Modernist Glass from the Polish Past DESCRIPTION:The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass)\, the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. Camera as Passport: The Ship of Photographers DESCRIPTION:Starting in 1933 when Hitler and the Nazis came to power\, a cadre of European Jews—German\, Polish\, Hungarian\, Austrian\, French—discovered that a camera could be their passport\, first out of Germany and then out of Europe. Some of these women and men had been planning one type of career—lawyer\, journalist\, painter\, musician—but then realized that they needed to find another way to earn a living. Taking photographs presented a sufficiently malleable opportunity that not only allowed them to leave Germany and then Europe but also to have a means to sustain themselves in foreign countries where they did not necessarily speak the language.\n \n They did\, however\, mobilize the visual language of photography. For a number of these figures\, forced migration became an asset during the golden age of photojournalism wherein their portable services were employed to supply picture stories on the move and around the world. Many of these Jews became influential photographers\, shaping how their contemporaries saw the world. Looking back on their work\, we can see how they have influenced our understanding of the modern world even as we can recognize their photographs as a significant component of modern Jewish visual culture.\n \n Of the dozens of photographers who fled Europe\, eight escaped on a single ship. The S. S. Winnipeg sailed from Marseille\, France on May 7\, 1941. Germany had already conquered both eastern and western Europe and was poised to invade the Soviet Union. The United States was not yet in the war. Among the 750 refugees aboard were photographers from Hungary\, Belgium\, France\, and Germany: Ilse Bing\, Josef Breitenbach\, Boris Lipnitsky\, Charles Leirens\, Yolla Niclas\, Fred Stein\, Monie Tannen\, and Ylla (Camilla Henriette Koffler). During lifeboat drills\, they discovered each other. Some of them narrowly escaped Vichy France under the auspices of the American journalist Varian Fry and the New York-based Emergency Rescue Committee that helped so many Jewish and anti-Fascist artists get out of Europe in the nick of time.\n \n This exhibit introduces the University of Michigan to this intrepid group as exemplary case studies of the wide range of European photographers who used their cameras as passports to other worlds. It focuses first on their European experiences pre-emigration before turning to their escape from Europe on the S. S. Winnipeg (with three of them taking photos on board the ship). It considers the process of germination as a site for the cross-pollination of ideas from diverse disciplines around the future of the built environment. \n\nAbout the artist:\nSusan Goethel Campbell creates multi-disciplinary work that considers the contemporary landscape to be an emergent system where nature\, culture\, and the engineered environment are indistinguishable from one another. Central to her practice is the collection\, documentation\, and observation of seasonal change and ephemera in both natural and artificial environments. Her work is realized in several formats\, including installation\, video\, prints\, and drawings\, as well as projects that engage communities to look at local and global environments.\n\nCampbell earned an MFA in printmaking from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her work has been exhibited internationally in Belgium\, Germany\, Switzerland\, and Slovenia and nationally throughout the US\, including the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, Queens Art Museum\, Crystal Bridges Museum\, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit\, Grand Rapids Art Museum\, the Detroit Institute of Arts\, The Drawing Center\, and The International Print Center New York. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States\,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \n\nUsing autoethnography\, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Marília\,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead\,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas\, gender states\, and his life experience—a story of the struggles\, fears\, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm\,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto’s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he\, a queer immigrant\, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials\, images\, and texts from \"Marília\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Candid and relaxed more than posed\, they are similar to most people's pictures in old family albums.\n\nCulled from the Orson Welles-Beatrice Welles materials that are part of the Mavericks & Makers collection within the U-M Library’s Special Collections Research Center\, each photo or letter tells a story of a connection Welles held dearly. The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s\, when Welles was a teenager\, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s\, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife\, Paola Mori. \n\nIt should be noted that Welles’s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages\, including the Welles-Feder Collection and the Wilson-Welles Collection. The HIV care cascade is a conceptual model describing key milestones in successful delivery of care and treatment for people living with HIV. These include diagnosis of HIV\, linkage and retention in care\, initiation of antiretroviral therapy\, and suppression of viral load. Many care programs\, such as AMPATH in western Kenya\, have implemented electronic health records with point-of-care interface for visualizing patient records and entering data in real time. This has improved the ability of care providers to track outcomes and\, where necessary\, intervene to improve them.