Modernist Glass from the Polish Past DESCRIPTION:The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass)\, the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. Camera as Passport: The Ship of Photographers DESCRIPTION:Starting in 1933 when Hitler and the Nazis came to power\, a cadre of European Jews—German\, Polish\, Hungarian\, Austrian\, French—discovered that a camera could be their passport\, first out of Germany and then out of Europe. Some of these women and men had been planning one type of career—lawyer\, journalist\, painter\, musician—but then realized that they needed to find another way to earn a living. Taking photographs presented a sufficiently malleable opportunity that not only allowed them to leave Germany and then Europe but also to have a means to sustain themselves in foreign countries where they did not necessarily speak the language.\n \n They did\, however\, mobilize the visual language of photography. For a number of these figures\, forced migration became an asset during the golden age of photojournalism wherein their portable services were employed to supply picture stories on the move and around the world. Many of these Jews became influential photographers\, shaping how their contemporaries saw the world. Looking back on their work\, we can see how they have influenced our understanding of the modern world even as we can recognize their photographs as a significant component of modern Jewish visual culture.\n \n Of the dozens of photographers who fled Europe\, eight escaped on a single ship. The S. S. Winnipeg sailed from Marseille\, France on May 7\, 1941. Germany had already conquered both eastern and western Europe and was poised to invade the Soviet Union. The United States was not yet in the war. Among the 750 refugees aboard were photographers from Hungary\, Belgium\, France\, and Germany: Ilse Bing\, Josef Breitenbach\, Boris Lipnitsky\, Charles Leirens\, Yolla Niclas\, Fred Stein\, Monie Tannen\, and Ylla (Camilla Henriette Koffler). During lifeboat drills\, they discovered each other. Some of them narrowly escaped Vichy France under the auspices of the American journalist Varian Fry and the New York-based Emergency Rescue Committee that helped so many Jewish and anti-Fascist artists get out of Europe in the nick of time.\n \n This exhibit introduces the University of Michigan to this intrepid group as exemplary case studies of the wide range of European photographers who used their cameras as passports to other worlds. It focuses first on their European experiences pre-emigration before turning to their escape from Europe on the S. S. Winnipeg (with three of them taking photos on board the ship). In this exhibit\, internationally renowned Filipino artist Cian Dayrit acts as a counter-cartographer\, reclaiming mapmaking as an emancipatory activity.\n\nDayrit’s artworks\, embroidered on textiles or painted over collages of colonial-era maps\, plot the extraction of natural resources\, land grabbing\, and dispossession and displacement in his native Philippines. At the same time\, their resistant lines summon new imaginaries out of the overlaps between places and memories.\n\nDayrit’s practice is critically and practically informed by the narratives of Filipino communities. Central to her practice is the collection\, documentation\, and observation of seasonal change and ephemera in both natural and artificial environments. Her work is realized in several formats\, including installation\, video\, prints\, and drawings\, as well as projects that engage communities to look at local and global environments.\n\nCampbell earned an MFA in printmaking from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her work has been exhibited internationally in Belgium\, Germany\, Switzerland\, and Slovenia and nationally throughout the US\, including the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, Queens Art Museum\, Crystal Bridges Museum\, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit\, Grand Rapids Art Museum\, the Detroit Institute of Arts\, The Drawing Center\, and The International Print Center New York. In 2009 she was one of 18 artists selected for the inaugural Kresge Artist Fellowship.\n\nCampbell has been awarded residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts\, the Flemish Center for Graphic Arts\, the Jentel Foundation\, Beisinghoff Print Residency\, and the Print Research Institute of North Texas. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States\,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \n\nUsing autoethnography\, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Marília\,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead\,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas\, gender states\, and his life experience—a story of the struggles\, fears\, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm\,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto’s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he\, a queer immigrant\, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials\, images\, and texts from \"Marília\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Unlike previous U-M Library exhibits that focused on the artist at work\, this display shows him in informal and familial environments\, revealing a depth and complexity of character that are often overshadowed by his fame and professional achievements. The photographs and documents displayed showcase a variety of emotional tones — warmth\, humor\, tenderness\, and passion. Candid and relaxed more than posed\, they are similar to most people's pictures in old family albums.