SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Modernist Glass from the Polish Past
DESCRIPTION:The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass)\, the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. We are grateful to them for making this remarkable exhibit possible at CCPS and WCEE.\n\nOrganized by the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies\, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design and Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia.\n\nLearn more about the exhibition and the artists at https://myumi.ch/8eVrM\n\nThe exhibit opens on September 15\, 2023 in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact copernicus@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:CES Exhibition. Camera as Passport: The Ship of Photographers
DESCRIPTION:Starting in 1933 when Hitler and the Nazis came to power\, a cadre of European Jews—German\, Polish\, Hungarian\, Austrian\, French—discovered that a camera could be their passport\, first out of Germany and then out of Europe. Some of these women and men had been planning one type of career—lawyer\, journalist\, painter\, musician—but then realized that they needed to find another way to earn a living. Taking photographs presented a sufficiently malleable opportunity that not only allowed them to leave Germany and then Europe but also to have a means to sustain themselves in foreign countries where they did not necessarily speak the language.\n \n They did\, however\, mobilize the visual language of photography. For a number of these figures\, forced migration became an asset during the golden age of photojournalism wherein their portable services were employed to supply picture stories on the move and around the world. Many of these Jews became influential photographers\, shaping how their contemporaries saw the world. Looking back on their work\, we can see how they have influenced our understanding of the modern world even as we can recognize their photographs as a significant component of modern Jewish visual culture.\n \n Of the dozens of photographers who fled Europe\, eight escaped on a single ship. The S. S. Winnipeg sailed from Marseille\, France on May 7\, 1941. Germany had already conquered both eastern and western Europe and was poised to invade the Soviet Union. The United States was not yet in the war. Among the 750 refugees aboard were photographers from Hungary\, Belgium\, France\, and Germany: Ilse Bing\, Josef Breitenbach\, Boris Lipnitsky\, Charles Leirens\, Yolla Niclas\, Fred Stein\, Monie Tannen\, and Ylla (Camilla Henriette Koffler). During lifeboat drills\, they discovered each other. Some of them narrowly escaped Vichy France under the auspices of the American journalist Varian Fry and the New York-based Emergency Rescue Committee that helped so many Jewish and anti-Fascist artists get out of Europe in the nick of time.\n \n This exhibit introduces the University of Michigan to this intrepid group as exemplary case studies of the wide range of European photographers who used their cameras as passports to other worlds. It focuses first on their European experiences pre-emigration before turning to their escape from Europe on the S. S. Winnipeg (with three of them taking photos on board the ship). The exhibit concludes with examples of some of their initial photographic reactions to the new world\, seeing it through European eyes.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Propositions to Progress: A Working Atlas of the Global South
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, maps have served as a panoptic technology\, assisting imperial powers in governance\, discipline\, and control. In this exhibit\, internationally renowned Filipino artist Cian Dayrit acts as a counter-cartographer\, reclaiming mapmaking as an emancipatory activity.\n\nDayrit’s artworks\, embroidered on textiles or painted over collages of colonial-era maps\, plot the extraction of natural resources\, land grabbing\, and dispossession and displacement in his native Philippines. At the same time\, their resistant lines summon new imaginaries out of the overlaps between places and memories.\n\nDayrit’s practice is critically and practically informed by the narratives of Filipino communities. Items exhibited alongside his artwork are the result of map-drawing workshops the artist has convened with rural\, urban\, and indigenous communities across the Philippines. Propositions to Progress invites you to engage in the collaborative endeavor to activate alternative territories from the ground up.\n\nCian Dayrit is an interdisciplinary artist exploring colonialism and ethnography\, archaeology\, history\, and mythology. Dayrit subverts the language of the state\, museum\, and military to visualize the contradictions on which these institutions are built. He studied at the University of the Philippines.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Souq Stories: Gaza Lives
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit is an extension of Souq Stories (https://souqstories.insaniyyat.org/)\, which was displayed in 2021 in all seven of the historic markets it depicts in Gaza\, Nazareth\, Acre\, Nablus\, Jerusalem\, Khalil\, and Jaffa. Its youth group organizers aimed to bolster Palestinian unity across the systemic barriers — colonial divides\, military checkpoints\, walls\, etc. — that fragment the lives of people living in Palestine. \n\nSouq Stories: Gaza Lives brings us to present-day Gaza\, sharing the stories of\, and images captured by\, young journalists and photographers who have continued to document the realities of life in Palestine. It also honors one among them\, Fouad Abu Khammash\, who was killed in January 2024 in an Israeli bomb attack on Gaza.\n\n< The exhibit includes images of people suffering the aftermath of the ongoing violence. >\n\nThis exhibit was curated by Souq Stories team members Shareef Sarhan and Waed Abbas in partnership with U-M students Amir Marshi\, Zainab Hakim\, Mariam Odeh\, and Vivian M. Nguyen. It’s offered in conjunction with this year’s Palestine Awareness Week\, an annual series of educational events related to Palestinian history\, culture\, and politics. Presented in association with Insaniyyat: Society of Palestinian Anthropologists.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Caswell Diabetes Institute Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:\"Regulating the master switch of adipogenesis\"\n\nSusanne Mandrup\, PhD\nProfessor\, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology\,\nUniversity of Southern Denmark\,\nDirector of the Center of Excellence in Functional Genomics and Tissue Plasticity and Center for Adipocyte Signaling\,\nChair of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology\, \nDanish Institute of Advanced Study\n\nAdipocytes develop from fibroblastic progenitor cells in the perivascular niche. Using cellular in vitro model systems\, we and others have shown that this differentiation is driven by a first wave of transcription factors that induce major chromatin remodeling as well as the expression of the second wave of adipogenic transcription factors that activates the adipocyte gene program. The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) is the main driver of the second wave and has been shown to be an obligate master regulator of adipogenesis in vitro as well as in vivo. The molecular mechanisms underlying this powerful role of PPARγ are currently not well understood\; however\, studies in our group indicate that unique chromatin remodeling properties of PPARγ plays a role. Furthermore\, our recent work shows that the PPARG locus is associated with a highly interconnected enhancer community that may allow its transcription to be dramatically induced during differentiation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exile and the Mentor-student Relationship: A Force for Resistance and Decolonization