\nIn this talk we describe development and implementation of a Bayesian decision support module geared toward maximizing retention in care – a critically important component of the cascade. The goal of the project is to identify in advance those patients at high risk for missed visit\, interruption in treatment\, and loss to follow up. The project involves building and validating predictive models derived from an electronic health record system\, embedding the models in the EHR back end to generate real-time predictions of missing a scheduled visit\, and using the predictions to activate pre-visit outreach by clinic staff. Our model addresses several idiosyncrasies in the data\, such as competing risks\, discontinuous hazard functions\, and missing predictors. We describe how to use the posterior predictive distribution to generate various types of insights\, such as flagging patient-level features that explain risk classification and identifying optimal timing for the next appointment. We also show the implementation of the model at the point of care and describe our plans for evaluating the impact of the decision support process.\n\nThis is joint work with Arman Oganisian and Nick Lewis at Brown University\, and Ann Mwangi at Moi University in Eldoret\, Kenya. Upon modeling participants’ choice of order price and order type\, I identify their latent value distributions from observed orders and trades. The model flexibly allows for dynamics\, risk aversion\, and default behavior. Counterfactual simulations suggest the observed exchange attains substantially lower trade surplus than the benchmark of periodic uniform-price market clearing. Droughts exacerbate the gap in surplus per unit traded between the observed exchange and the benchmark. Even if all emissions ceased tomorrow\, atmospheric CO2 levels are already dangerously high and the climate would keep warming before it eventually stabilizes. We have to reduce or “capture” legacy CO2 to avert disaster. As the International Panel on Climate Change stated\, the *only* way we can meet our climate goal is to use carbon capture in our climate change fighting tool kit. \n\nMany of the products that we use every day are made with carbon. Treating legacy CO2 as a resource with economic value rather than a pollutant allows us to generate revenue while also fighting climate change. \n\nHowever\, not all uses or types of captured CO2 are equal in terms of environmental or economic benefits. This exhibit includes a video game that helps explain the pros and cons associated with different methods and applications of carbon capture. \n\nAdditionally\, it also provides examples of two types of carbon removal\, an interactive block activity\, and sample products made from captured CO2. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By integrating Islamic studies frameworks with anthropological research and gender studies\, my presentation challenges the conventional concentration on male-dominated institutions\, highlighting the grassroots level practice of issuing fatwas\, particularly by women.\n \n She contends that fatwa-issuing institutions exhibit gendered structures that marginalize women from significant roles and recognition as Islamic scholars. Consequently\, an exploration of women's fatwa-making necessitates an examination of various interaction sites between female muftis and those seeking fatwas. These interactions unveil dynamic shifts in women's experiences\, religious authority\, and everyday fatwa-making practices influenced by context-specific resources. The active participation of women disrupts traditional norms\, challenging gendered structures within fatwa-making institutions.\n \n Additionally\, it signifies the evolution of doctrinal changes and ethical practices\, transforming fatwas from static outcomes into a dynamic and inclusive realm of interaction\, innovation\, and Islamic authority. The presentation argues that the success observed in Indonesia holds paramount importance for a comprehensive understanding of Muslim women's experiences in contemporary Muslim society. To achieve a holistic perspective\, the study recommends shifting the focus away from the Middle East and expanding research to encompass Muslims in other regions\, particularly Southeast Asia\, where the most populous Muslim country is situated. This shift is envisioned to offer a well-rounded depiction of the diverse experiences of Muslim women beyond the conventional geographical center of Islam.\n \n Nor Ismah is Deputy Director of the Institute of Southeast Asian Islam at Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University in Indonesia. She holds a Master’s degree in Southeast Asian Studies from the School of Pacific and Asian Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa\, completing her studies in 2012 with the support of the Ford Foundation International Fellowship Program. From 2016 to 2023\, she pursued her PhD studies at the Leiden University Institute for Area Studies (LIAS)\, sponsored by the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education under the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia. As a young curator specializing in Roman art at the Kelsey Museum\, Professor Gazda was given the task of publishing the statuette. In her article\, which appeared in 1981 alongside the excavation reports\, she dated the statuette to the late antique period based on its style\, archaeological findspot\, and cultural context in Carthage of the period of St. Augustine. \n\nAlthough her conclusion was surprising at the time\, since then\, the Ganymede has appeared regularly in scholarship on late antique art. Then\, in 2013\, the statuette was stolen from the museum that U-M’s team had built at the archeological site and where the Ganymede had served as the centerpiece. Thanks to Interpol\, the statuette was recovered in 2017. Now\, after 40-plus years\, Professor Gazda is working on another article in which she assesses the influence of the Carthage Ganymede on the field of late antique art history and presents an object biography of the changing meaning and value of the statuette from antiquity to the present day. The exhibition will take place in various locations\, including a shipping container - the XR/XF pod - that will travel between 2 locations in Ann Arbor during the first two weeks of April.