SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

This event is free and open to everyone\, but it is intended for children ages 4–8.\n\nThis month’s book is *The Proudest Blue: A Story of Hijab and Family*—a vividly illustrated tale about resilience and sibling love—written by Olympic medalist and social justice activist Ibtihaj Muhammad. Young Faizah\, excited for the first day of school with her new backpack and light-up shoes\, is especially thrilled because it’s her older sister Asiya’s first day of hijab. However\, not everyone views Asiya’s beautiful blue hijab with the same admiration. After overhearing negative comments from Asiya’s classmates\, Faizah learns to find strength and pride in her sister’s journey. DESCRIPTION:This walking tour meets at the corner of S. University Ave. and State St.\, on the outer northwest corner of the Law Quad.\n\nHave you ever wondered about the history of the buildings that sit in the middle of campus that many associate with the Renaissance\, east coast Ivy Leagues\, or even Hogwarts?\n\nThis walking tour seeks to familiarize you not only with the illustrious\, imposing architecture of the Law Quadrangle here at the University of Michigan but also with the historic presence of the Law School itself. Over the course of 1.5 hours\, we will discuss the conception of the buildings themselves\, the winding roads it took to get there\, and the Law School’s many years of influence on social issues and legal education as we stroll through the Quad. Join us as we uncover stories and debunk myths about the distinctive University of Michigan Law Quadrangle.

A woman’s magical\, multi-generational\, healing journey from the Armenian Genocide to the Syrian war\, weaving Karagöz shadow puppetry\, traditional Hakawati storytelling\, and indigenous Middle-Eastern music.\n   \n*Azad* ( “Free” in Armenian\, Farsi\, Kurdish) is a kaleidoscopic story within a story\, centered on a storyteller’s discovery of her great-great grandfather’s shadow puppets in Aleppo during the Syrian war.\n   \nA century after Abkar Knadjian salvaged his family and his art from the Armenian Genocide\, his great-great-granddaughter Sona Tatoyan unearths a trunk in the attic of the family home\, filled with his handmade puppets and ancient magic tricks. This journey leads Sona to discover 1001 Nights and ScherAzad (the bold\, brilliant weaver of tales who counters destruction with creation) and catalyzes an epiphany: the frame story of 1001 Nights is a story of how trauma transpires and how it is healed.\n\n- - -\n\nActress\, screenwriter\, and storyteller\, Sona Tatoyan\, has been invited as this year’s distinguished guest to speak about and preview the art of Karagoz puppetry. Sona Tatoyan is a first-generation Syrian-Armenian-American actor/writer/producer with bases in Aleppo\, Syria\; Berlin\, Germany\; LA\, California\; and Yerevan\, Armenia.\n\nAs an actress\, her stage credits include world premieres at Yale Repertory Theatre\, The Goodman Theatre\, The American Conservatory Theatre\, and others. She starred in The Journey\, the first American independent film shot in Armenia (winner\, Audience Award Milan Film Festival\, 2002). As a writer\, her first feature film script\, The First Full Moon\, was a 2011 Sundance/RAWI Screenwriters Lab participant and 2012 Dubai Film Connection/Festival Project.\n\nAs a writer and actress\, Ms. Tatoyan created the storytelling piece Azad. The first iteration performances took place in April 2022 at the Pico Playhouse in Los Angeles\, followed by solo iterations in Boston at NAASR and recently at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin. Azad Storytelling gave birth to the multimedia theatrical experience entitled Azad (the Rabbit and the Wolf)\, which began development in January 2023 at The Vineyard Theater in NYC\, directed by Bill Pullman\, who remains Azad’s producer. It has continued development with two-time Obie Award-winning director and multimedia designer Jared Mezzocchi and was the recipient of the inaugural University of Connecticut Global Affairs Digital Media residency in May 2023 and the closing night performance of the Northeast Human Rights + film festival. It has also had residences at Harvard Artlab in September 2023 and received the Wake Forest University Character and Leadership guest artist residency and performance in January/February 2024. A final development residency is scheduled for September 2024 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.