DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Modernist Glass from the Polish Past
DESCRIPTION:The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass)\, the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. We are grateful to them for making this remarkable exhibit possible at CCPS and WCEE.\n\nOrganized by the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies\, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Penny W. SUMMARY:Exhibition:CES Exhibition. Camera as Passport: The Ship of Photographers
DESCRIPTION:Starting in 1933 when Hitler and the Nazis came to power\, a cadre of European Jews—German\, Polish\, Hungarian\, Austrian\, French—discovered that a camera could be their passport\, first out of Germany and then out of Europe. Some of these women and men had been planning one type of career—lawyer\, journalist\, painter\, musician—but then realized that they needed to find another way to earn a living. Taking photographs presented a sufficiently malleable opportunity that not only allowed them to leave Germany and then Europe but also to have a means to sustain themselves in foreign countries where they did not necessarily speak the language.\n   \n   They did\, however\, mobilize the visual language of photography. For a number of these figures\, forced migration became an asset during the golden age of photojournalism wherein their portable services were employed to supply picture stories on the move and around the world. Many of these Jews became influential photographers\, shaping how their contemporaries saw the world. Looking back on their work\, we can see how they have influenced our understanding of the modern world even as we can recognize their photographs as a significant component of modern Jewish visual culture.\n   \n   Of the dozens of photographers who fled Europe\, eight escaped on a single ship. The S. S. Winnipeg sailed from Marseille\, France on May 7\, 1941. Germany had already conquered both eastern and western Europe and was poised to invade the Soviet Union. The United States was not yet in the war. Among the 750 refugees aboard were photographers from Hungary\, Belgium\, France\, and Germany: Ilse Bing\, Josef Breitenbach\, Boris Lipnitsky\, Charles Leirens\, Yolla Niclas\, Fred Stein\, Monie Tannen\, and Ylla (Camilla Henriette Koffler). During lifeboat drills\, they discovered each other. Some of them narrowly escaped Vichy France under the auspices of the American journalist Varian Fry and the New York-based Emergency Rescue Committee that helped so many Jewish and anti-Fascist artists get out of Europe in the nick of time.\n   \n   This exhibit introduces the University of Michigan to this intrepid group as exemplary case studies of the wide range of European photographers who used their cameras as passports to other worlds. It focuses first on their European experiences pre-emigration before turning to their escape from Europe on the S. S. Winnipeg (with three of them taking photos on board the ship). The exhibit concludes with examples of some of their initial photographic reactions to the new world\, seeing it through European eyes.\n   \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Propositions to Progress: A Working Atlas of the Global South
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, maps have served as a panoptic technology\, assisting imperial powers in governance\, discipline\, and control. In this exhibit\, internationally renowned Filipino artist Cian Dayrit acts as a counter-cartographer\, reclaiming mapmaking as an emancipatory activity.\n\nDayrit’s artworks\, embroidered on textiles or painted over collages of colonial-era maps\, plot the extraction of natural resources\, land grabbing\, and dispossession and displacement in his native Philippines. At the same time\, their resistant lines summon new imaginaries out of the overlaps between places and memories.\n\nDayrit’s practice is critically and practically informed by the narratives of Filipino communities. Items exhibited alongside his artwork are the result of map-drawing workshops the artist has convened with rural\, urban\, and indigenous communities across the Philippines. Propositions to Progress invites you to engage in the collaborative endeavor to activate alternative territories from the ground up.\n\nCian Dayrit is an interdisciplinary artist exploring colonialism and ethnography\, archaeology\, history\, and mythology. Dayrit subverts the language of the state\, museum\, and military to visualize the contradictions on which these institutions are built. He studied at the University of the Philippines.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibit is an extension of Souq Stories (https://souqstories.insaniyyat.org/)\, which was displayed in 2021 in all seven of the historic markets it depicts in Gaza\, Nazareth\, Acre\, Nablus\, Jerusalem\, Khalil\, and Jaffa. Its youth group organizers aimed to bolster Palestinian unity across the systemic barriers — colonial divides\, military checkpoints\, walls\, etc. — that fragment the lives of people living in Palestine. \n\nSouq Stories: Gaza Lives brings us to present-day Gaza\, sharing the stories of\, and images captured by\, young journalists and photographers who have continued to document the realities of life in Palestine. It also honors one among them\, Fouad Abu Khammash\, who was killed in January 2024 in an Israeli bomb attack on Gaza.\n\n< The exhibit includes images of people suffering the aftermath of the ongoing violence. >\n\nThis exhibit was curated by Souq Stories team members Shareef Sarhan and Waed Abbas in partnership with U-M students Amir Marshi\, Zainab Hakim\, Mariam Odeh\, and Vivian M. Nguyen. It’s offered in conjunction with this year’s Palestine Awareness Week\, an annual series of educational events related to Palestinian history\, culture\, and politics. Both Malallah and Karim were significantly influenced by their mentors during and after their training in Iraq\, and continue to share their work and ideas with a new generation today.\n\nIn the United States\, Iraq is typically spoken about in a passive position: colonized\, under despotic rule\, occupied. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Garden Repairs
