SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Let the Earth Breathe. Photo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored and presented by the Wallenberg Medal and Lecture\, the African Studies Center\, and the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies.\n----\nLet the Earth Breathe: Photo Exhibition\nby Nnimmo Bassey\, 2024 Wallenberg Medalist\, Architect\, Poet\, and African Environmental Activist\; and Omolade Adunbi\, African Studies Center Director\n\nPhoto Exhibition: People Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution -\nOpening Reception: 3:30 PM (Light refreshments served)\nGalleryDAAS\, Haven Hall\, Ground Floor\, Room G648\, 505 S State St.\nExhibition Dates: September 9 - October 11\n\nPhoto Exhibition: Living\, Community\, and Polluted Environment\nInternational Institute Gallery\, Weiser Hall\, 5th Floor\, Room 547\, 500 Church St.\nExhibition Dates: September 9 - 27\n\n- - -\nAbout the Photo Exhibition:\n\nThe Niger Delta region of Nigeria has been described as one of the most polluted spaces in the entire world. For over 60 years\, the region has been host to the activities of multinational oil corporations who partner with the Nigerian state in exploiting oil for profit. Oil was first discovered in the region in 1956\, and the first shipment of the commodity to the international market occurred in 1958 with a consignment of about 5\,000 barrels per day (bpd). Production peaked at about 2.5 million bpd\, but today\, because of community protests\, insurgency\, and general disruption to the activities of corporations\, the number hovers between 1.2 million to 1.4 million bpd. While the state has benefited immensely from oil production\, the same cannot be said of the communities that are hosts to pipelines\, flow stations\, and all of the oil infrastructure that has come to define the entire region. Loss of livelihood\, heavily polluted environment\, death\, and displacement have characterized the region’s interaction with multinational oil corporations such as Shell\, Chevron\, ExxonMobil\, Eni\, Total Energies\, etc.\n\nThis exhibition is a bold attempt to shed light on what it means to live in an oil extractive enclave like the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The images showcase the lives lived\, the loss\, perseverance\, and determination to survive.\n\nThe exhibition is divided into two parts. The first part of the exhibition is displayed in the DAAS gallery with the sub-theme “People Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution” and is a demonstration of the everyday lived experiences of the inhabitants of many of the enclaves of the Niger Delta. As depicted in the photos\, people cross polluted rivers to go to school and in search of a means of survival.\n\nGallery visitors are invited to cross from the DAAS Gallery to the International Institute Gallery on the 5th floor of Weiser Hall to see the second part of the exhibition\, “Living\, Community\, and Polluted Environment.” This portion of the exhibition demonstrates community resilience in the face of environmental persecution. It shows everyday life amid oil infrastructure that litters the entire landscape of many of the communities in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.\n\n— - - -\nNnimmo Bassey is an architect\, environmental justice activist\, writer\, and poet. His latest poetry collection is titled I See the Invisible (2023). Other collections include I Will Not Dance to Your Beat(2011) and We Thought It Was Oil But It Was Blood (2002). He is director of the ecological think-tank\, Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).\n\nOmolade Adunbi is a professor of Anthropology\, Afroamerican and African Studies and Law at the University of Michigan. His research examines the dynamics of power\, natural resource extractive practices\, governance\, human and environmental rights\, culture\, transnational institutions\, multinational corporations\, and the postcolonial state. His latest book\, Enclaves of Exception: Special Economic Zones and Extractive Practices in Nigeria (Indiana University Press\,2022)\, offers a new approach to exploring the relationship between oil and technologies of extraction and their interrelatedness to China’s interest in free trade zones and its impact on local livelihoods and environmental practices.\n\n*Nnimmo Bassey’s photos courtesy of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).*

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Student Logic and History of Math Seminar: The Axiom of Choice
DESCRIPTION:The Axiom of Choice\, now used throughout non-foundational mathematics with minimal hesitation\, has an extremely interesting history and many non-trivial consequences.\n\nFirst formulated explicitly by Ernst Zermelo to solve the so-called Well-Ordering Problem\, this axiom sparked debates throughout the mathematical community. David Hilbert\, arguably one of the greatest mathematicians of his time\, described Choice as the axiom \"most attacked up to the present in the mathematical literature\;\" and in Gregory Moore's words \"if the Axiom's most severe constructivist critics prevailed\, mathematics would be reduced to a collection of algorithms.\"\n\nModern mathematics\, however\, severely relies on the Axiom\, even if not in its full strength. Commonly used mathematical principles such as Zorn's Lemma\, the trichotomy of cardinals\, the right-invertibility of surjective functions\, and the existence of a basis for arbitrary vector spaces are all consequences of\, and\, in fact\, equivalent to\, the Axiom of Choice.\n\nThrough this inaugural talk of the Student Logic and History of Math Seminar\, we explore some of the history\, philosophy\, and mathematics surrounding the Axiom of Choice.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Dissertation Defense: Exploration of Quantum-Inspired Deep Learning Architectures for Fundamental Applications in Scientific Computing
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nNeural-network quantum states (NQS) is an exciting area of quantum-inspired machine learning\, wherein in a fully classical neural network is used to efficiently learn the optimal state vector for a quantum unsupervised learning problem\, bypassing the need to model the full exponentially large state space. In theory\, NQS architectures are broadly applicable\, and have been demonstrated successfully on several fundamental applications. We seek to further explore the practical utility of NQS as a black box solver for various applications in the scientific computing domain. We first present NQS as an explicit avenue for de-quantizing variational quantum eigensolvers\, demonstrating with the variational quantum linear solver (VQLS). We then explore the utility of VQLS and its de-quantization\, VNLS\, as black box solvers for a Newton-based linear complementarity solver\, used to model the time evolution of a rudimentary soil system. We introduce a new retentive network (RetNet) autoregressive NQS ansatz to solve electronic ground state calculations in computational quantum chemistry\, and we finish with a scaling law analysis of the RetNet architecture and its immediate autoregressive predecessors as applied to electronic structure calculations.\n\nHybrid Defense:\n5822 East Hall\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/92606555957

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Quantitative Biology Seminar | Does Adaptive Immunity Learn Physically?