\n\nMs. Tatoyan founded Hakawati\, a non-profit storytelling vehicle focusing on elevating the voices of frontline and marginalized communities. Currently\, Ms. Tatoyan is in development on a TV series on Aleppo through the 20th century entitled Three Apples Fell from Heaven.\n\nMs. Tatoyan served on the World Cinema Jury of the Duhok IFF in Iraqi Kurdistan (2016) and as Rudolf Arnheim Guest Artist Professor at Humboldt University in Berlin\, (2017). Speaking engagements include: “Storytelling as Spiritual Vehicle: A response to the Armenian Genocide and Syrian Refugee Crisis” at The Brandenburger Gate Foundation\, Berlin\; and “Trauma\, Magic\, Love: Being in Aleppo with Karagöz Puppets\, My Ancestors and the Spirit of Osman Kavala” at CMES Harvard University. Ms. Tatoyan is a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and received her yoga teaching certification in Goa\, India. She is a graduate of the William Esper Studio in NYC\, where she studied acting with Bill Esper. Ms. Tatoyan is a graduate of Wake Forest University with a B.A. in English and Theater\, where she was mentored by Dr. Maya Angelou.\n\n- - - \n\n Ayhan Hulagu is a New York-based actor. After obtaining his college degree\, he joined the Sahika Tekand Studio Players in Istanbul. Hulagu brought his artistic experience to the U.S. and ​​was granted an ‘extraordinary ability artist’ status. He founded the U.S. Karagoz Theatre Company in 2017. His shows have been seen in more than 35 states across the U.S.\, and then he organized masterclass workshops and exhibitions to win new fans and audiences for Turkish Theatre at international festivals and universities. Hulagu has been a guest artist at multiple universities\, including New York\, Cornell\, UC Berkeley\, Hawaii\, Harvard\, and MIT. He directed a postdoctoral about American folktale in Anatolian theatre at the University of California – Irvine\, Department of Drama. DESCRIPTION:The 2nd annual Ann Arbor Django Reinhardt Festival features host band Djangophonique and their new material with the latest addition to the ensemble\, vocalist Katie Smith\, along with other midwestern musicians who draw inspiration from the Django lineage. Christo Rupenthal's Novelty Combo from Madison\, WI\, brings a fusion of antique Hawaiian steel guitar and hot club music\, and Erik McIntyre from Flint\, MI will be playing early American archtop guitar influenced by musicians such as Eddie Lang\, whose recordings with violinist Joe Venuti served as the blueprint for Reinhardt and Grapelli's work. With a range of diverse offerings\, united together by enthusiasm\, skill\, and passion for the legacy surrounding the music of Django Reinhardt\, this iteration of Ann Arbor's burgeoning new series is sure to delight\, transport\, and inspire.\n  \nDjangophonique is an award winning project that delivers the infectious joy\, and expressive freedom that is at the heart of Django Reinhardt’s jazz manouche. With respect for the tradition and a fearless creativity that bends the conventions of the style\, Djangophonique is keeping the Hot Club revival alive and well. The result is a sound that’s unmistakable to fans of the music\, and alluring to the uninitiated—a sound that can bring the lively energy of a Parisian dance hall to the quietest listening room or captivate a buzzing festival audience with the aching nostalgia of a shimmering ballad.\n  \nChristo Ruppenthal is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist and music entrepreneur whose professional career started in 2003.  He presents a unique mixture of Vaudeville-era novelty infused hot steel guitar playing from the 1920s and 30s \"Hawaiian Craze\" combined with the swinging sounds of Django Reinhardt’s 1930s and 40s guitar-driven Hot Club jazz. Think “Hot Hawaiian guitar meets Jazz à la Django!” Christo is an avid recording artist and performer with thousands of gigs both across the U.S. and internationally to his credit. \n\nInspired by a melting pot of moods\, styles\, and spirit heard in recordings from the 1920s and 30s (by such artists as Eddie Lang\, Louis Armstrong\, Blind Blake\, Lonnie Johnson\, Billie Holiday\, Django Reinhardt\, Blind Boy Fuller\, Agustín Barrios Mangoré\, The Carter Family\, Jimmie Rodgers...)\, Erik McIntyre continues to hone a distinct musical voice that pays homage with a personal touch.
