SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Let the Earth Breathe. Photo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored and presented by the Wallenberg Medal and Lecture\, the African Studies Center\, and the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies.\n----\nLet the Earth Breathe: Photo Exhibition\nby Nnimmo Bassey\, 2024 Wallenberg Medalist\, Architect\, Poet\, and African Environmental Activist\; and Omolade Adunbi\, African Studies Center Director\n\nPhoto Exhibition: People Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution -\nOpening Reception: 3:30 PM (Light refreshments served)\nGalleryDAAS\, Haven Hall\, Ground Floor\, Room G648\, 505 S State St.\nExhibition Dates: September 9 - October 11\n\nPhoto Exhibition: Living\, Community\, and Polluted Environment\nInternational Institute Gallery\, Weiser Hall\, 5th Floor\, Room 547\, 500 Church St.\nExhibition Dates: September 9 - 27\n\n- - -\nAbout the Photo Exhibition:\n\nThe Niger Delta region of Nigeria has been described as one of the most polluted spaces in the entire world. For over 60 years\, the region has been host to the activities of multinational oil corporations who partner with the Nigerian state in exploiting oil for profit. Oil was first discovered in the region in 1956\, and the first shipment of the commodity to the international market occurred in 1958 with a consignment of about 5\,000 barrels per day (bpd). Production peaked at about 2.5 million bpd\, but today\, because of community protests\, insurgency\, and general disruption to the activities of corporations\, the number hovers between 1.2 million to 1.4 million bpd. While the state has benefited immensely from oil production\, the same cannot be said of the communities that are hosts to pipelines\, flow stations\, and all of the oil infrastructure that has come to define the entire region. Loss of livelihood\, heavily polluted environment\, death\, and displacement have characterized the region’s interaction with multinational oil corporations such as Shell\, Chevron\, ExxonMobil\, Eni\, Total Energies\, etc.\n\nThis exhibition is a bold attempt to shed light on what it means to live in an oil extractive enclave like the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The images showcase the lives lived\, the loss\, perseverance\, and determination to survive.\n\nThe exhibition is divided into two parts. The first part of the exhibition is displayed in the DAAS gallery with the sub-theme “People Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution” and is a demonstration of the everyday lived experiences of the inhabitants of many of the enclaves of the Niger Delta. As depicted in the photos\, people cross polluted rivers to go to school and in search of a means of survival.\n\nGallery visitors are invited to cross from the DAAS Gallery to the International Institute Gallery on the 5th floor of Weiser Hall to see the second part of the exhibition\, “Living\, Community\, and Polluted Environment.” This portion of the exhibition demonstrates community resilience in the face of environmental persecution. It shows everyday life amid oil infrastructure that litters the entire landscape of many of the communities in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.\n\n— - - -\nNnimmo Bassey is an architect\, environmental justice activist\, writer\, and poet. His latest poetry collection is titled I See the Invisible (2023). Other collections include I Will Not Dance to Your Beat(2011) and We Thought It Was Oil But It Was Blood (2002). He is director of the ecological think-tank\, Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).\n\nOmolade Adunbi is a professor of Anthropology\, Afroamerican and African Studies and Law at the University of Michigan. His research examines the dynamics of power\, natural resource extractive practices\, governance\, human and environmental rights\, culture\, transnational institutions\, multinational corporations\, and the postcolonial state. His latest book\, Enclaves of Exception: Special Economic Zones and Extractive Practices in Nigeria (Indiana University Press\,2022)\, offers a new approach to exploring the relationship between oil and technologies of extraction and their interrelatedness to China’s interest in free trade zones and its impact on local livelihoods and environmental practices.\n\n*Nnimmo Bassey’s photos courtesy of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).*

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Butch Closet