DESCRIPTION:The adaptive immune system of vertebrates is able to learn from past experiences to better suit an unforeseen future. This is made possible by a diverse and dynamic repertoire of lymphocytes expressing unique antigen receptors and capable of rapid evolution within an individual. However\, naturally occurring immune responses exhibit limits in efficacy\, speed and capacity to adapt to new challenges. In this talk\, I will present conceptual and computational frameworks to (1) explore functional impact of non-equilibrium antigen recognition and (2) identify conditions under which natural selection acting local in time can find adaptable solutions favorable in the long run – in light of viral-immune coevolution. Using these examples\, I show that immune cells can exploit physical constraints to extract signal and expand their adaptive potential. Considering information propagation from receptor to repertoire and back lets us rethink the logic behind proofreading\, in a dynamical system that demands precision and balance while facing perpetual disturbances.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Gravitational Wave Memory and Its Electromagnetic Analog
DESCRIPTION:Gravitational waves stretch and squeeze space\, but even when the wave has passed there is a residual stretch and squeeze known as gravitational wave memory. In particular\, the merger of binary black holes results in gravitational wave memory. I will discuss the prospects for measuring memory from binary black hole mergers.\n\nThough gravitational wave memory is a consequence of the nonlinear Einstein field equations\, it can be most easily understood by using linear perturbation theory with the Weyl tensor as the basic variable. Gravitational perturbation theory using the Weyl tensor is analogous to Maxwell's equations for electromagnetism. Correspondingly\, there is an electromagnetic analog of gravitational wave memory called electromagnetic memory. I will present a proposal for how to measure electromagnetic memory.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Sociocultural Anthropology Colloquium | \"No Place For Those Who Suffer: Surviving Trauma in Exile\"
DESCRIPTION:\"Succeeding to previous regimes of migrants as laboring (Sayad 2004) and suffering bodies (Fassin 2013\, Ticktin 2011)\, and to the trauma regime of victimhood (Fassin and Rechtman 2009)\, a trauma regime of survival is emerging in public discourses\, re-shaping psychotherapeutic practices and migration policies. \n\nBased on ethnographic evidence from fieldwork in a trauma-therapy center for refugees in Sweden\, this presentation will illustrate how the expectation from exiles nowadays is to overcome their suffering _ the suffering based on which they were granted asylum_ so they survive and integrate into the host societies. There is no place for refugees’ suffering in the countries of exile when survival becomes proof of their deservingness. In this context of forced exile\, autonomy\, and survival become closely linked to\, if not defined by\, integration\, which is\, at the same time\, hindered by racism\, discrimination\, and othering policies. This superposition of trauma survival and integration creates a hard-to-break-from conundrum for exiles\, as they are expected to heal to integrate when healing is almost impossible in disintegration.\n\nThis 'survival regime' has impacted migration and integration policies. It allowed perceptions of and expectations from refugees in Western European host countries to change\, opening the possibility for policymakers to perceive refugees not only as people to protect based on international law obligations but also (and mostly) as an economic opportunity and a dividend. It has also deeply reshaped therapeutic practices\, disrupting the roles of psychiatrists and psychotherapists\, and redefining what 'therapeutic' and 'psychological recovery' mean.\"\n\nMayssa Rekhis is a Medical Doctor\, who graduated from the University of Tunis el-Manar\, Tunisia\, and an anthropologist\, holding a Ph.D from the School of Advanced Studies in Social Sciences EHESS - Paris\, France. She is a researcher\, educator\, and activist\, and works at the intersection of these roles\, with a focus on health\, social justice\, and migration. She has more than a decade of experience working in SWANA (South West Asia and North Africa)\, East Africa\, and Europe\, both as a researcher and as a practitioner with experience mainly in the non-profit sector. As a researcher\, she explores humans' experiences with extreme violence\, trauma\, suffering\, and exile\, and is interested in the roles of psychiatry and psychotherapies\, mechanisms and processes of subjectivation\, and healing. She is currently working in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine at Gothenburg University\, in Sweden\, as a lecturer.

