Modernist Glass from the Polish Past DESCRIPTION:The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass)\, the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. Camera as Passport: The Ship of Photographers DESCRIPTION:Starting in 1933 when Hitler and the Nazis came to power\, a cadre of European Jews—German\, Polish\, Hungarian\, Austrian\, French—discovered that a camera could be their passport\, first out of Germany and then out of Europe. Some of these women and men had been planning one type of career—lawyer\, journalist\, painter\, musician—but then realized that they needed to find another way to earn a living. Taking photographs presented a sufficiently malleable opportunity that not only allowed them to leave Germany and then Europe but also to have a means to sustain themselves in foreign countries where they did not necessarily speak the language.\n \n They did\, however\, mobilize the visual language of photography. For a number of these figures\, forced migration became an asset during the golden age of photojournalism wherein their portable services were employed to supply picture stories on the move and around the world. Many of these Jews became influential photographers\, shaping how their contemporaries saw the world. Looking back on their work\, we can see how they have influenced our understanding of the modern world even as we can recognize their photographs as a significant component of modern Jewish visual culture.\n \n Of the dozens of photographers who fled Europe\, eight escaped on a single ship. The S. S. Winnipeg sailed from Marseille\, France on May 7\, 1941. Germany had already conquered both eastern and western Europe and was poised to invade the Soviet Union. The United States was not yet in the war. Among the 750 refugees aboard were photographers from Hungary\, Belgium\, France\, and Germany: Ilse Bing\, Josef Breitenbach\, Boris Lipnitsky\, Charles Leirens\, Yolla Niclas\, Fred Stein\, Monie Tannen\, and Ylla (Camilla Henriette Koffler). During lifeboat drills\, they discovered each other. Some of them narrowly escaped Vichy France under the auspices of the American journalist Varian Fry and the New York-based Emergency Rescue Committee that helped so many Jewish and anti-Fascist artists get out of Europe in the nick of time.\n \n This exhibit introduces the University of Michigan to this intrepid group as exemplary case studies of the wide range of European photographers who used their cameras as passports to other worlds. It focuses first on their European experiences pre-emigration before turning to their escape from Europe on the S. S. Winnipeg (with three of them taking photos on board the ship). Central to her practice is the collection\, documentation\, and observation of seasonal change and ephemera in both natural and artificial environments. Her work is realized in several formats\, including installation\, video\, prints\, and drawings\, as well as projects that engage communities to look at local and global environments.\n\nCampbell earned an MFA in printmaking from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her work has been exhibited internationally in Belgium\, Germany\, Switzerland\, and Slovenia and nationally throughout the US\, including the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, Queens Art Museum\, Crystal Bridges Museum\, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit\, Grand Rapids Art Museum\, the Detroit Institute of Arts\, The Drawing Center\, and The International Print Center New York. In 2009 she was one of 18 artists selected for the inaugural Kresge Artist Fellowship.\n\nCampbell has been awarded residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts\, the Flemish Center for Graphic Arts\, the Jentel Foundation\, Beisinghoff Print Residency\, and the Print Research Institute of North Texas. In \"Realm\,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto’s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he\, a queer immigrant\, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials\, images\, and texts from \"Marília\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Even if all emissions ceased tomorrow\, atmospheric CO2 levels are already dangerously high and the climate would keep warming before it eventually stabilizes. We have to reduce or “capture” legacy CO2 to avert disaster. As the International Panel on Climate Change stated\, the *only* way we can meet our climate goal is to use carbon capture in our climate change fighting tool kit. \n\nMany of the products that we use every day are made with carbon. Treating legacy CO2 as a resource with economic value rather than a pollutant allows us to generate revenue while also fighting climate change. \n\nHowever\, not all uses or types of captured CO2 are equal in terms of environmental or economic benefits. A Zoom option is also provided.\n\nSeminar Description:\n\nDespite the development of increasingly capable quantum computers\, an experimental demonstration of an algorithmic quantum speedup employing today's non-fault-tolerant devices has remained elusive. In this talk\, I will report on three very recent demonstrations of such a speedup\, focusing on how solution times scale with problem size. Two of the demonstrations use IBM’s superconducting quantum computers and involve modified versions of foundational black-box quantum algorithms. In contrast with recent quantum supremacy demonstrations\, these quantum speedups do not rely on complexity-theoretic conjectures. The third demonstration uses a D-Wave quantum annealer and involves approximate optimization in the context of spin glass problems. In all cases\, our work incorporates tailored quantum error suppression methods\, which we found to be necessary in order for the quantum speedup to appear. Her current research focuses on public opinion and foreign policies\, with a particular emphasis on Japanese public opinion regarding nuclear weapons. She also studies the roles of international organizations in facilitating international cooperation. She explores these topics using survey experiments. However\, it has been shown that even in controlled laboratory environments\, exoskeletons may experience errors of improper torque assistance due to misalignments between the measured and actual state of the human-exoskeleton system. In order for exoskeletons to be adopted for everyday use\, it is important to understand the immediate and long-term effects of exoskeleton errors on user motion and trust in the system\, as errors are likely to occur in operational settings with complex\, changing environments. \n\nThe main aims of this thesis are to characterize the (1) immediate effects and (2) residual effects of exoskeleton errors on human gait strategies\, as well as (3) develop a co-adaptive exoskeleton controller to support collaboration between the user and exoskeleton. In this thesis\, we identified and characterized the immediate compensatory behavior and emergent gait strategies developed as users walked imperfect exoskeleton algorithms with fixed error frequencies. We developed quantitative measures of human-exoskeleton