SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Let the Earth Breathe. Photo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored and presented by the Wallenberg Medal and Lecture\, the African Studies Center\, and the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies.\n----\nLet the Earth Breathe: Photo Exhibition\nby Nnimmo Bassey\, 2024 Wallenberg Medalist\, Architect\, Poet\, and African Environmental Activist\; and Omolade Adunbi\, African Studies Center Director\n\nPhoto Exhibition: People Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution -\nOpening Reception: 3:30 PM (Light refreshments served)\nGalleryDAAS\, Haven Hall\, Ground Floor\, Room G648\, 505 S State St.\nExhibition Dates: September 9 - October 11\n\nPhoto Exhibition: Living\, Community\, and Polluted Environment\nInternational Institute Gallery\, Weiser Hall\, 5th Floor\, Room 547\, 500 Church St.\nExhibition Dates: September 9 - 27\n\n- - -\nAbout the Photo Exhibition:\n\nThe Niger Delta region of Nigeria has been described as one of the most polluted spaces in the entire world. For over 60 years\, the region has been host to the activities of multinational oil corporations who partner with the Nigerian state in exploiting oil for profit. Oil was first discovered in the region in 1956\, and the first shipment of the commodity to the international market occurred in 1958 with a consignment of about 5\,000 barrels per day (bpd). Production peaked at about 2.5 million bpd\, but today\, because of community protests\, insurgency\, and general disruption to the activities of corporations\, the number hovers between 1.2 million to 1.4 million bpd. While the state has benefited immensely from oil production\, the same cannot be said of the communities that are hosts to pipelines\, flow stations\, and all of the oil infrastructure that has come to define the entire region. Loss of livelihood\, heavily polluted environment\, death\, and displacement have characterized the region’s interaction with multinational oil corporations such as Shell\, Chevron\, ExxonMobil\, Eni\, Total Energies\, etc.\n\nThis exhibition is a bold attempt to shed light on what it means to live in an oil extractive enclave like the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The images showcase the lives lived\, the loss\, perseverance\, and determination to survive.\n\nThe exhibition is divided into two parts. The first part of the exhibition is displayed in the DAAS gallery with the sub-theme “People Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution” and is a demonstration of the everyday lived experiences of the inhabitants of many of the enclaves of the Niger Delta. As depicted in the photos\, people cross polluted rivers to go to school and in search of a means of survival.\n\nGallery visitors are invited to cross from the DAAS Gallery to the International Institute Gallery on the 5th floor of Weiser Hall to see the second part of the exhibition\, “Living\, Community\, and Polluted Environment.” This portion of the exhibition demonstrates community resilience in the face of environmental persecution. It shows everyday life amid oil infrastructure that litters the entire landscape of many of the communities in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.\n\n— - - -\nNnimmo Bassey is an architect\, environmental justice activist\, writer\, and poet. His latest poetry collection is titled I See the Invisible (2023). Other collections include I Will Not Dance to Your Beat(2011) and We Thought It Was Oil But It Was Blood (2002). He is director of the ecological think-tank\, Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).\n\nOmolade Adunbi is a professor of Anthropology\, Afroamerican and African Studies and Law at the University of Michigan. His research examines the dynamics of power\, natural resource extractive practices\, governance\, human and environmental rights\, culture\, transnational institutions\, multinational corporations\, and the postcolonial state. His latest book\, Enclaves of Exception: Special Economic Zones and Extractive Practices in Nigeria (Indiana University Press\,2022)\, offers a new approach to exploring the relationship between oil and technologies of extraction and their interrelatedness to China’s interest in free trade zones and its impact on local livelihoods and environmental practices.\n\n*Nnimmo Bassey’s photos courtesy of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).*

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Butch Closet
DESCRIPTION:In the multi-media installation *The Butch Closet*\, artist Phranc illustrates her life stories as a queer artist\, Jewish lesbian folk singer\, and \"cardboard cobbler.\" By meticulously re-creating personal objects and pieces of clothing out of paper\, cardboard\, thread\, and paint\, she revisits her own history\, contextualizing her experiences as an iconic performer\, and maker\, constructing\, reconstructing\, and re-imagining her image against a larger historical context of second-wave feminism and queer activism. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet* is the second iteration of the project\, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works. As part of the installation\, visitors can peer into a closet built in the center of the gallery designed by the artist. Conceptually\, the space shifts from inside to outside\, public and private\, and explores themes of visibility and that which remains inaccessible or unseen.\n\nAbout the artist:\nPhranc is a jewish lesbian folksinger and queer artist who uses song\, painting and sculpture to champion personal identities and illustrate the struggle\, survival\, and victory of the queer individual. An internationally acclaimed and award winning performer. Phranc’s work integrates humor and a butch lesbian aesthetic. Her current project\, Phranc Talk: The Butch Closet\, is a multi-media memoir that spans her 40-year career. Phranc lives and works in Santa Monica\, California and Vancouver\, British Columbia.\n\n*Phranc is the 2024 Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.*

