SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Modernist Glass from the Polish Past
DESCRIPTION:The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass)\, the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. We are grateful to them for making this remarkable exhibit possible at CCPS and WCEE.\n\nOrganized by the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies\, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Penny W. SUMMARY:Exhibition:CES Exhibition. Camera as Passport: The Ship of Photographers
DESCRIPTION:Starting in 1933 when Hitler and the Nazis came to power\, a cadre of European Jews—German\, Polish\, Hungarian\, Austrian\, French—discovered that a camera could be their passport\, first out of Germany and then out of Europe. Some of these women and men had been planning one type of career—lawyer\, journalist\, painter\, musician—but then realized that they needed to find another way to earn a living. Taking photographs presented a sufficiently malleable opportunity that not only allowed them to leave Germany and then Europe but also to have a means to sustain themselves in foreign countries where they did not necessarily speak the language.\n   \n   They did\, however\, mobilize the visual language of photography. For a number of these figures\, forced migration became an asset during the golden age of photojournalism wherein their portable services were employed to supply picture stories on the move and around the world. Many of these Jews became influential photographers\, shaping how their contemporaries saw the world. Looking back on their work\, we can see how they have influenced our understanding of the modern world even as we can recognize their photographs as a significant component of modern Jewish visual culture.\n   \n   Of the dozens of photographers who fled Europe\, eight escaped on a single ship. The S. S. Winnipeg sailed from Marseille\, France on May 7\, 1941. Germany had already conquered both eastern and western Europe and was poised to invade the Soviet Union. The United States was not yet in the war. Among the 750 refugees aboard were photographers from Hungary\, Belgium\, France\, and Germany: Ilse Bing\, Josef Breitenbach\, Boris Lipnitsky\, Charles Leirens\, Yolla Niclas\, Fred Stein\, Monie Tannen\, and Ylla (Camilla Henriette Koffler). During lifeboat drills\, they discovered each other. Some of them narrowly escaped Vichy France under the auspices of the American journalist Varian Fry and the New York-based Emergency Rescue Committee that helped so many Jewish and anti-Fascist artists get out of Europe in the nick of time.\n   \n   This exhibit introduces the University of Michigan to this intrepid group as exemplary case studies of the wide range of European photographers who used their cameras as passports to other worlds. It focuses first on their European experiences pre-emigration before turning to their escape from Europe on the S. S. Winnipeg (with three of them taking photos on board the ship). The exhibit concludes with examples of some of their initial photographic reactions to the new world\, seeing it through European eyes.\n   \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. DESCRIPTION:This exhibit\, created by the student organization DigiPaint\, showcases 22 illustrations created by participating club members. Each year\, DigiPaint produces a zine featuring art created in response to a thematic prompt. The pieces on display have been printed from the 2023 zine\, \"Dreams and Nightmares.\"\n\nDigiPaint is the University of Michigan’s first student organization dedicated to digital painting. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Propositions to Progress: A Working Atlas of the Global South
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, maps have served as a panoptic technology\, assisting imperial powers in governance\, discipline\, and control. In this exhibit\, internationally renowned Filipino artist Cian Dayrit acts as a counter-cartographer\, reclaiming mapmaking as an emancipatory activity.\n\nDayrit’s artworks\, embroidered on textiles or painted over collages of colonial-era maps\, plot the extraction of natural resources\, land grabbing\, and dispossession and displacement in his native Philippines. At the same time\, their resistant lines summon new imaginaries out of the overlaps between places and memories.\n\nDayrit’s practice is critically and practically informed by the narratives of Filipino communities. Items exhibited alongside his artwork are the result of map-drawing workshops the artist has convened with rural\, urban\, and indigenous communities across the Philippines. Propositions to Progress invites you to engage in the collaborative endeavor to activate alternative territories from the ground up.\n\nCian Dayrit is an interdisciplinary artist exploring colonialism and ethnography\, archaeology\, history\, and mythology. Dayrit subverts the language of the state\, museum\, and military to visualize the contradictions on which these institutions are built. He studied at the University of the Philippines.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Souq Stories: Gaza Lives
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit is an extension of Souq Stories (https://souqstories.insaniyyat.org/)\, which was displayed in 2021 in all seven of the historic markets it depicts in Gaza\, Nazareth\, Acre\, Nablus\, Jerusalem\, Khalil\, and Jaffa. Its youth group organizers aimed to bolster Palestinian unity across the systemic barriers — colonial divides\, military checkpoints\, walls\, etc. — that fragment the lives of people living in Palestine. \n\nSouq Stories: Gaza Lives brings us to present-day Gaza\, sharing the stories of\, and images captured by\, young journalists and photographers who have continued to document the realities of life in Palestine. It also honors one among them\, Fouad Abu Khammash\, who was killed in January 2024 in an Israeli bomb attack on Gaza.\n\n< The exhibit includes images of people suffering the aftermath of the ongoing violence. >\n\nThis exhibit was curated by Souq Stories team members Shareef Sarhan and Waed Abbas in partnership with U-M students Amir Marshi\, Zainab Hakim\, Mariam Odeh\, and Vivian M. Nguyen. It’s offered in conjunction with this year’s Palestine Awareness Week\, an annual series of educational events related to Palestinian history\, culture\, and politics. DESCRIPTION:This small exhibit features work in reproduction by Iraqi artists Hanaa Malallah and Mohammed Karim\, as well as an original painting by Karim. Both Malallah and Karim were significantly influenced by their mentors during and after their training in Iraq\, and continue to share their work and ideas with a new generation today.\n\nIn the United States\, Iraq is typically spoken about in a passive position: colonized\, under despotic rule\, occupied. Post-occupied. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Garden Repairs
