SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Let the Earth Breathe. Photo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored and presented by the Wallenberg Medal and Lecture\, the African Studies Center\, and the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies.\n----\nLet the Earth Breathe: Photo Exhibition\nby Nnimmo Bassey\, 2024 Wallenberg Medalist\, Architect\, Poet\, and African Environmental Activist\; and Omolade Adunbi\, African Studies Center Director\n\nPhoto Exhibition: People Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution -\nOpening Reception: 3:30 PM (Light refreshments served)\nGalleryDAAS\, Haven Hall\, Ground Floor\, Room G648\, 505 S State St.\nExhibition Dates: September 9 - October 11\n\nPhoto Exhibition: Living\, Community\, and Polluted Environment\nInternational Institute Gallery\, Weiser Hall\, 5th Floor\, Room 547\, 500 Church St.\nExhibition Dates: September 9 - 27\n\n- - -\nAbout the Photo Exhibition:\n\nThe Niger Delta region of Nigeria has been described as one of the most polluted spaces in the entire world. For over 60 years\, the region has been host to the activities of multinational oil corporations who partner with the Nigerian state in exploiting oil for profit. Oil was first discovered in the region in 1956\, and the first shipment of the commodity to the international market occurred in 1958 with a consignment of about 5\,000 barrels per day (bpd). Production peaked at about 2.5 million bpd\, but today\, because of community protests\, insurgency\, and general disruption to the activities of corporations\, the number hovers between 1.2 million to 1.4 million bpd. While the state has benefited immensely from oil production\, the same cannot be said of the communities that are hosts to pipelines\, flow stations\, and all of the oil infrastructure that has come to define the entire region. Loss of livelihood\, heavily polluted environment\, death\, and displacement have characterized the region’s interaction with multinational oil corporations such as Shell\, Chevron\, ExxonMobil\, Eni\, Total Energies\, etc.\n\nThis exhibition is a bold attempt to shed light on what it means to live in an oil extractive enclave like the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The images showcase the lives lived\, the loss\, perseverance\, and determination to survive.\n\nThe exhibition is divided into two parts. The first part of the exhibition is displayed in the DAAS gallery with the sub-theme “People Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution” and is a demonstration of the everyday lived experiences of the inhabitants of many of the enclaves of the Niger Delta. As depicted in the photos\, people cross polluted rivers to go to school and in search of a means of survival.\n\nGallery visitors are invited to cross from the DAAS Gallery to the International Institute Gallery on the 5th floor of Weiser Hall to see the second part of the exhibition\, “Living\, Community\, and Polluted Environment.” This portion of the exhibition demonstrates community resilience in the face of environmental persecution. It shows everyday life amid oil infrastructure that litters the entire landscape of many of the communities in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.\n\n— - - -\nNnimmo Bassey is an architect\, environmental justice activist\, writer\, and poet. His latest poetry collection is titled I See the Invisible (2023). Other collections include I Will Not Dance to Your Beat(2011) and We Thought It Was Oil But It Was Blood (2002). He is director of the ecological think-tank\, Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).\n\nOmolade Adunbi is a professor of Anthropology\, Afroamerican and African Studies and Law at the University of Michigan. His research examines the dynamics of power\, natural resource extractive practices\, governance\, human and environmental rights\, culture\, transnational institutions\, multinational corporations\, and the postcolonial state. His latest book\, Enclaves of Exception: Special Economic Zones and Extractive Practices in Nigeria (Indiana University Press\,2022)\, offers a new approach to exploring the relationship between oil and technologies of extraction and their interrelatedness to China’s interest in free trade zones and its impact on local livelihoods and environmental practices.\n\n*Nnimmo Bassey’s photos courtesy of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).*

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Butch Closet
DESCRIPTION:In the multi-media installation *The Butch Closet*\, artist Phranc illustrates her life stories as a queer artist\, Jewish lesbian folk singer\, and \"cardboard cobbler.\" By meticulously re-creating personal objects and pieces of clothing out of paper\, cardboard\, thread\, and paint\, she revisits her own history\, contextualizing her experiences as an iconic performer\, and maker\, constructing\, reconstructing\, and re-imagining her image against a larger historical context of second-wave feminism and queer activism. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet* is the second iteration of the project\, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works. As part of the installation\, visitors can peer into a closet built in the center of the gallery designed by the artist. Conceptually\, the space shifts from inside to outside\, public and private\, and explores themes of visibility and that which remains inaccessible or unseen.\n\nAbout the artist:\nPhranc is a jewish lesbian folksinger and queer artist who uses song\, painting and sculpture to champion personal identities and illustrate the struggle\, survival\, and victory of the queer individual. An internationally acclaimed and award winning performer. Phranc’s work integrates humor and a butch lesbian aesthetic. Her current project\, Phranc Talk: The Butch Closet\, is a multi-media memoir that spans her 40-year career. Phranc lives and works in Santa Monica\, California and Vancouver\, British Columbia.\n\n*Phranc is the 2024 Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.*

