into modeling dementia encounters unique challenges\, including sparse data and complex non-linear interactions between variables and outcomes. In this talk\, I will share my recent work on employing artificial intelligence to unravel the mechanisms behind aging and dementia. This work leverages combined insights from data analysis and domain knowledge. Specifically\, for imaging-based analysis\, we have developed a novel \"subspace network\" approach. This technique employs efficient deep learning models for non-linear multi-task learning\, even with limited data. The subspace network incrementally refines predictions by sketching a low-dimensional subspace that facilitates knowledge transfer across tasks. Our empirical findings show that this method efficiently identifies the correct parameter subspaces and surpasses existing models in predicting clinical scores of dementia from brain imaging data. Additionally\, we explore the use of language markers in diagnosing dementia early. We introduce a novel reinforcement learning framework for training a dialogue agent that efficiently interacts with elderly individuals to detect signs of dementia. This agent optimizes conversations by generating a disease-specific lexical probability distribution\, aiming to increase diagnostic precision while minimizing the number of conversational turns needed. We have also developed a cross-modality learning framework that synergizes language markers with brain imaging data. By using a contrastive loss technique\, this framework aligns linguistic and imaging data\, enhancing the predictive accuracy of language-based markers with the help of auxiliary imaging variables derived from language.\n\nBio:\nJiayu Zhou is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Michigan State University. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Department of Astronomy 2023-2024 Colloquium Series Presents:
DESCRIPTION:\"Gravity or turbulence? Understanding the star formation law from molecular clouds to galaxies.\"\n\nIn this talk\, I will show that the variety of Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relations reported in the literature\, from molecular clouds in the Milky Way (MW) to resolved and unresolved galaxies\, is naturally explained by the very collapse of the molecular clouds. I will also show that the low values and the constancy of the (wrongly named) “efficiency per free-fall time” arise naturally when the clouds collapse. Putting all together\, our results imply that star formation is fast and efficient and that molecular cloud turbulence\, the pressure in the midplane of the galaxies\, their rotation\, or other physical agents are not the primary drivers of the star formation law but only slight modification over the main law\, namely\, that the star formation rate is proportional to the mass in collapsing gas. However\, stellar feedback is crucial to halt star formation\, keeping the gas depletion time low on galactic levels. I will show\, finally\, that the properties of collapsing clouds and the kinematical properties of their newborn stellar clusters\, as inferred from Gaia DR3 data\, are consistent with these KS relations.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Commutative Algebra Seminar: Singularities of GL-varieties
DESCRIPTION:A GL-variety is a reduced affine scheme whose coordinate ring is a polynomial representation that is finitely generated up to the action of the infinite general linear group GL.\n\nEquivalently\, GL-varieties are inverse limits of Vec-varieties\, functors from the category of finite dimensional vector spaces to reduced affine varieties.\n\nIn a joint work with Jan Draisma and Christopher Chiu\, taking the perspective of Vec-varieties\, we show that the (inverse) limit of the singular loci of a Vec-variety evaluated in dimension n defines a closed Vec-subvariety of “singular points”.\n\nIn a forthcoming paper with Andrew Snowden\, we show that the GL-variety obtained from these \"singular points\" is actually the locus of singular points of the initial GL-variety\, namely\, the following loci coincide:\n\n1. The closed GL-variety arising from taking the limit of the singular points in the corresponding Vec-variety.\n2. The locus of points where the module of Kähler differential is not flat.\n3. The locus of points where the tangent space and tangent cone are not isomorphic.\n4. The locus of points that are not formally smooth.\n5. The locus of points where there is not an n_0 such that for all n> n_0 an n-jet lift to an n+1-jet.\n\nIn this talk\, I will present the necessary background and more details about the aforementioned results.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Differential Equations Seminar: Phase transition issue of focusing Gibbs measures for Schrödinger-wave systems
DESCRIPTION:We study the phase transition phenomenon of the singular Gibbs measure associated with the Schrödinger-wave systems\, initiated by Lebowitz\, Rose\, and Speer (1988). In the three-dimensional case\, this problem turns out to be critical\, exhibiting a phase transition according to the size of the coupling constant. In the weakly coupling region\, the Gibbs measure can be constructed as a probability measure\, which is singular with respect to the Gaussian free field. On the other hand\, in the strong coupling case\, the Gibbs measure can not be normalized as a probability measure. In particular\, the finite-dimensional truncated Gibbs measures have no weak limit\, even up to a subsequence.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC/CM Seminar | Novel superconductors and helimagnets by topotactic redox reactions
