DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Modernist Glass from the Polish Past
DESCRIPTION:The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass)\, the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. We are grateful to them for making this remarkable exhibit possible at CCPS and WCEE.\n\nOrganized by the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies\, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Penny W. SUMMARY:Exhibition:CES Exhibition. Camera as Passport: The Ship of Photographers
DESCRIPTION:Starting in 1933 when Hitler and the Nazis came to power\, a cadre of European Jews—German\, Polish\, Hungarian\, Austrian\, French—discovered that a camera could be their passport\, first out of Germany and then out of Europe. Some of these women and men had been planning one type of career—lawyer\, journalist\, painter\, musician—but then realized that they needed to find another way to earn a living. Taking photographs presented a sufficiently malleable opportunity that not only allowed them to leave Germany and then Europe but also to have a means to sustain themselves in foreign countries where they did not necessarily speak the language.\n   \n   They did\, however\, mobilize the visual language of photography. For a number of these figures\, forced migration became an asset during the golden age of photojournalism wherein their portable services were employed to supply picture stories on the move and around the world. Many of these Jews became influential photographers\, shaping how their contemporaries saw the world. Looking back on their work\, we can see how they have influenced our understanding of the modern world even as we can recognize their photographs as a significant component of modern Jewish visual culture.\n   \n   Of the dozens of photographers who fled Europe\, eight escaped on a single ship. The S. S. Winnipeg sailed from Marseille\, France on May 7\, 1941. Germany had already conquered both eastern and western Europe and was poised to invade the Soviet Union. The United States was not yet in the war. Among the 750 refugees aboard were photographers from Hungary\, Belgium\, France\, and Germany: Ilse Bing\, Josef Breitenbach\, Boris Lipnitsky\, Charles Leirens\, Yolla Niclas\, Fred Stein\, Monie Tannen\, and Ylla (Camilla Henriette Koffler). During lifeboat drills\, they discovered each other. Some of them narrowly escaped Vichy France under the auspices of the American journalist Varian Fry and the New York-based Emergency Rescue Committee that helped so many Jewish and anti-Fascist artists get out of Europe in the nick of time.\n   \n   This exhibit introduces the University of Michigan to this intrepid group as exemplary case studies of the wide range of European photographers who used their cameras as passports to other worlds. It focuses first on their European experiences pre-emigration before turning to their escape from Europe on the S. S. Winnipeg (with three of them taking photos on board the ship). The exhibit concludes with examples of some of their initial photographic reactions to the new world\, seeing it through European eyes.\n   \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Propositions to Progress: A Working Atlas of the Global South
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, maps have served as a panoptic technology\, assisting imperial powers in governance\, discipline\, and control. In this exhibit\, internationally renowned Filipino artist Cian Dayrit acts as a counter-cartographer\, reclaiming mapmaking as an emancipatory activity.\n\nDayrit’s artworks\, embroidered on textiles or painted over collages of colonial-era maps\, plot the extraction of natural resources\, land grabbing\, and dispossession and displacement in his native Philippines. At the same time\, their resistant lines summon new imaginaries out of the overlaps between places and memories.\n\nDayrit’s practice is critically and practically informed by the narratives of Filipino communities. Items exhibited alongside his artwork are the result of map-drawing workshops the artist has convened with rural\, urban\, and indigenous communities across the Philippines. Propositions to Progress invites you to engage in the collaborative endeavor to activate alternative territories from the ground up.\n\nCian Dayrit is an interdisciplinary artist exploring colonialism and ethnography\, archaeology\, history\, and mythology. Dayrit subverts the language of the state\, museum\, and military to visualize the contradictions on which these institutions are built. He studied at the University of the Philippines.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibit is an extension of Souq Stories (https://souqstories.insaniyyat.org/)\, which was displayed in 2021 in all seven of the historic markets it depicts in Gaza\, Nazareth\, Acre\, Nablus\, Jerusalem\, Khalil\, and Jaffa. Its youth group organizers aimed to bolster Palestinian unity across the systemic barriers — colonial divides\, military checkpoints\, walls\, etc. — that fragment the lives of people living in Palestine. \n\nSouq Stories: Gaza Lives brings us to present-day Gaza\, sharing the stories of\, and images captured by\, young journalists and photographers who have continued to document the realities of life in Palestine. It also honors one among them\, Fouad Abu Khammash\, who was killed in January 2024 in an Israeli bomb attack on Gaza.\n\n< The exhibit includes images of people suffering the aftermath of the ongoing violence. >\n\nThis exhibit was curated by Souq Stories team members Shareef Sarhan and Waed Abbas in partnership with U-M students Amir Marshi\, Zainab Hakim\, Mariam Odeh\, and Vivian M. Nguyen. It’s offered in conjunction with this year’s Palestine Awareness Week\, an annual series of educational events related to Palestinian history\, culture\, and politics. DESCRIPTION:This small exhibit features work in reproduction by Iraqi artists Hanaa Malallah and Mohammed Karim\, as well as an original painting by Karim. Both Malallah and Karim were significantly influenced by their mentors during and after their training in Iraq\, and continue to share their work and ideas with a new generation today.\n\nIn the United States\, Iraq is typically spoken about in a passive position: colonized\, under despotic rule\, occupied. Post-occupied. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Garden Repairs