DESCRIPTION:About the installation:\nGarden Repairs is an installation of paper textiles that loosely narrate the life cycle of plants. It considers the process of germination as a site for the cross-pollination of ideas from diverse disciplines around the future of the built environment. \n\nAbout the artist:\nSusan Goethel Campbell creates multi-disciplinary work that considers the contemporary landscape to be an emergent system where nature\, culture\, and the engineered environment are indistinguishable from one another. Central to her practice is the collection\, documentation\, and observation of seasonal change and ephemera in both natural and artificial environments. Her work is realized in several formats\, including installation\, video\, prints\, and drawings\, as well as projects that engage communities to look at local and global environments.\n\nCampbell earned an MFA in printmaking from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her work has been exhibited internationally in Belgium\, Germany\, Switzerland\, and Slovenia and nationally throughout the US\, including the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, Queens Art Museum\, Crystal Bridges Museum\, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit\, Grand Rapids Art Museum\, the Detroit Institute of Arts\, The Drawing Center\, and The International Print Center New York. In 2009 she was one of 18 artists selected for the inaugural Kresge Artist Fellowship.\n\nCampbell has been awarded residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts\, the Flemish Center for Graphic Arts\, the Jentel Foundation\, Beisinghoff Print Residency\, and the Print Research Institute of North Texas. She taught studio art for 15 years at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit and has been a visiting artist in numerous institutions in the United States and abroad. Her work is in the collection of the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, New York Public Library\, Detroit Institute of Arts\, Toledo Museum of Art\, and the University of Michigan Special Collections Library.\n\nThis project is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities' multi-year High Stakes Art initiative.

DESCRIPTION:On display at Lane Hall\, Rogério M. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States\,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \n\nUsing autoethnography\, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Marília\,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead\,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas\, gender states\, and his life experience—a story of the struggles\, fears\, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm\,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto’s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he\, a queer immigrant\, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials\, images\, and texts from \"Marília\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Collected are portrayals of Pinto’s gender states\, gender confusion\, gender embodiments\, gender doubt\, and reactions to gender stigma. \n\nRogério M. Pinto (Brazilian\, American\, b. 1965\, Belo Horizonte\, Brazil) is a University Diversity Social Transformation Professor\; Berit Ingersoll-Dayton Collegiate Professor of Social Work\; and Professor of Theatre and Drama\, School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, at the University of Michigan. Pinto uses art-based methods to conduct community-engaged research in the United States and Brazil.\n\nThe photographs used in \"My Gender States\" are by Emerson Granillo (American\, b. 1987)\; David Newton (American\, b. 1993)\; and Nicholas Williams (American\, b. 1994). The \"Realm\" assemblages featured in \"My Gender States\" were conceived by Pinto and designed by him\, in collaboration with Sarah Tanner. \n\n\"My Gender States\" is on display in the Lane Hall Exhibit Space (first floor\, 204 S State St) from January 23\, to August 13\, 2024. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Orson Welles as Family Man: Son\, Husband\, Father
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit provides a unique glimpse into the actor/director Orson Welles’ private life. Unlike previous U-M Library exhibits that focused on the artist at work\, this display shows him in informal and familial environments\, revealing a depth and complexity of character that are often overshadowed by his fame and professional achievements. The photographs and documents displayed showcase a variety of emotional tones — warmth\, humor\, tenderness\, and passion. Candid and relaxed more than posed\, they are similar to most people's pictures in old family albums.\n\nCulled from the Orson Welles-Beatrice Welles materials that are part of the Mavericks & Makers collection within the U-M Library’s Special Collections Research Center\, each photo or letter tells a story of a connection Welles held dearly. The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s\, when Welles was a teenager\, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s\, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife\, Paola Mori. \n\nIt should be noted that Welles’s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages\, including the Welles-Feder Collection and the Wilson-Welles Collection. The items on display here were saved by his third and final child\, Beatrice Welles\, and reflect her childhood memories of her parents.\n\nThe exhibit is available during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://umlib.us/hatchergalleryexhibits).