DESCRIPTION:Topotactic transformation of epitaxial thin films by soft chemistry allows the realisation of high crystalline quality metastable phases. In this talk I will discuss two physics topics that can be addressed through harnessing topotactic transformations in transition metal oxides. First\, infinite-layer nickelate superconductors (RNiO_2 ) are synthesised by topotactically reducing their perovskite (RNiO_3 ) counterparts. This enables the unfavourable Ni+ ion and unlocks a novel family of unconventional superconductors [1]. In particular I will focus on results from low-energy muon spin rotation [2] that reveal local magnetism in these materials that 1) onsets at rather high temperature\, 2) is independent of the rare earth 4f electrons\, 3) appears to be robust to doping 4) is antiferromagnetic and possibly short-range-ordered in nature and 5) coexists with superconductivity at low temperatures. From these conclusions we can make some comparisons with the nominally-similar copper-oxide superconductors.\n\nSecondly\, perovskite alkali earth ferrites (AFe ^{4+} O_3) are fascinating helimagnetic compounds\, proposed to host a high density skyrmion lattice despite the chemical centrosymmetry [3]. Topotactic oxidation of the more stable Fe^{3+} material\, AFeO_{2.5}\, is necessary to synthesise high quality samples. I will touch briefly on our recent work to map out the helimagnetic phases in temperature\, magnetic field and\, now\, biaxial strain. \n\n[1] D. Li et al\, Nature 572 (2019) 624\n[2] J. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Revealing Molecular Pathology at High Chemical and Spatial Resolutions Using Mass Spectrometry
DESCRIPTION:Imaging mass spectrometry is a powerful analytical technique for analyzing the spatial lipidome. This technology enables the visualization of molecular pathology directly in tissues by combining the specificity of mass spectrometry with the spatial fidelity of microscopic imaging. This label-free methodology has proven exceptionally useful in research areas such as cancer diagnosis\, diabetes\, and infectious disease. However\, state-of-the-art experiments stress the limits of current analytical technologies\, necessitating improvements in molecular specificity and sensitivity in order to answer increasingly complicated biological and clinical hypotheses. Especially when studying lipids\, many isobaric (i.e.\, same nominal mass) and isomeric (i.e.\, same exact mass) compounds exist that complicate spectral analysis\, with each structure having a potentially unique cellular function. The Prentice Lab develops instrumentation and novel gas-phase reactions to provide unparalleled levels of chemical resolution. These gas-phase transformations are fast\, efficient\, and specific\, making them ideally suited for implementation into imaging mass spectrometry workflows. For example\, these workflows have enabled the identification of multiple sn-positional phosphatidylcholine isomers\, the separation of isobaric phosphatidylserines and sulfatides\, and the identification of fatty acid double bond isomers using a variety of charge transfer and covalent ion/ion reactions as well as ion/electron and ion/photon reactions. Working with biologists and clinicians\, we then leverage these novel imaging technologies to understand the molecular events associated with important problems in human health\, including infectious disease\, diabetes\, and neurodegenerative diseases.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:34 David W. Belin Lecture - Toward a Jewish American Art History
DESCRIPTION:5:30 PM Reception | 6:00 PM Lecture | 7:30 PM Book Signing\n\nThe Frankel Center's 34 Annual Davin W. Belin Lecture with Dr. Samantha Baskind (Cleveland State University) traces the opportunities and challenges of working in a young field––Jewish American art––through a handful of case studies\, with special emphasis on painter Raphael Soyer and sculptor Moses Jacob Ezekiel. More broadly\, the canon of twentieth-century American art boasts a disproportionate number of Jewish artists as compared to the country’s population\, a phenomenon only recently addressed. Artists as diverse as Abstract Expressionist Barnett Newman\, fashion photographer Richard Avedon\, and Photorealist Audrey Flack\, among dozens of others\, adopted Jewish subject matter. They sometimes did so overtly and at times that Jewishness was encoded\, yet those Jewish dimensions have been largely overlooked. Simultaneously an excavation of unfairly neglected artists and an investigation of the understudied religio-cultural dimension of celebrated artists––and even an effort to accord legitimacy to a subfield of art history––Jewish American art is a subject rich in material and long overdue for exploration.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CCPS Lecture. \"What’s in a Name? – A lot!\" From Gypsy to Rom: The Roma in Polish Discourse on Minorities