DESCRIPTION:About the installation:\nGarden Repairs is an installation of paper textiles that loosely narrate the life cycle of plants. It considers the process of germination as a site for the cross-pollination of ideas from diverse disciplines around the future of the built environment. \n\nAbout the artist:\nSusan Goethel Campbell creates multi-disciplinary work that considers the contemporary landscape to be an emergent system where nature\, culture\, and the engineered environment are indistinguishable from one another. Central to her practice is the collection\, documentation\, and observation of seasonal change and ephemera in both natural and artificial environments. Her work is realized in several formats\, including installation\, video\, prints\, and drawings\, as well as projects that engage communities to look at local and global environments.\n\nCampbell earned an MFA in printmaking from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her work has been exhibited internationally in Belgium\, Germany\, Switzerland\, and Slovenia and nationally throughout the US\, including the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, Queens Art Museum\, Crystal Bridges Museum\, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit\, Grand Rapids Art Museum\, the Detroit Institute of Arts\, The Drawing Center\, and The International Print Center New York. In 2009 she was one of 18 artists selected for the inaugural Kresge Artist Fellowship.\n\nCampbell has been awarded residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts\, the Flemish Center for Graphic Arts\, the Jentel Foundation\, Beisinghoff Print Residency\, and the Print Research Institute of North Texas. She taught studio art for 15 years at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit and has been a visiting artist in numerous institutions in the United States and abroad. Her work is in the collection of the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, New York Public Library\, Detroit Institute of Arts\, Toledo Museum of Art\, and the University of Michigan Special Collections Library.\n\nThis project is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities' multi-year High Stakes Art initiative.

DESCRIPTION:On display at Lane Hall\, Rogério M. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States\,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \n\nUsing autoethnography\, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Marília\,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead\,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas\, gender states\, and his life experience—a story of the struggles\, fears\, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm\,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto’s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he\, a queer immigrant\, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials\, images\, and texts from \"Marília\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Collected are portrayals of Pinto’s gender states\, gender confusion\, gender embodiments\, gender doubt\, and reactions to gender stigma. \n\nRogério M. Pinto (Brazilian\, American\, b. 1965\, Belo Horizonte\, Brazil) is a University Diversity Social Transformation Professor\; Berit Ingersoll-Dayton Collegiate Professor of Social Work\; and Professor of Theatre and Drama\, School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, at the University of Michigan. Pinto uses art-based methods to conduct community-engaged research in the United States and Brazil.\n\nThe photographs used in \"My Gender States\" are by Emerson Granillo (American\, b. 1987)\; David Newton (American\, b. 1993)\; and Nicholas Williams (American\, b. 1994). The \"Realm\" assemblages featured in \"My Gender States\" were conceived by Pinto and designed by him\, in collaboration with Sarah Tanner. \n\n\"My Gender States\" is on display in the Lane Hall Exhibit Space (first floor\, 204 S State St) from January 23\, to August 13\, 2024. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Orson Welles as Family Man: Son\, Husband\, Father
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit provides a unique glimpse into the actor/director Orson Welles’ private life. Unlike previous U-M Library exhibits that focused on the artist at work\, this display shows him in informal and familial environments\, revealing a depth and complexity of character that are often overshadowed by his fame and professional achievements. The photographs and documents displayed showcase a variety of emotional tones — warmth\, humor\, tenderness\, and passion. Candid and relaxed more than posed\, they are similar to most people's pictures in old family albums.\n\nCulled from the Orson Welles-Beatrice Welles materials that are part of the Mavericks & Makers collection within the U-M Library’s Special Collections Research Center\, each photo or letter tells a story of a connection Welles held dearly. The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s\, when Welles was a teenager\, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s\, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife\, Paola Mori. \n\nIt should be noted that Welles’s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages\, including the Welles-Feder Collection and the Wilson-Welles Collection. The items on display here were saved by his third and final child\, Beatrice Welles\, and reflect her childhood memories of her parents.\n\nThe exhibit is available during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://umlib.us/hatchergalleryexhibits).