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Peter Dunn Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Peter Dunn has historically been an object maker as a designer and sculptor. Whether designing furniture or developing the ideas for sculpture\, the process has always been the same. Ideas begin as\nscribbled images that are then stretched and refined with CAD software.  At its core\, much of the work studies the manipulation of simple geometry.  Dunn looks at the form from different forced perspectives – exploding\, augmenting\, slicing\, repeating\, and lighting.  This body of work is a study of perception\, sympathy\, hierarchy\, and reality. The “We Are Virus” series is an adaptation from an initial design where it continued to evolve and adapt through manipulation of parts and scale.\n\nPeter Dunn received his BFA from Wayne State University and MFA from University of Michigan.  He currently serves on faculty at College for Creative Studies

DESCRIPTION:The *28th Annual Exhibition of Artists in Michigan Prisons* (March 19 - April 2\, 2024) showcases the hard work and talents of artists incarcerated in Michigan prisons.\n\nThe work is by men and women from all 25 state prisons in both the upper and the lower peninsulas: 24 men’s prisons and 1 women’s prison.\n\nThis year there are hundreds of works in two and three dimensions\, including portraits\, tattoo imagery\, landscapes\, fantasy\, and wildlife as well as images about incarceration and visions that are entirely new.\n\nThe artwork you see at the exhibit is a testament to the resilience of artists and the life-giving power of art under the most difficult of circumstances–incarceration\, isolation\, and unimaginable loss. It is an important reminder of the connections that sustain us all\, in the free world and behind the walls.\n\nWe invite you to enjoy the work and\, if you like\, make a purchase. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Products from Pollution: Carbon Capture and Conversion
DESCRIPTION:Phasing out fossil fuels is a primary means to fight climate change\, but it alone is not enough. Even if all emissions ceased tomorrow\, atmospheric CO2 levels are already dangerously high and the climate would keep warming before it eventually stabilizes. We have to reduce or “capture” legacy CO2 to avert disaster. As the International Panel on Climate Change stated\, the *only* way we can meet our climate goal is to use carbon capture in our climate change fighting tool kit. \n\nMany of the products that we use every day are made with carbon. Treating legacy CO2 as a resource with economic value rather than a pollutant allows us to generate revenue while also fighting climate change. \n\nHowever\, not all uses or types of captured CO2 are equal in terms of environmental or economic benefits. This exhibit includes a video game that helps explain the pros and cons associated with different methods and applications of carbon capture. \n\nAdditionally\, it also provides examples of two types of carbon removal\, an interactive block activity\, and sample products made from captured CO2.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andrea Carlson Future Cache
DESCRIPTION:In Andrea Carlson Future Cache\, a 40-foot-tall memorial wall towers over visitors\, commemorating the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians who were violently burned from their land in Northern Michigan on October 15\, 1900. Written across the walls above and around the memorial\, a statement proclaims Anishinaabe rights to the land we stand on: “You are on Anishinaabe Land.”  \n \nPresented alongside are paintings of imagined decolonized landscapes and a symbolic cache of provisions. Future Cache implicitly asks those who have benefited from the legacies of colonization to consider where they stand and where to go from here and seeks to foster a sense of belonging for displaced Indigenous peoples fighting for restitution.\n\nSpecial thanks to the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians\, Margaret Noodin\, and Richard A. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Angkor Complex: ​Cultural Heritage and Post-Genocide Memory in Cambodia.