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Quantum Research Institute Seminar | Exploring selective radiance with trapped atoms on a nanophotonic resonator
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nControl and manipulation of the collective radiative states of atomic systems could bring new opportunities for quantum many-body physics and quantum networks. In this talk\, I will discuss our recent investigation on “selective radiance\,” a phenomenon in which an atomic excitation couples to a specific photonic channel with collective enhancement (called ‘superradiance’) but to all other channels with suppression (‘subradiance’). Following our recent experimental realization of cold atom trapping on a nanophotonic microring resonator\, we study how a dense atomic ensemble collectively couples to a whispering-gallery-mode in the resonator and to other free space modes. I will discuss the decay dynamics of an atomic ensemble following long and short excitation pulses\, with the former driving the system into a steady state and the latter into a so-called timed-Dicke state. I will discuss the potential of our platform to realize selective radiance in an atom array and explore collective quantum optics with trapped atoms coupled to nanophotonic circuits. \n\nBio. Dr. Hung received his PhD in Physics at the University of Chicago in 2011\, where he developed an in-situ microscopy technique on two-dimensional atomic quantum gases to study quantum phase transitions. Before joining Purdue in 2015 as a faculty member\, he held a postdoctoral fellowship at the California Institute of Technology and developed one of the first photonic crystal atom-photon interfaces for quantum optics. His research directions at Purdue University span from studying out-of-equilibrium many-body physics using atomic quantum gases to interfacing ultracold atoms with nanophotonic circuits for quantum optics and many-body physics with photon-mediated long-range interactions. He is a recipient of the AFOSR Young Investigator Award and the NSF CAREER award.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Noon Lecture Series | Crafting Immortality: Emotional Capital and Randoseru Victory
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This lecture will be held in person in room 1010 Weiser Hall and virtually via Zoom. This webinar is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. Once you've registered\, the joining information will be sent to your email. Register for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/egGxJ\n \nIn 1886\, Prime Minister Itō Hirobumi gifted the future Taishō emperor\, crown prince Yoshihito\, a randoseru schoolbag at the occasion of his entering elementary school. Less than a century later\, the randoseru has come to signify an inherent quality of capitalist culture\, namely the intimate interconnections of consumer acts and emotional life\, particularly the expression and experience of nostalgia. I propose that this nostalgia has been crafted through the social relations by which the randoseru is being circulated while specific notions of craft\, childhood\, and immortality are being reiterated.\n \n Sabine Frühstück is Distinguished Professor and the Koichi Takashima Chair in Japanese Cultural Studies at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. She has most recently authored the monographs *Playing War: Children and the Modern Paradoxes of Militarism in Japan* (University of California Press\, 2017) and Gender and Sexuality in Modern Japan (Cambridge University Press\, 2023). Her current research is about modern manifestations of immortality and the malleability of the human body and its parts.\n \n This lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at umcjs@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ChE SEMINAR: Kristala Prather\, MIT
DESCRIPTION:A reception with light refreshments will be held in the B32 lobby before each seminar from 1-1:30 p.m.\n\nAbstract: Biological systems have the potential to produce a wide array of compounds with uses that include fuels\, materials\, bulk chemicals\, and pharmaceuticals. Our group is focused on applying principles from metabolic engineering and biocatalysis towards the design and construction of novel biosynthetic pathways for specified target compounds. This “retro-biosynthetic design” approach is aided by advancements in the development of new tools under the umbrella of synthetic biology that facilitate re-engineering of biological systems. As new pathways are designed and constructed\, typical challenges such as low product yields and titers can hamper development of commercially-relevant processes. The sheer volume of chemicals that ultimately need to be produced also requires the use of a broader range of feedstocks than those traditional employed in bioprocesses. In this talk\, I will review our group’s sustained efforts to both produce novel compounds through biological synthesis and develop strategies to address the inherent limitations.\n\nSpeaker Bio: Kristala L.J. Prather is the Arthur D. Little Professor and Department Head in the Department of Chemical Engineering at MIT. She received an S.B. degree from MIT in 1994 and Ph.D. from the University of California\, Berkeley (1999)\, and worked 4 years in BioProcess Research and Development at the Merck Research Labs prior to joining the faculty of MIT. Her research interests are centered on the design and assembly of recombinant microorganisms for the production of small molecules\, with additional efforts in novel bioprocess design approaches. Prather’s honors include the Charles Thom Award of the Society for Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology (2017)\, the Andreas Acrivos Award for Professional Progress in Chemical Engineering of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE\, 2021)\, and the Marvin J. Johnson Award (BIOT Division\, American Chemical Society\, 2024). Additional honors include selection as a Fellow of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study (2014-2015)\, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS\; 2018)\, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE\; 2020)\, and AIChE (2020).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar Series - Of fish tongues and other cypriniform oddities: Investigating the origin of trophic novelties