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

However\, writing the uncanny can be an act of resilience and survival by the oppressed. Over the years\, I’ve noticed that my writing has benefited most from mentors who balance practicality with the stars. I longed for a class that would show me how to hew closer to human experience while keeping one eye on the ineffable. This class will explore the rigorous craft behind breaking the laws of physics in fiction and creative non-fiction.* I’ll share personal meters of classification and offer methods and tips on rendering the profound mundane. Writers will leave with prompts designed to move them into new parts of their creativity\, and a reading/film/art list to continue the learning. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Zongming Ma\, Professor\, Department of Statistics and Data Science\, Yale University
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The need for multimodal data integration arises naturally when multiple complementary sets of features are measured on the same sample. Under a dependent multifactor model\, we develop a fully data-driven orchestrated approximate message passing algorithm for integrating information across these feature sets to achieve statistically optimal signal recovery. In practice\, these reference data sets are often queried later by new subjects that are only partially observed. Leveraging on asymptotic normality of estimates generated by our data integration method\, we further develop an asymptotically valid prediction set for the latent representation of any such query subject. We demonstrate the prowess of both the data integration and the prediction set construction algorithms on a tri-modal single-cell dataset.\n\nhttps://zmastat.github.io/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Kelly Church & Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: September 13 – December 7\, 2024Opening Reception: September 19\, 2024\n\nKelly Church &amp\; Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue is a major exhibition that centers the subjectivities of two contemporary Indigenous artists whose practices have sustained and bolstered the relevance of the age-old Anishinaabe practice of black ash basket-making in the 21st century. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter\, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors)\, young folx\, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories\, as well as those of survivance and resilience\, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps\, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA\, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing\, thinking\, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus\, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women’s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers\, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on\, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole\, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works\, including 15-17 new works. Together\, the exhibition offers an incisive critique of the colonial\, racist paradigm of systemic erasure and assimilation that continues to this day\, with the ongoing crises of missing and murdered Indigenous women\, culture wars\, and climate change that threaten Indigenous ways of living\, sustenance\, and making. \nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra with Curatorial Assistant Zoi Crampton.\nStamps Gallery is grateful to Michigan Humanities and U-M Arts Initiative for generously supporting the exhibition and programs.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

Lastly\, learning to meditate by being mindful of your heart will connect you with yourself by listening to your heart’s voice. \n\n*Why Meditate?*\n\nWhile physical fitness keeps our bodies in shape\, meditation is an exercise for the mind and mental wellness. In addition to the measurable benefits mentally and physically\, many people benefit from an unquantifiable inner poise and harmony. \n\n*Please take Learn to Meditate session if you are new to the practice. These sessions are offered Monthly.* https://events.umich.edu/event/128708\n\n*Event Details*\n\nHeartfulness Guided Meditation \nFridays from 12-12:30 p.m. ET (except during university season days / holidays)\nJoin Via Zoom Meeting\nRegister to receive Passcode (see “Related links”\n\n\nThis wellness program is coordinated by ITS Teaching & Learning and provided at no cost by heartfulness.org.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Self-\, System- & Group-Blame: Black Working-Class Jobseekers' in the Precariat Economy
