And yet, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.\u00a0\u00a0\n \nIn this online exhibition, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum\u2019s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. Already known for years for her songwriting, Kitty\u2019s visibility escalated to a much bigger world when she wrote a song called \u2018There Are No Words\u2019 on September 11, 2001. In addition to the Emmy Kitty received for the song, it\u2019s been featured in a documentary, which led to her singing it live at the Dedication of the Pentagon 9\/11 Memorial in 2008 \u2013 an experience that she calls \u201cprofound.\u201d\r\n\r\nGrowing up in a large, creative family outside of Detroit, Kitty started \u2018making up songs\u2019 and playing the piano at a young age, then graduated to the guitar in high school, when she began going to coffeehouses and open mic nights, bringing the guitar and her own songs.