DESCRIPTION:Care in Uncertain Times\n \nAs crises of public health\, economic instability\, authoritarian regimes\, racial injustice\, and climate change spread around the globe\, millions are experiencing distress\, conflict\, uncertainty\, and vulnerability. This troubling combination of experiences is nothing new for Cambodians. Between 1975-1979\, when the Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia\, about a quarter of the country’s populations died of infectious diseases\, weapon wounds\, and malnutrition.\n \nThis exhibition brings together more than 80 works of art spanning a millennium to present how the visual culture of Cambodia and its diaspora has evolved in the face of cultural upheaval. Showcasing works from worldwide collections\, including those from some of the foremost members of the Cambodian contemporary art scene\, Angkor Complex allows viewers to encounter the still-fresh scars of a genocide and critically appreciate the strategies evolved to nurture resilience in trying times.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the U-M Office of the Provost\, U-M Office of the President\, National Endowment for the Arts\, Michigan Arts and Culture Council\, Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund\, and U-M Ross School of Business.\n

DESCRIPTION:In Curriculum / Collection\, an incredible variety of University of Michigan courses take material form. Collected for each course are objects that address the nature of materiality\, time\, and human interaction in relation to our environments\, our wars\, our relationships\, and our eccentricities. \n \nWorking in collaboration with University faculty\, the works in this exhibition were selected for their capacity to provoke engagement with the guiding questions and themes of their specific courses\, while also offering students inspiration for research and art projects in their areas of study. The exhibition demonstrates some of the diverse and creative ways art plays a central role in learning across the disciplines. It also asks us to consider what we can learn from art objects across an infinite variety of specialties and subject matter.\n \nAs classes begin in Fall of 2021\, you’ll be able to use these pages to explore the collections designed for each course\, dive into the works themselves\, and hear from the professors and students about how they are engaging with art and objects in new ways. SUMMARY:Presentation:Low rank symmetric fusion categories in positive characteristic
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we look at the classification problem for symmetric fusion categories in positive characteristic. We recall the second Adams operation on the Grothendieck ring and use its properties to obtain some classification results. In particular\, we show that the Adams operation is not the identity for any non-trivial symmetric fusion category. We also give lower bounds for the rank of a (non-super-Tannakian) symmetric fusion category in terms of the characteristic of the field. As an application of these results\, we classify all symmetric fusion categories of rank 3 and those of rank 4 with exactly two self-dual simple objects.

DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... DESCRIPTION:Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Earplugs are available from the carillonist upon request. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. DESCRIPTION:The near equality of the dark matter and baryon energy densities is a remarkable coincidence\, especially when one realizes that the baryon mass is exponentially sensitive to UV parameters in the form of dimensional transmutations. We explore a new dynamical mechanism\, where in the presence of an arbitrary number density of baryons and dark matter\, a scalar adjusts the masses of dark matter and baryons until the two energy densities are comparable. In this manner\, the coincidence is explained regardless of the microscopic identity of dark matter and how it was produced.  This new scalar causes a variety of experimental effects such as a new force and a (dark) matter density dependent proton mass.