DESCRIPTION:This small exhibit features work in reproduction by Iraqi artists Hanaa Malallah and Mohammed Karim\, as well as an original painting by Karim. Both Malallah and Karim were significantly influenced by their mentors during and after their training in Iraq\, and continue to share their work and ideas with a new generation today.\n\nIn the United States\, Iraq is typically spoken about in a passive position: colonized\, under despotic rule\, occupied. Post-occupied. Through connections between mentors and students\, and students who became mentors to new students\, Iraqi artists have been a force for anti-colonialism\, claiming their heritage and its future for themselves.\n\nView the exhibit Monday-Friday in the Fine Arts Library\, Tappan Hall\, 855 S. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Garden Repairs
DESCRIPTION:About the installation:\nGarden Repairs is an installation of paper textiles that loosely narrate the life cycle of plants. It considers the process of germination as a site for the cross-pollination of ideas from diverse disciplines around the future of the built environment. \n\nAbout the artist:\nSusan Goethel Campbell creates multi-disciplinary work that considers the contemporary landscape to be an emergent system where nature\, culture\, and the engineered environment are indistinguishable from one another. Central to her practice is the collection\, documentation\, and observation of seasonal change and ephemera in both natural and artificial environments. Her work is realized in several formats\, including installation\, video\, prints\, and drawings\, as well as projects that engage communities to look at local and global environments.\n\nCampbell earned an MFA in printmaking from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her work has been exhibited internationally in Belgium\, Germany\, Switzerland\, and Slovenia and nationally throughout the US\, including the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, Queens Art Museum\, Crystal Bridges Museum\, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit\, Grand Rapids Art Museum\, the Detroit Institute of Arts\, The Drawing Center\, and The International Print Center New York. In 2009 she was one of 18 artists selected for the inaugural Kresge Artist Fellowship.\n\nCampbell has been awarded residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts\, the Flemish Center for Graphic Arts\, the Jentel Foundation\, Beisinghoff Print Residency\, and the Print Research Institute of North Texas. She taught studio art for 15 years at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit and has been a visiting artist in numerous institutions in the United States and abroad. Her work is in the collection of the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, New York Public Library\, Detroit Institute of Arts\, Toledo Museum of Art\, and the University of Michigan Special Collections Library.\n\nThis project is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities' multi-year High Stakes Art initiative.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:My Gender States
DESCRIPTION:On display at Lane Hall\, Rogério M. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States\,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \n\nUsing autoethnography\, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Marília\,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead\,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas\, gender states\, and his life experience—a story of the struggles\, fears\, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm\,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto’s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he\, a queer immigrant\, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials\, images\, and texts from \"Marília\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Collected are portrayals of Pinto’s gender states\, gender confusion\, gender embodiments\, gender doubt\, and reactions to gender stigma. \n\nRogério M. Pinto (Brazilian\, American\, b. 1965\, Belo Horizonte\, Brazil) is a University Diversity Social Transformation Professor\; Berit Ingersoll-Dayton Collegiate Professor of Social Work\; and Professor of Theatre and Drama\, School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, at the University of Michigan. Pinto uses art-based methods to conduct community-engaged research in the United States and Brazil.\n\nThe photographs used in \"My Gender States\" are by Emerson Granillo (American\, b. 1987)\; David Newton (American\, b. 1993)\; and Nicholas Williams (American\, b. 1994). SUMMARY:Exhibition:Orson Welles as Family Man: Son\, Husband\, Father
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit provides a unique glimpse into the actor/director Orson Welles’ private life. Unlike previous U-M Library exhibits that focused on the artist at work\, this display shows him in informal and familial environments\, revealing a depth and complexity of character that are often overshadowed by his fame and professional achievements. The photographs and documents displayed showcase a variety of emotional tones — warmth\, humor\, tenderness\, and passion. Candid and relaxed more than posed\, they are similar to most people's pictures in old family albums.\n\nCulled from the Orson Welles-Beatrice Welles materials that are part of the Mavericks & Makers collection within the U-M Library’s Special Collections Research Center\, each photo or letter tells a story of a connection Welles held dearly. The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s\, when Welles was a teenager\, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s\, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife\, Paola Mori. \n\nIt should be noted that Welles’s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages\, including the Welles-Feder Collection and the Wilson-Welles Collection. The items on display here were saved by his third and final child\, Beatrice Welles\, and reflect her childhood memories of her parents.\n\nThe exhibit is available during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://umlib.us/hatchergalleryexhibits).

