SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\n*The exhibition is cosponsored by the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:From circles and dots to separating curves in genus 2 (combinatorics seminar)
DESCRIPTION:Given 6 dots in the plane\, how many ways are there to separate them into two sets of 3 using a circle? Or using a Jordan curve? The first question can be answered by considering \"higher order Voronoi diagrams\"\; the latter can be answered by observing these diagrams have a \"plabic\" structure (in the sense of Postnikov). This gives a bijection between such Jordan curves and degree 1 cluster variables in the cluster algebra of type X7\, an exceptional cluster algebra about which little is known. This correspondence allows us to translate structure theorems about cluster algebras into remarkable results on the structure of Jordan curves with 3 dots on either side. As an application\, we translate these results into analogous results on \"separating curves in the closed surface of genus 2\"\; specifically\, we show that the g=2 separating curve complex is a strongly connected 6-dimensional pseudomanifold. On joint work with James Beyer and Jaewon Min.\n\nThis talk will take place in East Hall 4448.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IOE 899: Convex Mixed-Integer Optimization for Causal Discovery
DESCRIPTION:Simge Küçükyavuz is Chair and David A. and Karen Richards Sachs Professor in the Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences Department at Northwestern University. She is an expert in mixed-integer\, large-scale\, and stochastic optimization and their applications across numerous domains\, including social networks\, computing and energy infrastructure\, statistical learning\, and logistics. She is an INFORMS Fellow\, and the recipient of the NSF CAREER Award and the INFORMS Computing Society (ICS) Prize. She is the past chair of ICS and serves on the editorial boards of Mathematics of Operations Research\, Mathematical Programming\, Operations Research\, SIAM Journal on Optimization\, and MOS-SIAM Optimization Book Series. She received her Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from the University of California\, Berkeley.\n\nAbstract:\nBayesian Networks (BNs) represent conditional probability relations among a set of random variables (nodes) in the form of a directed acyclic graph (DAG)\, and have found diverse applications in casual discovery. We study the problem of learning the sparse DAG structure of a BN from continuous observational data. The central problem can be modeled as a mixed-integer program with an objective function composed of a convex loss function and a regularization penalty subject to linear constraints. The optimal solution to this mathematical program is known to have desirable statistical properties under certain conditions. However\, the state-of-the-art optimization solvers are not able to obtain provably optimal solutions to the existing mathematical formulations for medium-size problems within reasonable computational times. To address this difficulty\, we tackle the problem from both computational and statistical perspectives. On the one hand\, we propose a concrete early stopping criterion to terminate the branch-and-bound process in order to obtain a near-optimal solution to the mixed-integer program\, and establish the consistency of this approximate solution. On the other hand\, we improve the existing formulations by replacing the linear big-M constraints that represent the relationship between the continuous and binary indicator variables with second-order conic constraints. Our numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches. This is joint work with Tong Xu\, Armeen Taeb\, Ali Shojaie.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nGenetic disorders caused by mutations in essential genes are a significant burden on patients and the healthcare system. CRISPR-Cas9 technology allows us to precisely modify the genome. Gene insertion using Cas9 may restore the expression of these missing genes and treat genetic disorders. This restoration may be durable if achieved in long-lived tissue resident stem cells that give rise to different organs. However\, efficient gene insertion in stem cells in vivo is a technical challenge that limits the development of durable therapies for genetic disorders. We aim to develop improved methods to insert genes in stem cells both ex-vivo and in vivo for the treatment of genetic disorders.\n\nOur studies focus on replacing the CFTR gene that is involved in cystic fibrosis (CF). CF is a monogenic disorder that affects the lungs and many other organs. People with CF (pwCF) experience chronic infections that result in lung failure and death. Replacement of the CFTR gene in airway stem cells is thus likely to improve the survival of pwCF. However\, this is challenging because it is a long gene (~4500 bp) that does not fit into adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors that enable efficient gene insertion. Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) packaged with Cas9 mRNA\, sgRNA and single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) templates have been proposed as an alternative. ssDNA templates do not pose any size restriction theoretically. However\, they are prone to degradation by nucleases even when the last few bases are protected by chemical modifications. Recent studies from our group have investigated if protection of internal bases within ssDNA templates may limit nuclease degradation further and improve gene insertion. Our studies show that the modification of internal bases improves gene correction by 2-3-fold in airway stem cells. The correction of CF-causing mutations using internal base modified templates restores CFTR function to 30-60% of the levels seen in non-CF controls. Our chemically modified ssDNA templates are effective when delivered using lipid nanoparticles and electroporation. Moreover\, these templates are effective in other therapeutically relevant cells such as hematopoietic stem cells and T-cells. Ongoing studies are testing if these chemically modified ssDNA templates improve gene insertion in vivo. Apart from this study\, our group is interested in alternative strategies to improve gene insertion through the modulation of DNA repair pathways and in developing improved methods to transplant genome engineered stem cells into the airways. Overall\, these novel approaches to genome engineer stem cells may enable the development of durable therapies for devastating diseases such as CF.\n\nBio:\nSriram Vaidyanathan\, PhD\, is a principal investigator in the Center for Gene Therapy at the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and an assistant professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Department of Astronomy 2024-2025 Colloquium Series Presents:
DESCRIPTION:Jamila’s Title: Finding low SNR exoplanets in data with complete signal models\n\nAbstract: Exoplanet signals in data are masked by complex instrumental noise and astrophysical sources of apriori unknown form. Traditional detection pipelines rely on sequential data processing with incomplete signal models at each step\, which can lead to overfitting and reduced detection sensitivity for faint exoplanetary signals. In this talk\, I will first describe my work on robust data-driven signal models and tractable joint-modeling approaches to improve the detection of weak exoplanet signals in transit light curves. These new joint-modelling approaches were used to search Kepler/TESS data and have so far uncovered 16 new data-rich exoplanet candidates.\nAnticipating future missions to directly image exoplanets with Earth-Sun sensitivities\, the second half of this talk will focus on optical modeling of starshades. Here I will present my work on developing tractable optical simulation techniques\, which I use to study the performance of starshades in the context of realistic astrophysical scenes. Broadly\, this work aims to assess the utility of starshades in preparation for HWO.\n\n\nFan’s Title: How do supermassive black holes grow from z = 4 to z = 0?\n\nAbstract: Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) grow together with their host galaxies throughout cosmic time\, and two growth channels are present – accretion and merger. I will talk about our recent efforts to build a complete picture of the SMBH growth under these two channels. Regarding the accretion channel\, the population mean SMBH accretion rate primarily correlates with galaxy stellar mass and redshift for the general galaxy population. I will present the survey data preparations briefly and the best measurements of this function\, where we use X-rays to sample the AGN accretion power and multiwavelength surveys to sample galaxies. I will then combine our observed accretion with modern cosmological simulations\, which provide merger information\, to illustrate how SMBHs evolve from z = 4 to z = 0. Our analyses can predict multiple properties of the SMBH population\, such as their mass function\, their scaling relation with their host stellar mass\, and the contributions of the two growth channels to the overall SMBH population growth.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:DE Seminar: Singularity Formation in Fluids
DESCRIPTION:Whether the 3D incompressible Euler equations can develop a finite-time singularity from smooth initial data is an outstanding open problem. In this talk\, I will discuss singularity formation in incompressible Euler equations with smooth data and boundary and present a framework for stable nearly self-similar blowup. In contrast to incompressible fluids\, singularity formation in compressible Euler equations has been established for a long time. However\, whether vorticity blows up in compressible fluids at the first singular time remains an open problem. We will generalize several methods and insights from incompressible fluids to establish vorticity blowup in compressible Euler equations with smooth and non-vacuous initial data.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Interplay Between Antiaromaticity and Diradical Character in Diarenoindacenes and Diindenoarenes
DESCRIPTION:This talk will present our synthetic\, structural\, computational and materials studies of a class of carbon-rich semiconducting molecules based on the indenofluorene (IF) skeleton. Access to the fully conjugated\, 20 π-electron\, formally antiaromatic system is accomplished via a variety of intermediate diones. These molecules in turn can be assembled via well-known organic possesses (Suzuki cross-coupling\, benzylic oxidation\, Friedel-Crafts acylation/alkylation). Optimization of their synthesis now permits access to IF derivatives in multigram quantities. We have shown that thin films or single crystals of several different IF scaffolds can serve as an active layer in organic field effect transistors (OFETs). Current studies (Figure 1) are focused on varying the antiaromaticity of the indacene unit by systematic alteration of the outer benzene groups with other aromatic units as well as on increasing the diradical character of the framework by expansion of the quinoidal core.
