SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Modernist Glass from the Polish Past
DESCRIPTION:The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass)\, the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. We are grateful to them for making this remarkable exhibit possible at CCPS and WCEE.\n\nOrganized by the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies\, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design and Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia.\n\nLearn more about the exhibition and the artists at https://myumi.ch/8eVrM\n\nThe exhibit opens on September 15\, 2023 in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact copernicus@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:CES Exhibition. Camera as Passport: The Ship of Photographers
DESCRIPTION:Starting in 1933 when Hitler and the Nazis came to power\, a cadre of European Jews—German\, Polish\, Hungarian\, Austrian\, French—discovered that a camera could be their passport\, first out of Germany and then out of Europe. Some of these women and men had been planning one type of career—lawyer\, journalist\, painter\, musician—but then realized that they needed to find another way to earn a living. Taking photographs presented a sufficiently malleable opportunity that not only allowed them to leave Germany and then Europe but also to have a means to sustain themselves in foreign countries where they did not necessarily speak the language.\n \n They did\, however\, mobilize the visual language of photography. For a number of these figures\, forced migration became an asset during the golden age of photojournalism wherein their portable services were employed to supply picture stories on the move and around the world. Many of these Jews became influential photographers\, shaping how their contemporaries saw the world. Looking back on their work\, we can see how they have influenced our understanding of the modern world even as we can recognize their photographs as a significant component of modern Jewish visual culture.\n \n Of the dozens of photographers who fled Europe\, eight escaped on a single ship. The S. S. Winnipeg sailed from Marseille\, France on May 7\, 1941. Germany had already conquered both eastern and western Europe and was poised to invade the Soviet Union. The United States was not yet in the war. Among the 750 refugees aboard were photographers from Hungary\, Belgium\, France\, and Germany: Ilse Bing\, Josef Breitenbach\, Boris Lipnitsky\, Charles Leirens\, Yolla Niclas\, Fred Stein\, Monie Tannen\, and Ylla (Camilla Henriette Koffler). During lifeboat drills\, they discovered each other. Some of them narrowly escaped Vichy France under the auspices of the American journalist Varian Fry and the New York-based Emergency Rescue Committee that helped so many Jewish and anti-Fascist artists get out of Europe in the nick of time.\n \n This exhibit introduces the University of Michigan to this intrepid group as exemplary case studies of the wide range of European photographers who used their cameras as passports to other worlds. It focuses first on their European experiences pre-emigration before turning to their escape from Europe on the S. S. Winnipeg (with three of them taking photos on board the ship). The exhibit concludes with examples of some of their initial photographic reactions to the new world\, seeing it through European eyes.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Propositions to Progress: A Working Atlas of the Global South
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, maps have served as a panoptic technology\, assisting imperial powers in governance\, discipline\, and control. In this exhibit\, internationally renowned Filipino artist Cian Dayrit acts as a counter-cartographer\, reclaiming mapmaking as an emancipatory activity.\n\nDayrit’s artworks\, embroidered on textiles or painted over collages of colonial-era maps\, plot the extraction of natural resources\, land grabbing\, and dispossession and displacement in his native Philippines. At the same time\, their resistant lines summon new imaginaries out of the overlaps between places and memories.\n\nDayrit’s practice is critically and practically informed by the narratives of Filipino communities. Items exhibited alongside his artwork are the result of map-drawing workshops the artist has convened with rural\, urban\, and indigenous communities across the Philippines. Propositions to Progress invites you to engage in the collaborative endeavor to activate alternative territories from the ground up.\n\nCian Dayrit is an interdisciplinary artist exploring colonialism and ethnography\, archaeology\, history\, and mythology. Dayrit subverts the language of the state\, museum\, and military to visualize the contradictions on which these institutions are built. He studied at the University of the Philippines.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Souq Stories: Gaza Lives