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Peter Dunn Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Peter Dunn has historically been an object maker as a designer and sculptor. Whether designing furniture or developing the ideas for sculpture\, the process has always been the same. Ideas begin as\nscribbled images that are then stretched and refined with CAD software. At its core\, much of the work studies the manipulation of simple geometry. Dunn looks at the form from different forced perspectives – exploding\, augmenting\, slicing\, repeating\, and lighting. This body of work is a study of perception\, sympathy\, hierarchy\, and reality. The “We Are Virus” series is an adaptation from an initial design where it continued to evolve and adapt through manipulation of parts and scale.\n\nPeter Dunn received his BFA from Wayne State University and MFA from University of Michigan. He currently serves on faculty at College for Creative Studies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andrea Carlson Future Cache
DESCRIPTION:In Andrea Carlson Future Cache\, a 40-foot-tall memorial wall towers over visitors\, commemorating the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians who were violently burned from their land in Northern Michigan on October 15\, 1900. Written across the walls above and around the memorial\, a statement proclaims Anishinaabe rights to the land we stand on: “You are on Anishinaabe Land.”  \n \nPresented alongside are paintings of imagined decolonized landscapes and a symbolic cache of provisions. Future Cache implicitly asks those who have benefited from the legacies of colonization to consider where they stand and where to go from here and seeks to foster a sense of belonging for displaced Indigenous peoples fighting for restitution.\n\nSpecial thanks to the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians\, Margaret Noodin\, and Richard A. Wiles\, for their consultation on the State Historical Marker text\; to Margaret Noodin and Michael Zimmerman\, Jr. for translating the gallery texts into Anishinaabemowin\; to James Horton and Fritz Swanson for generously producing the letterpress broadsides\; to colleagues at the U-M Biological Station\, U-M Museum of Anthropological Archaeology\, U-M Clements Library\, and U-M Clark Map Library. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Angkor Complex: Cultural Heritage and Post-Genocide Memory in Cambodia.
DESCRIPTION:Care in Uncertain Times\n \nAs crises of public health\, economic instability\, authoritarian regimes\, racial injustice\, and climate change spread around the globe\, millions are experiencing distress\, conflict\, uncertainty\, and vulnerability. This troubling combination of experiences is nothing new for Cambodians. Between 1975-1979\, when the Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia\, about a quarter of the country’s populations died of infectious diseases\, weapon wounds\, and malnutrition.\n \nThis exhibition brings together more than 80 works of art spanning a millennium to present how the visual culture of Cambodia and its diaspora has evolved in the face of cultural upheaval. Showcasing works from worldwide collections\, including those from some of the foremost members of the Cambodian contemporary art scene\, Angkor Complex allows viewers to encounter the still-fresh scars of a genocide and critically appreciate the strategies evolved to nurture resilience in trying times.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the U-M Office of the Provost\, U-M Office of the President\, National Endowment for the Arts\, Michigan Arts and Culture Council\, Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund\, and U-M Ross School of Business.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Curriculum / Collection
DESCRIPTION:In Curriculum / Collection\, an incredible variety of University of Michigan courses take material form. Collected for each course are objects that address the nature of materiality\, time\, and human interaction in relation to our environments\, our wars\, our relationships\, and our eccentricities. \n \nWorking in collaboration with University faculty\, the works in this exhibition were selected for their capacity to provoke engagement with the guiding questions and themes of their specific courses\, while also offering students inspiration for research and art projects in their areas of study. The exhibition demonstrates some of the diverse and creative ways art plays a central role in learning across the disciplines. It also asks us to consider what we can learn from art objects across an infinite variety of specialties and subject matter.\n \nAs classes begin in Fall of 2021\, you’ll be able to use these pages to explore the collections designed for each course\, dive into the works themselves\, and hear from the professors and students about how they are engaging with art and objects in new ways. Who knows\, maybe you’ll learn something surprising along the way\, too.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Erica Gervais Pappendick and Ted Pappendick\, and the Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund\, and the Oakriver Foundation.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Products from Pollution: Carbon Capture and Conversion
DESCRIPTION:Phasing out fossil fuels is a primary means to fight climate change\, but it alone is not enough. Even if all emissions ceased tomorrow\, atmospheric CO2 levels are already dangerously high and the climate would keep warming before it eventually stabilizes. We have to reduce or “capture” legacy CO2 to avert disaster. As the International Panel on Climate Change stated\, the *only* way we can meet our climate goal is to use carbon capture in our climate change fighting tool kit. \n\nMany of the products that we use every day are made with carbon. Treating legacy CO2 as a resource with economic value rather than a pollutant allows us to generate revenue while also fighting climate change. \n\nHowever\, not all uses or types of captured CO2 are equal in terms of environmental or economic benefits. This exhibit includes a video game that helps explain the pros and cons associated with different methods and applications of carbon capture. \n\nAdditionally\, it also provides examples of two types of carbon removal\, an interactive block activity\, and sample products made from captured CO2.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Labor Market Power\, Self-Employment\, and Development (joint (with F. Amodio and M. Morlacco).