DESCRIPTION:Within the context of increasing precarity in the labor market\, this study seeks to understand how young\, racialized and economically disadvantaged jobseekers make sense of opportunity. While studies show that American white-collar workers embody self-blame instead of structural critique in their assessments of the modern labor market\, we show the complicated\, sometimes contradictory ways Black disadvantaged jobseekers think about unemployment and the broader economic landscape. Using 66 in-depth interviews with Black sub-baccalaureate job seekers\, we expose a complicated picture of how these workers understand the modern economy. Contrary to previous studies\, we find respondents who are deeply critical of social structures\, calling out schools and educational systems as failing Black communities. At the same time\, in other domains\, respondents do showcase deep self-blame and even a deeper\, racialized group-blame in their viewpoints on job availability and unemployment. Finally\, in simultaneous system-critique and self-affirmation rather than blame\, respondents are extremely enthusiastic about what they see as the next frontier of social mobility: namely\, online entrepreneurship. In considering this unsettled approach\, we understand how race\, class\, and extended-periods of unemployment and marginalization influences the subjective experiences of jobseekers\, how self-blame and system-blame can co-exist\, and where opportunities and challenges to Black worker power lie.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Allocation Mechanisms with Mixture-Averse Preferences
DESCRIPTION:Consider an economy with equal amounts of N types of goods\, to be allocated to agents with strict quasi-convex preferences over lotteries. We show that ex-ante\, all Pareto efficient allocations give almost all agents lotteries over at most two outcomes. Therefore\, even if all preferences are the same\, some identical agents necessarily receive different lotteries. Our results provide a simple criterion to show that many popular allocation mechanisms are ex-ante inefficient. Assuming the reduction axiom\, social welfare deteriorates by first randomizing over these binary lotteries. Efficient full ex-ante equality is achieved if agents satisfy the compound independence axiom.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GL-algebras and the Noetherianity problem (combinatorics seminar)
DESCRIPTION:Draisma recently proved that finite length polynomial representations of the infinite general linear group GL are topologically GL-noetherian\, i.e.\, the descending chain condition holds for GL-stable closed subsets. The scheme-theoretic variant of this theorem is a major open problem in the area. I will briefly outline the rich history of this problem and provide a negative answer in characteristic two.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | New (Non-)Supersymmetric Phases in N=4 SYM
DESCRIPTION:In this work\, we extend our current understanding of the phase diagram of N=4 SYM at any given set of charges (Microcanonical Ensemble) by proposing various new phases. These new phases correspond to hairy black hole solutions in the bulk gravitational theory and are easier to construct and analyze due to the emergence of a \"Non-interacting\" picture. The new phases continue to exist even in the supersymmetric limit and contribute to an extra parameter (amount of \"hair\") worth of solutions. The presence of new supersymmetric solutions predicts a phase transition in the superconformal index of N=4 SYM.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Algebraic Geometry: Complete Intersections of Two Quadrics in Projective Space
DESCRIPTION:Complete intersections in projective space are\, behind hypersurfaces\, perhaps the easiest varieties to study\, but even in simple cases can have interesting geometry. In the simplest non-trivial case of a complete intersection we can intersect two smooth quadric hypersurfaces\, and even in this case the resulting variety X turns out to be worthy of study. I will discuss some of the interesting aspects\, including the rationality of X and how one can associate to X a hyperelliptic curve (under a condition on the parity of dim X).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture\, Anne Kort\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Extant mammals move in many ways\, from walking and running to swimming and climbing. How can we compare locomotion across taxa\, both extant and extinct\, to understand how these different styles of movement evolved through time? For any organism\, locomotion is a complex combination of (1) its capacity for movement as constrained by its morphology\, (2) the behaviors that the organism employs within its biomechanical limits\, and (3) the habitat(s) through which the organism moves. Traditionally\, this complexity is collapsed into several broad locomotor categories\, like arboreal\, terrestrial\, or cursorial\, because postcranial fossils and modern ecological data are often extremely limited. I will present two cases where exceptional data allows for more nuanced comparison of locomotion across mammals. First\, in extant mammals\, GPS tracking data records locomotor behavior: how far and where individuals choose to travel. I used data from an online database\, Movebank\, to measure the daily distance travelled by different species of mammals. I took skeletal measurements from specimens in the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology (UMMZ) for the same species to look at how morphology corresponded with distance moved. For the second case\, I will discuss the preservation of partial skeletons in the Eocene Bridger Formation of Wyoming. Often\, postcranial fossils are isolated bones without good identifiers and locomotion must be inferred from the function of a single bone or joint. The Bridger Formation\, however\, has produced a number of exceptional partial skeletons\, including for “archaic” mammals\, groups which have gone completely extinct. I will show how these can be used to examine the interaction between different elements of the skeleton in relation to locomotion.