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit is an extension of Souq Stories (https://souqstories.insaniyyat.org/)\, which was displayed in 2021 in all seven of the historic markets it depicts in Gaza\, Nazareth\, Acre\, Nablus\, Jerusalem\, Khalil\, and Jaffa. Its youth group organizers aimed to bolster Palestinian unity across the systemic barriers — colonial divides\, military checkpoints\, walls\, etc. — that fragment the lives of people living in Palestine. \n\nSouq Stories: Gaza Lives brings us to present-day Gaza\, sharing the stories of\, and images captured by\, young journalists and photographers who have continued to document the realities of life in Palestine. It also honors one among them\, Fouad Abu Khammash\, who was killed in January 2024 in an Israeli bomb attack on Gaza.\n\n< The exhibit includes images of people suffering the aftermath of the ongoing violence. >\n\nThis exhibit was curated by Souq Stories team members Shareef Sarhan and Waed Abbas in partnership with U-M students Amir Marshi\, Zainab Hakim\, Mariam Odeh\, and Vivian M. Nguyen. It’s offered in conjunction with this year’s Palestine Awareness Week\, an annual series of educational events related to Palestinian history\, culture\, and politics. Presented in association with Insaniyyat: Society of Palestinian Anthropologists.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exile and the Mentor-student Relationship: A Force for Resistance and Decolonization
DESCRIPTION:This small exhibit features work in reproduction by Iraqi artists Hanaa Malallah and Mohammed Karim\, as well as an original painting by Karim. Both Malallah and Karim were significantly influenced by their mentors during and after their training in Iraq\, and continue to share their work and ideas with a new generation today.\n\nIn the United States\, Iraq is typically spoken about in a passive position: colonized\, under despotic rule\, occupied. Post-occupied. Through connections between mentors and students\, and students who became mentors to new students\, Iraqi artists have been a force for anti-colonialism\, claiming their heritage and its future for themselves.\n\nView the exhibit Monday-Friday in the Fine Arts Library\, Tappan Hall\, 855 S. University Ave.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Garden Repairs
DESCRIPTION:About the installation:\nGarden Repairs is an installation of paper textiles that loosely narrate the life cycle of plants. It considers the process of germination as a site for the cross-pollination of ideas from diverse disciplines around the future of the built environment. \n\nAbout the artist:\nSusan Goethel Campbell creates multi-disciplinary work that considers the contemporary landscape to be an emergent system where nature\, culture\, and the engineered environment are indistinguishable from one another. Central to her practice is the collection\, documentation\, and observation of seasonal change and ephemera in both natural and artificial environments. Her work is realized in several formats\, including installation\, video\, prints\, and drawings\, as well as projects that engage communities to look at local and global environments.\n\nCampbell earned an MFA in printmaking from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her work has been exhibited internationally in Belgium\, Germany\, Switzerland\, and Slovenia and nationally throughout the US\, including the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, Queens Art Museum\, Crystal Bridges Museum\, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit\, Grand Rapids Art Museum\, the Detroit Institute of Arts\, The Drawing Center\, and The International Print Center New York. In 2009 she was one of 18 artists selected for the inaugural Kresge Artist Fellowship.\n\nCampbell has been awarded residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts\, the Flemish Center for Graphic Arts\, the Jentel Foundation\, Beisinghoff Print Residency\, and the Print Research Institute of North Texas. She taught studio art for 15 years at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit and has been a visiting artist in numerous institutions in the United States and abroad. Her work is in the collection of the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, New York Public Library\, Detroit Institute of Arts\, Toledo Museum of Art\, and the University of Michigan Special Collections Library.\n\nThis project is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities' multi-year High Stakes Art initiative.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ISRMT seminar: A new isomonodromy deformation equation with movable branch points
DESCRIPTION:The isomonodromic deformation plays a universal role in\nconnecting various research areas of mathematics and physics. In this\ntalk\, I am going to discuss the isomonodromy theory for a new class of\nFuchsian-type elliptic second-order equations defined on the moduli\nspace of elliptic curves with the parameter τ ∈ H (upper half-plane).\nWe will observe that the isomonodromic deformation equation is\ngoverned by a new second-order nonlinear equation with a deep\nconnection to the Painlevé VI equation but admits essentially\ndifferent properties from PVI. Indeed\, the new isomonodromic\ndeformation equation\, distinct from the Painlevé VI equation\, admits\nso-called movable branch points that can be explicitly determined by\ntheir monodromy data.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:My Gender States