DESCRIPTION:In Andrea Carlson Future Cache\, a 40-foot-tall memorial wall towers over visitors\, commemorating the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians who were violently burned from their land in Northern Michigan on October 15\, 1900. DESCRIPTION:Care in Uncertain Times\n \nAs crises of public health\, economic instability\, authoritarian regimes\, racial injustice\, and climate change spread around the globe\, millions are experiencing distress\, conflict\, uncertainty\, and vulnerability. This troubling combination of experiences is nothing new for Cambodians. Between 1975-1979\, when the Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia\, about a quarter of the country’s populations died of infectious diseases\, weapon wounds\, and malnutrition.\n \nThis exhibition brings together more than 80 works of art spanning a millennium to present how the visual culture of Cambodia and its diaspora has evolved in the face of cultural upheaval. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Product Bans as Protectionism: The Maggi Scare
DESCRIPTION:Governments can implement industrial policy by withdrawing operational permits from specific firms. These actions\, in the form of product or firm bans\, may affect market competition and possibly the demand for the whole product category. We analyze the ban of Nestlé's Maggi\, the largest producer of instant noodles in India\, for alleged non-compliance with health safety standards. Maggi returned to the stores six months later when The High Court at Bombay ruled the ban unjustified. We show the presence of negative spillovers to competitors\, which led them to decrease their sales in the first months of the ban. We also document substantial heterogeneity in consumers' responses to the ban according to political preferences and government alignment. Using a structural model of consumer and firm behavior\, we separately identify demand and supply responses to the ban. Through counterfactuals\, we show that the ban had a substantial impact on consumer surplus. Further\, 45 percent of the overall effect was due to spillovers of the ban to the entire instant noodles category\, while the rest resulted from changes in market structure. \n\n\nThis talk is presented by the Applied Microeconomics/Industrial Organization Seminar\, sponsored by the Department of Economics with generous gifts given through the Jean Coven Speakers Fund in Economics and the Economics Strategic Fund.

DESCRIPTION:The Reframing Our Language Experience (ROLE) Collective was co-founded by Dr. Savithry Namboodiripad (U-M Linguistics) and Dr. Ethan Kutlu (University of Iowa). Currently\, the collective has over 50 scholars. \n\nThe 1st ROLE Collective Symposium will take place this year online on April 12th (keynotes and short talks) and April 19th (workshop). The theme of this symposium is “Rejecting Harmful Native Speaker/Signer Ideologies.”\n\nStructure of the Symposium\nThe one-week difference between Day 1 and Day 2 is to ensure that any attendees who may not have been able to attend some or all of the talks on Day 1 will have enough time to watch the videos and be prepared for the second day. In addition\, though all of the short talks will be uploaded online only\, and not broadcast synchronously on Day 1\, there will be a synchronous discussion of these talks on Day 2.\n\nDay 2 will begin with a structured discussion of the short talks. Then\, participants will split up into at least 5 themed breakout rooms to work together to discuss how to address harmful notions of language in various contexts. These contexts include research practices (e.g.\, how to ethically and accurately capture differences in language experience\, how to implement conceptual changes via novel statistical methods\, how to recruit participants without relying on the native speaker/signer construct)\, clinical assessments (e.g.\, creating resources about how language ideologies can lead to misdiagnoses of individuals whose language practices are marginalized\, and advocating for the further development of assessment materials which are inclusive of a broader range of language/varieties)\, admissions processes (e.g.\, creating white papers for graduate and undergraduate programs to eschew native speaker/signer ideologies in assessments of the language of incoming students)\, evaluation of academic language (e.g.\, creating guidelines for editors and reviewers to assess the language of submitted manuscript/grant application without relying on the native speaker construct)\, communicating with the public (e.g.\, creating public-facing information for the affirmation of all kinds of language experience)\, and whatever other priorities are identified by participants – participants’ priorities will be identified via a survey distributed after the first symposium day and before the workshop day.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Consider a model trained with 𝑝 parameters from 𝑛 independent and identically distributed observations. To assess a data point’s impact on the model\, we remove it from the dataset and aim to understand the model’s behavior when trained on the remaining data. This scenario is relevant in various classical and modern applications\, including risk estimation\, outlier detection\, machine unlearning\, and data valuation. Conventional approaches involve training the model on the remaining data\, but these can be computationally demanding. Consequently\, researchers often resort to approximate methods. This talk highlights that in high-dimensional settings\, where 𝑝 is either larger than 𝑛 or at the same order\, many approximation methods may prove ineffective. We will present and analyze an accurate approximation method tailored for high-dimensional regimes\, elucidating the conditions for its accuracy. In the concluding part of the presentation\, time permitting\, we will briefly discuss some of the unresolved issues in this domain.