DESCRIPTION:This paper shows that self-employment shapes labor market power in low-income countries\, with implications for industrial development. Using Peruvian data\, we show that wage-setting power increases with concentration\, but less so where self-employment is more prevalent. We build a general equilibrium model of oligopsony with worker sorting between wage work and self-employment. Concentration depresses wages\, but self-employment increases workers’ sensitivity to wage changes\, curbing labor market power. Policies to create salaried jobs make self-employment less attractive\, reducing labor supply elasticity and increasing markdowns. Counterfactual analyses show that eliminating labor market power can boost industrial policy effectiveness by up to 60%.\n\n\nThis talk is presented by the International Economics Seminar\, sponsored by the Department of Economics with generous gifts given through the Economics Strategic Fund.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CANCELED - CJS Thursday Noon Lecture Series | Japanese Traders in Seventeenth-Century Mexico City
DESCRIPTION:We apologize that we have had to cancel this event.\n\nFranco Xuo “of the Japanese nation” was living in Mexico City in the 1630s\, working as a trader. How did he come to be there and why did he stay? This talk examines his experiences along with those of other Japanese men to answer these questions. Their stories reveal that global trade in the early modern period depended on working men who moved thousands of miles away to take advantage of commercial centers knowing they might never return to their homelands.\n \n Tatiana Seijas is Associate Professor of History at Rutgers University. She writes about global migrations\, long-distance trade\, urban economies\, and the joined history of freedom and slavery. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Effects of Grandparental Proximity to Female Labor Supply
DESCRIPTION:Childcare arrangements are one of the primary determinants of labor market decisions undertaken by working parents with women\, who are still primary undertakers of caregiving and domestic activity in a household\, being at the center of the tradeoff between unpaid household work and paid work in the labor market. Despite the increasing availability of organized childcare facilities\, grandparents of the child still remain an important source of unpaid childcare by working parents. Using the micro-data from the U.S. census\, I measure the impact of informal childcare arrangements by grandparents by using two separate proxies: living in one's birth state and co-residence with an individual over 65. Using one's birth state as a proxy for residing close to one’s grandparents\, I find that living in close proximity to grandparents increases their odds of being in the labor market\; however\, for mothers that are already in the labor market this results in an insignificant decrease in the work hours. Contrarily\, using co-residence with an individual over 65 indicates that coresiding with the childs' grandparents has a negative correlation in both labor force participation as well as hours worked for working mothers. The magnitude and direction of these results vary by major ethno-racial groups in the U.S.\n\nPlease RSVP in the \"Related Links\" section of this listing. Lunch will be provided.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Psychology Diversity Week Colloquium and Awards Presentation: Dr. Onnie Rogers
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Onnie Rogers\, Associate Professor\, Department of Psychology\, Northwestern University\n\nAbstract: Both society and psychological science are deeply grounded in (and often perpetuate) racism. Diversifying our field is important but disrupting the racism in our science is essential. While human development is inextricable from structural racism and hierarchies of oppression\, too often developmental research locates processes in the micro-level of individuals and relationships\, ultimately obscuring how intimately macro-level forces shape development. In this talk\, I draw on the concept of “m(ai)cro” to explicitly intersect the individual and society in our discussion of human development (Rogers\, Niwa et al.\, 2021) and illustrate how this approach guides my research program on race and identity toward disrupting racism – in science and society.\n\nAbout the speaker: Dr. Leoandra Onnie Rogers is an associate professor of psychology and director of the Development of Identities in Cultural Environments (D.I.C.E) research lab at the Northwestern University. A developmental psychologist and identity scholar\, Rogers is interested in the mechanisms through which macro-level structures and ideologies of privilege and oppression are both perpetuated and disrupted at the micro-level of identities and relationships. Her projects examine how children and adolescents make sense of their intersecting racial\, ethnic and gender identities in relation to oppressive ideologies and stereotypes\; how identity processes shape and are shaped by sociocultural contexts and interpersonal interactions\; and the ways in which young people resist oppression and construct counternarratives and pathways toward liberation.\n\nRogers received her PhD in developmental psychology from New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture\, Education\, and Human Development and holds a BA in psychology and educational studies from the University of California\, Los Angeles (UCLA).