DESCRIPTION:On display at Lane Hall\, Rogério M. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States\,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \n\nUsing autoethnography\, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Marília\,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead\,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas\, gender states\, and his life experience—a story of the struggles\, fears\, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm\,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto’s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he\, a queer immigrant\, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials\, images\, and texts from \"Marília\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Collected are portrayals of Pinto’s gender states\, gender confusion\, gender embodiments\, gender doubt\, and reactions to gender stigma. \n\nRogério M. Pinto (Brazilian\, American\, b. 1965\, Belo Horizonte\, Brazil) is a University Diversity Social Transformation Professor\; Berit Ingersoll-Dayton Collegiate Professor of Social Work\; and Professor of Theatre and Drama\, School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, at the University of Michigan. Pinto uses art-based methods to conduct community-engaged research in the United States and Brazil.\n\nThe photographs used in \"My Gender States\" are by Emerson Granillo (American\, b. 1987)\; David Newton (American\, b. 1993)\; and Nicholas Williams (American\, b. 1994). The \"Realm\" assemblages featured in \"My Gender States\" were conceived by Pinto and designed by him\, in collaboration with Sarah Tanner. \n\n\"My Gender States\" is on display in the Lane Hall Exhibit Space (first floor\, 204 S State St) from January 23\, to August 13\, 2024. The exhibit is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.\n\nHosted by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women’s and Gender Studies Department.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Orson Welles as Family Man: Son\, Husband\, Father
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit provides a unique glimpse into the actor/director Orson Welles’ private life. Unlike previous U-M Library exhibits that focused on the artist at work\, this display shows him in informal and familial environments\, revealing a depth and complexity of character that are often overshadowed by his fame and professional achievements. The photographs and documents displayed showcase a variety of emotional tones — warmth\, humor\, tenderness\, and passion. Candid and relaxed more than posed\, they are similar to most people's pictures in old family albums.\n\nCulled from the Orson Welles-Beatrice Welles materials that are part of the Mavericks & Makers collection within the U-M Library’s Special Collections Research Center\, each photo or letter tells a story of a connection Welles held dearly. The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s\, when Welles was a teenager\, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s\, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife\, Paola Mori. \n\nIt should be noted that Welles’s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages\, including the Welles-Feder Collection and the Wilson-Welles Collection. The items on display here were saved by his third and final child\, Beatrice Welles\, and reflect her childhood memories of her parents.\n\nThe exhibit is available during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://umlib.us/hatchergalleryexhibits).

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Peter Dunn Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Peter Dunn has historically been an object maker as a designer and sculptor. Whether designing furniture or developing the ideas for sculpture\, the process has always been the same. Ideas begin as\nscribbled images that are then stretched and refined with CAD software. At its core\, much of the work studies the manipulation of simple geometry. Dunn looks at the form from different forced perspectives – exploding\, augmenting\, slicing\, repeating\, and lighting. This body of work is a study of perception\, sympathy\, hierarchy\, and reality. The “We Are Virus” series is an adaptation from an initial design where it continued to evolve and adapt through manipulation of parts and scale.\n\nPeter Dunn received his BFA from Wayne State University and MFA from University of Michigan. He currently serves on faculty at College for Creative Studies

The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andrea Carlson Future Cache
DESCRIPTION:In Andrea Carlson Future Cache\, a 40-foot-tall memorial wall towers over visitors\, commemorating the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians who were violently burned from their land in Northern Michigan on October 15\, 1900. Written across the walls above and around the memorial\, a statement proclaims Anishinaabe rights to the land we stand on: “You are on Anishinaabe Land.”  \n \nPresented alongside are paintings of imagined decolonized landscapes and a symbolic cache of provisions. Future Cache implicitly asks those who have benefited from the legacies of colonization to consider where they stand and where to go from here and seeks to foster a sense of belonging for displaced Indigenous peoples fighting for restitution.\n\nSpecial thanks to the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians\, Margaret Noodin\, and Richard A. Wiles\, for their consultation on the State Historical Marker text\; to Margaret Noodin and Michael Zimmerman\, Jr. for translating the gallery texts into Anishinaabemowin\; to James Horton and Fritz Swanson for generously producing the letterpress broadsides\; to colleagues at the U-M Biological Station\, U-M Museum of Anthropological Archaeology\, U-M Clements Library\, and U-M Clark Map Library. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Angkor Complex: Cultural Heritage and Post-Genocide Memory in Cambodia.