DESCRIPTION:About the installation:\nGarden Repairs is an installation of paper textiles that loosely narrate the life cycle of plants. It considers the process of germination as a site for the cross-pollination of ideas from diverse disciplines around the future of the built environment. \n\nAbout the artist:\nSusan Goethel Campbell creates multi-disciplinary work that considers the contemporary landscape to be an emergent system where nature\, culture\, and the engineered environment are indistinguishable from one another. Central to her practice is the collection\, documentation\, and observation of seasonal change and ephemera in both natural and artificial environments. Her work is realized in several formats\, including installation\, video\, prints\, and drawings\, as well as projects that engage communities to look at local and global environments.\n\nCampbell earned an MFA in printmaking from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her work has been exhibited internationally in Belgium\, Germany\, Switzerland\, and Slovenia and nationally throughout the US\, including the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, Queens Art Museum\, Crystal Bridges Museum\, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit\, Grand Rapids Art Museum\, the Detroit Institute of Arts\, The Drawing Center\, and The International Print Center New York. In 2009 she was one of 18 artists selected for the inaugural Kresge Artist Fellowship.\n\nCampbell has been awarded residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts\, the Flemish Center for Graphic Arts\, the Jentel Foundation\, Beisinghoff Print Residency\, and the Print Research Institute of North Texas. She taught studio art for 15 years at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit and has been a visiting artist in numerous institutions in the United States and abroad. Her work is in the collection of the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, New York Public Library\, Detroit Institute of Arts\, Toledo Museum of Art\, and the University of Michigan Special Collections Library.\n\nThis project is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities' multi-year High Stakes Art initiative.

During this time of swift cultural transformation\, Chinese artists embraced the immediacy of photography to document the changes around them as well as their own thoughts and actions as they shifted their focus away from the collective to prioritize self-expression. SUMMARY:Exhibition:My Gender States
DESCRIPTION:On display at Lane Hall\, Rogério M. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States\,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \n\nUsing autoethnography\, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Marília\,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead\,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas\, gender states\, and his life experience—a story of the struggles\, fears\, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm\,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto’s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he\, a queer immigrant\, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials\, images\, and texts from \"Marília\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Collected are portrayals of Pinto’s gender states\, gender confusion\, gender embodiments\, gender doubt\, and reactions to gender stigma. \n\nRogério M. Pinto (Brazilian\, American\, b. 1965\, Belo Horizonte\, Brazil) is a University Diversity Social Transformation Professor\; Berit Ingersoll-Dayton Collegiate Professor of Social Work\; and Professor of Theatre and Drama\, School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, at the University of Michigan. Pinto uses art-based methods to conduct community-engaged research in the United States and Brazil.\n\nThe photographs used in \"My Gender States\" are by Emerson Granillo (American\, b. 1987)\; David Newton (American\, b. 1993)\; and Nicholas Williams (American\, b. 1994). The \"Realm\" assemblages featured in \"My Gender States\" were conceived by Pinto and designed by him\, in collaboration with Sarah Tanner. \n\n\"My Gender States\" is on display in the Lane Hall Exhibit Space (first floor\, 204 S State St) from January 23\, to August 13\, 2024. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Orson Welles as Family Man: Son\, Husband\, Father
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit provides a unique glimpse into the actor/director Orson Welles’ private life. Unlike previous U-M Library exhibits that focused on the artist at work\, this display shows him in informal and familial environments\, revealing a depth and complexity of character that are often overshadowed by his fame and professional achievements. The photographs and documents displayed showcase a variety of emotional tones — warmth\, humor\, tenderness\, and passion. Candid and relaxed more than posed\, they are similar to most people's pictures in old family albums.\n\nCulled from the Orson Welles-Beatrice Welles materials that are part of the Mavericks & Makers collection within the U-M Library’s Special Collections Research Center\, each photo or letter tells a story of a connection Welles held dearly. The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s\, when Welles was a teenager\, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s\, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife\, Paola Mori. \n\nIt should be noted that Welles’s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages\, including the Welles-Feder Collection and the Wilson-Welles Collection. The items on display here were saved by his third and final child\, Beatrice Welles\, and reflect her childhood memories of her parents.\n\nThe exhibit is available during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://umlib.us/hatchergalleryexhibits).