\n\n* The winners of the Department of Psychology Diversity Awards will be announced following Dr. Rogers's presentation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:XR/XF: Extended Realities\, Extended Feminisms Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:XR/XF: Extended Realities\, Extended Feminisms brings together local\, national\, and international artists to create a site-specific multimedia exhibition and series of events on the University of Michigan campus and across the city of Ann Arbor. The exhibition will take place in various locations\, including a shipping container - the XR/XF pod - that will travel between 2 locations in Ann Arbor during the first two weeks of April.\n\nThe city of Ann Arbor has always been feminized. The story goes that in 1824\, John Allen and Elisha W. Rumsey founded the town and named it after their wives\, who were both named Ann. Since then\, the city has been anthropomorphized as a feminine body throughout the years. In the 1980s\, the University of Michigan’s football rivals in Ohio invented the infamous slogan\, “Ann Arbor is a Whore!” as a method to jeer at the opposition. Since then\, this offensive slogan has spread across the US and reappears every Fall during football season in Ann Arbor\, proliferating through both physical and digital objects. As one recent social media commenter notes: “That's what happens when you have a chick name for your city.”\n\nWith this project\, we strike/suspend gender from the city’s name: Ann Arbor is neither trophy wife nor whore. Instead\, we pose Ann Arbor as a feminist cyborg\, a feminist map\, and a creative\, participatory organism. We construct the body of the city differently\, with artistic intervention and cyberfeminist means: physical and digital installation\, activations of public space\, music\, performances\, and workshops. From the Bell Tower on central campus to the parking lot of the Liberty Annex\, we offer a creative activation that is both physical and digital and a fluid/complex/distributed image of the city through both XR and feminist means.\n\nCurated by Alina Nazmeeva and Yvette Granata. In collaboration with Tiffany Ng\, Tyler Musgrave\, Julie Zhu\, and Anıl Çamcı. Supported by the Arts Initiative at University of Michigan.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Oblique Histories: Nigerian Indigenous Architecture With and Against Zbigniew Dmochowski
DESCRIPTION:The impulse to decolonize architectural history often leads to a double bind. The critique of colonial epistemologies is accompanied by a revalorization of the colonial archives\, methods\, and experiences as indispensable sources for the understanding of architectural modernities. This symposium proposes a different approach. It traces the oblique trajectories of actors moving between what usually counts as the “peripheries” of the West. It focuses on the comprehensive study of Indigenous (“traditional”) architecture in Nigeria\, carried out between the 1950s and the 1970s by a Nigerian-Polish team led by Zbigniew Dmochowski (1903-82): architect\, historian\, and the first director of the Museum of Traditional Nigerian Architecture at Jos\, Nigeria.\n\nDmochowski’s surveys were based on research methods which he developed in the context of the interwar “internal colonization” of the Eastern European borderlands. Symposium participants will question his argument about the applicability of these methods for the decolonization of architecture in Nigeria. Speakers will debate how Nigerian educators\, architects\, and scholars have appropriated Dmochowski’s work against the paradigms of modernist architecture and nation-building that he advocated. In this way\, the seminar will foreground differing perspectives on colonialism while undermining the epistemic authority of the former colonial metropoles.\n\nThis symposium is supported by the African Heritage and Humanities Initiative (AHHI) Collaborative Faculty Seed Grant from the African Studies Center at the University of Michigan\, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies\, and the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia at the University of Michigan.\n\nPROGRAM\n2:00-2:05 pm: Welcome\n2:05-2:15 pm: Introduction: Oblique Histories\, Łukasz Stanek\, University of Michigan\n2:15-2:35 pm: Civilization\, Colonialism\, and the Built Environment in Interwar Poland’s Eastern Borderlands\, Kathryn Ciancia\, University of Wisconsin-Madison\n2:35-2:55 pm: The Unsaid: Performative Architectural History & the Limits of Certain Methods\, Adedoyin Teriba\, Dartmouth College\n2:55-3:15 pm: Demystifying Dmochowski: Found Knowledge and Indigenous Research Strategies\, Warebi Brisibe\, Rivers State University\, Port Harcourt\, Nigeria\n3:15-4:00 pm: Discussion\nPARTICIPANTS\nAdedoyin Teriba is an Assistant Professor of modern and contemporary architecture & urbanism at Dartmouth College\, specializing in modern and contemporary architecture & urbanism\, especially of West Africa and its diasporas. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar Series - Hosts on the run: disease and the evolution of dispersal