DESCRIPTION:In this learning seminar\, we have been converting questions about face counts of polytopes into questions about the cohomology of toric varieties. In the case of toric varieties associated to a (nice enough) fan\, the cohomology is isomorphic to a combinatorial Chow ring. As their name suggests\, the generators and relations of these rings can be described directly from the combinatorics of the fan. We will describe these rings\, and give several detailed examples.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Revisiting U.S. Wage Inequality at the Bottom 50%
DESCRIPTION:I propose a model of a skill-replacing routine-biased-technological-change (SR- RBTC). In this model\, technology substitutes the usage of skill in routine tasks\, in contrast to standard RBTC models which assume technology replaces the workers themselves. The SR-RBTC model explains three key trends that are inconsistent with standard RBTC models: why specifically middle-wages declined even though routine workers are dispersed across the entire bottom half of the wage distribution\, why middle-wages stopped declining while the technological change continued\, and why there is no substantial decline in the average wage of routine workers. I derive two new testable predictions from the model: a decrease in return to skill\, and a decrease in skill level in routine occupations. I use an interactive-fixed-effect model to con- firm both predictions. Since SR-RBTC violates the ignorability assumption required by standard decomposition methods\, I introduce “skewness decomposition” to show that SR-RBTC is the main driver of bottom-half inequality trends.\n\nThis talk is presented by the Labor Economics Seminar\, sponsored in part by the Department of Economics with generous gifts given through the Abraham and Thelma Zwerdling Labor Economics Program.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Who Benefits from Retirement Saving Incentives in the U.S.? Evidence on Racial Gaps in Retirement Wealth Accumulation (co authored with Taha Choukhmane\, Jorge Colmenares\, Jonathan Rothbaum\, and Lawrence Schmidt)
DESCRIPTION:U.S. employers and the federal government devote more than 1.5% of GDP annually towards promoting Defined Contribution retirement saving. We study the distributional and lifetime impact of these savings incentives across racial groups using a new employer-employee linked data set covering millions of Americans. The average contribution rate of Black and Hispanic workers is roughly 40% lower than that of White workers. The rich and the children of the rich save more\; racial differences in own and parental incomes account for a large share of the racial contribution gaps. Tax and employer matching subsidies further amplify these saving differences by channeling more resources to those who save more. We estimate that breaking the link between contribution choices and saving subsidies\, through revenue-neutral reforms\, would significantly reduce racial gaps and intergenerational persistence in wealth.\n\nThis talk is presented by the Macroeconomics Seminar\, sponsored by the Department of Economics with generous gifts given through the Michael Beauregard Fund for Macroeconomics and the Economics Strategic Fund.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Searching for a Gravitational Wave Background with Pulsar Timing Arrays
DESCRIPTION:Pulsar timing arrays use observations of millisecond pulsars to detect nanohertz gravitational waves. The North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) Collaboration has recently released their 15-year data set containing observations of 68 millisecond pulsars. These data contain evidence for Hellings-Downs correlations\, which are characteristic of a gravitational wave background. In this talk\, I will present these results\, and discuss the spectral properties of the signal and implications for the astrophysical source. I will also discuss prospects for detecting other types of gravitational wave sources with pulsar timing arrays\, including individual supermassive binary black holes.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | Quantifying Dynamics of Plasmas Out of Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nMany plasmas are not in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE)\, and describing their evolution is a forefront research area across plasma science.  Often\, the evolution of non-LTE plasmas is interpreted using the first few fluid moments of the phase space density – density\, momentum\, bulk kinetic energy\, and internal energy.  However\, for a system not in LTE\, there are an infinite number of possible moments of the phase space density that can be important.  The evolution of higher order moments is typically not considered.  We discuss an approach to describe the evolution of all higher order moments (Phys. Rev. Lett.\, 130\, 085201\, 2023) that employs the so-called relative entropy (J. Soc. Indust. Appl. Math.\, 13\, 259\, 1965) describing all the non-LTE structure of the phase space density.  We derive an equation for its time evolution and argue its form is related to the first law of thermodynamics.  We introduce a new quantity we call the “higher order non-equilibrium terms” (HORNET) which quantifies the rate a phase space density approaches or moves away from LTE (Phys. Rev. E\, submitted). It has dimensions of power density so it can be directly compared to standard power densities. We demonstrate the results in particle-in-cell simulations of magnetic reconnection\, decaying plasma turbulence\, and Landau damping of Langmuir waves.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nPaul Cassak is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at West Virginia University.  He earned his Ph.D. at University of Maryland\, College Park\, and was a postdoctoral researcher at University of Delaware.  He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) and the American Geophysical Union (AGU)\, and was honored with a AGU Macelwane Medal.  