DESCRIPTION:In Andrea Carlson Future Cache\, a 40-foot-tall memorial wall towers over visitors\, commemorating the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians who were violently burned from their land in Northern Michigan on October 15\, 1900. Written across the walls above and around the memorial\, a statement proclaims Anishinaabe rights to the land we stand on: “You are on Anishinaabe Land.”  \n \nPresented alongside are paintings of imagined decolonized landscapes and a symbolic cache of provisions. Future Cache implicitly asks those who have benefited from the legacies of colonization to consider where they stand and where to go from here and seeks to foster a sense of belonging for displaced Indigenous peoples fighting for restitution.\n\nSpecial thanks to the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians\, Margaret Noodin\, and Richard A. DESCRIPTION:Care in Uncertain Times\n \nAs crises of public health\, economic instability\, authoritarian regimes\, racial injustice\, and climate change spread around the globe\, millions are experiencing distress\, conflict\, uncertainty\, and vulnerability. This troubling combination of experiences is nothing new for Cambodians. Between 1975-1979\, when the Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia\, about a quarter of the country’s populations died of infectious diseases\, weapon wounds\, and malnutrition.\n \nThis exhibition brings together more than 80 works of art spanning a millennium to present how the visual culture of Cambodia and its diaspora has evolved in the face of cultural upheaval. SUMMARY:Presentation:EEB Student Thesis Defense: Comparing Methods to Estimate the Seasonal Migration Distance of Passerine Birds
DESCRIPTION:EEB Student Thesis Defense presented by Andrea Benavides Castaño.\nAbstract: Over many decades\, migratory birds have experienced significant population declines. Understanding where they occur in space and time is fundamental to addressing those declines and understanding other attributes to their life history. Geolocators attached to individual birds and range maps summarizing the seasonal distributions of species provide two sources of information to estimate migration distance and have revealed important discoveries about the migration journey. Studying migration distance is important because it can influence the timing\, speed\, and duration of migration\, reproduction\, and more. However\, it is not clear how closely aligned the estimates of migration distance are between these two different methods. For this reason\, I compared the migration distance from geolocators and range maps of 24 species of North American passerine birds. Both geolocators and range maps can be a powerful consideration to determine conservation strategies throughout birds’ migration routes.

DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... DESCRIPTION:Diamond is a highly attractive material as a solid-state host for a class of crystal defect spin-based qubits\, which exhibit high stability even under ambient conditions. Carbon-12 isotopically purified diamond is also spin free\, allowing for exceptionally long coherence times.  I will introduce the challenges and opportunities in this field and present the results of our ongoing efforts to identify new defects in diamond with long coherence times and high-quality optical interfaces\, as well as our efforts to controllably create vacancy defects in solid state systems through multiphoton femtosecond laser nanofabrication.

This talk will be recorded for later viewing.\n\nAbstract: The US political arena is a bleak mix of distressing and aggravating\, particularly in the current highly polarized climate\, but that only increases the need to honestly and scientifically understand the forces at play in ideological space. This talk will share some recent and ongoing attempts to visualize and understand the current political landscape\, as well as some quantitative patterns in political psychology and the modern information ecosystem. These recently-gathered data inform a mechanistic dynamical model of ideological drift\, allowing theory to extrapolate the complex implications of micro-scale data to macro-scale outcomes---while iteratively improving and suggesting further data-gathering efforts to corner remaining uncertainty. The first wave of results from this perspective provide some remarkable insights\, providing some hope of understanding and productively informing political messaging and algorithmic design for a more reasonable political future.

Please attend in real time.\n\nThis talk uses Aichi Prefecture's Atsumi Peninsula and the waters that surround it as a lens for understanding post-WWII democratization efforts on a micro scale in a region far removed from the oversight of General Douglas MacArthur\, Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers in Tokyo. Citizen efforts in the late 1940s and early 1950s to combat the power of entrenched local political and economic bosses will be considered in light of disputes regarding seaweed harvesting rights\, opposition to the requisitioning of local land for a Self Defense Forces Shooting Range\, and the reconstruction of infrastructure following the 1953 Ise Bay Typhoon.\n   \n   Emer O'Dwyer is director of the East Asian Studies Program at Oberlin College and associate professor of history and East Asian studies. She specializes in 20th-century Japanese history with research interests in imperialism\, democracy\, and the post-war Allied Occupation. DESCRIPTION:University Carillonist Tiffany Ng & Musicology PhD student Eric Whitmer perform on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Earplugs are available from the carillonist upon request. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. DESCRIPTION:Presenter Bio:\n\nLei Ying is currently a Professor at the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department of the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, an IEEE Fellow\, and an Editor-at-Large for the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking. His research is broadly in the interplay of complex\nstochastic systems and big data\, including reinforcement learning\, large-scale communication/computing systems\, private data marketplaces\, and large-scale graph mining. He won the Young Investigator Award from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) in 2009 and the NSF CAREER Award in 2010. He was the Northrop Grumman Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Iowa State University from 2010 to 2012. His papers have received the best paper award at IEEE INFOCOM 2015\, the Kenneth C. Sevcik Outstanding Student Paper Award at ACM SIGMETRICS/IFIP Performance 2016 and the WiOpt’18 Best Student Paper Award\; his papers have also been selected in ACM TKDD Special\nIssue “Best Papers of KDD 2016”\, Fast-Track Review for TNSE at IEEE INFOCOM 2018 (7 out of 312 accepted papers were invited)\, and Best Paper Finalist at MobiHoc 2019.\n\nAbstract:\nData-driven learning and decision-making in complex systems are often subject to a variety of operational constraints such as safety\, fairness\, and budget constraints. The problem becomes particularly challenging when the constraints are unknown\, sometimes adversarial\,\nand must be learned while making decisions. This talk presents some of our recent results on this topic\, focusing on solving unknown CMDPs using model-free approaches.