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our ongoing Thursday Seminar Series.\n\nAbout this seminar: While functional morphologists have long studied the evolution of suites of trophic structures\, the origin and evolution of morphological novelties has received less attention. There may be times when complex structures originate all at once. When such complex novelties first originate they must become incorporated into an integrated system to be rendered fully functional. Thus\, morphological integration is key at the outset of acquisition of morphological novelties. Cypriniforms are a diverse group of freshwater fishes characterized by several trophic novelties that include: kinethmoid-mediated premaxillary protrusion\, a muscular palatal organ\, hypertrophied lower pharyngeal jaws that masticate against the base of the neurocranium\, and an epibranchial organ used to aggregate small food particles. In this talk I will discuss our findings regarding the anatomy\, development\, and function of some of these trophic novelties.

SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:Alumni of the Year Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the seminar featuring Dr. Jhoon Kim\, the Alumni of the Year for the U-M Department of Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering. The talk will be followed by a reception. All are welcome to attend!\n\nWe are proud to present our Alumni of the Year Award to Professor Jhoon Kim. \n\nProfessor Jhoon Kim is a Yonsei Lee Youn Jae Fellow\, a Fellow of Korean Academy of Science and Technology\, and a professor of atmospheric science at Yonsei University in Seoul\, South Korea. \n\nHe has worked on the remote sensing algorithm development of aerosol and trace gases to monitor their regional distribution. He is a P.I. of the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS)\, the first instrument for air quality monitoring from GEO at unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution. He developed sophisticated aerosol algorithm for GOCI\, AHI\, AGRI\, and AMI\, with machine learning and data fusion for better accuracy and coverage based on big data science. He has also worked on CO2 remote sensing using GOSAT and OCO series.\n\nHe earned a Ph.D. in Atmospheric and Space Sciences (now U-M Climate and Space) in 1991 at the University of Michigan College of Engineering\, after earning an M.S. in Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Michigan College of Engineering in 1987. He earned his B.S. in Atmospheric Sciences at the College of Natural Sciences\, Seoul National University\, Seoul National University in 1986.\n\nHe is a member of the Committee on Earth Observing Satellites (CEOS) AC-VC\, through which he has worked to establish coordinated global observation of air quality using GEO constellation. He is also a member of International Radiation Commission (IRC)\, WMO GURME Science Advisory Group (SAG)\, and WHO Global Platform for Air Quality and Health. He serves a guest editor for the Atmospheric Measurement Technique and Environmental Research Letter. He is also a member of the Science and Technology Committee and the National Council on Climate and Air Quality (NCCA) of Korea.\n\nAbstract:\nSatellite Remote Sensing of Atmospheric Composition from Geostationary Earth Orbit over Asia – My journey from planetary to Earth atmosphere\n\nFeaturing Dr. Jhoon Kim\, Lee Youn Jae Fellow Professor of Atmospheric Sciences\, Yonsei University\, Seoul\, Korea\n\nAtmospheric composition including aerosols\, ozone\, air pollutants\, and greenhouse gases have been observed extensively from Low Earth Orbit (LEO) providing one to two observations per day. Meteorological satellites have provided aerosol optical properties from both LEO and Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) for extended period. Geostationary Ocean Color Imager 2 (GOCI-II) and Advanced Meteorological Imager (AMI) have provided aerosol dataset from the same GK-2 platform. With the recent launch of the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) onboard the GK-2B in 2020\, we now can observe both aerosols and trace gases at unprecedented spatiotemporal resolution from GEO. GEMS\, the first ultraviolet-visible hyperspectral instrument for air quality observation from GEO has provided column amounts of atmospheric pollutants (O3\, NO2\, SO2\, HCHO\, CHOCHO\, and aerosols) every hour to capture their diurnal variations. Details of the GEMS data products are presented\, with validations\, and case studies of volcanic eruption\, dust\, wildfire\, urban pollution\, and industrial activities. In version 3\, there are noticeable improvements in trace gases from updated AMF\, fitting window\, the separation of stratospheric/tropospheric components etc. Calibration/validation activities are critical to diagnose and improve the overall data quality including the ASIA-AQ\, Pandora Asia network (PAN)\, PEGASOS\, GMAP/SIJAQ\, ACCLIP\, and international CAL/VAL team works. The GEMS retrievals indicate good agreements from the validation campaigns\, but still require further improvements in L1 processing as well. Faster sampling rates at higher spatial resolution from GEO increase the probability of finding cloud-free pixels\, leading to more observations of aerosols and trace gases than have been possible from LEO. GEMS will form the GEO AQ satellite constellation with the NASA’s Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution (TEMPO) launched in 2023 and planned ESA’s Sentinel-4 in 2025\, as recognized by the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS).