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our ongoing Thursday Seminar Series.\n\nAbstract: Much of our empirical and theoretical understanding of host-parasite interaction begins with an assumption of engagement\, in which host meets parasite and battle ensues. Hosts may\, however\, prevent engagement in the first place\, by actively or passively avoiding parasites. As the front line of defense\, avoidance may dictate patterns of disease spread\, the strength and nature of parasite-mediated selection\, and the potential for coevolution. My lab’s work specifically evaluates dispersal as a mechanism of parasite avoidance using the model nematode C. elegans and its natural microsporidian parasites. I’ll present theoretical and empirical results suggesting that 1) dispersal can sharply limit the spread of disease in metapopulations\, and 2) parasites favors individuals that are prone to disperse. Together\, our work supports avoidance strategies as architects of disease spread and defense evolution.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nCancer immunotherapy is revolutionizing the treatment of an ever-expanding diversity of cancer types\, yielding impressive complete and durable responses in a subset of patients. However\, most patients do not respond to currently approved immune checkpoint inhibitors. Our group is working to solve this emergent grand challenge in immuno-oncology through the development of molecularly engineered technologies that increase immune recognition of tumors. This talk will focus on our recent work in the design of therapeutics and drug carrier technologies for activation of antitumor innate immunity and how we are leveraging these materials to increase tumor immunogenicity and responses to immunotherapy.\n\nBio:\nJohn T. Wilson is an Associate Professor of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering and Chancellor Faculty Fellow at Vanderbilt University\, where he also Co-Leads the Host-Tumor Interactions Program within the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. Dr. Wilson graduated from Oregon State University with a B.S. in Bioengineering and received his Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He was awarded a Cancer Research Institute (CRI) Postdoctoral Fellowship to support his postdoctoral research at the University of Washington. Dr. Wilson started his independent career at Vanderbilt in 2014 and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2021. His multidisciplinary Immunoengineering Laboratory works at the interface of engineering and immunology to improve human health\, bringing together expertise in molecular engineering\, nanotechnology\, and pharmaceutical science to develop strategies for more precisely modulating immune and inflammatory responses at the tissue\, cell\, and subcellular level. He has published more than 50 scientific articles\, including in high-impact journals such as Nature Nanotechnology and Science Immunology. He is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) and has received several awards including the NSF CAREER award\, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation ‘A’ Award\, Stand Up To Cancer Innovative Research Grant Award\, CBME Young Innovator Award\, and Vanderbilt Chancellor’s Award for Research.\n\nZoom:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/94801149707

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Department of Astronomy Distinguished Alumna Colloquium Presents:
DESCRIPTION:\"Observational constraints on the population of massive black holes in dwarf galaxies\"\n\nThe population of massive black holes in dwarf galaxies offers a window into black hole formation in the early universe. The fraction of dwarf galaxies that host a massive black hole -- and the properties of those black holes -- are thought to depend on the mechanism by which they form. However\, black holes in dwarf galaxies can be challenging to find. I will describe my research group’s work searching for active massive black holes in dwarf galaxies\, particularly using variability and transients. I will also describe our efforts to constrain the overall occupation fraction of black holes in dwarf galaxies.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Differential Equations Seminar: Hilbert's sixth problem for waves
DESCRIPTION:Hilbert’s sixth problem asks for a mathematically rigorous justification of the macroscopic laws of statistical physics from the microscopic laws of dynamics. The classical setting of this problem asks for the justification of Boltzmann’s kinetic equation from Newtonian particle dynamics. This justification has been proven for short times\, starting with the work of Lanford in 1975\, but its long time justification remains one of the biggest open problems in kinetic theory. \n\nIf classical colliding particles are replaced with interacting waves\, one formally obtains what is known as \"wave kinetic theory”\, which is sometimes also called \"wave turbulence theory\". This theory of statistical physics for waves has been developed\, starting in the late 1920s\, for wave systems that arise in various scientific disciplines like many-particle quantum physics\, oceanography\, climate science\, etc. The central mathematical problem there is also the justification of a kinetic equation\, known as the wave kinetic equation\, starting from the Hamiltonian PDE that governs the corresponding microscopic system. In this talk\, we shall describe the state of the art of this problem\, leading to a most recent joint work with Yu Deng (USC)\, in which we give the first instance of a long time justification of a nonlinear (particle or wave) collisional kinetic limit.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC-CM Seminar | Emergent phases in quantum magnets: fractionalization\, fragmentation and new particles