DESCRIPTION:Care in Uncertain Times\n \nAs crises of public health\, economic instability\, authoritarian regimes\, racial injustice\, and climate change spread around the globe\, millions are experiencing distress\, conflict\, uncertainty\, and vulnerability. This troubling combination of experiences is nothing new for Cambodians. Between 1975-1979\, when the Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia\, about a quarter of the country’s populations died of infectious diseases\, weapon wounds\, and malnutrition.\n \nThis exhibition brings together more than 80 works of art spanning a millennium to present how the visual culture of Cambodia and its diaspora has evolved in the face of cultural upheaval. Showcasing works from worldwide collections\, including those from some of the foremost members of the Cambodian contemporary art scene\, Angkor Complex allows viewers to encounter the still-fresh scars of a genocide and critically appreciate the strategies evolved to nurture resilience in trying times.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the U-M Office of the Provost\, U-M Office of the President\, National Endowment for the Arts\, Michigan Arts and Culture Council\, Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund\, and U-M Ross School of Business.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Curriculum / Collection
DESCRIPTION:In Curriculum / Collection\, an incredible variety of University of Michigan courses take material form. Collected for each course are objects that address the nature of materiality\, time\, and human interaction in relation to our environments\, our wars\, our relationships\, and our eccentricities. \n \nWorking in collaboration with University faculty\, the works in this exhibition were selected for their capacity to provoke engagement with the guiding questions and themes of their specific courses\, while also offering students inspiration for research and art projects in their areas of study. The exhibition demonstrates some of the diverse and creative ways art plays a central role in learning across the disciplines. It also asks us to consider what we can learn from art objects across an infinite variety of specialties and subject matter.\n \nAs classes begin in Fall of 2021\, you’ll be able to use these pages to explore the collections designed for each course\, dive into the works themselves\, and hear from the professors and students about how they are engaging with art and objects in new ways. Who knows\, maybe you’ll learn something surprising along the way\, too.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Erica Gervais Pappendick and Ted Pappendick\, and the Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund\, and the Oakriver Foundation.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Seminar Series: Jae-Kwang Kim\, Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean's Professor\, Department of Statistics\, Iowa State University
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Incorporating the auxiliary information into the survey estimation is a fundamental problem in survey sampling. Calibration weighting is a popular tool for incorporating the auxiliary information. The calibration weighting method of Deville and Sarndal (1992) uses a distance measure between the design weights and the final weights to solve the optimization problem with calibration constraints.\n\nIn this paper\, we propose a new framework using generalized entropy as the objective function for optimization. Design weights are used in the constraints\, rather than in the objective function\, to achieve design consistency. The new calibration framework is attractive as it is general and can produce more efficient calibration weights than the classical calibration weights. Furthermore\, we identify the optimal choice of the generalized entropy function that achieves the minimum variance among the different choices of the generalized entropy function under the same constraints. Asymptotic properties\, such as design consistency and asymptotic normality\, are presented rigorously. An extension of the proposed method to doubly robust propensity score estimation will also be presented.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Enhancing Safety\, Efficiency and Resilience in Advanced Air Mobility Through Geofencing\, Contingency Landing Management\, and Optimized Network Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Co-chairs: Ella Atkins & Max Li\n\nAbstract:\nAdvanced Air Mobility (AAM) is rapidly advancing\, poised to revolutionize transportation. This innovation promises efficient urban and regional transportation by bypassing ground congestion\, reducing emissions\, and enhancing connectivity. As efficient and safe transportation is vital for national well-being\, we face challenges that must be addressed. Our research contributes to the development of a safe and efficient AAM operational framework by offering novel solutions for airspace management\, contingency planning\, and optimal traffic network strategies. This presentation will highlight two key chapters of our work: 1. Assured contingency landing management\, providing solutions for distressed AAM scenarios\, and 2. Centralized and distributed AAM traffic management\, incorporating various constraints for seamless AAM operations.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Products from Pollution: Carbon Capture and Conversion
DESCRIPTION:Phasing out fossil fuels is a primary means to fight climate change\, but it alone is not enough. Even if all emissions ceased tomorrow\, atmospheric CO2 levels are already dangerously high and the climate would keep warming before it eventually stabilizes. We have to reduce or “capture” legacy CO2 to avert disaster. As the International Panel on Climate Change stated\, the *only* way we can meet our climate goal is to use carbon capture in our climate change fighting tool kit. \n\nMany of the products that we use every day are made with carbon. Treating legacy CO2 as a resource with economic value rather than a pollutant allows us to generate revenue while also fighting climate change. \n\nHowever\, not all uses or types of captured CO2 are equal in terms of environmental or economic benefits. This exhibit includes a video game that helps explain the pros and cons associated with different methods and applications of carbon capture. \n\nAdditionally\, it also provides examples of two types of carbon removal\, an interactive block activity\, and sample products made from captured CO2.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