DESCRIPTION:In the multi-media installation *The Butch Closet*\, artist Phranc illustrates her life stories as a queer artist\, Jewish lesbian folk singer\, and \"cardboard cobbler.\" By meticulously re-creating personal objects and pieces of clothing out of paper\, cardboard\, thread\, and paint\, she revisits her own history\, contextualizing her experiences as an iconic performer\, and maker\, constructing\, reconstructing\, and re-imagining her image against a larger historical context of second-wave feminism and queer activism. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet* is the second iteration of the project\, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works. As part of the installation\, visitors can peer into a closet built in the center of the gallery designed by the artist. Conceptually\, the space shifts from inside to outside\, public and private\, and explores themes of visibility and that which remains inaccessible or unseen.\n\nAbout the artist:\nPhranc is a jewish lesbian folksinger and queer artist who uses song\, painting and sculpture to champion personal identities and illustrate the struggle\, survival\, and victory of the queer individual. An internationally acclaimed and award winning performer. Phranc’s work integrates humor and a butch lesbian aesthetic. Her current project\, Phranc Talk: The Butch Closet\, is a multi-media memoir that spans her 40-year career. Phranc lives and works in Santa Monica\, California and Vancouver\, British Columbia.\n\n*Phranc is the 2024 Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.*

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Tuesday Seminar Series - Keystone Predator and Keystone Intransitivity: The Potential Chaos of Competitive Coexistence
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our ongoing Tuesday Seminar Series.\n\nAbout this seminar: The structure of ecological communities remains enigmatic\, partly due to its dimensionality (many species interacting) and partly due to its network diversity (many ways to “wire” the interactions). It is also a subject of some practical importance\, especially with current concern over the global biodiversity crisis. Venerable concepts\, such as the competitive exclusion principle or the keystone predator hypothesis\, are understood to frequently be embedded within that structure\, and partially responsible for generating it. Here we approach the subject of community structure through a strategic intersection of several particular network modalities – competitive hierarchy\, keystone predator\, keystone intransitivity\, and higher-order trait-mediated effects. Because predation and intransitive competition are both fundamentally oscillatory\, the theoretical framework of coupled oscillators comes into play\, a mathematical structure well-known to be a major source of chaos. We use a set of natural history observations and measurements of a five dimensional system common in the coffee agroecosystem of Puerto Rico to show how the persistence of a subdominant competitor in a competitive hierarchy may be contingent on this particular wiring of the system.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | The War for Chinese Talent in America
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/kZGGy\n\nIn the mid-1990s\, China’s hope for a “reverse brain drain” of overseas scientists\, academics\, and entrepreneurs stalled. So\, in 2001\, Jiang Zemin introduced China’s ‘Diaspora Option\,’ where PRC-born Chinese living abroad could “serve the country” without “returning to the country.” China’s vigorous efforts to gain the knowledge of these overseas Chinese have included an array of programs to encourage scientists\, professors\, and entrepreneurs living abroad to transfer their knowledge back home. Many Chinese working abroad complied\, some to strengthen their former homeland\, others from self-interest.\n \n In 2018\, the Trump Administration declared war on China’s efforts to access this information promoting a McCarthy-like campaign called the “China Initiative.” Hundreds of PRC-born scientists were investigated\, their research careers were seriously harmed\, and more than 100 were fired. Yet none were found guilty of espionage or theft of intellectual property. Dozens of cases never made it to court\, lacking sufficient evidence.\n \n This talk documents China’s “over-the-top” effort to gain the help of immensely talented Chinese who were living and working in the US\, as well as the US government’s harsh counterattack\, and its strategy to disrupt the transfer of US technology to China. The case studies include stories of unknown victims of that campaign whose cases were never made public. It also highlights the harm this war has brought to Sino-American scientific collaboration and the education of Chinese students in America.\n \n David Zweig (PhD\, The University of Michigan\, 1983) is Professor Emeritus\, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology\, Distinguished Visiting Professor of Taipei School of Economics and Political Science\, National Tsinghua University\, Taiwan\, and Vice-President of the Center for China and Globalization (Beijing). He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard in 1984-85\, and received the Humanities and Social Sciences Prestigious Fellowship\, Research Grants Council\, Hong Kong\, 2013-14. For 15 years\, he directed the Center on China’s Transnational Relations at HKUST.\n \n He has surveyed hundreds of Chinese who returned home and many who remain abroad. In 2012\, he briefed Li Yuanchao\, Director of the Organization Department of the CCP\, about why his 1000 Talents Plan was struggling. He was an expert witness in the defense of two Chinese professors under the “China Initiative.”\n \n He has authored or edited ten books\, including \"Internationalizing China and China’s Brain Drain to the U.S.\" (Routledge). Over 40\,000 students have taken his two online classes with COURSERA on domestic Chinese Politics and on China and the World.\n \n His newest book\, \"The War for Chinese Talent in America: The politics of technology and knowledge in Sino-U.S. relations\" came out in July 2024 in the Asia Shorts Series of the Association of Asian Studies\, distributed by Columbia University Press.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CAS Lecture. Nagorno-Karabakh: The Next Chapter