To safeguard these species and prevent further losses\, it is imperative to deepen our comprehension of taxonomy and evolutionary relationships\, thereby establishing effective conservation priorities. Over the past 15 years\, I have developed a research program in Fish Evolution & Systematics (Fish-ES) aimed at unraveling the forces driving the diversification and evolution of marine fishes\, with emphasis on Gadiformes (codfishes\, hakes\, rattails\, and allies) and other economically significant species. In my presentation\, I will showcase several past and ongoing projects incorporating classic and cutting-edge morphological\, ecological\, geochemical\, and genomics techniques. DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe design of new strategies to dampen or boost the immune response stands as a key challenge for the scientific community. As our understanding of fundamental immunology and biotechnological methodology accumulates\, this combined knowledge can be leveraged to engineer immunomodulators with the aim of rationally manipulating the immune response. One potentially transformative approach involves engineering microorganisms to produce potent immunostimulatory agents or execute complex immunological tasks. Indeed\, research in synthetic biology has led to the creation of biological matter with profoundly useful immune functions\, including bacteria and bacteria-derived products that perform multistep immune functions such as presenting antigen to and co-stimulating helper T cells in a specific manner\, or providing integrated signals to B cells to induce affinity maturation and isotype switching during antibody production. Along these lines\, our group has developed technologies for custom remodeling of bacterial cell surfaces with protein and small-molecule motifs (for example\, carbohydrates or reactive functional groups) that become packaged in released outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). In this seminar\, I will discuss our efforts to engineer OMVs for delivering carbohydrate antigens to the immune system and provoking robust antibody responses to these notoriously recalcitrant antigens. Our unique ability to boost immunological responses to carbohydrates is enabling the creation of a new class of conjugate vaccines for targeting glycans in disease as well as the discovery of high-affinity antibodies that specifically recognize carbohydrates of interest\, in particular tumor-associated carbohydrate antigens. We anticipate that the synthetic immunology tools developed herein will open the door to new glycan-based therapies with the potential to treat or prevent a diverse range of diseases including autoimmune disorders\, cancer\, and infectious diseases.\n\nBio:\nMatthew P. DeLisa is the William L. Lewis Professor of Engineering in the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Cornell University. His research focuses on understanding and controlling the molecular mechanisms underlying protein biogenesis -- folding and assembly\, membrane translocation and post-translational modifications -- in the complex environment of a living cell. Professor DeLisa received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Connecticut in 1996\; a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Maryland in 2001\; and did postdoctoral work at the University of Texas-Austin\, Department of Chemical Engineering. DeLisa joined the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Cornell University in 2003. He has also served as a Gastprofessur at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zürich) in the Institut für Mikrobiologie. He has garnered a number of honors and awards including most recently the ACS Marvin J. Johnson Award in Microbial and Biochemical Technology and the Biotechnology Progress Award for Excellence in Biological Engineering Publication\, along with being named to the inaugural “Life Sciences Power 50” by City & State New York. As stars emit a wide spectrum of radiation and particles\, these emissions can profoundly influence the formation\, evolution\, composition\, and overall fate of a planet's atmosphere. This discussion bridges the gap between astrophysical phenomena and planetary science\, highlighting how solar/stellar winds\, eruptions\, and high-energy light contribute to atmospheric erosion\, induce chemical reactions\, and potentially drive the dynamics of weather and aurorae on exoplanets. Key to our exploration are systems like TRAPPIST-1\, which are challenging our understanding of atmospheric retention under intense stellar activity\, and the nearby Sun-like stars that will be targeted for habitable planets by the Habitable Worlds Observatory. In this talk\, we will explore recent observations and theoretical models that examine interaction mechanisms between stellar emissions and exoplanet atmospheres. We will also discuss several future space missions that will provide much needed additional stellar data. By understanding the complex dynamics of these critical yet often overlooked interactions\, we can better understand observed exoplanet demographics\, new JWST exoplanet spectra\, and predict which exoplanets might harbor conditions suitable for life as we know it.

