SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Let the Earth Breathe. Photo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored and presented by the Wallenberg Medal and Lecture\, the African Studies Center\, and the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies.\n----\nLet the Earth Breathe: Photo Exhibition\nby Nnimmo Bassey\, 2024 Wallenberg Medalist\, Architect\, Poet\, and African Environmental Activist\; and Omolade Adunbi\, African Studies Center Director\n\nPhoto Exhibition: People Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution -\nOpening Reception: 3:30 PM (Light refreshments served)\nGalleryDAAS\, Haven Hall\, Ground Floor\, Room G648\, 505 S State St.\nExhibition Dates: September 9 - October 11\n\nPhoto Exhibition: Living\, Community\, and Polluted Environment\nInternational Institute Gallery\, Weiser Hall\, 5th Floor\, Room 547\, 500 Church St.\nExhibition Dates: September 9 - 27\n\n- - -\nAbout the Photo Exhibition:\n\nThe Niger Delta region of Nigeria has been described as one of the most polluted spaces in the entire world. For over 60 years\, the region has been host to the activities of multinational oil corporations who partner with the Nigerian state in exploiting oil for profit. Oil was first discovered in the region in 1956\, and the first shipment of the commodity to the international market occurred in 1958 with a consignment of about 5\,000 barrels per day (bpd). Production peaked at about 2.5 million bpd\, but today\, because of community protests\, insurgency\, and general disruption to the activities of corporations\, the number hovers between 1.2 million to 1.4 million bpd. While the state has benefited immensely from oil production\, the same cannot be said of the communities that are hosts to pipelines\, flow stations\, and all of the oil infrastructure that has come to define the entire region. Loss of livelihood\, heavily polluted environment\, death\, and displacement have characterized the region’s interaction with multinational oil corporations such as Shell\, Chevron\, ExxonMobil\, Eni\, Total Energies\, etc.\n\nThis exhibition is a bold attempt to shed light on what it means to live in an oil extractive enclave like the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The images showcase the lives lived\, the loss\, perseverance\, and determination to survive.\n\nThe exhibition is divided into two parts. The first part of the exhibition is displayed in the DAAS gallery with the sub-theme “People Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution” and is a demonstration of the everyday lived experiences of the inhabitants of many of the enclaves of the Niger Delta. As depicted in the photos\, people cross polluted rivers to go to school and in search of a means of survival.\n\nGallery visitors are invited to cross from the DAAS Gallery to the International Institute Gallery on the 5th floor of Weiser Hall to see the second part of the exhibition\, “Living\, Community\, and Polluted Environment.” This portion of the exhibition demonstrates community resilience in the face of environmental persecution. It shows everyday life amid oil infrastructure that litters the entire landscape of many of the communities in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.\n\n— - - -\nNnimmo Bassey is an architect\, environmental justice activist\, writer\, and poet. His latest poetry collection is titled I See the Invisible (2023). Other collections include I Will Not Dance to Your Beat(2011) and We Thought It Was Oil But It Was Blood (2002). He is director of the ecological think-tank\, Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).\n\nOmolade Adunbi is a professor of Anthropology\, Afroamerican and African Studies and Law at the University of Michigan. His research examines the dynamics of power\, natural resource extractive practices\, governance\, human and environmental rights\, culture\, transnational institutions\, multinational corporations\, and the postcolonial state. His latest book\, Enclaves of Exception: Special Economic Zones and Extractive Practices in Nigeria (Indiana University Press\,2022)\, offers a new approach to exploring the relationship between oil and technologies of extraction and their interrelatedness to China’s interest in free trade zones and its impact on local livelihoods and environmental practices.\n\n*Nnimmo Bassey’s photos courtesy of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).*

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Butch Closet
DESCRIPTION:In the multi-media installation *The Butch Closet*\, artist Phranc illustrates her life stories as a queer artist\, Jewish lesbian folk singer\, and \"cardboard cobbler.\" By meticulously re-creating personal objects and pieces of clothing out of paper\, cardboard\, thread\, and paint\, she revisits her own history\, contextualizing her experiences as an iconic performer\, and maker\, constructing\, reconstructing\, and re-imagining her image against a larger historical context of second-wave feminism and queer activism. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet* is the second iteration of the project\, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works. As part of the installation\, visitors can peer into a closet built in the center of the gallery designed by the artist. Conceptually\, the space shifts from inside to outside\, public and private\, and explores themes of visibility and that which remains inaccessible or unseen.\n\nAbout the artist:\nPhranc is a jewish lesbian folksinger and queer artist who uses song\, painting and sculpture to champion personal identities and illustrate the struggle\, survival\, and victory of the queer individual. An internationally acclaimed and award winning performer. Phranc’s work integrates humor and a butch lesbian aesthetic. Her current project\, Phranc Talk: The Butch Closet\, is a multi-media memoir that spans her 40-year career. Phranc lives and works in Santa Monica\, California and Vancouver\, British Columbia.\n\n*Phranc is the 2024 Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.*