The two main challenges for DBS standard-of-care are rooted in the accurate positioning of the DBS leads during intraoperative implantation and the postoperative programming of the implanted DBS device\, both needed to achieve the sought optimal therapeutic benefit. However\, both processes rely on subjective patient exams\, on expert neurophysiologists to optimize implant trajectory and programming\, and on time-consuming trial-and-error approaches. Furthermore\, existing commercially available stimulation approaches (continuous stimulation\, also known as open-loop stimulation) lack integration with patient behavior and environmental factors. We sought to address these shortcomings in the ET population\, by demonstrating the feasibility of on-demand responsive stimulation using only thalamocortical neuromarkers that modulate movement related-behavior. This led to the design and implementation of the first fully embedded closed-loop algorithm for chronic neurostimulators (CL-DBS) in humans affected by ET\, which achieved an equally effective treatment compared to current DBS approaches while having a more efficient stimulation energy profile. Furthermore\, CL-DBS demonstrated potential in decreasing DBS-related side effects (e.g. speech impairments). Additionally\, the unique window provided by intraoperative acute recordings\, allowed us to further our understanding of the thalamocortical network. We sought to improve intraoperative DBS implantation for the PD population by leveraging a novel biomarker\, DBS local evoked potential (DLEP)\, which strongly correlates with the location of the typical target-subregions of the nuclei of interest\, the subthalamic nucleus (STN) and globus pallidus internus (GPi). Most importantly\, the proposed methodology requires no patient interaction and could be leveraged for implementing an objective\, real-time guided placement of the DBS lead\, with a less time-consuming process and subjectivity compared to traditional mapping procedures.\n\nBio:\nDr. Enrico Opri is an Assistant Professor at University of Michigan within the Department of Biomedical Engineering. He is a core faculty within the Biointerfaces Institute and he is affiliated with the Michigan Neuroscience Institute (MNI). His lab focuses on understanding how stimulation can alter neural circuits affected in neurological disorders\, with the overall goal to identify neurological markers that can be leveraged to improve and enhance current state of the art therapies within movement disorders. He earned his PhD in Biomedical Engineering at University of Florida. Later he completed his postdoctoral training at Emory University.\n\nZoom:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/94337625486

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Department of Astronomy 2024-2025 Colloquium Series Presents:
DESCRIPTION:“Planetary Systems through Time”\n\nPlanets are not born in their final state. Young planets are sculpted by interactions with their host star\, other planets in the system\, and their greater environment. Large populations of mature (>1 Gyr) exoplanets\, like those from the Kepler mission\, provide useful but indirect constraints on the relative importance of such evolutionary processes. Because the first few hundred million years of a planet's life are the most formative\, studies of young (<1 Gyr) planets yield more direct information on exoplanet evolution\, providing an opportunity to observe such processes in action. Identifying and characterizing young planets poses significant challenges\, but the advent of K2 and TESS data\, coupled with new planet-search methods\, has enabled the discovery of dozens of transiting planets in 2–700 Myr clusters\, moving groups\, and star-forming regions. The statistical properties of these systems reveal that young planets are larger than their older counterparts and offer insights into the timescales of planetary migration. Furthermore\, with the aid of transmission spectroscopy from JWST\, we have our first glimpses into the atmospheres of these infant planets\, which have already provided a wealth of information regarding the structure and composition of a subset of the youngest planets.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: A Different Shade of Freedom: Civil Rights\, Wide History\, and the Post-WWII Transformation of Black Conservatism in America