\n\nCulled from the Orson Welles-Beatrice Welles materials that are part of the Mavericks & Makers collection within the U-M Library’s Special Collections Research Center\, each photo or letter tells a story of a connection Welles held dearly. The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s\, when Welles was a teenager\, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s\, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife\, Paola Mori. \n\nIt should be noted that Welles’s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages\, including the Welles-Feder Collection and the Wilson-Welles Collection. Whether designing furniture or developing the ideas for sculpture\, the process has always been the same. Ideas begin as\nscribbled images that are then stretched and refined with CAD software. At its core\, much of the work studies the manipulation of simple geometry. Dunn looks at the form from different forced perspectives – exploding\, augmenting\, slicing\, repeating\, and lighting. This body of work is a study of perception\, sympathy\, hierarchy\, and reality. The “We Are Virus” series is an adaptation from an initial design where it continued to evolve and adapt through manipulation of parts and scale.\n\nPeter Dunn received his BFA from Wayne State University and MFA from University of Michigan. Even if all emissions ceased tomorrow\, atmospheric CO2 levels are already dangerously high and the climate would keep warming before it eventually stabilizes. We have to reduce or “capture” legacy CO2 to avert disaster. As the International Panel on Climate Change stated\, the *only* way we can meet our climate goal is to use carbon capture in our climate change fighting tool kit. \n\nMany of the products that we use every day are made with carbon. Treating legacy CO2 as a resource with economic value rather than a pollutant allows us to generate revenue while also fighting climate change. \n\nHowever\, not all uses or types of captured CO2 are equal in terms of environmental or economic benefits. Amongst many other things\, he identified the minimum amount of redundancy that needs to be added to a communication to enable reliable decoding on reception. Since then\, the paradigm has been to co-design cleverly restricted classes of mathematically precise grammars called codes with code-specific correction algorithms called decoders.\n\nIn this talk\, we introduce Guessing Random Additive Noise Decoding (GRAND)\, class of error correction decoders based on a readily understood paradigm that makes them suitable for use with any moderate redundancy code of any length. Even though the first mathematical analysis was only published in 2018\, GRAND has already resulted in taped-out chips that demonstrate its class-leading efficiency in silicon. In this talk\, we explain the theoretical insight behind GRAND as well as recent developments that demonstrate its ability to decode long low-rate codes more accurately and efficiently than those in widely used standards.\n\nThe work is based on a collaboration with Muriel Medard (MIT)\, with the circuits elements performed in collaboration with Rabia Yazicigil (BU)\, as well as their groups.\n\nBio\n\nKen R. Duffy is a Professor at Northeastern University with a joint appointment in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering\, where he currently serves as Interim Chair\, and the Department of Mathematics. He was previously a Professor at Maynooth University in Ireland where he was the Director of the Hamilton Institute\, an interdisciplinary applied mathematics research centre\, from 2016 to 2022. He was one of three co-Directors of the Science Foundation Ireland Centre for Research Training in Foundations of Data Science\, which funded more than 120 PhD students.\n\nHe obtained a Ph.D. in probability theory in 2000 from Trinity College Dublin under the supervision of the late John T. Lewis. He works in works collaborative multi-disciplinary teams to design\, analyse and realise algorithms using tools from probability\, statistics\, and machine learning. Algorithms he has developed have been implemented in digital circuits and in DNA. Antoinette will elaborate on how good organizations view prosperity as a means to the end of collective development and good work\, aiming to enable the good life of all stakeholders touched by the organization. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. However\, research on canine assemblies and structural variations have lagged behind human\, mouse\, or rat research due to a lack of genomic resources\, and an important part of these are duplication. Large genomic duplications have gone relatively uninvestigated in modern canine research\, largely due to the difficulties in assembling and assessing them properly as a result of their size and conflicting nature. In this investigation\, with the recent explosion and availability of canine genomic researchers\, we searched for structural variations\, copy number variations\, and retrocopies\, which are all subcategories of genomic duplications. By comparing unique retrocopies across the nine canines we have available\, and calculating the number of generations since genome divergence\, we were able to determine a rate of novel retrocopy insertion at an average of 1/693 births. Together\, our investigation illustrates both the difficulties of finding duplications and retrocopies\, and highlights the variable representation of duplications across canines. Using Netflix as a case study\, I focus on the recent public debate surrounding its failed attempt to add a playback speed feature to its streaming platform. World-renowned filmmakers pushed Netflix to shelve this idea when it was first introduced in 2018\, claiming their films were not intended to be watched twice as fast. Yet\, citing “requests from deaf and blind subscribers\,” Netflix decided to add this feature to its interface in August 2020\, when millions were sheltering-in-place due to the pandemic. This presentation asks what led to this decision\, and what can the marketing discourse surrounding it teach us about how corporations monetize “accessibility.” Theorizing the difference between \"time-shifting\" and \"time-hacking\"\, I argue that speed-watching is a mode of survival enabling different users to advance a wide range of goals: media literacy\, the thrill of speed\, and avoiding a mortifying fear of boredom.