DESCRIPTION:In joint work with Pratik Misra and Pardis Semnani\, we study the spanning tree generating function of a graph. When the graph is chordal\, we show that the corresponding statistical model has maximum likelihood degree one\; when the graph is a cycle on n vertices\, we show that the corresponding statistical model has maximum likelihood degree equal to the nth Eulerian number. These results support our conjecture that the spanning tree generating function is a homaloidal polynomial if and only if the graph is chordal. We also provide an algebraic formulation for the defining equations of these models. I will begin by introducing graphical models and homaloidal polynomials (background knowledge in algebraic statistics is not required).

DESCRIPTION:Integrable PDEs arise as leading-order models in an astoundingly wide range of physical scenarios\, such as fluid dynamics\, ferromagnetism\, and nonlinear optics. For rapidly decaying solutions\, the inverse scattering method provides a powerful tool for understanding their dynamics. However\, due to the requirement of rapid decay\, inverse scattering techniques cannot be used to analyze even the set of all finite energy solutions. In this talk\, I will survey some recent work on the dynamics of solutions to integrable PDEs in translation-invariant spaces. In particular\, I will discuss several optimal well-posedness results obtained in collaboration with Rowan Killip\, Maria Ntekoume\, and Monica Visan.

Each DISCO Graduate Scholar will give an eight minute “lightning talk” on their research affiliated with their DISCO Network lab. \n\nGROUP 1: 4:00 - 4:50 PM\n\n“Drifting through the Technosphere” with Ria Rajan (Stony Brook University)\nAs a digital nomad\, I am deeply interested in the present future—specifically\, the cyber future. This is the future I feel most primed for. When I consider this future\, I am self-reflexive about my relationship with cyberspace and the embodied technologies of our daily lives.\n\nGenerationally\, a post-colonial millennial\, who grew up on the move through changing environments and shifting landscapes\, weaving in and out of times and spaces is my modus operandi. This has played a significant role in shaping my relationship to places\, duration and traces.\n\nMovement and stasis are the primary lenses through which I process the world and continue\nto be a source of inspiration and inquiry. This idea of mobility has led to a creative practice that is inherently itinerant and iterative\, with a focus on intangible\, ephemeral and transient experiences –- IRL and online. For this talk\, I will address how my practice-based research  highlights ontological modes of production and hybrid media objects. \n\n“BPG[Dot]Com: An Examination of Black Grief and Commemorative Practices in a Digital Context” with Tynesha McCullers (North Carolina State University) \n\"Death is a part of the human experience\; it is inevitable that individuals will experience loss throughout their lifetime so finding ways to grieve and cope will be necessary. Death is a part of the human experience\; it is inevitable that individuals will experience loss throughout their lifetime so finding ways to grieve and cope will be necessary. Cultural rituals and practices surrounding death\, grief and commemoration vary and are shaped by several social positions of the bereaved including religion/spirituality\, race\, gender\, class\, and nationality. Prior to the inception of the internet and in the days before social networking sites (SNSs)\, death and grief were managed based on proximity to the deceased. Today\, the internet has shifted not only the ways people experience dying (Andersson\, 2017) but also how the bereaved cope with death (Willis & Ferrucci\, 2017). Kania-Lundholm (2019) writes “media communication technologies and social media…have contributed to the expansion of death and mourning” so they are no longer simply private but now public and sometimes global events. In a society that is becoming more technologically advanced\, the shift from institutionalized commemorative rituals to personal rhetorical modes of communicating and coping with loss online\, is more common. Therefore\, mourning on social media platforms can be viewed as an extension to various other sociocultural practices as they relate to loss\, grief\, and commemoration.\n\nPrevious research on the use of digital technologies to express grief and cope with loss\, centers itself around six themes – thanatechnology (Sofka\, 1997)\, fans grieving celebrity deaths (Sanderson & Cheong\, 2010)\, cultural expectations in communicating grief (Boss & Carnes\, 2012\; Prigerson & Jacobs\, 2001)\, online grief practices (Lingel\, 2013)\, (in)appropriate etiquette for sharing and reacting to death (Wagner\, 2018) and affordances/limitations of SNS policies for bereaved users (Moyer & Enck\, 2018). While current scholarship on death\, grief\, and commemoration via digital technology is ongoing and presented in a universalizable way\, minimal attention has been given to the roles that demographics play in death and mourning in technology-mediated culture. In an effort to extend the scholarship on death\, grief\, and digital commemoration practices\, this project broadly asks “how have communication technologies impacted the grief and mourning practices of Black people”. By examining Black people’s uses of communication technologies and social media platforms\, in their grief and commemorative rituals\, we can gain a better understanding of ways to support them as they cope with losses that are inevitable.