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Armenian Studies at the University of Michigan is honored to host Dr. Philip Gamaghelyan\, a leading scholar and practitioner in conflict resolution\, for a thought-provoking lecture on the evolving dynamics in Nagorno-Karabakh following the Azerbaijani conquest of Artsakh. As an associate professor at the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies at the University of San Diego and author of Conflict Resolution Beyond the International Relations Paradigm: Evolving Designs as a Transformative Practice in Nagorno-Karabakh and Syria (2017)\, Dr. Gamaghelyan brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this critical discussion.\n\nDr. Gamaghelyan's work focuses on the politics of memory in conflict zones and the need for innovative approaches to conflict resolution that move beyond traditional paradigms. As a co-founder of the Imagine Center for Conflict Transformation and managing editor of the Caucasus Edition: Journal of Conflict Transformation\, he has been deeply involved in engaging policymakers\, journalists\, educators\, and social scientists across post-Soviet states\, Turkey\, Syria\, and other conflict regions.\n\nIn this online lecture-discussion\, Dr. Gamaghelyan will critically re-evaluate current conflict resolution interventions in the context of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict\, exploring the reasons for the failures of peacebuilding up to date the possible role that the local and international scholarly community and civil society can play future of the region. Attendees will gain insights into the challenges and opportunities for sustainable peace in Nagorno-Karabakh and the broader South Caucasus\, informed by Dr. Gamaghelyan's extensive research and on-the-ground experience. This event promises to be an illuminating and timely exploration of how conflict resolution can be reimagined in one of the most complex and historically contentious regions of the world.\n\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/92996729099 (Online Only)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student CA Seminar - Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The Cartan-Serre-Grothendieck theorem implies that all the cohomological subtleties associated to a coherent sheaf on a projective space disappear after twisting by a sufficiently high multiple of the hyperplane line bundle. Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity gives a quantitative measure of how much one has to twist in order that these properties take effect. It then governs the algebraic complexity of a coherent sheaf. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion in Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion (DEI) principles and practices are known to have individual and collective benefits as supported by years of evidence. For example\, research has shown the benefits of diverse learning environments (Hurtado et al.\, 2003)\, improved critical thinking and problem-solving skills (Bowman\, 2010)\, and that diverse groups perform better than homogeneous groups (Page\, 2017). Despite the benefits and positive outcomes of DEI\, there is an active effort to discredit and dismantle the progress made by DEI-informed practices. As tracked by the Chronicle of Higher Education\, such efforts have led to 85 bills across 28 states that seek to eliminate DEI offices and DEI training\, among other DEI-related and informed efforts. Such anti-DEI efforts directly impact the states in which legislation has been proposed or passed and a chilling effect on other states where there might be concern of what is to come. Though such efforts present a challenge\, scholars and practitioners across the country are committed to advancing DEI because of the known benefits to the broader human condition. \n\nTo this end\, this panel is for all within higher education\, from current graduate students to senior faculty administrators\, and offers an opportunity to reflect on the critical role each of us plays in ensuring that our institutions continue to provide access to and within higher education\, ensure that systems and structures reflect the needs of all and that all receive critical resources and support to ensure equitable outcomes. Panelists will discuss the current climate for Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion (DEI) within higher education and the challenges that scholars and practitioners face in employing the practices and principles of DEI. Including how we got to this point? How does the current climate shape strategies moving forward? And where do we go from here?