fluency---the alignment of the user and exoskeleton's goals---using joint kinematics and muscle activity metrics. We then designed and modeled a co-adaptive control algorithm that supports human-exoskeleton fluency by adjusting torque assistance in response to measures of muscle activity and joint kinematics along the lower limbs. Does it predispose an individual to disease? Does it help bacteria resist drugs? But that’s not the whole story. Every mutation has an impact at the molecular level\, for example\, by changing the level of a transcript or the fold of a protein. These effects fan out to influence other phenotypes\, ultimately causing changes at the level of cells and organisms. The Geiler-Samerotte lab focuses on this wider view by tracing the impact of mutations through what we call the genotype-phenotype-phenotype-phenotype map. To study this map\, we merge high-throughput experiments in yeast with computational and mathematical approaches. We observe how the impacts of mutations change in similar ways across contexts\, and use similarities to build predictive models. Launched in December 2021\, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) promises a breakthrough in our understanding of exo-systems. Its Mid-IR Instrument MIRI enables the first direct observations at mid-infrared wavelengths with unprecedented sensitivity. Before JWST was operational\, direct imaging of exoplanets was limited to near-infrared wavelengths using ground-based instruments\, yet it remains the sole method for directly studying the atmospheres of young giant exoplanets at long period. This population of exoplanets plays a crucial role in constraining our understanding of planetary formation and evolution.\nIn this presentation\, I will introduce the challenges and interests of JWST/MIRI observations for directly imaged planets. I will present results from the Exo-MIRI GTO program\, among the first observations of exosystems at various wavelengths in the mid-infrared. These observations reveal unexpected features and allows studying exoplanetary atmosphere\, providing new constraints on planetary formations. As a conclusion\, MIRI cast a new vision of known exoplanetary systems and opens a new field of investigation to characterize young exoplanetary systems. This paper analyzes Nahuatl-language (Aztec) alphabetic writings and images produced by Nahua artists to shed light on indigenous memories of iconoclasm and violence in colonial Mexico. Special attention will be paid to understanding the significance of ritual objects\, elite regalia\, and sacred sites\, and the impact that their destruction had on Nahua collective memory. This paper argues that Nahuas associated the destruction of their material culture with violence against native bodies and psychological trauma.\n\nLisa Sousa is a professor of history at Occidental College in Los Angeles who specializes in colonial Latin America\, indigenous peoples of Mexico\, and women\, gender and sexuality. DESCRIPTION:Between 1830 and 1962\, six million Africans living under colonial rule served in the French army. Most were deployed internationally to maintain order or fight French wars. After independence\, all were repatriated and granted the right to move to France. We estimate the effect of military deployment on the soldiers' long-term outcomes\, as well as on their communities of origin\, using historical data on Moroccan soldiers\, and exploiting the arbitrary assignment of troops to international locations. We show that\, within a municipality\, cohorts with a higher share of soldiers deployed to France were more likely to relocate there after independence. In contrast\, deployment to other locations did not affect emigration. Consistent with the establishment of emigration networks\, we find that the effects persist for decades after independence. Furthermore\, communities with a higher share of soldiers deployed to France have experienced better economic outcomes and a shift from the agricultural to the service sector today. We show that tQGT describes the zero point motion of bound electrons and acts as a generating function for generalized sum rules of electronic conductivity. Therefore\, tQGT enables a systematic and basis- independent framework to compute the instantaneous response of insulators\, including optical mass\, orbital angular momentum\, and the dielectric constant in low-energy effective theories. It allows for a consistent approximation across these quantities upon restricting the number of occupied and unoccupied states in an effective low-energy description of an infinite quantum system. We outline how quantum geometry can be generated in periodic systems by lattice interference and examine spectral weight transfer from small frequencies to high frequencies by creating geometrically frustrated flat bands. The 2020 Election\, Trump’s Insurrection\, and the Strength of America’s Political Institutions DESCRIPTION:Did Trump and his MAGAites inflict damage on American political institutions via election denialism and the assault on the U.S. Capitol? While most pundits and many scholars find this a question easy to answer in the affirmative\, to date\, little rigorous evidence has been adduced on Trump’s institutional consequences. Based on surveys of representative samples of the American people in July 2020\, December 2020\, March 2021\, and June 2021\, Gibson’s analysis examines in great detail whether American political institutions lost legitimacy over the period from before the presidential election to well after it\, and whether any such loss is associated with acceptance of the “Big Lie” about the election and its aftermath. His highly contrarian conclusion is simple: try as they might (and did)\, Trump and his Republicans did not in fact succeed in undermining American national political institutions. The empirical evidence indicates that institutions seem to be more resilient than many have imagined\, just as Legitimacy Theory would predict.\n\nJames L. Gibson is the Sidney W. And how he is trying to control the telling of history in Russia. Starting last fall\, all high school students in Russia are required to study history using a textbook written by Putin’s former minister of culture (and his ghostwriter)\, Vladimir Medinsky. This propaganda is reminiscent of the textbook described in Orwell’s \"1984.\"\n \n Meanwhile\, Zygar published a book titled \"War and Punishment\" (2023) about an alternative\, anti-imperialist Russian historical narrative. Unlike Putin’s textbook\, Zygar’s book has no chance to be published in Russia. And it is no wonder why. Zygar debunks all the myths Putin’s history textbook promotes\, and all the myths Putin uses to justify the war in Ukraine.\n \n Mikhail Zygar is a Russian-born author\, political journalist\, and historian. Currently\, he is the inaugural Press Freedom Fellow at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York (CUNY) and Visiting Lecturer at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs.\n \n He was the founding editor-in-chief (2010-2015) of \"Dozhd\,\" Russia's only independent TV news channel.