DESCRIPTION:Moire superlattices of van der Waals materials have surfaced as new tunable quantum platforms for the realization of emergent phases. While moire-induced electronic phases have been extensively explored over the past few years\, moire engineering of magnetic phases is a newer emerging topic. In the first part of my talk\, I will discuss how stacking dependent interlayer exchange can be used to create novel spin textures such as skyrmions. I will illustrate this mechanism by applying it to twisted bilayers of Cr-based trihalides (1) and α-RuCl3 (2). In the second part\, I will focus on quantum spin liquid bilayers and discuss how twist angle and interlayer exchange can be utilized to create new topological phases with new emergent quasiparticles such as ‘fractionalized Goldstone bosons’ in these systems (3\,4\,5). \n\n(1) M. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Manuscript Studies Interest Group
DESCRIPTION:The Manuscript Studies Interest Group aims to bring together faculty\, graduate students\, librarians/curators\, fellows/visiting scholars\, and anyone else at U-M interested in manuscript studies or engaged in research on manuscripts. Manuscript cultures are central to premodern societies. Different manuscript formats and material substrates connect texts\, images\, languages\, reading practices\, and ritual performances\, which in a university setting are often split across multiple departments and fields. Having this broad framework will enable the interest group to explore collaboration across disciplines and facilitate research among different manuscript traditions through an object-centered approach.\n\nIn monthly meetings during the Fall and Winter terms\, participants will present on current research interests as well as give more general overviews of particular manuscript cultures for informal discussion and exchange. They will also occasionally discuss key readings which have shaped manuscript studies in specific areas or in broader ways. In addition\, the interest group hopes to be able to explore manuscript collections in person together\, both in and around Ann Arbor as well as further afield. Inviting an external speaker once a year (potentially funded through the History of Art Department) would be a great way to connect the interest group with scholars beyond U-M.\n\nOrganized by Tina Bawden (History of Art) and Trent Walker (Asian Languages & Cultures)\n\nPlease contact the group organizers for the location.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Photophysics of Photocatalytic and Radical Systems
DESCRIPTION:Photoredox catalysis has enabled researchers to overcome previously intractable problems in organic synthesis. The use of light to drive catalysis has allowed for more selective reactions that generate both simple and complex molecules from renewable and economical starting materials under mild conditions. Using ultrafast broadband time-resolved spectroscopy\, the Huxter group studies photoinduced single-electron transfer and electronic dynamics in photoredox catalytic and radical systems. These studies have revealed complex mechanisms of photoredox catalytic reactions\, including the involvement of reduced solvent as intermediates\, multiple photoproducts as well as many productive and unproductive pathways. In addition\, our experiments on neutral radical transition metal tripyrrindione systems with tunable redox-active chemistry have demonstrated controllable spin states\, reversible antiferromagnetic coupling\, and spin-dependent electronic relaxation.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:FAST Lecture | Passing the Salt: Investigating an Overlooked Commodity in the Roman Empire
DESCRIPTION:Salt is an essential commodity in the diet of both humans and animals. It also flavors and preserves food\, and it is employed in activities such as dyeing clothes\, working with metals\, and making perfumes and medicines. Its manufacture and uses have recently begun to attract attention in some regions of the ancient world\, although it has long been overlooked in others. This presentation considers the manufacture of salt in the province of Africa Proconsularis—and elsewhere in the Roman empire—and argues for the strong possibility that the product was destined for both local and long-distance markets. \n\nDavid Stone is a lecturer in the U-M Department of Classical Studies. His research interests include the intersectionality of urbanism\, economy\, and imperialism in the Roman world\, particularly in North Africa. He is involved in several excavations and field surveys\, including the urban survey of Leptiminus in Tunisia\, and he serves as the director of field survey for both the Olynthos Project and the Pella Urban Dynamics Project. \n\nThis event will take place in Room 125 of the Kelsey Museum’s Newberry Hall. Light refreshments and food will be provided before the lecture\, which will begin at 6 PM.\n\nFAST (Field Archaeology Series on Thursday) lectures are free and open to the public. If you have any questions or concerns regarding accessing this event\, please visit our accessibility page at https://myumi.ch/zwPkd or contact the education office by calling (734) 647-4167. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Public Lecture: “Species Insurance”: Harriet Tubman\, Environmental Storytelling\, and Historical Modes of Survival