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CMENAS 2024 Fall Colloquium Series. The Walls Have Eyes: Surviving Migration in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:From robo-dogs to drones to biometrics\, high-risk technologies now impact every aspect of migration. Based on years of researching borderlands across the world\, lawyer and anthropologist Petra Molnar’s book\, The Walls Have Eyes is a global story—a dystopian vision turned reality\, where your body is your passport and matters of life and death are determined by algorithm. Examining how technology is being deployed by governments on the world’s most vulnerable with little regulation\, Molnar shows us how borders are now big business\, with defense contractors and tech start-ups alike scrambling to capture this highly profitable market.\n \n The Walls Have Eyes reveals the profound human stakes of the sharpening of borders around the globe\, foregrounding the stories of people on the move and the daring forms of resistance that have emerged against the hubris and cruelty of those seeking to use technology to turn human beings into problems to be solved.\n \n Petra Molnar is a lawyer and anthropologist specializing in migration\, technology\, and human rights. She is the Associate Director of the Refugee Law Lab at York University and a Faculty Associate at Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society. Her first book is called The Walls Have Eyes: Surviving Migration in the Age of Artificial Intelligence and was published with The New Press in May 2024.\n\nRegister here: https://myumi.ch/6yQJ3

We will describe a modal extension of propositional logic called S4 and its Kripke semantics\, introducing propositional logic along the way. We'll then revisit some of the original issues motivated by natural language and possibly some mathematical applications.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Redshifts by Breakfast but what is for lunch? From DESI to Stage-5 Spectroscopy
DESCRIPTION:The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) is an ultra-efficient multi-object spectrograph installed on the Mayall telescope. DESI routinely collects spectra from ~2 million objects per month\, and delivers nightly redshifts in time for morning coffee. The DESI survey is now more than 60% complete\, and so planning for future campaigns is beginning in earnest. I will describe the DESI \"Stage-4\" experiment\, with a focus on how the design of the DESI instrument enables the survey to study dark energy. I will then present a proposal for an upgraded \"DESI-2\" survey\, which would\, in part\, survey higher-redshift sources to probe early dark energy and the growth of structure in the matter-dominated regime. Finally\, I will detail requirements to achieve a \"Stage-5\" experiment\, which could be met by upgrading the Mayall and Blanco telescopes and installing augmented DESI-type devices at each of these facilities. I will outline proposed designs for such instruments\, and the path towards realizing these designs!

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Invalid with Any Code
DESCRIPTION:Running complex analyses has become easier with the ability to Google commands or even use ChatGPT for writing code. People now grab data from anywhere they can get it\, run sophisticated analyses\, and put out interesting findings in public and scientific press. Then you find out their work is based on a dataset that has 95% missing data and asked four questions total. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of working with data\, and even better if you find something novel\, but the findings are only as good as the underlying data. Increasingly\, journals retract publications due to falsified or misleading data\, analyses\, or citations. \n\nThis session emphasizes the importance of understanding the basics – who\, what\, when\, where\, and how – of data collection before celebrating any results\, yours or others’\, and demonstrates the value of ICPSR metadata in that regard.\n\nPresenter(s):\n>Lynette Hoelter\, Archivist\n\nThis webinar will be recorded\, and the recording and slides (when available) will be available in the 2024 Data Fair YouTube playlist at https://myumi.ch/1bgyR.\n\nZoom FAQs are available at http://myumi.ch/kx2oo.\n\nThis webinar is part of the 2024 ICPSR Data Fair: Anchored in Data Reality. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series: The Social Psychology of Systemic Racism (Nick Camp)