You’re Going to Need to Get Critical\n\nAbstract: \nCritical theories — think\, intersectionality\, critical race theory\, structural racism\, for example — are those that expose\, interrogate\, and challenge power by highlighting the social\, structural\, political\, and economic determinants of health. Critical approaches offer a stark contrast to the primarily individualistic\, biomedical\, psychosocial theories and frameworks that still dominate most doctoral social and behavioral science programs. With a handful of exceptions\, people’s thoughts\, beliefs\, attitudes\, and behaviors about HIV testing\, condom use\, PrEP\, and HAART adherence remain the primary focus of doctoral-level HIV education. Structural and political determinants of health\, and the constraints they impose on the ability of groups historically marginalized at multiple intersections (e.g.\, racialized/ minoritized\, sexual and/or gender minority\, and low SES) to engage in health promoting behaviors are rarely a focus of doctoral training. But they should be. The indomitable Audre Lorde admonished that the “Master’s tools will not dismantle the Master’s house.” This is also true of conventional approaches to HIV prevention and treatment research. More than four decades into the HIV epidemic and despite PrEP and HAART\, HIV still disproportionately affects Black and Latino gay\, bisexual\, and other men who have sex with men\, transgender and nonbinary people\, and Black and Latina women who have sex with men. These intersectional HIV inequities spotlight a dire need for a more critical approach to Ending the HIV Epidemic\, than the conventional theoretical approaches used thus far. DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... DESCRIPTION:This is part of our monthly seminar series at the RMC. \n\nPreview: Museums play a pivotal role in scientific research by granting access to vast collections of biological specimens. A few years ago\, the cost of sequencing genomes was prohibitively expensive. However\, with advancements in technology and economies of scale\, the prices have significantly dropped. As a result\, we are now able to sequence the genomes of hundreds of species using techniques such as exon capture\, genome skimming\, and soon chromosome-level genomes. Our current challenge lies in bridging the gap between traditional museum collections and modern genetic research. This integration opens new avenues for scientific discovery and conservation efforts\, ultimately contributing to our understanding of biodiversity and ecosystem conservation.\n\nIn this presentation\, I'll take you on a journey through my career\, highlighting the pivotal role of museum personnel and museum specimens in shaping my interdisciplinary research program focused on the evolution and systematics of marine fishes\, with an emphasis on gadiforms and other commercially important species. Utilizing voucher specimens and associated materials such as tissue samples and otoliths\, I am investigating how evolutionary patterns and the underwater environment influence the genomic diversity and connectivity of marine fishes. These findings are communicated to management agencies and other stakeholders\, providing valuable insights for monitoring and conservation projects. Additionally\, I will emphasize how my research intertwines with outreach and education efforts\, aiming to not only advance scientific knowledge but also foster a sense of stewardship for our oceans within and beyond the museum walls.