DESCRIPTION:Civil rights historians have advocated long perspectives linking the post-WWII movement to previous eras. Dillard makes the case for wide frameworks to conceptualize ideological tensions within the Black political culture that sustained movement activism. A wide history\, she contends\, has ample room for African American critics who occupied center-to-right ideological positions. In aspiring to wideness she provides an entangled history foregrounding Black conservatives within debates—not only about strategies for change but also over the meanings of belonging and home—that shaped the movement\, on the one hand\, and impacted the evolution of American conservatism\, on the other.\n\nAngela D. Dillard is the Richard A. Meisler Collegiate Professor of Afroamerican & African Studies\, and History. She specializes in American intellectual history\, particularly around issues of race\, religion and politics — on both the Left and the Right sides of the political spectrum. A former chair of the UM Department of History she currently serves as the university’s inaugural vice provost for undergraduate education -- orchestrating strategic initiatives to enrich the academic experience of Michigan's 32\,000+ undergraduate students – and is completing her third book\, \"A Different Shade of Freedom.\"\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Ziwet Lecture III: Lorentzian Polynomials\, Matroids over Hyperfields\, and Related Topics
DESCRIPTION:Lorentzian polynomials serve as a bridge between continuous and discrete convex analysis\, with tropical geometry providing the critical link. The tropical connection is used to produce Lorentzian polynomials from discrete convex functions\, leading for example to a short proof of Mason's conjecture on the number of independent sets of a matroid. This lecture series will explore the intricate relationships among Grassmannians over hyperfields\, dequantization processes\, and the theory of Lorentzian polynomials. In ongoing collaborative work with Matt Baker\, Mario Kummer\, and Oliver Lorscheid\, we extend the connection between Lorentzian polynomials and discrete convex functions to matroids over triangular hyperfields\, as introduced by Viro. This extension deepens our understanding of the space of Lorentzian polynomials\, revealing a complex interplay among analysis\, combinatorics\, and geometry.\n\nThe three lectures in this series are designed to be accessible to a broad audience and appropriate for a Department Colloquium.\n\nAmong his many honors\, Prof. Huh is a recipient of the Fields Medal (2022)\, the MacArthur Fellowship (2022)\, and the New Horizons in Mathematics Prize (2019). He received his PhD in Mathematics from U-M in 2014.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Amy Ku'uleialoha Stillman
DESCRIPTION:What can an indigenized ethnomusicology contribute to knowledge production\, musical knowledge\, and knowledge about musical practice by\, about\, and especially for [in the service of] indigenous people? My title raises two questions:\n\n1) Starting from a general perspective of asking how soundscapes and sonic intimacies are experienced by indigenous people\, and to bring this within an explicitly ethnomusicological framework\, how are musical soundscapes and musical sonic intimacies experienced by Indigenous peoples?\n\n2) How are musical soundscapes and musical sonic intimacies archived in indigenous bodies? My tactic\, here\, is to work outward from my own positionality as a Native Hawaiian woman raised in a Hawaiian household and shaped by decades of research on Hawaiian music and dance performance. I propose to outline my thoughts by strolling down a path of discovery. I invite you to join me as we gather bits and pieces along the way\, so that we might work together toward a view of an ethnomusicological practice that is resonant with Indigenous ways of being in the world.\n\nAmy Kuʻuleialoha Stillman is Arthur F. Thurnau Professor\, Professor of American Culture and Musicology\, and Director of Native American Studies at the University of Michigan. She has published widely on historical aspects of Hawaiian and other Polynesian musics and dance. She has also curated and co-produced nine CDs\, and is recipient of the Hawaiʻi Music Award as well as two GRAMMY awards in Hawaiian music. Her current project\, nearing completion\, is a critical edition of Hawaiian repertoire which will appear as one volume in the Music of the United States of America series published by the American Musicological Society.\n\nThis program is organized by the Department of Musicology at the University of Michigan School of Music\, Theatre & Dance. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Making Books with Virginia Woolf
DESCRIPTION:Print your own copy of the first page of Virgina Woolf's \"Mrs. Dalloway\" to take home! Join us on the Diag\, or\, in the event of rain\, in the Shapiro Gallery (third floor Shapiro Library).\n\nIt's widely known that Virginia Woolf was a writer\, but she also started a press out of her home with her husband\, Leonard\, called the Hogarth Press. The couple bought a small letterpress and set it up in their dining room\, producing many of Woolf's books\, including \"Mrs. Dalloway.\" Hogarth Press ran for nearly 30 years before being absorbed by a larger publisher. Having their own press allowed the Woolfs to decide what got published and get it out into the world directly\, something still shared by small presses today. \n\nThis printing event by the library's Book Arts Studio is in conjunction with the exhibit Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front (https://myumi.ch/G4ewE)\, on display in the Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room from September 3 - December 13\, 2024.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Penny Stamps Speaker Series - Phranc