DESCRIPTION:The first seminar in the series will be given by series organizer Nick Camp.\n\nRacial disparities in policing are profound and accompanied by equally persistent gaps in trust. Analyses of these and other inequities are often bifurcated between institutional and individual levels of analysis. In this talk\, Nick Camp describes how everyday contacts between the public and doctors\, teachers\, or police officers—institutional interactions—bridge these levels. Organizations direct and coordinate these agents' individual discretion\; at the same time\, individual agents relate to the public in ways institutions themselves cannot. The dual nature of these encounters links individual and dyadic processes to organizational and institutional ones. Using police stops as a paradigmatic example\, Nick Camp illustrates how institutional interactions contribute to racial gaps in police‐community trust\, how they can be used as a platform for changing the relationship between law enforcement and the public\, and how they can inform our understanding of inequality in other settings. \n\nTalks in this series will be held Mondays from 3:30 to 5\, starting Sept. 16. \nIn person: ISR Thompson 1430\nAs permissions allow\, seminars are later posted to our YouTube playlist.\n\nGroup Dynamics Seminar Series\nThe Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent seminars have included themes such as political polarization\, cultural psychology\, and evolution & human behavior.\n\nWhat are the points of connection between structures and individuals when we think about bias? In the Fall 2024 RCGD Seminar Series “The Social Psychology of Systemic Racism\,” an all-star lineup of behavioral and political psychologists will define what\, in their words\, makes systemic racism systemic\, and how extra-individual levels of analysis could be incorporated in social psychological theories and methods.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:State Proposals for Single Payer Health Insurance Systems: Policy Visions and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:The United States is the only high-income country without some form of universal health insurance. In addition to national proposals for universal coverage\, over 20 state legislatures have introduced proposals for health insurance reform including single-payer plans. In this Omenn-Darling Health Policy Talk\, experts will discuss the design and potential benefits of state-based single payer health insurance systems along with their economic and political challenges. Moderated by John Ayanian\, director of the University of Michigan Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation\, panelists include Michigan state representative Carrie Rheingans\, Ohio state representative Michele Grim\, Robin Lunge from Vermont’s Green Mountain Care Board\, and Ford School professor and health policy expert Paula Lantz.\n\nSpeaker bios:\n\nMichigan State Representative Carrie Rheingans is serving her first term representing the 47th House District. As the only Michigan legislator with a Master of Public Health\, she believes that every policy issue is a health issue. Before being elected to office\, Rep. Rheingans was an adjunct instructor at the University of Michigan School of Social Work\, teaching courses in health policy\, community organizing\, and policy advocacy. In addition\, she worked for many health and health policy organizations\, including the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS)\, the Center for Health Research and Transformation (CHRT)\, and multiple HIV and AIDS-related organizations across southeast Michigan. While at MDHHS\, Rep. Rheingans increased substance use disorder Medicaid provider capacity. During her time at CHRT\, she assisted with the roll out of the Affordable Care Act and integrating medical\, behavioral\, and social services in Livingston and Washtenaw Counties. And she has direct experience working in in syringe access programs\, community outreach and safer sex education\, and HIV testing and counseling.\n\nDr. Michele Grim is State Representative in Ohio House District 43. During her freshman term in the legislature\, she has advocated for health care for all\, comprehensive gun legislation\, laws to keep domestic violence survivors safe\, and protecting child influencers. She is one of the joint sponsors of the Ohio Health Care Plan which would create universal health care in the state of Ohio. Representative Grim was an at-large member of the Toledo City Council in 2022. While on council\, she led the effort to allocate American Rescue Plan dollars for medical debt relief for tens of thousands of Toledoans and Lucas County residents. Before her work as a legislator\, she served in various roles at non-profit\, government\, and academic institutions. She is also a committed leader in the struggle to end violence\nagainst women who volunteered as a rape crisis counselor beginning in her teens coordinated sexual assault education and prevention programs at the University of Toledo.\n\nRobin J. Lunge\, JD\, MHCDS is a Member of Vermont’s Green Mountain Care Board. The Board is charged with regulating the health care industry\, including hospitals and insurers. Previously Lunge served as Governor Shumlin’s Director of Health Care Reform for close to 6 years\, coordinating health reform efforts for his administration.\nShe also worked as a nonpartisan staff attorney at Vermont Legislative Council for 8 sessions and provided drafting and staff support in health and human services issues to members of the Vermont Legislature. Lunge worked at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities in Washington D.C. as a senior policy analyst on public benefits issues in 2007. Her areas of expertise are federal and state public benefit programs\, health care\, and health care reform.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Combinatorics: Symmetric Functions and the Skein of the Annulus
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we'll explore a connection between symmetric functions and skein theory. We'll begin by reviewing the necessary background on both topics. Then\, we'll discuss a proof by Lukac that there are linearly independent elements $Q_\lambda$ in the skein of the annulus which obey the same multiplication rules as the Schur functions $s_\lambda$.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GLNT: Categorical equivalences in Local Geometric Langlands
