SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Sources of Market Power in Web Search: Evidence from a Field Experiment
DESCRIPTION:We evaluate the economic forces that contribute to Google’s large market share in web search. We develop a model of search demand in which consumer choices are influenced by switching costs\, quality beliefs\, and inattention\, and estimate it using data from a field experiment with US desktop internet users. We find that (i) requiring Google users to make an active choice among search engines does not change market shares\, implying that switching costs play a limited role\; (ii) Google users who are paid to try Bing for two weeks update positively about its relative quality\, with a significant share preferring to continue using it\; (iii) switching defaults increases Bing market share by more than correcting quality beliefs\, consistent with persistent inattention. Correcting beliefs and removing choice frictions would increase Bing’s market share and increase consumer surplus. Policies that affect defaults are more effective than those requiring active choice. In the final part of the paper\, we use Microsoft search logs to assess the impact of additional data on search result relevance. The results suggest that sharing Google’s click-and-query data with Microsoft may have a limited effect on market shares.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Yang Chen\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Statistics\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The total electron content (TEC) maps can be used to estimate the signal delay of GPS due to the ionospheric electron content between a receiver and a satellite. This delay can result in a GPS positioning error. Thus\, it is important to monitor and forecast the TEC maps. However\, the observed TEC maps have big patches of missingness in the ocean and scattered small areas on the land. Thus\, precise imputation and prediction of the TEC maps are crucial in space weather forecasting. \n\nIn this talk\, I first present several extensions of existing matrix completion algorithms to achieve TEC map reconstruction\, accounting for spatial smoothness and temporal consistency while preserving essential structures of the TEC maps. We show that our proposed method achieves better reconstructed TEC maps as compared to existing methods in the literature. I will also briefly describe the use of our large-scale complete TEC database. Then\, I present a new model for forecasting time series data distributed on a matrix-shaped spatial grid\, using the historical spatiotemporal data and auxiliary vector-valued time series data. Large sample asymptotics of the estimators for both finite and high dimensional settings are established\, and performances of the model are validated with extensive simulation studies and an application to forecast the global TEC distributions.\n\nhttps://yangchenfunstatistics.github.io/yangchen.github.io/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Flash Talk | Breaking Bronze for Demeter? Identifying Indigenous Religious Practices in Archaic Greek Sicily
DESCRIPTION:Archaic Sicily\, like the island today\, was famous for its agricultural fertility. With its rich and abundant fields\, it is no surprise that Sicily was also a renowned center for the veneration of Demeter and Persephone. Sanctuaries for the worship of the two agricultural goddesses emerged most everywhere on the island in the 6th century BCE—some two centuries after the initial establishment of Greek settlements.\n\nIn this Flash Talk\, IPAMAA student Alex Moskowitz investigates a practice evident at these sanctuaries that is little known elsewhere in the Greek world: the dedication of intentionally broken bronze and iron ingots in votive deposits. He suggests that the archaeology of Indigenous Sicilian communities may explain this phenomenon and\, in doing so\, offers new insights into the complicated relationship between Indigenous and Greek communities in Archaic Sicily.\n\nKelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by Kelsey curators\, staff members\, researchers\, graduate students\, and guests talking about their recent research or current projects. Each presentation is followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. Flash Talks are free and open to all visitors. They take place at noon on the first Friday of every month.\n\nTo register for this event\, visit https://forms.gle/n9hffFrSrdfKY2RQ8.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:LAGS Seminar | MIT Lincoln Lab and FFRDCs – with 3D ladar mapping
DESCRIPTION:The work environment at a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) can feel like a blend of academic rigor\, government purpose\, and industry practicality. FFRDCs are partnerships between a government agency (like DoE\, DoD\, NASA\, NSF\, etc) and a private institution (usually universities) with the goal to do science research on behalf of the government\, outside of any organizational conflicts of interest that can arise in industry contracts. I’ll talk about how a DoD lab like Lincoln is different from DoE labs like Argonne\, Fermi\, or LBNL National Labs\, and how it’s different from working in industry or academia\, both in terms of the types of projects and the project funding paths. The MIT-LL employee base includes a wide variety scientists and engineers at the PhD\, MS/ME\, and BS/BA/BE levels\; I’ll give an overview of research topics across the Lab with special attention to areas with significant physics presence. In particular\, I’ll show some results from my group’s MACHETE ladar mapping sensor and talk about how physics and engineering intersect when we’re designing and testing airborne sensor platforms.