SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC-CM Seminar | Watching Atoms Move With Terahertz Scanning Probe Microscopy
DESCRIPTION:The terahertz range of the electromagnetic spectrum hosts material excitations that are particularly important for nanotechnology\, such as the collective motion of charges\, spins\, and ions. These excitations are often studied with terahertz time-domain spectroscopy\, which directly measures the oscillating electric field of a terahertz light pulse and relates it to key material processes through the light-matter interaction. Coherent detection of terahertz fields can even reveal dynamics faster than a terahertz cycle [1\,2]. However\, conventional terahertz time-domain spectroscopy measurements average the sample response over macroscopic length scales due to the diffraction limit. Experimental techniques have been developed based on scanning probes to improve the spatial resolution of terahertz science [3] \, as visualized in Figure 1. On the far left of Figure 1\, lightwave-driven scanning tunneling microscopy [4-7] reaches the atomic limit by coherently controlling quantum tunneling of electrons between a tip and sample with the oscillating terahertz field. At present\, it is the only experimental technique capable of simultaneous atomic spatial resolution and ultrafast temporal resolution. \n\nIn this talk\, I will first introduce the central concepts of lightwave-driven microscopy and then show how it can be used to perform atomic-scale terahertz time-domain spectroscopy 8 \, visualize electronic wavefunctions in single molecules [5\,7]\, and even control topological phase transitions in materials.\n\nReferences\n[1] M. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | Multi-Scale Process TCAD at the Institute for Microelectronics\, TU Wien
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe microelectronics industry has undergone significant innovation in recent years. The decades-long technology roadmap involving planar transistor scaling has evolved into a search for optimal geometries and materials beyond silicon. Circuit designers and fabrication engineers can no longer enjoy the benefits of decades of experimental data solely on silicon. Technology computer aided design (TCAD) and design-technology co-optimization (DTCO) strategies need to adapt to include the search for novel materials through a multi-scale modeling approach\, where the atomistic behavior of a material informs design decisions. With continued reduction of design margins\, process variability is becoming a significant concern. Understanding equipment-level and across-wafer variation is paramount. However\, current physical deposition and etching models do not provide a direct link to equipment inputs. This talk will discuss the state of process simulation and emulation\, and what we are developing to assist the microelectronics industry\, including both semiconductor manufacturers and electronic design automation (EDA) vendors. Including TCAD and DTCO during the design process has become invaluable. I will discuss how machine learning is helping merge feature-scale modeling with reactor-level inputs and equipment variability. Ultimately\, we are aiming towards a digital DTCO strategy for design discovery while reducing cost\, time\, and environmental impact of the design cycle by reducing the reliance on experimental process development.\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nLado Filipovic is an Associate Professor of Micro- and Nanoelectronics at TU Wien and the director of the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Multi-Scale Process Modeling of Semiconductor Devices and Sensors. He obtained his venia docendi (habilitation) in Semiconductor Based Integrated Sensors and his doctoral degree (Dr.techn.) in microelectronics from TU Wien in 2020 and 2012. He is a Principal Investigator in research projects related to both basic science and industry-relevant research. His primary research interests are the fabrication\, operation\, stability\, and reliability of novel semiconductor devices and sensors\, using advanced process and device modeling\; and the multi-scale modeling of processes involved in the fabrication of semiconductor devices and sensors. This involves combining atomistic modeling with Monte Carlo and continuum approaches\, as well as merging physical models with empirical geometric descriptors in a single framework\, specifically for process TCAD. His team has released several open-source software tools to model semiconductor device fabrication (ViennaPS - https://github.com/ViennaTools/ViennaPS ) and operation (ViennaEMC - https://github.com/ViennaTools/ViennaEMC ). He is currently also investigating efficient integration of machine learning with process TCAD to merge ab-initio with molecular dynamics\, to aid in material and design discovery\, and to combine feature-scale and reactor-scale models.\n\nThe seminar will be conducted both in person and on Zoom. Please visit MIPSE website for additional information: https://mipse.umich.edu/seminars_2425.php.