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Let F be an equal characteristic local field and G a reductive group. It is known that by type theory that representations of G(F) can be understood as modules over various associative algebras\, called Hecke algebras. In particular tamely ramified principle series are modules of the affine Hecke algebra. Based on this interpretation and a realization of the affine Hecke algebra using equivariant K-theory\, Kazhdan and Lusztig proved the Deligne-Langlands correspondence. A geometrization of such correspondence was studied by Roman Bezrukavnikov\, by proving a coherent realization of the affine Hecke category. In this talk\, I will give an equivalence between certain deeper level Hecke categories with affine Hecke categories of a smaller group H (usually a twisted Levi of loop group LG)\, therefore relating wildly ramified representations with tamely ramified ones of H.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IOE 813: Brainstorming ways to enhance emergency support for teenagers in mental health crisis
DESCRIPTION:About the speaker: \nAndrew M. Fine\, MD\, MPH\, Senior Associate Physician in Pediatrics\, Boston Children's Hospital\, Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine\, Harvard Medical School.\n\nAbstract: \nAs mental health issues among teenagers continue to rise in the U.S.\, pediatric emergency departments are increasingly serving on the frontline. However\, these settings often face limited resources\, stretched staff\, and long wait times for inpatient treatment\, each of which can compromise patient experience and quality of care. It’s a safety net on the cusp of collapse. Together\, along with experts\, clinicians\, and community stakeholders\, we will explore innovative strategies to enhance the experiences of teenagers presenting to the emergency department amid mental health crises. Join us in brainstorming strategies to best support these patients—whether through preventative health\, emergency department care\, or expedited placement—and prevent our safety net from collapsing.\n\nThis event is a part of IOE 813 \"Providing Better Healthcare Through Systems Engineering.\". SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Three Ways of Queering Jewish and Israeli History
DESCRIPTION:MJSA Conference Keynote Lecture: “Three Ways of Queering Jewish and Israeli History”\nIris Rachamimov\nMonday\, September 16\, 6:15 - 7:15 PM\nMichigan Union\, Pendelton Room\n\nIn the past three decades\, queer-identified scholars have been producing studies that deal with Jewish queer subjectivities and sexual practices. Inspired by the rise of queer theory\, researchers the 1990s and the first decade of the 21st century laid the groundwork to “Jewish Queer Studies.” The addition of Trans\, Mizrahi and Israeli queer perspectives expanded the topic significantly in recent years with a plethora of publications in various languages. This lecture aims to reflect on the insights\, potentials and blind spots of three main approaches to queering Jewish and Israeli Studies: \n\n1) The examination of present and historical queer selfhoods. \n2) The development of activist scholarship aimed at generating politically useful knowledge \n3) The adoption of queer theoretical perspectives and terminology to analyze both queer and non-queer modes of life. \n\nThe lecture will attempt to show how queering Jewish Studies could be a very fruitful even for those scholars who do not necessarily identify as queer.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Book Talk: Megan Kimble
DESCRIPTION:Journalist Megan Kimble’s book City Limits: Infrastructure\, Inequality\, and the Future of America's Highways weaves together the origins of urban highways with the stories of ordinary people impacted by our highway-based transportation system. Kimble asks\, “What if\, instead of building our aging roads wider and higher\, we removed those highways altogether?” Kimble will share thoughts on how highway removal\, when done thoughtfully\, can bring new life to a divided city.\n\nIn City Limits\, journalist Megan Kimble tells the story of the origins of urban highways through case studies of fights against highway expansions in Austin\, Houston and Dallas. In Austin\, hundreds of families will lose child care if a preschool is demolished to expand Interstate 35. In Houston\, a young Black woman will lose her brand-new home to a new lane on Interstate 10—just blocks away from where a seventy-four-year-old nurse lost her home in the 1960s when that same highway was built. And in Dallas\, an urban planner has improbably found himself at the center of a national conversation about highway removal. The book also delves into highway removal projects in San Francisco and Rochester.\n\nJoin us for a presentation and discussion of this exciting and timely new book.\nSnacks will be provided.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\nMegan Kimble is an investigative journalist and the author of Unprocessed. A former executive editor at The Texas Observer\, Kimble has written about housing\, transportation\, and urban development for The New York Times\, Texas Monthly\, The Guardian\, and Bloomberg CityLab.\n\nSponsors:\nUrban and Regional Planning Program\nB.S. in Urban Technology Program\nUrban Tech Student Organization\nUrbanism Club\nNeighborhood Institute