He has served in numerous high-profile community service roles and has won college awards in research\, teaching\, and service/outreach.  He is currently the Associate Director of the WVU Center for KINetic Experimental\, Theoretical\, and Integrated Computational (KINETIC) Plasma Physics.\n\nThis is a hybrid event. This is no accident. The Roman empire was an ‘empire of cities’. In the western Mediterranean\, where there were relatively few\, the Romans planted an enormous number of new ones. The East\, on the other hand\, was already densely populated with cities. Here the ancient settlements of the Levant flourished under Roman rule\, growing steadily in size and prosperity.\n\nThese cities gradually took on a new appearance too\, as they each acquired a selection of the grand appurtenances and amenities of a Roman metropolis or model city: aqueducts\, vaulted bath buildings\, stone theaters\, covered markets\, colonnaded streets\, monumental frontal temple buildings. In recent years these cities have attracted a fair amount of attention from archaeologists and historians\; but they generally remain outside our accepted narratives of the evolving urban cultures of the Roman world.\n\nThe Jerome Thomas Spencer Lecture series revisits these long-established centers of the Roman Near East\, and the various ancient peoples who inhabited them. The lectures will seek to trace\, through the archaeology and historical sources\, the transformation of these cities\, from the late first century BCE until Late Antiquity and even into the Early Islamic period\; and to describe the ways in which there emerged—here in the monumental spaces of these Levantine communities—a range of new and distinctive kinds of ‘urbanity’.\n\nUrban development in the Roman period prompted a welter of political\, social\, and religious changes — all of which resulted in a number of different ‘regimes of urban living’\, distinctive to the region. The lectures will take us through a series of extremely varied – but recognizable – urban landscapes: the Decapolis\, the Limestone Massif and the Tetrapolis\; the settlements along the Mediterranean coast\; and places deep inland such as Palmyra in the Syrian Desert and the Hauran. But by the end of the journey\, the lectures shall have situated these cities as physical manifestations of a local or regional experiment in ‘urban self-fashioning’ — as the peoples of the region\, collectively and individually\, availed themselves of the alluring opportunities of the Roman peace.\n\nRubina Raja is a Professor of Classical Archaeology and Art at Aarhus University\, Denmark\, and Centre director of the Danish National Research Foundation’s Centre of Excellence for Urban Network Evolutions at Aarhus University\, Denmark.\n\nProfessor Raja studied classical archaeology at Oxford (M.St. and D.Phil) after undergraduate studies at the University of Copenhagen and Università di Roma\, La Sapienza\, Italy\, and has worked during her studies at the Danish Ministry of Culture. After her DPhil\, she held post-docs in Hamburg\, Germany\, and Aarhus\, Denmark. She was an associate professor at Aarhus University between 2009 and 2012\, and in 2012\, she was appointed professor with special responsibilities. In 2015\, she took up the professorial chair of Classical Art and Archaeology at Aarhus University as the first female professor in the field in Denmark ever. There\, she has also since 2015 directed the Danish National Research Foundation’s Centre of Excellence for Urban Network Evolutions. Raja has published widely on Greco-Roman portraiture\, ancient religion\, and its monuments\, urban development from the Hellenistic to the Medieval periods in the Eastern Mediterranean\, cultural heritage in conflict zones\, and legacy data. She is known for her groundbreaking work on the Syrian oasis city Palmyra and her high-impact collaborative archaeological fieldwork in Jerash and Rome. She has received numerous international research awards and honors\, including the Humboldt Foundation’s Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Prize\, Queen Margrethe IIs Rome Prize\, the Elite Research Prize\, and the Silver Medal for outstanding research in the humanities and social sciences awarded by the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters\, where she has been a member since 2015. She holds several leadership and management degrees from INSEAD\, Paris\, and Copenhagen Business School\, among other institutions. She has mentored junior and senior scholars in career development programs\, and is the author of numerous outreach features on the importance of the humanities broadly in today’s rapidly changing world – underlining in which ways Classics remain relevant in our day and age. In 2023\, she was a visiting fellow at All Souls College at her Alma Mater institution\, the University of Oxford.\n\nRaja is an experienced field archaeologist\, having headed projects in the Middle East and Italy since 2011. Her research focuses on urban and societal developments as well as networks from the Hellenistic to the medieval periods\, iconography\, and religion in Antiquity\, with a focus on the Eastern Mediterranean and Rome. She has pioneered research intersecting archaeology and natural sciences\, bringing high-definition studies of the past to the forefront.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic Geometry Seminar: On the scheme structure of arc spaces
