SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Presentation:Control of Vehicles and Traffic for Safety and Mobility — CCAT Distinguished Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Advances in connectivity and sensor technologies coupled with the availability of powerful hardware and software tools and internet are slowly changing the intelligence on vehicles and the way we manage and control traffic for improved mobility and safety. While on the vehicle level safety is the main priority on the traffic level efficiency and mobility is the primary goal. This brings up two levels of control one on the vehicle level which dictates the movement of vehicle and one on the system level which looks at the flows rather than what each vehicle is doing.\n\nIn this talk\, Professor Ioannou will address some fundamental issues with vehicle safety\, how it improved over the years and what are the main challenges as we move toward fully automated vehicles without human drivers. He will address how smart vehicles can be connected with the infrastructure by serving as sensors and actuators in assisting the infrastructure in optimizing and managing traffic flows for better mobility and what is the importance of feedback control and optimization for safety and mobility. Additionally\, he will present examples on vehicle and traffic levels how control and optimization can improve safety and mobility. Finally\, he will address the importance of connectivity that will facilitate centrally coordinated approaches where system optimality becomes the main objective. Several examples of applications will be presented.\n---\nAbout the speaker: Petros Ioannou is a University Professor at the University of Southern California and holds the A.V ‘Bal’ Balakrishnan Endowed Chair in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He also holds a courtesy appointment with the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Industrial Systems Engineering. He is the founder and Director of the Center for Advanced Transportation Technologies and co-founder of the University Transportation Center METRANS and Associate Director for research for the Pacific Southwest Region (PSR) University Transportation Center (UTC) at the University of Southern California. He is also the founder and Director of a successful Master program in Financial Engineering housed at the Viterbi School of Engineering and the Director of a newly established center on Responsible AI for Decision Making in Finance (CREDIF). Dr. Ioannou is a member of the National Academy of Engineering\, National Academy of Inventors and Foreign Member of the Academia Europaea and the European Academy of Sciences\, a Life Fellow of IEEE and Fellow of IFAC and AAAS. He is the author/co-author of 9 books and over 400 research papers in the areas of controls and applications and intelligent transportation systems.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nNeural interfaces can restore or augment sensorimotor capabilities by converting high-bandwidth biological signals into control signals for an external device via a decoder algorithm. Users adapt their behavior in these interfaces via sensorimotor learning and decoder algorithms can adapt via machine learning. Leveraging user and decoder adaptation presents opportunities to improve usability and personalize devices. But we have limited understanding of how user and decoder learning interact. We also lack principled methods to model and optimize these complex two-learner dynamics. In this talk\, I'll first present work suggesting that adaptive decoder algorithms influence brain learning in a motor brain-computer interface. I'll then present new computational methods based on control theory and game theory that allow us to analyze and generate predictions for user-decoder interactions\, and experimental validation of these predictions in human myoelectric interface experiments.\n\nBio:\nDr. Orsborn is a Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professor in the departments of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Bioengineering at the University of Washington. Her research explores sensorimotor plasticity in brain-computer interfaces and how plasticity is influenced by the algorithms used. She completed her Ph.D. at the UC Berkeley/UCSF Joint Graduate Program in Bioengineering and her postdoctoral training at NYU’s Center for Neural Science. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Spectroscopic studies of nucleic acid structure\, dynamics and photophysics
DESCRIPTION:RNA performs a diverse set of biological functions\, many of which require it to fold into specific structures. Many techniques have been developed to study RNA folding\, a number of which are based on fluorescence detection. I will present work in which we used fluorescent analogues of the natural RNA bases to selectively probe the structures of different conformational subpopulations of RNA. We investigated the photophysical properties of base analogues in different structural contexts using a combination of time-resolved fluorescence measurements and fluorescence-detected circular dichroism spectroscopy\, which circumvents the ensemble averaging that typically limits the power of bulk spectroscopic methods such as CD. Ensemble averaging can also be avoided by performing measurements on single molecules. I will present work in which we utilized single-molecule microscopy to investigate the ensemble of structures adopted by RNA \"switches\". These studies reveal how the 3D structure of RNA is impacted by intrinsic factors such as base sequence and extrinsic factors such as the binding of small molecules.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Dinner for Democracy: The Politics of Abortion
DESCRIPTION:Note: this is an in-person event on the Ann Arbor Campus.\n\nDobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022) overturned decades of precedent set by Roe v. Wade (1973)\, ending federal protection to abortion access across the United States and returning the power to regulate abortion to the states. Meanwhile\, other states have passed ballot initiatives or legislation to protect access to abortion. Several states will have ballot initiatives relating to abortion during the 2024 general election. \n\nJoin Turn Up Turnout after our general meeting (5:00 pm in Weill Hall Room 1110) for a nonpartisan\, educational presentation to learn about the history and current state of The Politics of Abortion in the United States. SUMMARY:Performance:Delta 88
DESCRIPTION:An Indie Folk/Rock band based in Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, Delta 88’s music is that of an American hymn. Brought together on the four winds\, its members combine numerous musical influences to create their own unique sound like haunted mountain spirituals played through a distortion pedal. The songs move through wide channels of dynamic\, emotional arrangements\, from dark and somber barroom ballads to anthemic battle cries. With four studio albums\, the most recent produced by Grammy-award winning Joe Henry\, Delta 88 continues to mine for the new American songbook. The band’s music has been heard on stages through the U.S.\, Canada and Europe with the likes of Ralph Stanley\, Richard Buckner\, Emmylou Harris and Buddy Miller to name a few.