\"\n\n“미역국 (miyeokguk) asmr: Recipes as Ritual in the Computational Present” with pruneah Kim (University of Michigan) \nIn this talk\, I hope to briefly speak on an ongoing project\, titled 미역국 (miyeokguk) asmr\, that investigates the sociopolitical possibilities that open up when we turn to the repetitive but always different motions of ritual in our computational present. If digital capitalism is predicated on prediction\, where does ritual take us? Drawing from Romi Ron Morrison and Loren Britton’s[1] (2021) attention to ritual over prediction\, I want to know what happens when we position recipes as a practice of ritual. Where does this take us? What if we attend to recipes as a mapping of movement\, a choreography\, instead of a means to an end? I’m especially interested in playing around with the genre of recipe\, precisely because of our taken for granted framing of them as a predictive practice. So much so that recipes operate as the base analogy to coding and algorithm\, a full disservice to recipes in my opinion. The attention is paid to the product. And we fail to notice and value the already present movements\, encounters\, intentions\, history\, intellect\, impulses and sociality that occurs around it. My hunch here is that there is a lot to gain in noticing these things. \n\nThis project is part of my broader dissertation research that aims to explore the worldbuilding possibilities of food in BIPOC communities\, especially within queer Asian diasporic communities in North America.\n\n“‘The arms are as long as printed exclamation marks!!’ Women’s Health DIY Print Cultures\, 1970-2016” with Elise Nagy (University of Michigan) \nThis presentation takes up women’s health DIY print cultures of the 1970s and 2010s. I explore the self-representational visual/textual artifacts therein as a kind of “reproductive technology” in their own right. I suggest that these texts raise a particular set of questions and possibilities related to women’s material embodiment\, reproductive capacity\, and anti-determinist claims\, staked on the page and on the body. Primarily glancing off of the earliest edition of what would become Our Bodies\, Ourselves\, then titled Women and Their Bodies: A Course (1970)\, by the Boston Women’s Health Book Collective\; Mira Bellwether’s 2010 zine titled Fucking Trans Women\; and micha cárdenas’ 2016 piece “Pregnancy: Reproductive Futures in Trans of Color Feminism\,” this brief presentation explores how each of these texts can be better understood in conversation with what Michelle Murphy has theorized as the “protocol feminism” of feminist self help: “a form of feminism concerned with the recrafting and distribution of technosocial practices by which the care and study of sexed living-being could be conducted.”\n\nGROUP 2: 4:50 - 5:20 PM\n\n“If You Know\, You Know: Black Digital Culture and the Right to Opacity” with Jasmine Banks (University of Michigan)\nThis research delves into how Black users navigate the complexities of the digital\, leveraging the existence of Black digital spaces that are cultural hubs for everyday discourse and camaraderie\, expression\, and community while challenges and systemic biases still permeate these environments. Drawing on focus group discussions with 19 Black social media users\,  I examine the discursive formation “if you know\, you know” a sentiment\, a feeling of just knowing that a meme\, a hashtag\, or online moment was/is a Black cultural moment. I investigate this phenomenon through the lens of opacity—the deliberate choice to eschew transparency as a means of navigating the digital landscape. I discuss how users leverage opacity to foster community bonds\, assert their right to privacy\, and maintain control over their cultural identity within the digital sphere.\n\n“Babri retold: rewriting popular memory through Islamophobic humor” with Pratiksha Thangam Menon (University of Michigan) \nThe strategic mobilization of humor by Hindutva (Hindu nationalist) groups online contributes to the mainstreaming of supremacist ideologies that inform extremist behavior. Analyzing the social media recontextualizations of the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition as case studies\, this talk examines how online instantiations of Islamophobic humor contribute to the Hindutva revisioning of popular memory. This talk expands the understanding of how Islamophobia is normalized through the shifting affective framing of the Babri Masjid demolition\, from shame to schadenfreude\, from tragedy to comedy\, and from a threat to Indian secularism to a necessary act of paternalistic disciplining. Studying these shifts through specific examples of Islamophobic humor builds upon previous insights into: (1) the affective regimes by which Islamophobic ideas are made palatable to a wider audience\, (2) discriminatory speech as an act of pleasure\, and (3) how both of these work toward the reworking of popular memory in service of the Hindutva political project.\n“Keep it Black\, Keep it Brief\, and Keep it Online: Lessons from a Pedagogical Influencer” with Jessica A. Rucker (University of Maryland-College Park)\nUsing Andre Brock’s methodological intervention\, Critical Technocultural Discourse Analysis (CTDA)\, in conjunction with the theories and conceptual frameworks of the Black Radical Tradition\, Black Liberation Pedagogy\, Digital Black Feminims\, Black cyberculture\, and Oscillating Networked Publics\, I ask How does Parking Lot Pimpin’ create openings for audiences to learn about Black life and both understand and take part in the Black Freedom Struggle? My findings\, which draw from Parking Lot Pimpin’ as a case study\, document how Bogues skillfully mobilizes digital tools\, platforms\, and technologies and effectively educates the public about Black life in ways that thrust forward the Black freedom struggle\, by drawing from and adding to Black archives\, and builds on scholarship from the fields of American Studies\, Black Digital World Making/Black Digital Socialities\, Black Vernacular Cultures and Oral Traditions\, and Critical Race Studies.