DESCRIPTION:The arc space of an algebraic variety parametrizes formal germs of smooth curves mapping into the variety. It is an infinite dimensional scheme whose geometry can be used to analyze and control invariants of singularities. Traditionally this is done by focusing on the topological structure of arc spaces\, but recent developments suggest that its scheme structure (its singularities\, its non-reduced scheme structure) should also play an important role. For instance\, embedding dimensions and codimensions in local rings of arc spaces are related to the computation of discrepancies and to a theorem of Drinfeld\, Grinberg\, and Kazhdan (DGK) on formal neighborhood of arcs. In collaboration with C. Chiu and T. de Fernex\, we have been developing a toolbox for the study of the scheme structure of arc spaces and jet schemes. The starting point is an explicit formula for the sheaf of differentials on the arc space\, which leads to new results (a converse to the DGK theorem\, the control of arc fibers\, and a description of Nash blow-ups of jet schemes) as well as simpler and more direct proofs of some of the fundamental theorems in the literature (numerical versions of the birational transformation rule in motivic integration and the Denef-Loeser lemma\, and a new proof of the curve selection lemma for arc spaces). In this talk\, I will give an overview of the latest developments in this area.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Cobalt Photoredox Catalysts for Selective Radical Trifluoromethylations
DESCRIPTION:Direct trifluoromethylation of unactivated C–H bonds offers a powerful\, atom-economical route to CF3-containing molecules of interest in pharma and agrochemicals. Photoredox methods to generate electrophilic •CF3 are robust and powerful\, but outer-sphere methods suffer from the lack of selectivity inherent to •CF3 radicals. Organometallic approaches suggest solutions\, but metal-catalyzed trifluoromethylations are frequently challenged by the intrinsic properties of the M−CF3 intermediates. Whereas early transition metal M−CF3 bonds readily undergo α-fluoride abstraction to generate difluoromethyl carbene complexes\, M−CF3 bonds to low-valent later 3d metals are often thermodynamically robust and kinetically inert. We have developed a photoinduced method to activate thermodynamically stable Co(III)–CF3 bonds for selective arene C–H trifluoromethylations. Central to this strategy is the capacity of pincer (OCO)Co complexes to function as combined chromophores and organometallic reaction centers. Low energy visible light capture leads to intramolecular LMCT from a redox-active [OCO] pincer ligand to Co\, which destabilizes the Co–CF3 bond toward homolysis and release of a persistent •CF3 radical. The capacity of the Co(II) byproduct to catalyze H2 production permits direct arene C–H trifluoromethylation without a sacrificial or substrate-derived oxidant. This seminar will describe our recent extensions to photocatalysis and ongoing efforts to elaborate regiospecific radical substitution via intramolecular photolytic arene C–H trifluoromethylations and alkylations. Structure-property relationships will be presented\, which are guiding new ligand designs and establishing design principles for next generation base metal photocatalysis.

DESCRIPTION:Arguably\, many missing persons and missing activists in the era of the Suharto dictatorship have remained buried and silenced. However\, this brutal attitude is seemingly hidden without clear responsibilities from Suharto’s or current militarism. To question the responsibility of the Suharto regime and the Indonesian government\, this talk discusses how the selected literary texts written by Indonesian Muslimah writers\, such as Leila Chudori’s The Sea Speaks His Name (2017) and Okky Madasari’s The Years of the Voiceless (2010) challenge militarism and neocolonialism perpetuated by Suharto’s regime for 33 years (1965-1998). This discussion is essential to challenge neocolonialism and the legacy of colonialism\, which is seemingly over but perpetuated by the militarism that oppressed and silenced Indonesian people\, especially in the era of Suharto’s Orde Baru (New Era) even though Indonesia is now getting better and developed well under the Reform era\, which is a more open political-social environment and grassroots economic improvement since May 1998.\n   \n   Dr. Hasnul Insani Djohar is a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence (2023-24) at Southern Utah University and an Associate Professor of English and Head of the English Department (2019-2023) at Syarif Hidayatullah Islamic State University Jakarta. Dr. Djohar is also the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Muslim English Literature Journal. She holds a Ph.D. in English Literature (Global Muslim Literature) from the University of Exeter\, the UK. DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n‘Epigenetics’ is probably one of the most loosely defined terms in science. Most of us ‘epigeneticists’ adhere to the modern operational definition of epigenetics as ‘the study of mitotically and/or meiotically heritable changes in gene function that cannot be explained by changes in DNA sequence’\, or the back-translation of it as ‘epi’ (above\, on top of) + genetics.  As J. Greally points out\, the original definition for ‘epigenetics’ is actually cellular in nature\, which encompasses cellular reprogramming and cell type formation (‘polycreodism’). We posit that both cellular and molecular aspects are essential to understanding the origination of ovarian cancer. In this seminar I will discuss how menstrual cycle and cell states impact the histotype selection for endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer (EAOC)\, and a new single-cell RNA-seq technology to study the cellular and molecular landscape for the human Fallopian tube\, the site of origin for high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC).\n\nBio:\nDr. Shen received her B.Sc. in biology from Nanjing University and her Ph.D. in genetic\, molecular\, and cellular biology from the University of Southern California (USC) with a Provost PhD Fellowship. Dr. Shen has been part of The Cancer Genome Atlas team\, a multi-institutional effort to better understand the molecular basis of cancer through genomic analysis. She joined VAI in September 2014 as an assistant professor and\, in 2023\, was promoted to professor. She is currently an F1000 Faculty Member for Cancer Epigenetics\, and has been awarded the Liz Tilberis Award by Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance\, an NIH/NCI ESI MERIT award and an AACR Team Science Award.