DESCRIPTION:The Romani population in Poland amounts to a mere 0.13%. However\, the image of the Gypsy is so deeply ingrained in Polish consciousness and culture that it serves as a constant fixture in a conceptual museum\, meticulously preserved\, yet frequently incongruous with reality.\n\n This lecture focuses on language as it reflects\, describes\, creates\, shapes\, and replicates the relationship between the Romani ethnic minority and the Polish ethnic majority. The presented analysis of various internet genres (including online discussions\, advertisements\, social media comments\, and memes) places this language use within the broader context of the ongoing Polish discourse on the position and role of ethnic and national minorities within contemporary Polish society. This diverse collection of statements reveals multiple threads of discourse\, spanning from the presence of Romani culture in folk rituals and traditions\, to the illusory semblance of tolerance and acceptance in a largely monocultural society\, as well as issues related to ethics and values\, such as attitudes towards work\, public property\, and ethnic identity.\n \n Ewa Małachowska-Pasek\, PhD\, is Ladislav Matějka Collegiate Lecturer and lecturer in Polish and Czech Studies in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at U-M. Her research focuses on language acquisition\, Critical Language Studies\, and Romani Studies. She teaches Polish and Czech and courses on the Roma minority in Central Europe. She is a co-founder and board member of the North American Association of Teachers of Polish\, and the co-translator of *The Romance of Teresa Hennert* by Zofia Nałkowska and *The Career of Nicodemus Dyzma* by Tadeusz Dołęga-Mostowicz (winner of the 2021 Found in Translation Award). Prior to her work at U-M\, she worked in the Polish Language Institute at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Penny Stamps Speaker Series - Machine Dazzle
DESCRIPTION:Creative provocateur Machine Dazzle has been dazzling stages via costumes\, sets\, and performance since his arrival in New York in 1994. An artist\, costume designer\, set designer\, singer/songwriter\, art director\, and maker\, Machine describes himself as a “radical queer emotionally driven\, instinct-based concept artist and thinker trapped in the role of costume designer\, sometimes.” Machine designs intricate\, unconventional wearable art pieces and bespoke installations.\n As a stage designer\, Machine has collaborated with artists from the New York downtown scene and beyond. Machine’s costumes and sets were featured in Taylor Mac’s Pulitzer Prize-nominated A 24-Decade History of Popular Music (a documentary film about which is currently streaming on Max). In 2019\, Dazzle was commissioned by the Guggenheim Museum and The Rockefeller Brothers Fund to create Treasure\, a rock and roll cabaret of original songs with an accompanying fashion show\, which debuted at Joe&#039\;s Pub in New York City in the fall of 2022. That same season\, he opened his first solo exhibition\, Queer Maximalism x Machine Dazzle\, at New York City&#039\;s Museum of Arts and Design. He won the 2017 Henry Hewes Design Award\, was a 2022 United States Artists Fellow\, and most recently won the 2023 Obie for sustained achievement in design.\nMachine is the recipient of 2023-2024 Roman J. Witt Residency\, and has been commissioned by UMMA and Stamps to create his first major museum commission\, a new sculptural installation called Ouroboros. The sculpture will evolve over three chapters from March through July 2024\, and use trash recovered from local waterways as its primary material to contemplate our own extravagant cycles of life\, death\, waste\, and rebirth.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Unseen Connections: A Natural History of the Cellphone
DESCRIPTION:What is the role of anthropology in a natural history museum in the 21st century? Thinking through the issues bundled up in this question\, within this talk I will discuss a new exhibit \"Cellphone: Unseen Connections\" that I curated at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. Cellphone examines cellular technology and its cultural\, ecological and social intersections around the world\, and is informed by a decade of interdisciplinary and collaborative research on cellular telephony in Washington D.C.. The exhibit consists of 750 objects\, a comic book mural\, interactive displays and 33 personal profiles of people along the cellphone’s global supply chain from 35 countries. Drawing inspiration from the relational perspectives of Indigenous world-making in Oceania\, as well as the moral and ethical obligations of political ecology\, this exhibit demonstrates how natural history is about\, and for\, everyone.\n\nhttps://ummsp.rackham.umich.edu/tribe-event/unseen-connections-a-natural-history-of-the-cellphone/

SUMMARY:Performance:Paul Thorn & Steve Poltz In the Ring Together Tour 2024
DESCRIPTION:A unique double bill! \n\nPaul Thorn and Steve Poltz might seem an odd pair. After all\, Paul is from the Deep South\, with a sound drenched in soul and blues\, while Steve\, who discovered Jewel\, comes from Canada and draws on the alternative spirit. When you think about it\, though\, they’re a perfect pair. They both have a brilliant sense of the audience that is matched by very few in the business. Both have an inexhaustible bag of songs that are both funny and piercing\, and they’re both adding to their songbags all the time. And both are absolute Ark favorites! Paul Thorn and Steve Poltz got together playing songs in the round on last year’s Cayamo cruise\, and we can’t wait to see what happens when they join forces.\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4374/4375 for more detail.