\n\nGROUP 3: 5:20 PM - 6:00 PM\n\n“What’s in my Digital Cup?: Specialty Coffee Roasters and their Digital Discourses of Flavor” with David Tortolini (Purdue University) \nSpecialty coffee roasters in North America utilize flavor and our senses from a Western-centric perspective and reinforce Western-centric worldviews when they showcase coffees on their websites. They approach the way a cup of coffee tastes\, feels\, is described by using Western-centric ideologies and definitions. The Specialty Coffee Association’s Coffee Flavor Wheel is the primary tool used in the industry. As an accompaniment to how the flavors are shown\, you see some coffee roasters weave flavor into storytelling when they are retelling stories of adventure to describe where the coffee comes from and how they were able to source it. Thus\, coffee roasters use flavor as an identity marker and defining tool of communities and populations outside the West. \n\nIn this talk\, we will explore how colonialism has impacted our senses by examining the digitalization of flavor by specialty coffee roasters in the United States. By analyzing these digital spaces\, we will uncover how flavor is used to define and categorize communities and regions across the globe. Additionally\, we will investigate the consequences of relying on Western-centric ideologies to describe our senses in both digital and physical spaces. \"\n\"Parking Lot Pimpin’\, an online series created by Lynae Vanee Bogues\, unequivocally and unabashedly teaches about contemporary Black life and the histories that shape it by using digital tools and platforms in ways that create multiple openings for audiences to learn about\, understand\, and take part in the modern Black freedom struggle. She creates these openings by teaching in the locations and places where Black publics are\, but where accurate\, credible\, and reliable information is not always: social media platforms. In this study\,  I consider how Parking Lot Pimpin’ connects to and builds on a long history of African American history-defending\, truth-telling\, and activist memory-work and demonstrate how Bogues is an example of\, a new theoretical approach which I call\, a pedagogical influencer. A pedagogical influencer is a social media user who leverages their content knowledge and technical expertise to establish credibility across various digitally mediated spaces to educate and teach audiences about specific historical topics through a constellation of repeated words\, phrases\, concepts\, mannerisms\, and gestures within a specific economy\, industry\, or field. \n\n“Wooden Room_Wedding Room” with Hagar Masoud (Stony Brook University) \n\"Wooden Room_Wedding Room is a socially engaged\, multimedia installation project that addresses the traumatic impact of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). It sheds light on this violent practice\, which involves the non-medical\, ritual removal of external female genitalia\, often without consent\, and is widely seen as a patriarchal instrument to dominate girls' sexuality. FGM is prevalent across Africa\, Asia\, and the Middle East\, rooted in cultural beliefs about femininity and marriageability. The project aims to raise awareness about the physical and emotional pain inflicted by FGM and advocate for its end\, emphasizing the importance of protecting girls' bodily autonomy. \n\nWooden Room_Wedding Room installation reimagines the colonialized interiors of Egyptian middle-class living rooms in a gallery setting\, where narrators share their experiences of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) that occurred in such spaces. The ambiance includes serving Traditional Egyptian tea and tropical fruits.\n\n“Ambiguously Brown: Resisting the Myth of Racial Authenticity in Genetic Ancestry Testing” with S. Nisa Asgarali-Hoffman (University of Maryland-College Park)\nThis study analyzes YouTube videos made by Caribbean content creators in which they reveal the results of their direct-to-consumer ancestry tests. I analyze these reveal videos\, the user comment threads attached to them\, and the role of YouTube in hosting these videos\, to capture the popular discourse around the relationship between genetics and racial identity. By employing Critical Technocultural Discourse Analysis (CTDA)\, I seek to answer questions of how Caribbean content creators discuss racial identity\, and in particular how online discourses of race negotiate\, codify\, or disrupt neoliberal notions of authenticity.\n\nI focus on videos made by creators who specifically identify as being from the Caribbean or of the Caribbean diaspora. Through the lens of Caribbean Existentialism\, I discuss how content creators and audience discussions around racial identities coalesce into a new project of “racial formation” (Omi & Winant\, 2015). I unpack how racial authenticity is being reconstructed and deconstructed in digital spaces and interrogate the ways in which the conceptualization and mobilization of authenticity are intertwined with white supremacy.\n\nAccessibility statement: We strive to make our events accessible to all participants. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC-CM Seminar | Finding Order in Disorder Through Permutation Symmetry
DESCRIPTION:Disordered materials\, such as glasses or granular media\, exist in a rugged potential-energy landscape with a myriad of stable configurations that defy easy enumeration and characterization. Introducing physical symmetries into these systems can decrease the number of available states\, resulting in a smoother energy landscape. In this talk\, I will show how a specific type of symmetry\, namely permutation symmetry in disordered packings of soft spherical particles\, leads to remarkable order in the distribution of basin volumes on the energy landscape. Breaking this symmetry leads to additional\, distinct configurations for arranging the particles\, thus rendering the landscape more rugged. I will present a novel algorithm that uncovers signs of the regularity initially observed in the landscape with intact symmetry\, within the landscape with broken symmetry. The principles discussed in this talk are extendable to various geometrical symmetries in disordered systems.

DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will introduce  a useful way to record more information than ordinary coefficients for (co)homology by using the local coefficient system. I will first motivate this topic by comparing homology of orientable and non orientable manifolds. Next\, I will define the local coefficient system and the homology using it. After that\, I will introduce an equivalent way to define homology with local coefficients that is more algebraic and easier to compute. Finally\, I will present an application of homology of local coefficients by generalizing the Poincare duality to non orientable manifolds.

DESCRIPTION:Join Lola von Miramar\, a Puerto Rican drag queen who loves cooking\, and LaWhore Vagistan\, everyone’s favorite South Asian drag aunty\, as they discuss the radical and fascinating works of Lawrence La Fountain-Stokes (Translocas: The Politics of Puerto Rican Drag and Trans Performance\, University of Michigan Press\, 2021) and Kareem Khubchandani (Decolonize Drag\, OR Books\, 2023). Together\, they will glamorously dive deep into the pages that uncover complexities of the art of drag performance that you will not learn about on RuPaul’s Drag Race. This event will be in Japanese with English subtitles.\n\nPerformed by a single storyteller who brings multiple characters to life through gesture and voice\, rakugo is a dynamic storytelling tradition with hundreds of years of history in Japan. \n\nSanyutei Ponta (三遊亭ぽん太) was born in Japan in 1985 and graduated from the Department of Sociology at Hosei University in Tokyo. In 2015 he became a disciple of rakugo performer Sanyutei Koraku and was promoted to futatsume\, the second-highest rank for rakugo performers\, in 2018. His stage name\, Sanyutei Ponta II\, comes from Sanyutei Ponta I\, who was a disciple of rakugo master Sanyutei Encho I\, an influential performer of the late nineteenth century. Ponta revived this stage name for the first time in over 100 years and is an up-and-coming rakugo performer.\n\n*This event is hosted by the Ann Arbor District Library and cosponsored by the Japan Business Society of Detroit and the U-M Center for Japanese Studies. *

DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan School of Music\, Theatre & Dance and the Department of Dance present *Exultant Existence*\, a Bachelor of Fine Arts senior dance concert featuring works by Cristina Benn\, Reina Kitasato\, and Annabella Vidrio. \n\nFree tickets are available at the door starting one hour before the performance.\n\nCristina Benn’s piece *Gratitude* follows a journey in self acceptance\, thanking all those before who have guided her to where she is today. *Thyself*\, continues the journey of self-acceptance\, celebrating the beauty of accepting oneself and embracing all of who you are. The piece is lively and fierce\, incorporating elements of Afro-Caribbean styles with hip hop and femme dance.\n\nReina Kitasato’s *I Offer Prosperity and Eternal Life*\, focuses on the concept of the self in relation to others through the lens of nature. The different stages of life and the evolution of one’s self is shown in the dance. Kitasato’s solo\, *Unseen*\, explores her multicultural background and the difficulties posed by having to navigate two communities while maintaining a sense of self. This is conveyed through a unique storyline and detailed movements.\n\nAnnabella Vidrio’s *Reasons I Now Understand* explores themes of cross-cultural communication\, systems of love\, and acceptance of the unknown. This piece\, comprising both her solo and her group choreography\, is largely inspired by her upbringing in a vibrant Mexican-American household and throughout the dance\, Vidrio incorporates modern techniques and traditional Mexican folkloric dancing. The work is supported in part through the School of Music\, Theatre & Dance’s EXCEL Enterprise Fund and the Arts Initiative's Student Mini Grant.