DESCRIPTION:Order collaring\, the automatic conversion of default market orders into limit orders with 5% spread over prior prices\, has been utilized at Robinhood to protect retail investors from trading at unfavorable prices. In this paper\, we provide empirical evidence that this policy harms retail traders in the form of higher trading costs. Using two quasi-experiments involving Robinhood’s trading hours and the discontinuity around 5% spread\, we find that Robinhood customers have higher likelihood of paying extreme spreads over close prices. Further\, the policy is associated with extreme price movements in stocks. We estimate that the economic loss of the retail traders due to order collaring is on the order of millions of dollars per day.

DESCRIPTION:Thurston revolutionized the study of diffeomorphisms of Riemann surfaces with a myriad of tools: hyperbolic geometry\, geometric group theory\, Teichmuller theory\, and much more. One goal of this work is to see how much of his vision persists in higher dimensions. In this direction\, we will discuss a smooth analog of the Birman-Hilden theory for certain 4-manifolds\, and its applications to Nielsen realization problems. Time permitting\, we will also discuss related joint work with Seraphina Lee and Tudur Lewis on the geometry of other 4-manifold mapping class groups\, via moduli and reflection group theory.

DESCRIPTION:Sebastian and Pierre Erard were Parisian piano builders par excellence\, and their names have become synonymous with French piano manufacture. Erard pianos were also used widely across the continent\, including in German-speaking lands. This 45-minute program will explore how the Erard grand piano brings insight into Brahms’s piano textures. Dr. Marcus Collins\, an award-winning professor and cultural translator\, will lead the interview. Collins serves as a marketing professor at Michigan Ross and the Chief Strategy Officer at Wieden+Kennedy New York.\n\nIn this insightful dialogue\, Deno and Collins will delve into the significance of building strong organizational cultures that inspire confidence and drive action. DESCRIPTION:New regulations for drinking water are on the way! For the first time\, the EPA has proposed federal limits on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). PFAS include a large class of chemicals found in cleaning products\, nonstick cookware\, firefighting chemicals\, and food packaging\, among other materials. PFAS contaminate many drinking water sources throughout the US. \n\nWe'll discuss current research on the health impacts of PFAS and learn what the new regulations say. What difference will they make? Our speakers include Ann Arbor Drinking Water Quality Manager Becky Lahr\, as well as Justin Colacino and Jackie Goodrich of the U-M's School of Public Health.\n\nScience Cafés provide an opportunity for audiences to discuss current research topics with experts in an informal setting. \n\nHors d’oeuvres at 5:30 p.m.\nThe program begins at 6:00 p.m.\nSeating is limited—come early. \n\n*UMMNH would like to thank Conor O’Neill’s for 15 years of support for our Science Cafés. Born in Kırşehir\, Turkey\, she emigrated to Germany with her family at the age of 3\; she is currently based in Berlin\, Stuttgart\, and Istanbul. Ekici holds a Master's in Art Education from the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich and a Master's in Performance Art from the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste\, Braunschweig. As a self-described artistic nomad\, her works are inspired by cultural traditions\, identities\, religions\, histories of art\, and architectures from around the world.