\n\nThe Multi-look Airborne Collector for Human Encampment and Terrain Extraction (MACHETE) is a ladar system that produces high-quality\, 3D imagery from data captured from an altitude of 25 kft over a wide area at a very fast coverage rate. This system also can peek through openings in dense canopy to form detailed images of natural and human-made structures existing at and near the ground level. For a forested area that has 90% canopy cover and is the size of New York City’s Central Park (3.4 km 2 )\, MACHETE can provide detailed images of every building\, footbridge\, and walkway below the canopy at 25 cm resolution in about 5 minutes.\n\nEmily Peterson is a ladar and optical sensor designer at MIT Lincoln Laboratory\, and is an AMO physicist by training\, with a PhD from University of Michigan in 2005. She did her dissertation work in Phil Bucksbaum’s group using ultrafast lasers to study nonsequential double ionization of noble gasses\, and polarization-driven molecular alignment. That work extended to time-resolved x-ray measurements of laser-ionization processes during a post-doc at Argonne National Lab. In 2008 she joined the plasma spectroscopy group at Osram-Sylvania Lighting to study high-pressure discharge lamp technologies\, until industry funding for plasma R&D faded with increasing consumer interest in LEDs. Since 2014\, she has applied her grad school skills with pulsed lasers\, detection statistics\, optics and electronics hardware\, and experiment design in the Active Optical Systems group at MIT Lincoln Lab\, where she models\, designs\, builds\, and tests ladar sensor systems.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Can we change the overwork culture? The role of flexible work policies and their implementation
DESCRIPTION:This study examines how flexible work policies (e.g.\, time off\, flextime\, working from home) can help to change the “overwork” culture prevailing in American workplaces and its impact on employees’ work and health outcomes. Using the original survey of 4\,013 employees\, based on a probability-based panel designed to be representative of the U.S. household population\, we find that “ideal worker” norms – which promote a single-minded commitment to work – largely persist in organizations offering flexible work polices. However\, we also find that when these policies are implemented with additional organizational support -- gender-neutral framing\, transparency in policy granting\, and easy accessibility\, and managerial support -- employees are less likely to associate “successful employees” with the ideal worker norm of working long hours\, unlimited availability\, and prioritizing work over other matters. Moreover\, employees under these conditions report higher self-assessed job fit and job satisfaction and better health outcomes\, compared to employees in organizations where flexible work policies are implemented in less supportive\, more gendered\, and more discretionary ways. These findings suggest that the efficacy of flexible work policies depends more on how these policies are implemented\, rather than just their availability.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: Physics and control of active matter
DESCRIPTION:Active matter\, i.e.\, internally driven matter fueled by a sustained dissipation of free energy\, is ubiquitous in the natural world. Examples range from bird flocks and human crowds to migrating cells and biopolymer gels\, including synthetic systems like phoretic colloids and robots. Such active materials exhibit emergent collective phenomena that break cherished conservation laws (of energy\, mass\, momentum\, etc.)\, and raise natural questions regarding how they can be controlled. I will discuss a few different vignettes on our recent efforts in this direction\, highlighting implications for the design of novel metamaterials and biomimetic constructs.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContact: Silas Alben

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Algebraic Geometry Seminar: The Classification of Surfaces via Mori Theory
DESCRIPTION:The Enriques classification of algebraic surfaces was a milestone in the development of algebraic geometry and serves as inspiration for the birational classification of higher dimensional varieties pursued currently. I will discuss new phenomena that do not occur in the case of curves and introduce some crucial tools before presenting the classification according to the Kodaira dimension and birational invariants. I will present a proof using modern ideas from Mori’s minimal model program\, which extends to the dimension > 2 case.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture\, Charlotte Connop\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:The stabilization of the continental crust over geologic timescales is reliant upon the stratification of the crust into a felsic upper crust and a more mafic lower crust. This chemical stratification of the crust is deeply influenced by metamorphism and partial melting of the middle-to-lower continental crust. These processes are energy intensive\, particularly in the middle crust due to elevated heat fluxes imposed by surface temperatures. Moreover\, contrary to the view of a global mafic lower crust\, felsic metasedimentary rocks are commonly found in exhumed metamorphic terranes and xenoliths from the deep crust. The presence of these sedimentary rocks\, which are typically enriched in heat producing elements (U\, Th\, K)\, within the lower crust alters the thermal profile and rheology of the continental crust\, potentially leading to destabilization. In this talk I will explore two Variscan middle-to-lower continental crust exposures\, the Trois Seigneurs Massif\, French Pyrenees\, and the Ivrea-Verbano Zone\, Italian Alps\, to investigate the mechanisms responsible for the addition of sedimentary rocks to the deep crust\, alongside the mechanisms and timescales of metamorphism and partial melting of these sedimentary rocks. Massifs formed at the end of the Variscan Orogeny\, including these two field sites\, record widespread metamorphism and partial melting events within the continental crust\, and as such are ideal places to answer long-standing questions regarding crustal formation and evolution.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Lecture Series | Seeing is Knowing\, or is it?: Caste\, Protein\, and Realism