This new spotlight surfaces research that has been conducted by many scholars for much longer\, highlighting their commitment to telling stories and honoring perspectives of diverse and minority communities. Their work reveals that while there is no unified queer experience in the region\, there is often a one-size-fits all state response to the reality of queer lives in many nations within the region. How can a queer-studies focus advance conversations about decolonization in East European and Eurasian Studies? To address this question\, Queer Focus will have six virtual panels featuring speakers from various disciplines and institutions. Panelists and participants will explore how gendered regimes were constitutive of Russo-centric relationships of power\, defining the region and how we study it\, as we collectively grapple with what it means to re-examine our current research\, teaching\, and institutional practices.\n\n*Panel 6 of the series will examine the role and impact of queer activism within the region.*

The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Earplugs are available from the carillonist upon request. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon: https://smtd.umich.edu/facilities/ann-and-robert-h-lurie-carillon/

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ESDM Parent Training Group – Spring 2024
DESCRIPTION:The University Center for the Child and Family is offering a new virtual session for the ESDM Parent Training Group in Spring 2024. The Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) is an evidence-based treatment model for young children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The group is designed for parents and caregivers with children ages 5 and under who have diagnosed or suspected ASD or a Developmental Delay.\n\nThe parent training group is designed to teach parents these strategies to increase the number of intervention hours that young children receive. A secondary goal is to support parents of children with ASD/Developmental Delays and help them develop a community of parents in a similar life stage. Since it is a parent training group\, children are welcome but not required to attend.\n\nRequirements:\n1. In order to enroll in the group\, the caregiver must have a child ages 5 or under who has diagnosed or suspected Autism Spectrum Disorder or developmental delay (e.g. speech delay\, Global Developmental Delay etc). \n\n2. Participating families must attend one group screening/orientation session prior to the start of the group\, to ensure that they are a good fit for the group. This initial screening appointment will last approximately 30-45 minutes.\n\nWhen: 12 – 1 p.m. Fridays\, beginning January 26 (10 weeks).\nWhere: Online via Zoom\n\nProspective clients should call UCCF at (734) 615-7853 to schedule their orientation/screening appointment.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Forests\, Global Change\, and Children's Health
DESCRIPTION:The health benefits of nature are attracting increasing popular and scientific attention\, but specific impacts of global change on human well-being remain poorly quantified and difficult to predict. In this talk\, Dr. Ricketts will describe ongoing efforts to estimate health impacts of land-use change in developing countries\, using a unique dataset including 800\,000 children in more than 40 countries.\n\nTo date\, his research has revealed that nearby forest cover and protected areas improve several dimensions of children’s health\, including water-borne disease\, stunting\, diet diversity\, and malaria. In all cases\, the impact of nature on health outcomes is stronger for more vulnerable populations. These and other studies can help to identify when and where nature conservation can constitute an investment in public health and social justice.\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by the School for Environment and Sustainability\, the International Institute\, the Office of Global Public Health\, and the Institute for Global Change Biology.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:UMMAA Brown Bag Lecture Series presents Elephant Musth in History and Prehistory
DESCRIPTION:Musth is a physiological phenomenon in elephants that is associated with mating dominance and aggression in males. Observed for centuries in captive Asian elephants used in warfare\, musth was first documented in wild African elephants in the 1980s. Meanwhile\, skeletal pathologies that apparently resulted from male-male fighting in mammoths and mastodons have for decades been interpreted as evidence that extinct relatives of living elephants also experienced musth\, and new analyses of testosterone preserved in tusk dentin corroborate these interpretations. Measurements performed on tusk samples using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry show that woolly mammoth bulls had annual surges in testosterone that matched those indicative of musth episodes in modern elephants. In addition to documenting musth in a third elephant species\, these data show that dental remains preserve steroid hormones that can persist for thousands of years and can be used to study endocrine physiology in paleobiological and archaeological contexts.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Presentation:Counter-Hypothetical Evidential Reasoning for Mobile Manipulation Robots