SUMMARY:Performance:Phranc in Flint: Butch Essentials
DESCRIPTION:Join the Institute for the Humanities' Woodhead Visiting Artist Phranc for an evening of music and bow-tie making at Flint ArtWalk. Drop by between 6pm and 9pm for light snacks and a chance to meet Phranc\, a self-professed queer artist\, Jewish lesbian folksinger\, and cardboard cobbler.\n\nThis event is presented in collaboration with the U-M Flint Center for Gender and Sexuality and Riverbank Arts.\n\nPhranc's installation *The Butch Closet* runs Sept. 12-Oct. 25 at the Institute for the Humanities Gallery. \n\nAbout the installation:\nIn the multi-media installation *The Butch Closet*\, artist Phranc illustrates her life stories as a queer artist\, Jewish lesbian folk singer\, and \"cardboard cobbler.\" By meticulously re-creating personal objects and pieces of clothing out of paper\, cardboard\, thread\, and paint\, she revisits her own history\, contextualizing her experiences as an iconic performer\, and maker\, constructing\, reconstructing\, and re-imagining her image against a larger historical context of second-wave feminism and queer activism. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet *is the second iteration of the project\, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works. As part of the installation\, visitors can peer into a closet built in the center of the gallery designed by the artist. Conceptually\, the space shifts from inside to outside\, public and private\, and explores themes of visibility and that which remains inaccessible or unseen.

SUMMARY:Performance:Dear Diary\, Here's a Joke For You
DESCRIPTION:\"Dear Diary: Here's a Joke For You\" features seven diverse comedians whose material encapsulates real moments of the human experience. Topics range from uncomfortable encounters\, daily challenges\, and the experience of loss. Through the powerful rhetorical device of humor\, these stories transform into moments of empowerment and reclamation of one's body and identity. Co-sponsored by the Center for World Performance Studies\, \"Dear Diary\" reveals how stand-up comedy is made up of creative risks and promotes social justice within performance. \nPlease contact Julianna Loera-Wiggins (wigginsj@umich.edu) with questions.\n\nFeatured Performers:\n\n*Vivian Burgett* started doing comedy to cope with having the most boring job ever: research administration. She’s performed her blend of dark and nerdy comedy all over Southeast Michigan including at her monthly open mic \"Fem Feedback\" which she runs for female and trans comedians. She has shared the stage with Katherine Blanford and DJ Sandhu and can frequently be found performing at friends’ weddings because\, that’s right\, she’s the only one who’s still single!\n\n*Julianna Loera-Wiggins* is a producer\, comedian\, and PhD Candidate. She should be finishing her dissertation\, but instead performs stand-up comedy with her own perspectives on growing up Mexican American and living in the Midwest. \n\n*Sam Rager* has been sharing her disarmingly dark perspective with audiences for over a decade. Rager has been a headliner at both the inaugural Detroit Women of Comedy Festival\, inaugural Stand U.P. Festival and featured in Hour Magazine. Named a rising star in Detroit’s comedy scene by 101.9 WDET\, her debut album Trigger Warning can be heard on SiriusXM and all streaming platforms.\n\n*Andrew Yang* was voted “Best Comedian in Washtenaw County” in 2022 and 2023 by Current Magazine\, Andrew Yang is a Michigan comic who runs shows at a punk rock venue in the Blind Pig and is a founder of the Tree Town Comedy Festival. Andrew has performed on festivals across the country including the Upper Left Comedy Festival in Seattle\, Let’s Fest in Indianapolis\, and the Treefort Music Festival in Boise. He has also been featured on NPR.\n\n*Jacob Barr* is a young comic who has been performing since 2015. He uses his disability and unique life experiences to make people laugh....or scared. In the past he has opened for Big Jay Oakerson\, Chris Gethard\, Dusty Slay\, and Joe list. Jacob was most recently seen as a breakout star on Kill Tony with \"Donald Trump\" and \"Joe Biden.\"\n\n*Robert Jenkins* combines his quick wit and sharp words with a disarming delivery to leave you wondering if you just heard what you thought you heard.\n\n*Alaina Bamfield* is a stand up comedian with strong roots in the Michigan comedy scene. In 2023\, Bamfield moved to the east coast and made Brooklyn\, NY her home base. Participating in multiple festivals such as Motor City Comedy Festival\, Tree Town Comedy Festival\, and Savage Henry Comedy Festival. Alaina has opened for comedians such as Dave Attell\, Sam Tallent\, Joe Machi\, and more.
