In honor of the artist, his wife Meighen Jackson has assembled this body of work for this exhibition.\r\n\r\nA 1960\u2019s graduate of Monteith College at Wayne State, Bill saw himself not as a storyteller nor a documentarian, but as a photographer seeking images with the power and creativity of late 20th century painting and music making.\r\n\r\nBill Jackson\u2019s work is represented nationally by Walter Wickiser Gallery in Manhattan and regionally by M Contemporary in Ferndale, MI. An exploration of encounters real and imagined by local artist, Nicole Ray. \r\n\r\nBio\r\n\r\nNicole Ray is an artist and illustrator living in Brighton, Michigan. She grew up in a small beach town in New York with her toes deep in the sand and her head buried in books. Nicole creates a whimsical line of art prints and paper goods under the name Sloe Gin Fizz.\r\n\r\nFrom quirky animal and vegetable characters to nostalgia-filled interiors and calming views of nature, Nicole\u2019s hand-drawn scenes are highly accessible, infused with a playful sense of humor and a strong narrative quality. \r\n\r\nNicole holds a BFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts, as well as a BA in History from Trinity College in Hartford, CT. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don\u2019t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.\u00a0\u00a0\n \nIn this online exhibition, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum\u2019s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. The effect on people who identify as LGBTQ is profound: a lifespan that is up to 12 years shorter than straight people. In 2023, more than 75 anti-LGBTQ bills have been signed into law to legalize discrimination against LGBTQ people. In 2021 \u2014 in the midst of the pandemic \u2014 more than half (56 per cent) of lesbian, gay, bisexual and queer people experienced discrimination from a healthcare professional. For the first time in history, the Human Rights Campaign has declared a state of emergency for LGBTQ people. \u201cJust Us\u201d is a film about the challenges LGBTQ people face on a daily basis.
