Scouring flea markets, antique shops, and websites, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. It also honors one among them, Fouad Abu Khammash, who was killed in January 2024 in an Israeli bomb attack on Gaza.\r\n\r\n< The exhibit includes images of people suffering the aftermath of the ongoing violence. >\r\n\r\nThis exhibit was curated by Souq Stories team members Shareef Sarhan and Waed Abbas in partnership with U-M students Amir Marshi, Zainab Hakim, Mariam Odeh, and Vivian M. It considers the process of germination as a site for the cross-pollination of ideas from diverse disciplines around the future of the built environment. \r\n\r\nAbout the artist:\r\nSusan Goethel Campbell creates multi-disciplinary work that considers the contemporary landscape to be an emergent system where nature, culture, and the engineered environment are indistinguishable from one another. Central to her practice is the collection, documentation, and observation of seasonal change and ephemera in both natural and artificial environments. Her work is realized in several formats, including installation, video, prints, and drawings, as well as projects that engage communities to look at local and global environments.\r\n\r\nCampbell earned an MFA in printmaking from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her work has been exhibited internationally in Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, and Slovenia and nationally throughout the US, including the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Queens Art Museum, Crystal Bridges Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, Grand Rapids Art Museum, the Detroit Institute of Arts, The Drawing Center, and The International Print Center New York. In 2009 she was one of 18 artists selected for the inaugural Kresge Artist Fellowship.\r\n\r\nCampbell has been awarded residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts, the Flemish Center for Graphic Arts, the Jentel Foundation, Beisinghoff Print Residency, and the Print Research Institute of North Texas. She taught studio art for 15 years at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit and has been a visiting artist in numerous institutions in the United States and abroad. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \r\n\r\nUsing autoethnography, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Mar\u00edlia,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas, gender states, and his life experience\u2014a story of the struggles, fears, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto\u2019s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he, a queer immigrant, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials, images, and texts from \"Mar\u00edlia\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Collected are portrayals of Pinto\u2019s gender states, gender confusion, gender embodiments, gender doubt, and reactions to gender stigma. \r\n\r\nRog\u00e9rio M. Pinto (Brazilian, American, b. 1965, Belo Horizonte, Brazil) is a University Diversity Social Transformation Professor; Berit Ingersoll-Dayton Collegiate Professor of Social Work; and Professor of Theatre and Drama, School of Music, Theatre & Dance, at the University of Michigan. Pinto uses art-based methods to conduct community-engaged research in the United States and Brazil.\r\n\r\nThe photographs used in \"My Gender States\" are by Emerson Granillo (American, b. 1987); David Newton (American, b. 1993); and Nicholas Williams (American, b. 1994). The \"Realm\" assemblages featured in \"My Gender States\" were conceived by Pinto and designed by him, in collaboration with Sarah Tanner. \r\n\r\n\"My Gender States\" is on display in the Lane Hall Exhibit Space (first floor, 204 S State St) from January 23, to August 13, 2024. Nevertheless, the complexity of network data continues to pose new challenges in modeling, theory, and inference.\r\n\r\nSpecifically, this thesis studies three such important problems that are related to the network latent space models. In Chapter 2, we study the problem of jointly modeling network data with high-dimensional node covariates, a multimodal data integration setting that has become increasingly popular in contemporary network applications. For this, we propose a novel joint latent space model with shared and individual factors, and then develop an estimation and inference procedure for identifying the overlapped structure of latent factors. In Chapter 3, we focus on the uncertainty quantification of then maximum likelihood estimators of network latent space models, which is a critical problem for downstream inference tasks of network data. Employing a novel theoretical analysis framework with the Lagrange-adjust Hessian analysis, we establish the consistency properties and asymptotic distributions of maximum likelihood estimators. The flexibility of this framework further enables us to study the problem with edge sparsity and dependency settings. In Chapter 4, we explore the geometric effect of latent space curvature and theoretically justify the importance of estimating the curvature when embedding network data. We thus propose a hyperbolic network latent space model with an adjustable curvature parameter, demonstrating its superiority through simulation and applied statistical learning tasks. Yet the share of climate-enhancing innovations in total patents, after booming for two decades, has seized to grow since the Global Financial Crisis. We develop a quantitative framework in which firms direct innovation towards green or polluting technologies, and become better at innovating in technologies that they have previously succeeded in. This causes mature, incumbent firms to predominantly innovate in polluting technologies. When green technologies become more attractive, e.g. due to a carbon tax, young firms are responsible for a large share of the transition to green innovation. As young firms are financially constrained, a credit shock harms their innovation, bringing the green transition to a halt. We validate the theory with two empirical exercises. First, we use micro data to provide causal evidence that tight credit disproportionately affects green innovation, through its effect on young firms. Second, we show that contractionary monetary policy shocks have a significantly larger effect on green patenting than non-green patenting, in line with the model. Quantifying the model, we find that tight credit can explain around 60% of the recent slowdown in the rise of green patenting. This translates to a cumulative increase in emissions by half a year of the initial (high pollution) steady state.\r\n\r\nThis talk is presented by the Macroeconomics Seminar, sponsored by the A Zoom option is also provided.\r\nSeminar Description:\r\nUltracold molecules have promising applications in the fields of quantum computing and simulation of many-body systems. Central to these applications is the ability to detect and manipulate the quantum state of individual molecules. I will describe the development of a novel apparatus for imaging single diatomic molecules in an ultracold gas prepared in the ground electronic, rovibrational and hyperfine state, performed at Princeton University. We used this capability to measure quantum correlations due to the bosonic statistics of the molecules or due to entanglement mediated by dipolar interactions. As an example of a potential application, I will discuss our study of out-of-equilibrium dynamics in tunable quantum spin models and measurements of the evolution of spatial correlations during the ensuing thermalization process.\r\n Looking ahead, I will describe efforts for next-generation molecular gas experiments at the University of Chicago involving potassium-silver molecules.