DESCRIPTION:Chair: Chad Jenkins\n\nAbstract:\nGeneral purpose robots must reliably estimate the pose of high degree-of-freedom objects within their environment despite the presence of heavy clutter and partial observability. While probabilistic inference offers a diagnosable framework to reason about these poses over time\, it currently lacks any explicit modeling of ambiguity or doubt. We introduce deep evidential reasoning to nonparametric Bayesian inference by representing ambiguity and doubt alongside the filter’s belief distribution.\n\nThis dissertation focuses on alleviating particle deprivation within nonparametric Bayesian inference for high degree-of-freedom pose estimation and tracking from monocular video. We present the counter-hypothetical particle filter\, which independently quantifies the disqualifying evidence against its particle set to detect failure mode and redistribute its samples. Our work then extends differentiable nonparametric belief propagation to model ambiguity as well as doubt—creating a hierarchy of the usefulness of the observations at each node. This presented approach\, Weighted And Graphical Evidential Reasoning (WAGER-DNBP)\, is validated on our contributed Progress LUMBER Dataset. Our 44k frame dataset includes pose annotations for a moving 29-link biped robot\, Digit\, and is unique for its feature of heavy occlusion caused by static and dynamic obstacles.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Gender (Still) Matters
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Yeşim Orhun will first present findings that document systematic gender performance differences (GPD) at a top business school using a unique administrative data set and survey of students and discuss possible reasons driving these differences. Results indicate that a female instructor significantly cuts down GPD for quantitative courses by raising the relative grades of female students. In addition\, female instructors increase women’s interest and performance expectations in these courses and are perceived as role models by their female students. These results provide support for a gender stereotype process for GPD and show that faculty can serve as powerful exemplars to challenge gender stereotypes and increase student achievement. Prof. Orhun will then briefly overview her current work exploring gender inequities in higher education\, health\, and labor contexts.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:International Students Career Series: How to Navigate Small Talk
DESCRIPTION:\"In the United States\, many people participate in what is called \"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"small talk\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\, where you make conversation with strangers or acquaintances about non-controversial topics\, such as the weather\, sports\, or popular television shows. “Small talk” is one of the ways in American culture to chat about harmless topics in order to establish a connection and start to build a friendship.\n\nFor example\, while waiting for an interview\, in line at a M-Den\, or in an elevator on campus\, don’t be startled if a stranger says something to you like\, “Did you watch the Football Game last night? What a game!” They might also make a joke about the long line you’re both in\, or comment on the current situation.\n\nIf you are interested in learning more about \"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"small talk\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\, now it’s your chance to sign up for this workshop on how to navigate small talk as an international student. In this workshop\, we will educate you on what is small talk and you will also have the chance to practice small talk with Peers!\"

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Bad Plants
DESCRIPTION:Sullivan has originated a number of influential ecocritical concepts\, most recently the \"dark green\,\" which this talk will introduce. The “dark green” draws awareness to the Anthropocene’s changes in culturally embedded human-plant relationships\, emphasizing our dependence on “darkened” (i.e. altered and polluted) vegetation that feeds us and the animals we eat\, and produces much of the oxygen we breathe.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Friday Seminar at RMC - Herbaria for understanding diversity and distribution: global to local and back again
DESCRIPTION:More to come!\nPreview: Herbaria are important repositories of plant diversity information\, but the degree to which they are useful in addressing biodiversity loss in the here and now has been questioned. How can a dead organism pressed on a bit of paper be of any use in addressing an urgent societal challenge especially in the face of widespread habitat loss in the tropics? Most of the world’s tropical plant species are known from five or fewer digitally available herbarium specimens\, with significant implications for all downstream analyses using species distribution data\, including conservation assessments\, biogeographic analyses\, protected area planning\, and taxonomic accounts. Digitized herbarium specimens\, however\, are biased. Specimens in large\, historical herbaria in richer countries are much more likely to be databased\, available online\, and imaged and therefore verifiable. Many such herbaria have a long colonial legacy and in many cases the bulk of their collections are online but often have\nbeen collected long ago. Conversely\, specimens in smaller\, local herbaria in poorer\, tropical countries are much less likely to be available online but have usually been collected much more recently\, however\, specimens in local herbaria are much less likely to be included in downstream analyses\, meaning local investigator’s contributions are less likely to be included\, with potential impacts on their careers. Using datasets of Begonia and Solanum from Perú I will explore the disproportionate contribution of local herbaria and botanists to our knowledge of tropical plant distributions\, and link this to the need for prioritization of these institutions for digital access and the importance of equity in science.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: A boundary integral equation method for superhydrophobic flow