DESCRIPTION:Phranc\, the All-American Jewish Lesbian Folksinger\, is an internationally acclaimed performer and visual artist whose work uses both humor and anger to interrogate traditional gender perspectives. She writes\, records\, performs\, and creates paper sculptures that tell stories\, document history\, honor Amazons\, and protest injustice. She has forged her butch identity in cardboard\, on stage\, and on album covers. As a teenager she attended The Feminist Studio Workshop at The Woman’s Building where she focused on songwriting and silk-screening. In the late 1970s\, she was a member of bands Nervous Gender and Catholic Discipline in the Los Angeles punk rock scene. As a reaction to punk violence and use of the swastika\, she wrote a song called “Take off Your Swastika” and began identifying on stage as The All-American Jewish Lesbian Folksinger and released her first solo album Folksinger in 1985. She has performed in venues across North America\, Great Britain and Europe including The Getty Center\, Irving Plaza\, Metropol\, and Hammersmith Odeon. She is a Teaching Artist at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Phranc is currently working on a multi-media memoir\, “Phranc Talk.”\n\n\"The Butch Closet\,\" an installation hosted by the Institute for the Humanities gallery\, is a retrospective spanning over 40 years of her life as a queer artist and Cardboard Cobbler. Phranc contextualizes her experience within the historical backdrop of second-wave feminism and queer activism\, exploring the evolution of her butch persona alongside societal shifts in gender identity. Using paper\, cardboard\, thread\, and found materials\, Phranc meticulously recreates personal objects like her Baby Quilt and Lamb Chop Halloween Costume. These handcrafted pieces delve into themes of memory\, personal history\, and nostalgia\, tracing her life against the backdrop of LA's artistic\, musical\, and revolutionary scenes from the 1960s to the present.\n\n“The Butch Closet” opens directly following this event at the Institute for the Humanities gallery with an opening reception and artist meet and greet.\nPhranc is part of Gender Euphoria\, a semester-long explosion of queer artists and art-making. These performances\, exhibitions\, conversations\, and provocations explore how to make art and find queer joy in a state of emergency.\n\nPresented in partnership with the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities. This project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan.\n\nSeries presenting partners: Detroit PBS and PBS Books. Media partner: Michigan Radio.

SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:\"The Butch Closet\" Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the opening reception of *The Butch Closet* immediately following artist Phranc's Penny Stamps Lecture at the Michigan Theater.\n\nIn the multi-media installation *The Butch Closet*\, artist Phranc illustrates her life stories as a queer artist\, Jewish lesbian folk singer\, and \"cardboard cobbler.\" By meticulously re-creating personal objects and pieces of clothing out of paper\, cardboard\, thread\, and paint\, she revisits her own history\, contextualizing her experiences as an iconic performer\, and maker\, constructing\, reconstructing\, and re-imagining her image against a larger historical context of second-wave feminism and queer activism. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet *is the second iteration of the project\, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works.

SUMMARY:Performance:William Prince
DESCRIPTION:Guided by a practical yet profound gratitude\, William Prince’s songs convey the power of wonder and humility. A masterclass in skillful simplicity\, Prince’s songwriting is grounded in a balance between the personal and the universal\, his own moments of self-discovery and the larger questions we face together. Prince offers what’s true for himself in whatever way it is helpful. Grace is not a final state but a process.\n\nOver four albums\, with his newest Stand in the Joy just released\, Prince has created a body of work that traces a remarkable journey. From the giant first step taken with his award-winning debut\, Earthly Days\, which introduced Prince to the world\, through releasing two full albums in 2020 – Reliever and Gospel First Nation – in the midst of chaos and confusion\, William Prince’s discography finds its steadying\, timeless appeal in his rich voice and assured restraint.\n\nhttps://www.williamprincemusic.com/