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores the role of caste in perceptions of reality in British India. It brings together three different modes of representing reality: social\, scientific\, and literary. Colonial ethnography attempted to understand caste as a distinct form of Indian civil society and painstakingly theorized caste-as-race. Colonial nutrition\, drawing on ethnographic understandings of caste\, hierarchized the very innards of Indians by mapping the racial basis of caste along the lines of contemporary dietary debates about protein. All the while\, colonial novelists used ethnographic and dietary understandings of caste to envision their version of a realistic world in a fictional form. The incipient form of the realist novel in India thus deployed caste as the perfect marriage of exteriority and interiority to represent a legible Indian reality in a newly imported form. In connecting these seemingly disparate modes of reality perception\, Sapui argues that in late nineteenth and early twentieth century India\, caste epistemologies\, understood as observable physical differences and knowable communal characteristics\, were key to understanding what is construed as Indian reality. In this regard\, seeing to know—the cornerstone of all empirical knowledge—as this talk will show\, assumes political\, pedagogical\, and insidiously persistent charge.\n\nMeghna Sapui is a postdoctoral fellow at the Michigan Society of Fellows and an assistant professor of English language and literature at the University of Michigan. Her work has appeared in *ELH\, Victorian Literature and Culture\, Victorian Review*\, and *Global Food History*. She is working on her book\, *Edible Empire: Tasting & Writing India*\, which looks at gastro narratives in the literature of British India.\n\n*Made possible with the generous support of the Title VI grant from the U.S. Department of Education.*\n\nFree and open to the public

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:NERS Colloquium: Psychological Safety to Innovation
DESCRIPTION:Psychological Safety to Innovation\; The Intersectionality of Healthy to Innovative Spaces and a “People-Centered” Focus to Drive Outcomes and Discovery in an Emerging Plasma Science\, Fusion\, and Fusion-Adjacent Energy Workforce\n\nAbstract:\nSystemic obstacles to STEM climates\, e.g.\, gatekeeping\, othering\, grant and award criteria\, Principal Investigator/Research Group accountability\, and closed-source data management\, are prime leverage points to reimagine and implement equitable restorative measures in current and burgeoning workspaces. Psychological safety and moral courage bring experts together with the community\, including members of marginalized groups\, to create a healthy foundation. A community feedback system facilitates the identification of workplace climate issues so they are promptly and effectively addressed. Cultural Competence leverages the established safety and courage base to chart a path to an inclusive culture and harness the power of diverse perspectives. Under this framework\, sponsored events can address many forms of oppression and empower thriving workspaces. Collaborating technical and cultural subject matter experts in supported community-based workshops and trainings\, provide a scaffolding for continued growth in individual spaces. Accurate use of the “Healthy to Innovative Framework” in learning and work spaces can transform climates and cultures to maximize innovation in a “People-Centered” focus that drives outcomes and discovery for an emerging fusion and fusion-adjacent energy workforce. \n\nCAPT Royce W. SUMMARY:Performance:Shemekia Copeland
DESCRIPTION:Shemekia Copeland possesses one of the most instantly recognizable and deeply soulful roots music voices of our time. The multi-GRAMMY nominee is beloved and honored worldwide for the fearlessness\, honesty and humor of her revelatory songs\, as well as for her winning\, engaging personality. The Chicago Tribune says\, “Copeland is the greatest female blues vocalist working today. There’s no mistaking the majesty of her instrument\, nor the ferocity of her delivery.”\n \nOn Copeland’s new album\, Blame It On Eve\, the songs all hit hard\, with jaw-dropping performances that instantly take hold and command repeated listening. “There’s serious business on the new album\,” Copeland says\, “but there are a lot of smiles here too\, a lot of joyous moments. It’s my blues for sure but it’s the brighter side. Issues are always important to me\, but so is rocking\, dancing and just having fun. And that’s something we all can all agree on.”\n\nWith Blame It On Eve\, Copeland embarks on what she calls “a vacation from all the heaviness.” Blame It On Eve contains plenty of Copeland’s trademark bold and courageous songs\, but here Copeland is also looking to unplug from the weight of the world. “My last three records have dealt with breaking news\,” she says. “This record is for people like me who want a break from the news.”
