Digital optimism is the recognition that there are elements of life that vivify and energize in the here and the now, despite and amidst the digital purgatories that we endure. Sometimes that energy is found in stillness; sometimes in refusal; and sometimes in moments of catharsis or joy. This panel will explore the concept of digital optimism as it appears in DISCO\u2019s collaborative writing and work together.\r\n\r\n10:30 am - 11:45 am\r\nDigital Frictions with Remi Yergeau, David Adelman, Jeff Nagy, Aimi Hamraie, Jaipreet Virdi, and Mara Mills\r\nIn their manifesto on crip technoscience, Kelly Fritsch and Aimi Hamraie (2019) impress upon us that access production is a \u201cfrictional process,\u201d one that requires \u201cacknowledging that science and technology can be used to both produce and dismantle injustice.\u201d This roundtable explores the frictional intimacies, practices, and material conditions of what it means to do the digital. In \"My Gender States,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \r\n\r\nUsing autoethnography, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Mar\u00edlia,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas, gender states, and his life experience\u2014a story of the struggles, fears, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto\u2019s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he, a queer immigrant, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials, images, and texts from \"Mar\u00edlia\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Collected are portrayals of Pinto\u2019s gender states, gender confusion, gender embodiments, gender doubt, and reactions to gender stigma. \r\n\r\nRog\u00e9rio M. Pinto (Brazilian, American, b. 1965, Belo Horizonte, Brazil) is a University Diversity Social Transformation Professor; Berit Ingersoll-Dayton Collegiate Professor of Social Work; and Professor of Theatre and Drama, School of Music, Theatre & Dance, at the University of Michigan. Pinto uses art-based methods to conduct community-engaged research in the United States and Brazil.\r\n\r\nThe photographs used in \"My Gender States\" are by Emerson Granillo (American, b. 1987); David Newton (American, b. 1993); and Nicholas Williams (American, b. 1994). Nicole creates a whimsical line of art prints and paper goods under the name Sloe Gin Fizz.\r\n\r\nFrom quirky animal and vegetable characters to nostalgia-filled interiors and calming views of nature, Nicole\u2019s hand-drawn scenes are highly accessible, infused with a playful sense of humor and a strong narrative quality. \r\n\r\nNicole holds a BFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts, as well as a BA in History from Trinity College in Hartford, CT. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don\u2019t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.\u00a0\u00a0\n \nIn this online exhibition, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum\u2019s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices.