DESCRIPTION:The Medical Arts Program and the Helen Zell Writers' Program are delighted to co-host Dr. Christine Montrose for a very special lecture on Friday\, April 19th.\n\n \"The Story is at the Center: The Shared Territory of Writing and Medicine\" will be free and open to the public\, in person (in The Robert Hayden Conference Room\, Angell Hall #3222). \n\nA 2015 Guggenheim Fellow in Nonfiction\, Dr. Christine Montross is Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She is a practicing inpatient psychiatrist and performs forensic psychiatric examinations. She completed medical school and residency training at Brown University\, where she received the Isaac Ray Award in Psychiatry and the Martin B. Keller Outstanding Brown Psychiatry Resident Award.\n\nShe received her undergraduate degrees and a Master of Fine Arts in poetry from the University of Michigan\, where she also taught writing classes as a lecturer following graduation. She was born and raised in Indianapolis.\n\nDr. Montross's first book\, Body of Work\, was named an Editors' Choice by The New York Times and one of The Washington Post's best nonfiction books of 2007. Her second book\, Falling Into the Fire\, was named a New Yorker Book to Watch Out For. Her latest book\, Waiting for an Echo\, was named a New York Times Book to Watch For\, a Time Magazine Book to Read in July and an Amazon.com Best Book of the Month. She has also written for many national publications including The New York Times\, The New England Journal of Medicine\, The Washington Post Book World\, Good Housekeeping and O\, The Oprah Magazine.\n\nDr. Montross has been named a 2017-2018 Faculty Fellow at the Cogut Center for the Humanities\, a 2010 MacColl Johnson Fellow in Poetry\, and the winner of the 2009 Eugene and Marilyn Glick Emerging Indiana Authors Award. DESCRIPTION:Graduate student Carson Landry performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Earplugs are available from the carillonist upon request. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Lurie Carillon\, an instrument of 60 bells with the lowest bell (bourdon) weighing 6 tons.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Lurie Carillon every weekday that classes are in session. During these recitals\, visitors may take the elevator to level 2 to view the largest bells\, or to level 3 to see the carillonist performing. (Visitors subject to acrophobia are recommended to visit level 2 only.) An optional spiral stairway between levels 2 and 3 allows for up-close views of some of the largest bells.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:U.S. and Canadian Higher Education Protest and University and Police Responses\, 2012-2018
DESCRIPTION:This paper describes the protest movements that roiled university and college campuses in the United States and Canada in the 2010s and key strategies used by university administrations and police to manage them. It draws on an innovative new dataset\, the Higher Ed Protest Dataset\, which combines machine learning and sociological hand-coding of more than 16\,000 campus newspaper articles. We identify 5\,488 distinct U.S. and Canadian higher ed protest events involving 585 universities and colleges between 2012 and 2018. The goals of the paper are twofold: to characterize major patterns in social movement activity in higher education and to develop a multi- institutional framework of higher education politics that attends to both protest and protest management. In both countries\, much higher ed protest centers university administration and governance. The frequency of protest is patterned by the academic calendar\, which facilitates an essential strategy university leaders use to manage protest: wait until the summer. Other recurring higher ed protest issues differ by country: in the United States\, anti-racism\, labor\, and national politics of Trump and police violence and\, in Canada\, public university tuition and labor conditions. A few issues are the focus of major protest waves. Likewise\, administrations and police tend to avoid direct intervention during protest events\, with some outlier cases such as the 2012 “Maple Spring” tuition protests in Montreal and protest-counterprotest encounters involving Trump’s presidency and the far right. Findings contribute to the critical sociological study of social movements at the intersection of higher education\, organizations\, and policing.