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: We present the development of a fast and accurate boundary integral equation (BIE) method for the computation of two-dimensional incompressible Stokes flow over superhydrophobic (SH) surfaces. These surfaces are composed of alternating solid portions\, grooves\, or air pockets\, leading to enhanced slip\, and are particularly relevant for microfluidic device design. While BIE methods offer advantages in SH flow computations\, problems involving SH surfaces present challenges due to flow singularities resulting from complex surface microstructures. These challenges include mixed boundary conditions and geometric corners\, causing standard quadrature rules for smooth integrals to suffer from severe accuracy loss. Although often used adaptive mesh refinement can mitigate this issue\, it tends to grow the size of discretization significantly\, and has difficulties in achieving satisfactory accuracy due to linear system ill-conditioning. To resolve these issues\, we combine the Recursively Compressed Inverse Preconditioning (RCIP) method with a scaling technique\, kernel-split quadratures\, and the Fast Multipole Method. This incorporation yields a fast and accurate numerical scheme for SH flow computations. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method through several illustrative examples. This research is joint work with Shidong Jiang (Flatiron Institute) and Michael Siegel (New Jersey Institute of Technology).\n\nContact: Robert Krasny

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Department Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Department Colloquium featuring speaker: Hamid Taieb. \nTitle: Colours in Early Phenomenology\nAbstract: The aim of this talk is to present the views of early phenomenologists on colors. The first part of the talk will be devoted to their discussions on the essence of colors. As I will show\, early phenomenologists argue that colors are physical entities according to their essence\; more precisely\, they are primitive physical entities. In this respect\, early phenomenologists reject subjectivism about colors\, that is\, the thesis that colors are subjective or psychic entities as opposed to physical ones. In the second part of the talk\, I will briefly present the views of early phenomenologists on the existence of colors. As I will argue\, these authors think that the question of what colors are according to their essence is independent of the question of whether they exist in the outer world or not. In the third part of the talk\, I will ask how early phenomenologists can ground truths about the nature of colors\, in particular the truth that colors are physical\, if these truths are independent of whether colors exist in the outer world\, and thus hold even if they do not.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Discrete Morse Theory for Symmetric Delta-complexes
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we generalize discrete Morse theory to the context of symmetric Delta-complexes. First introduced by Forman\, discrete Morse theory is an adaptation of Morse theory for regular CW-complexes. It gives a schematic for collapsing cells in a CW-complex while maintaining the same homotopy type. On the other hand\, symmetric Delta-complexes are a generalization of cell-complexes. They are topological spaces built from quotients of standard simplices\, and they have played important roles in recent developments of tropical geometry. We generalize various concepts from discrete Morse theory\, including discrete Morse functions and acyclic matchings on face posets\, and prove parallel theorems for symmetric Delta-complexes. We also apply this new theory to the moduli space of tropical abelian varieties.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Beauville decomposition
DESCRIPTION:Mukai's seminal work proved that the \"convolution\" with the Poincaré line bundle induces an equivalence of the derived categories of an abelian variety and its dual variety. This equivalence specializes to rational Chow groups of these varieties are isomorphic. We will exploit this structure to exhibit that the rational Chow ring of an abelian variety has an interesting decomposition called the Beauville decomposition.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Annual Thomas R. Trautmann Honorary Lecture | The Exemption that Proves the Rule: Reading Law Between the Lines of South Asian Foundation Charters
DESCRIPTION:This talk presents examples of how medieval South Asian inscriptions\, though created to address quite particular circumstances and to serve immediate purposes\, can be analyzed to disclose otherwise unrecorded laws and legal principles that had general validity at the time of their inscribing. It will focus on foundation charters: grant decrees that confer on the beneficiary property rights that can include tax exemption and various other immunities and privileges\, including a degree of juridical autonomy. By carving out exemptions to otherwise applicable rules and norms\, such charters allow us to reconstruct some of what is implicit: the laws generally enforced by royal and other civil authorities. Furthermore\, they tell us some important things about the relationship between religion and state.\n \n Timothy Lubin is the Jessie Ball duPont Professor of Religion\, Adjunct Professor of Law\, and Head of the Law\, Justice and Society program at Washington and Lee University. With degrees from Columbia University (BA\, and PhD in the study of religion) and Harvard University (MTS)\, he taught earlier at Harvard and the University of Virginia. He has published widely on shifts in Brahmanical doctrine and ritual in ancient and medieval South Asia\, the propagation of Dharmaśāstra (sacred law) and juridical norms reflected in inscriptions\, and how these were appropriated in diverse regions including Nepal and Southeast Asia\, where they inflected and were in turn transformed by local traditions. This work informs his contributions to the comparative study of premodern law.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Linguistics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Jessi Grieser is an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on the use of African American Language style in the creation and maintenance of identities which are not necessarily ethnoracial in nature\, particularly identities of place and class\, with healthy side servings of geosemiotics and the study of language online. Jessi works using the methods of discourse analysis\, sociophonetics\, and quantitative variationist analysis\, and especially the intersections thereof. \n\nTITLE\nThe Art of Invention\n\nABSTRACT \nThis talk addresses one of the thorniest questions facing new graduate students: where do I get good ideas and how do I develop them in useful ways? Using my own career as a case study\, I'll talk about successes and failures\, and unexpected detours and I'll demonstrate 7 techniques of idea generation which have shaped my work. We'll also talk about what it means to get a Ph.D. more generally and I'll give five tips about how to interact with your work and others in ways that produce scholarly output\, can make the process of becoming a Ph.D. straightforward and perhaps\, even fun. \n\nJoin us in person or virtually