DESCRIPTION:Format: Lecture followed by book signing with light refreshments. Literati Bookstore will sell copies of Professor Miles's book. \n\nAbstract: Borrowing the words of Octavia E. Butler for theoretical inspiration\, this talk engages in a thought experiment. What if we were to take Harriet Tubman\, one of the most famous historical figures in the US\, and center her in an environmental story? What would we learn about Tubman herself? What would we notice about Black women in the nineteenth century and the role of place and ecology in their survival? And what connections might we draw between Black women’s environmental thinking in the multi-temporal past and the greatest challenges facing our species in the murky present and future?\n\nBiography: Tiya Miles is the author of seven books\, including four prize-winning studies on the history of American slavery. Her works include the National Book Award winner\, All That She Carried\, The Journey of Ashley’s Sack\, a Black Family Keepsake\; Wild Girls: How the Outdoors Shaped the Women Who Challenged a Nation\; The Dawn of Detroit: A Chronicle of Slavery and Freedom in the City of the Straits\, and Ties That Bind: The Story of an Afro-Cherokee Family in Slavery and Freedom\, among others. She has written prize-winning historical fiction: The Cherokee Rose: A Novel of Gardens and Ghosts\, shared her travels to \"haunted\" historic sites of slavery in a published lecture series\, and written various articles and op-eds (in The New York Times\, The Boston Globe\, The Atlantic\, CNN.com\, and more) on women’s history\, history and memory\, Black public culture\, and Black and Indigenous interrelated experience. Miles’s forthcoming book\, Night Flyer: Harriet Tubman and the Faith Dreams of a Free People\, will be published by Penguin Press in June. Miles taught on the faculty of the University of Michigan for sixteen years and is currently the Michael Garvey Professor of History at Harvard University. Her work has been supported by the MacArthur Foundation\, the Mellon Foundation\, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg. Additional support from the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies.

SUMMARY:Performance:\"People Are Things\" – Devised
DESCRIPTION:Undergraduate student Tiara Partsch directs this senior thesis show\, a performance of the devised work\, *People Are Things*.\n\nSylvie is a woman like any other. She does not cry when her husband leaves her\; in fact\, she does not say a word – that is\, until she slips a knife in her bag\, before heading out to work. \n\nAs she navigates presence\, absence and their respective boundaries\, Sylvie finds herself on the edge of the world: although no one *really* gets hurt\, this story deals in all-absorbing violence\, the silent kind: the kind which Sylvie finds in every area of her life\, her marriage\, her house\, her employer – an existential violence she attempts (and fails) to contain and define. *People Are Things* is a study of silence. The aura of it\; the sound it might long for at night.\n\nPresented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Performance: Directing.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Leinweber Center for Theoretical Physics Public Lecture | Are we alone in the universe?
DESCRIPTION:After decades of searching\, scientists have still found no evidence of extraterrestrial civilizations\, or indeed of any life beyond Earth. So are we looking for the wrong thing in the wrong place? Is the transition from non-life to life easy and widespread\, or a chemical fluke? Might there be new physics lurking in living matter? The answers to these questions affect where we might look for a second genesis. Rather than pinning our hopes on a message from ET\, we need to broaden the search for general ‘biosignatures’ and ‘technosignatures’ in the solar system and beyond.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Cherry Orchard
DESCRIPTION:Anton Chekhov’s *The Cherry Orchard* is considered one of the great classic works of Russian theatre\, having been translated into countless languages and produced all over the world. Some of the greatest American playwrights – such as Arthur Miller\, David Mamet\, and Eugene O’Neill – were directly influenced by Chekhov.\n\nAfter a prolonged absence following the death of her son\, noblewoman Lyobov Ranevskaya returns to her estate and finds the cherry orchard on the estate in full bloom. Despite this outward sign of prosperity\, her home is on the verge of financial ruin. Along with her brother\, Gaev\, Lyobov struggles to maintain the façade of gentility as their world crumbles around them.\n\nWritten by Anton Chekhov\nTranslated by Paul Schmidt\nDirected by Daniel Cantor\n\nFUN FACTS: Is *The Cherry Orchard* a comedy or a tragedy? It depends on who you ask. According to artlark.org\, “The original intention of Chekhov was for *The Cherry Orchard* to be a comedy\; yet\, [Constantin] Stanislavsky [famous actor/director and creator of the eponymous Stanislavsky method\, known as ‘method acting’] turned it into a tragedy.” Russian literature scholar Svetlana Evdokimova quotes Stanislavsky as saying\, “‘This is not a comedy\, not a farce\, as you wrote\; it is a tragedy\, whatever outlet for a better life you may have offered in the last act… I hear you saying: “Wait a minute\, but this is a farce…” No\, for an ordinary person this is a tragedy.’” Yet this conflict is what makes *The Cherry Orchard* such good theatre. As Evdokimova says\, “Clearly\, the source of the comic lies not in the play’s fabula or situation\, not in what happens\, but in how it happens and to whom it happens. The enigmatic\, captivating\, and almost mesmerising effect that *The Cherry Orchard* continues to exert on its audience is to be found in its good-humoured but foolish protagonists – both charming in their gullibility and pathetic in their utter confusion.”