\n\nNeta Alexander is an Assistant Professor of Film and Media at Colgate University\, NY and a former Assistant Editor of the Journal of Cinema and Media Studies (JCMS). It is the large-population limit of a heterogeneously interacting diffusive particle system\, where the interaction is of mean-field type with weights characterized by an underlying graphon function. Through observation of continuous-time trajectories within the particle system\, we construct plug-in estimators of the particle density\, the drift coefficient\, and thus the graphon interaction weights of the mean-field system. Our estimators for the density and drift are direct results of kernel interpolation on the empirical data\, and a deconvolution method leads to an estimator of the underlying graphon function. We show that\, as the number of particles increases\, the graphon estimator converges to the true graphon function pointwisely\, and as a consequence\, in the cut metric. While most pundits and many scholars find this a question easy to answer in the affirmative\, to date\, little rigorous evidence has been adduced on Trump’s institutional consequences. Based on surveys of representative samples of the American people in July 2020\, December 2020\, March 2021\, and June 2021\, my analysis examines in great detail whether American political institutions lost legitimacy over the period from before the presidential election to well after it and whether any such loss is associated with acceptance of the “Big Lie” about the election and its aftermath. With one exception\, my highly contrarian conclusion is simple: try as they might (and did)\, Trump and his Republicans did not\, in fact\, succeed in undermining American national political institutions. The empirical evidence indicates that institutions seem to be more resilient than many have imagined\, just as the Legitimacy Theory would predict. The exception\, however\, is of utmost importance for American politics: Among African Americans\, support for democratic institutions and values waned considerably\, largely as a consequence of factors such as the insurrection and experience\, vicarious and personal\, with unfair treatment by legal authorities.\n \nJames L. It helped clarify the V-A character of the weak interaction [1] and continues to be pivotal in probing for physics beyond the Standard Model by examining potential deviations [2]. During the beta decay of helium-6\, the emitted beta particle corresponds to an expanding spherical shell of charge or Coulomb pulse that can eject one or both electrons. This shake-off must be accounted for in balancing energy and momentum to determine the critical electron antineutrino angular correlations. The principal challenge lies in separating the overlapping single and double ionization channels. Calculations have consistently overestimated double ionization compared with observations [3]. Our new theoretical method addresses this by partitioning the overlapping states into distinct charge states using projection operators [4]. This results in closer alignment with experiment\; however\, discrepancies persist. I will outline our continuing efforts to refine this approach\, highlighting the use of delta function matrix elements to assess the fidelity of the daughter ion's charge state.\n\nThe one-electron pseudostates used to form the aforementioned projection operators are interesting in their own right. These pseudospectra are useful in several atomic physics problems requiring a complete set of states\, especially those with important contributions from very-high-energy intermediate states. An example of this is the Bethe logarithm component of the Lamb shift\, a leading order QED correction [5]. Our current activities on this problem will also be discussed.\n\nFurthermore\, I will touch on recent work concerning the theory of radiative transitions\, where the usual gauge equivalence of the length and velocity forms applies only in the limit of infinite nuclear mass. We have extended this to the case of finite nuclear mass [6]\, developing a formalism which imposes strict constraints on calculations of atomic properties involving n-photon transitions\, such as absorption and spontaneous decay.\n\n[1] T. Much of its structure is now understood\, but a critical question remains unresolved: is the Mandelbrot set locally connected? The first major breakthrough towards this conjecture was achieved by Yoccoz in the nineties\, who proved that the Mandelbrot set is locally connected at all parameters which are not infinitely quadratic-like renormalizable. A key ingredient in Yoccoz’s work is the PLY-inequality\, which bounds the diameter of certain subsets\, called limbs\, of the Mandelbrot set. These limbs are naturally labeled by the rational numbers\, and the PLY-inequality asserts that the p/q-limb of the Mandelbrot set has size O(1/q). Milnor conjectured that O(1/q2) is the correct scale. For any N ≥ 1\, the main result of this thesis is to verify Milnor’s conjecture for all p/q-limbs where a finite continued fraction of p/q has uniformly bounded length. Our strategy relies on careful analysis of the bifurcation of parabolic fixed points\; we also further develop some of the classical theory in this area. We introduce parabolic and near-parabolic renormalization operators for maps which have parabolic fixed points of arbitrary multiplier and there perturbations\, constructing invariant classes for these operators. We provide an alternative definition to the parabolic towers introduced by Epstein and construct a dynamically natural topology on the space of all parabolic towers. We also study the dynamics of Lavaurs maps\, constructing analogues of polynomial external rays for these functions showing that these rays arise as the Hausdorff limits of polynomial external rays.