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Los Hijos Film Collective
DESCRIPTION:Film collective Los hijos was founded in 2008. Their radical forms of filmic experimentation combined video art\, ethnography\, and avant-garde cinema to deconstruct established and hegemonic narratives about Spanish identity and history. In films like Los materiales (2009)\, Enero 2012 o el apoteosis de Isabel la Católica (2012) or Árboles (2013)\, Natalia Marín Sancho\, Javier Fernández Vázquez\, and Luis López Carrasco touch upon salient issues such as the Spanish colonial presence in Guinea\, the legacies of the fascist dictatorship of Francisco Franco\, and the widespread consequences of the social and economic crisis of 2008.\n\nPlease join us in a series of seminars\, workshops\, and lectures where Los hijos will reflect on how filmic experimentation can shed a light on colonial domination\, political violence\, social class discrimination\, and racism in contemporary Spain. *All events will be hybrid\, by RSVP\, and conducted in Spanish.*

SUMMARY:Presentation:Twisted rabbit problems in higher degree
DESCRIPTION:In the 1980s Hubbard proposed a compelling question: when composing a polynomial known as the rabbit polynomial with a homeomorphism\, the resulting map is equivalent to another (possibly different) polynomial. This question remained open for 25 years until Bartholdi–Nekrashevych solved in in 2006. In this talk\, I highlight work with Mukundan and with Lanier that uses the combinatorial topological algorithm developed with Belk\, Lanier\, and Margalit to solve higher degree analogues of Hubbard's twisted rabbit problem. Our solutions reveal structure within unicritical degree-d polynomials in which the critical point is periodic and introduce accessible questions. This is a joint meeting of the dynamics seminar + the geometry seminar.

SUMMARY:Performance:Ni une más
DESCRIPTION:A trailblazing world premiere production\, *Ni une más* braids music\, theatre\, and dance to tell survivors’ stories of growing agency. From the tender “Te recuerdo” (I remember you) to the rumbling subway sounds of “Metro Asfixia\;” from the ironic rap\, “This Doesn’t Happen at Michigan\,” to the foot-stomping chorus\, “It’s Not My Fault\,” this audience-engaging production is both mesmerizing and memorable.\n\nOur production team – led by GRAMMY-nominated artistic director and composer Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra with award-winning journalists Ana Ávila and María Arce\, and athlete Tad DeLuca – co-created new material for *Ni une más* with survivors. The title is based on a slogan used in many Latin American countries to stand up to domestic violence and femicide. As gender-based violence is a local and global health crisis\, we move this often-silenced topic to the spotlight to transform trauma into healing power through the arts.\n\n*Ni une más* was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan\, and is co-sponsored by the Office of Diversity\, Equity & Inclusion\; the School of Music\, Theatre & Dance’s Research Catalyst and Innovation Grant\; The Institute for Research on Women and Gender\; the CEW+ Frances & Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund\; Communications & Media\; Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center\; Sociology\; Bethlehem United Church of Christ\; and Avalon Healing Center (Detroit).

SUMMARY:Performance:Eleven Months of Nuclear Summer
DESCRIPTION:*Eleven Months of Nuclear Summer* follows six staff members navigating the joy and politics of the summer camp preseason when the nuclear apocalypse takes away everything they have\, except each other. Over the course of the next year\, their numbers diminish as they jockey for power\, fight for love\, and maintain hope for as long as they can. The lines between love\, sex\, and friendship blur\, with platonic and romantic love playing equally vital roles. Hope and community are the throughlines that keep the show moving forward. Flawed and deeply human characters fight to make both high- and low-stakes decisions\; life and death are important\, but so are the group’s sexual politics and vodka supply.\n\nContent Warnings: Show contains dark themes\, including death\, bombing (heavily mentioned but not portrayed)\, and violence.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Sea The Sea
DESCRIPTION:“Two of the loveliest male-female voices you might ever hear” – Huffington Post\n\nThe Sea The Sea is an upstate New York–based indie folk-pop duo-band whose debut release\, \"Love We Are We Love\,\" received praise from NPR\, American Songwriter\, and No Depression\, among others\, gathering well over a million streams on Spotify. Mountain Stage's Larry Groce calls them \"ready to take their place among the best young male/female duos now performing.\" The duo has earned features by Apple Music including Best of the Week and A-List Singer/Songwriter. The Sea The Sea takes its name from the ancient Greek motto (from The Exploits of Xenophon) that also supplied the name of Iris Murdoch's novel (which they also love). Mira Stanley\, half of The Sea The Sea\, is a U-M graduate who worked at Matthaei Botanical Gardens after graduating.\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4620/4621 for more detail.