DESCRIPTION:\"Novel developments in incretin-based medications for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity\"\n\nMichael Nauck\, MD\nHead of Clinical Research\nDiabetes Division of St. Josef-Hospital (Ruhr-University Bochum)\nBochum\, North Rhine-Westphalia\, Germany\n\nProfessor Michael Nauck\, MD has a particular research interest in the role of gastrointestinal peptide hormones (incretins: glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide\, GIP\, and glucagon-like peptide-1\, GLP-1) in the physiological regulation of metabolism\, in the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes. He has contributed pivotal studies proving a therapeutic potential of GLP-1 in type 2 diabetes. In addition\, Professor Nauck has also contributed his expertise to the development of incretin-based glucose-lowering medications such as GLP-1 receptor agonists and inhibitors of dipeptidyl peptidase-4. \n\nThis seminar is supported by EWCDI in partnership with the MDRC\, MNORC\, and MCDTR.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar:  Solving Large Linear Systems Without Constructing a Preconditioner
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:  Solving systems of linear equations has numerous applications across many areas\, from data science and machine learning\, to scientific computing\, engineering and more. When these systems are too large to solve directly\, iterative refinement methods such as conjugate gradient have proven to be a powerful alternative. The computational cost of these methods can be significantly affected by a problem-dependent condition number\, which is often addressed by combining the iterative solver with a preconditioner\, i.e.\, an easy to invert approximation of the original system. However\, constructing a good preconditioner can still be very expensive\, which leads to an undesirable trade-off between the cost of preconditioning and the cost of solving the linear system.\n\nIn this talk\, I will present new stochastic iterative methods for solving linear systems based on the so-called Sketch-and-Project paradigm\, which can reduce the condition number of the system without having to precondition it. This approach is based on the following phenomenon: Whenever the spectral structure of a linear system is amenable to constructing a strong preconditioner via low-rank matrix approximation\, we can design a Sketch-and-Project solver that will implicitly take advantage of this to find the solution faster. In particular\, I will show how this leads to solving an n x n linear system with at most k large (outlying) singular values in ~O( n^2 + n k^2 ) arithmetic operations\, which is faster than the ~O( n^2 k ) cost of constructing a good preconditioner for this system.\n\n\nContact:  Robert Krasny

Researchers have proposed various ecological and evolutionary hypotheses explaining this pattern\, but such explanations are contingent upon the absence of Paranthropus being a \"true\" pattern. Observed absence\, however\, is consistent with two mutually exclusive outcomes: Paranthropus never occupied the Afar\, or it did but just has not been found yet. For my talk\, I introduce a model that is able to place probabilities on these two outcomes to determine whether observed Paranthropus absence in the Afar reflects true absence.\"

DESCRIPTION:Faltings' theorem states that an algebraic curve of genus at least 2 over a number field has only finitely many rational points. This striking result demonstrates how geometry can influence arithmetic properties. In this talk\, I will present Bombieri's simplification of Vojta's proof. The key idea is to embed the curve into its Jacobian and study the height pairing on it. We will employ techniques from diophantine approximation to prove Vojta's inequality\, which imposes a stringent condition on rational points.

DESCRIPTION:Climate change poses numerous global challenges. Tackling them will require responses at the level of policy\, culture\, and technology1. One of the most valuable tools available has the advantage of almost 4 billion years of modification and fine-tuning via evolution: microbes. By taking advantage of microbiological processes\, we can build technologies that will revolutionize our economies. One such technology is microbial electrosynthesis (MES). MES takes advantage of bacteria that consume electrons via a process called extracellular electron uptake (EEU). By feeding microbes electricity\, we can produce a range of bio-commodities such as bioplastic and biofuel using substrates like organic carbon-rich wastes or even carbon dioxide (CO2). However\, before such a technological feat is scalable\, we must understand the fundamental mechanisms at play and develop proof-of-concept prototypes. Only then can we design systems capable of economically feasible\, industrial scale bioproduction. Here\, we discuss the underlying biology\, highlight our lab’s work pertaining to EEU and MES\, and outline future directions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:NERS Colloquium: Legal and Policy Drivers for Advanced Nuclear Development and Deployment
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nCOP 28 has been referred to as the Nuclear COP with delegations from more than 20 countries joining a pledge to triple nuclear power by 2050. Earlier in 2023\, the G7 ministers of climate\, energy\, and environment issued a communication committing to maximize use of existing reactors\, work collaboratively to develop secure supply chains for fuel\, technology\, and human resources\, and to working domestically and with partner countries to build advanced reactors. These policies forecast rapid growth of nuclear in the US and partner countries over the coming decades. This presentation covers global policies related to nuclear as well as the programs and legislation in the US and EU intended to accelerate progress towards these goals and the social and legal obstacles to their attainment.\n \nBio\nTara Righetti is the Occidental Chair of Energy and Environmental Policies at the University of Wyoming. She holds appointments in the School of Energy Resources\, and College of Law\, and the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources. She is also the co-director of the nuclear energy research center. Professor Righetti's research focuses on property law and administrative regulation of the energy and decarbonization sectors. Her most recent interests include research into heat systems\, licensing processes for advanced reactors\, and uses of pore space in federal lands for carbon sequestration. She was recently appointed to the White House Federal Lands CCS Permitting Task Force and is a member of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to the International Standardization Organization technical committee for CCUS.  From 2021-2022 Professor Righetti served as a Fulbright Research Scholar at the Université de Lille\, in France. She lives in Laramie\, Wyoming with her three children.