\n\nPlease join Dr. Mitchell Chang\, Ph.D. from University of California Los Angeles\, Dr. Liliana Garces\, Ed.D.\, J.D.\, Dr. Demetri Morgan\, Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in a faculty forum on outreach and engagement entitled Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion in Higher Education: \"All Progress is Precarious\" on Tuesday\, September 17\, 2024 from 3:30-5 p.m. in the Prechter Laboratory (Room 2202) at the School of Education Building\, located at 610 E. University Avenue in Ann Arbor. This forum will be moderated by Dr. Elizabeth Birr Moje\, Ph.D.\, Dean of the University of Michigan Marsal Family School of Education\, and is sponsored by the University of Michigan Center for Educational Outreach\, Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion\, National Center for Institutional Diversity\, Marsal Family School of Education\, Rackham Graduate School\, and Gerald R. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Berry Phase Enforced Spinor Pairing Order
DESCRIPTION:We introduce a class of topological pairing orders characterized by a half-integer pair monopole charge\, leading to Berry phase enforced half-integer partial wave symmetry. This exotic spinor order emerges from pairing between Fermi surfaces with Chern numbers differing by an odd integer. Using tight-binding models\, we demonstrate spinor superconducting orders with monopole charges \pm 1/2\, featuring a single gap node and nontrivial surface states. Additionally\, the superfluid velocity follows a fractionalized Mermin-Ho relation in spatially inhomogeneous pairing orders. The concept extends to spinor density waves and excitons.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:DAAS Africa Workshop with Samar Al-Bulushi\, Anthropology (UC-Irvine)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In 2023\, the Kenyan state announced that it was prepared to lead a US-backed multinational police intervention in Haiti\, justifying its role in the language of Pan-African solidarity. This announcement came in the midst of the Kenyan military’s ongoing operations against the militant group Al-Shabaab in neighboring Somalia. What explains Kenya’s emergence as a Global South power with growing international visibility on questions of security? How are contemporary invocations of Pan-Africanism—particularly when wielded by state officials—imbricated in the politics of empire and militarized interventionism? This talk explores the rise of ‘entangled pacifications\,’ wherein seemingly marginal Global South states play increasingly critical roles in the topography of global policing\, counter-insurgency\, and war —with dire consequences for everyday people caught in the crosshairs.\n\n\nBio: Samar Al-Bulushi is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of California\, Irvine. Her book\, War-Making as Worldmaking: Kenya\, the United States\, and the War on Terror\, is forthcoming from Stanford University Press in November 2024. Samar is a non-resident fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft and has published in a variety of public outlets on topics ranging from the International Criminal Court to the militarization of U.S. policy in Africa. \n\nResearch Interests\nGeopolitics\; imperialism\; militarism\; policing\; race\; Kenya\, East Africa\, elites\, diplomacy\; transnationalism & South-South solidarities.\n\nCurrent Research\nMy book War-Making as World-Making: Kenya\, the United States\, and the War on Terror (forthcoming in November 2024 from Stanford University Press)\, argues that Kenya has emerged as a key player in the post 9/11 era of endless war. Since the Kenyan military invaded Somalia in 2011\, Kenya has been engaged in direct combat with the Somali militant group Al-Shabaab\, conducting airstrikes in southern Somalia\, and deploying heavy-handed police tactics at home. Yet Kenya is often dismissed as a proxy force in what many conceive of as an American-led theatre of operations. My book argues that it is only by accounting for the increasingly assertive role of African states— made possible by U.S. security assistance— that we can trace the extension of the war on terror into ever-expansive domains across the continent. Drawing on ethnographic research in the Kenyan cities of Nairobi and Mombasa\, the book brings into focus a landscape of everyday life that remains largely overlooked by those documenting the costs of post 9/11 imperial warfare in Africa.\n\nMy next project\, The Afterlives of Non-Alignment\, explores how African politicians\, activists\, and intellectuals re-engage with the concept of non-alignment in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. While contemporary invocations of non-alignment are not necessarily grounded in a commitment to anti-imperialism\, memories of European colonialism loom large\, as do memories of the Soviet Union’s support for African independence struggles. This project aims to shed ethnographic light on how asymmetrical yet shifting global power relations are interpreted and contested\, shaped simultaneously by colonial legacies of exploitation and inequality\, by affective discourses that invoke memories of these legacies\, and by everyday forms of geopolitical knowledge.