The images showcase the lives lived\, the loss\, perseverance\, and determination to survive. \n\nThe exhibition is divided into two parts. The first part of the exhibition is displayed in the DAAS gallery with the sub-theme “People Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution” and is a demonstration of the everyday lived experiences of the inhabitants of many of the enclaves of the Niger Delta. As depicted in the photos\, people cross polluted rivers to go to school and in search of a means of survival. \n\nGallery visitors are invited to cross from the DAAS Gallery to the International Institute Gallery on the 5th floor of Weiser Hall to see the second part of the exhibition\, “Living\, Community\, and Polluted Environment.” This portion of the exhibition demonstrates community resilience in the face of environmental persecution. He is director of the ecological think-tank\, Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF). \n\nOmolade Adunbi is a professor of Anthropology\, Afroamerican and African Studies and Law at the University of Michigan. His research examines the dynamics of power\, natural resource extractive practices\, governance\, human and environmental rights\, culture\, transnational institutions\, multinational corporations\, and the postcolonial state. His latest book\, Enclaves of Exception: Special Economic Zones and Extractive Practices in Nigeria (Indiana University Press\,2022)\, offers a new approach to exploring the relationship between oil and technologies of extraction and their interrelatedness to China’s interest in free trade zones and its impact on local livelihoods and environmental practices. \n\nDiepreye Amanah is a Nigerian-American poet from Charlotte\, North Carolina. She holds an MFA from the University of Michigan and is an assistant editor for the Michigan Quarterly Review. Winner of a 2022 and a 2023 Academy of American Poets Prize\, and the second-runner-up in the 2023 American Literary Review Poetry Contest\, her poems also appear or are forthcoming in Epoch\, The Adroit Journal\, Up the Staircase Quarterly\, The Rising Phoenix Review\, and elsewhere. Amanah is longlisted in the 2023 National Poetry Competition.\n\n\n---\n\nThese events are hosted in conjunction with the 2024 Wallenberg Medal and Lecture featuring Nnimmo Bassey\nTuesday\, September 10 at 4:30 PM | Robertson Auditorium\, Ross School of Business\nVisit https://wallenberg.umich.edu for more information.\n\n*Nnimmo Bassey’s photos courtesy of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).*\n\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact levyra@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series: The Social Pyschology of Systemic Racism (Kickoff Event)
DESCRIPTION:What are the points of connection between structures and individuals when we think about bias? In the Fall 2024 RCGD Seminar Series “The Social Psychology of Systemic Racism\,” an all-star lineup of behavioral and political psychologists will define what\, in their words\, makes systemic racism systemic\, and how extra-individual levels of analysis could be incorporated in social psychological theories and methods. \n\nA kickoff for the series and reception will be led by series organizer Nick Camp.\n\nTalks in this series will be held Mondays from 3:30 to 5\, starting Sept. 16. Check the listings for details!\nIn person: ISR Thompson 1430\nAs permissions allow\, seminars are later posted to our YouTube playlist.\n\nGroup Dynamics Seminar Series\nThe Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent seminars have included themes such as political polarization\, cultural psychology\, and evolution & human behavior.

SUMMARY:Meeting:Student Combinatorics: Generalizing Polypositroids
DESCRIPTION:In their 2020 paper\, Thomas Lam and Alexander Postnikov define polypositroids\, the polytopal analog of positroids. However\, they also go one step further and observe that the definition of a polypositroid is secretly based on the type A root system. In this talk\, we’ll discuss how polypositroids can be extended to arbitrary finite root systems and examine how the parameterization of polypositroids can be generalized too.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Beauty of Difference
DESCRIPTION:Hadija Haruna-Oelker (she/her) is a prize-winning German author\, journalist\, and podcaster. She writes and speaks regularly in media about migration\, race\, racism\, discrimination\, and the intersection of human identities. She is convinced that we all carry within us the perspectives of others\, but how to talk and write about yourself and others? In her book \"The Beauty of Difference—think differently together\"\, which was nominated for the prize „der Leipziger Buchmesse“ in 2022\, she tells her personal story and combines it with socio-political reflections about Germany as a migration society. She develops visions of how we can unlearn what we have learned. In October 2024\, her second book \"Be together\" will be published.\n\nBased on this work\, her reading is about perceptions of difference\, changing perspectives\, and empowerment with translated texts. What helps to shed light on the current social and political crises from more perspectives? What role does memory and reappraisal play in Germany?