\n\nThe city of Ann Arbor has always been feminized. The story goes that in 1824\, John Allen and Elisha W. Rumsey founded the town and named it after their wives\, who were both named Ann. Since then\, the city has been anthropomorphized as a feminine body throughout the years. In the 1980s\, the University of Michigan’s football rivals in Ohio invented the infamous slogan\, “Ann Arbor is a Whore!” as a method to jeer at the opposition. Since then\, this offensive slogan has spread across the US and reappears every Fall during football season in Ann Arbor\, proliferating through both physical and digital objects. As one recent social media commenter notes: “That's what happens when you have a chick name for your city.”\n\nWith this project\, we strike/suspend gender from the city’s name: Ann Arbor is neither trophy wife nor whore. Instead\, we pose Ann Arbor as a feminist cyborg\, a feminist map\, and a creative\, participatory organism. We construct the body of the city differently\, with artistic intervention and cyberfeminist means: physical and digital installation\, activations of public space\, music\, performances\, and workshops. From the Bell Tower on central campus to the parking lot of the Liberty Annex\, we offer a creative activation that is both physical and digital and a fluid/complex/distributed image of the city through both XR and feminist means.\n\nCurated by Alina Nazmeeva and Yvette Granata. We investigate what these features imply in the context of a repeated strategic interaction. First\, we show that opportunities for intertemporal trade may expand the set of feasible payoffs relative to that in a static interaction. Two distinct sources for such trade are identified: endogenous heterogeneity in the players’ rates of time preference and a hedging motive pertaining to the intertemporal distribution of risk. The set of equilibrium payoffs may on the other hand shrink drastically as many efficient outcomes become unsustainable no matter the level of patience. This “antifolk” result occurs when the players prefer stage outcomes to be positively correlated rather than independent across time. Intuitively\, such preferences make it inefficient to offset short-term losses with future gains\, while this is needed to ensure that security levels are met on path. Most coarse-grained (i.e. two fluid) models only solve for one-point moments\, limiting reproduction of important two-phase flow statistics. In this talk\, we present set of equations describing the evolution of these flows that include fluctuating components of filtered fields --- a description of the level of clustering present in these flows. For dilute heavy particles settling in homogeneous isotropic turbulence\, the averaged filtered drag and filtered Reynolds-stress like term that dictates enhanced settling is correlated to this description of volume fraction fluctuation. A data-driven approach that efficiently traverses parameter space in direct numerical simulations to inform closures is proposed\, providing both descriptive insights and directions for future modeling. Further\, a numerical crossflow experiment is proposed\, yielding several advantages over traditional forced homogeneous isotropic turbulence for the study of turbulent particle-laden flows. Rising surface temperatures likewise guarantee new conditions of drought and flood\, exacerbated by a slowing jet stream that will tend to stall weather systems in unpredictable ways. Our changing cryospheres and hydrospheres promise misery to millions across the planet. But they also reveal forms of material connectivity that could potentially be mobilized in the struggle against climate change and the petroculture that produced it. In this presentation\, we juxtapose Cymene Howe’s elemental ethnography of the transformation of ice into water in the Arctic with Dominic Boyer’s research on how Houstonians are seeking to adapt to the increasing presence of stormwater in their lives. We discuss a concept we call “hydrological globalization” to highlight the elemental connections and cultural impacts that follow from the redistribution of water across the planet. We also highlight how hydrological precarity creates new possibilities for alliances across the world built out of shared Anthropocene experiences like droughts\, fires and flooding.\"\n\nDominic Boyer is an anthropologist\, media maker and environmental researcher who teaches at Rice University where he served as Founding Director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Research in the Human Sciences (2013-2019). He recently published Energopolitics (Duke UP\, 2019)\, which analyzes the politics of wind power development in Southern Mexico and Hyposubjects (Open Humanities Press\, 2021)\, an experimental collaboration with Timothy Morton concerning politics in the Anthropocene. With Cymene Howe\, he made a documentary film about Iceland’s first major glacier (Okjökull) lost to climate change\, Not Ok: a little movie about a small glacier at the end of the world (2018). In August 2019\, together with Icelandic collaborators they installed a memorial to Okjökull’s passing\, an event that attracted media attention from around the world and which caused The Economist to create their first-ever obituary for a non-human. During 2021-22 he held an artist residency at The Factory in Djúpavík\, Iceland\, and was a Berggruen Institute Fellow in Los Angeles working on a project on “Electric Futures.” His most recent book is titled No More Fossils (U Minnesota Press\, 2023) a discussion of fossil fuel fossils and what is to be done about them.\n\nCymene Howe is Professor of Anthropology and Founding Co-Director of the Science and Technology Studies Program at Rice University. It depends on who you ask.