\n\nProfessional Background\nI joined the Department of Anthropology in 2019. Between 2017-2019\, I was a University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellow at UCI.\n\nPrior to pursuing my PhD\, I worked for a number of international human rights organizations\, including the Center for Economic and Social Rights\, Parliamentarians for Global Action\, and the International Center for Transitional Justice. I was also a co-producer and co-host of Afrobeat Radio and Global Movements\, Urban Struggles at WBAI Pacifica Radio in New York City.\n\nI am a non-resident fellow at the Quincy Institute and previously served as a contributing editor at Africa is a Country. I have published in a variety of public outlets on topics ranging from the International Criminal Court to the militarization of U.S. policy in Africa.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Reading Group & Reception (Rummage: Museums\, Exhibitions\, and Representation RIW)
DESCRIPTION:Rummage is a Rackham Interdisciplinary Workshop focused on the nexus of exhibition\, collection\, curation\, display\, and representation within museums and museum-adjacent spaces. The group’s name\, rummage\, evokes both a materiality and an intellectual practice characteristic of museum studies more broadly. On the one hand\, rummaging has a tactile quality. It gestures to the human role in how objects are placed and misplaced\, organized and disorganized\, thrown into juxtaposition\, and often randomly re-discovered anew by individuals negotiating various value systems associated with objects. It evokes an image of coming to objects of the past with new eyes and curiosity. On the other hand\, rummaging could also be used to describe an intellectual approach. In posing questions about the how and why certain narratives come to be exhibited and interpreted\, we root around historical understandings of heritage and the power dynamics that lead certain narratives to become dominant. This process is guided by curiosity\, a drive to understand\, and a skepticism of ordering systems. \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Lane Hall Exhibit Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:In Fall 2024\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature works by two exciting visual artists: Rafael Neis and Anne Vetter. \n\nNeis’s exhibition\, “KIN: Us and Our Kinds” assembles a menagerie of queer beings who dwell outside of normative gender and species categories. Across painting\, drawing\, and print\, images of rogue zoology and extravagant gender congregate and commune. “KIN” engages ancient texts and comics\, as well as a love for process and mark-making\, and a disregard for the putative boundaries between abstraction and figuration.\n\nVetter’s photography exhibition\, “Love is Not the Last Room” is made in collaboration with the artist’s family—their parents\, their brothers\, and their partner. It is an examination of play and leisure\, tension and freedom. Through photographs\, Vetter processes how they learned to relate in their most intimate connections\, and how they relate now. This project explores queer familial relationships\, and uses Vetter’s own gender fluidity as a lens to examine the gendered experiences of their family members.\n\nNeis and Vetter’s exhibits will be on view from September 3 - December 6\, 2024. A reception with the artists is planned for September 17 from 5-6:30 PM in the exhibit space.\n\nThe fall exhibits are presented with support from the Department of Women's & Gender Studies\, the Frankel Center for Judaic Studies\, the Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies\, and the CEW+ Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund.\n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Performance:Harvest Gathering co-bill with Rachael Davis and Anne Heaton w/ Frank Marotta\, Jr.
DESCRIPTION:A musical preview leading up to this year’s Earthwork Harvest Gathering\n\nMulti-instrumentalist Rachael Davis is as renowned for her expressive--and explosive--voice as she is for uniting the often disparate worlds of folk\, blues\, country\, and pop. Davis has lent her voice to countless recordings for friends\, film soundtracks\, and even video games\, but it is her intuitive and empathetic understanding of folk music—“the music of folks” as she calls it\, and her original and thoughtful songwriting voice that has earned her fans around the U.S.\n\nSinger-songwriter and pianist Anne Heaton has captured audience imaginations for over fifteen years with her songs that are\, by turns\, \"tender\, barbed and spiritual\" (Washington Post). She's been featured by the New York Times Popcast\, played numerous times on NPR and shared the stage with artists such as Jewel\, Sarah McLachlan and jazz drummer Max Roach. She teaches at Berklee College of Music Summer Programs and is the founder of Soul Songs School\, an online songwriting program. Anne often performs with guitarist\, vocalist and songwriter Frank Marotta\, Jr. and they have played over 1\,000 headlining shows together nationwide.
