SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Let the Earth Breathe. Photo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored and presented by the Wallenberg Medal and Lecture\, the African Studies Center\, and the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies.\n----\nLet the Earth Breathe: Photo Exhibition\nby Nnimmo Bassey\, 2024 Wallenberg Medalist\, Architect\, Poet\, and African Environmental Activist\; and Omolade Adunbi\, African Studies Center Director\n\nPhoto Exhibition: People Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution -\nOpening Reception: 3:30 PM (Light refreshments served)\nGalleryDAAS\, Haven Hall\, Ground Floor\, Room G648\, 505 S State St.\nExhibition Dates: September 9 - October 11\n\nPhoto Exhibition: Living\, Community\, and Polluted Environment\nInternational Institute Gallery\, Weiser Hall\, 5th Floor\, Room 547\, 500 Church St.\nExhibition Dates: September 9 - 27\n\n- - -\nAbout the Photo Exhibition:\n\nThe Niger Delta region of Nigeria has been described as one of the most polluted spaces in the entire world. For over 60 years\, the region has been host to the activities of multinational oil corporations who partner with the Nigerian state in exploiting oil for profit. Oil was first discovered in the region in 1956\, and the first shipment of the commodity to the international market occurred in 1958 with a consignment of about 5\,000 barrels per day (bpd). Production peaked at about 2.5 million bpd\, but today\, because of community protests\, insurgency\, and general disruption to the activities of corporations\, the number hovers between 1.2 million to 1.4 million bpd. While the state has benefited immensely from oil production\, the same cannot be said of the communities that are hosts to pipelines\, flow stations\, and all of the oil infrastructure that has come to define the entire region. Loss of livelihood\, heavily polluted environment\, death\, and displacement have characterized the region’s interaction with multinational oil corporations such as Shell\, Chevron\, ExxonMobil\, Eni\, Total Energies\, etc.\n\nThis exhibition is a bold attempt to shed light on what it means to live in an oil extractive enclave like the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The images showcase the lives lived\, the loss\, perseverance\, and determination to survive.\n\nThe exhibition is divided into two parts. The first part of the exhibition is displayed in the DAAS gallery with the sub-theme “People Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution” and is a demonstration of the everyday lived experiences of the inhabitants of many of the enclaves of the Niger Delta. As depicted in the photos\, people cross polluted rivers to go to school and in search of a means of survival.\n\nGallery visitors are invited to cross from the DAAS Gallery to the International Institute Gallery on the 5th floor of Weiser Hall to see the second part of the exhibition\, “Living\, Community\, and Polluted Environment.” This portion of the exhibition demonstrates community resilience in the face of environmental persecution. It shows everyday life amid oil infrastructure that litters the entire landscape of many of the communities in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.\n\n— - - -\nNnimmo Bassey is an architect\, environmental justice activist\, writer\, and poet. His latest poetry collection is titled I See the Invisible (2023). Other collections include I Will Not Dance to Your Beat(2011) and We Thought It Was Oil But It Was Blood (2002). He is director of the ecological think-tank\, Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).\n\nOmolade Adunbi is a professor of Anthropology\, Afroamerican and African Studies and Law at the University of Michigan. His research examines the dynamics of power\, natural resource extractive practices\, governance\, human and environmental rights\, culture\, transnational institutions\, multinational corporations\, and the postcolonial state. His latest book\, Enclaves of Exception: Special Economic Zones and Extractive Practices in Nigeria (Indiana University Press\,2022)\, offers a new approach to exploring the relationship between oil and technologies of extraction and their interrelatedness to China’s interest in free trade zones and its impact on local livelihoods and environmental practices.\n\n*Nnimmo Bassey’s photos courtesy of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).*

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Butch Closet
DESCRIPTION:In the multi-media installation *The Butch Closet*\, artist Phranc illustrates her life stories as a queer artist\, Jewish lesbian folk singer\, and \"cardboard cobbler.\" By meticulously re-creating personal objects and pieces of clothing out of paper\, cardboard\, thread\, and paint\, she revisits her own history\, contextualizing her experiences as an iconic performer\, and maker\, constructing\, reconstructing\, and re-imagining her image against a larger historical context of second-wave feminism and queer activism. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet* is the second iteration of the project\, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works. As part of the installation\, visitors can peer into a closet built in the center of the gallery designed by the artist. Conceptually\, the space shifts from inside to outside\, public and private\, and explores themes of visibility and that which remains inaccessible or unseen.\n\nAbout the artist:\nPhranc is a jewish lesbian folksinger and queer artist who uses song\, painting and sculpture to champion personal identities and illustrate the struggle\, survival\, and victory of the queer individual. An internationally acclaimed and award winning performer. Phranc’s work integrates humor and a butch lesbian aesthetic. Her current project\, Phranc Talk: The Butch Closet\, is a multi-media memoir that spans her 40-year career. Phranc lives and works in Santa Monica\, California and Vancouver\, British Columbia.\n\n*Phranc is the 2024 Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.*

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Kelly Church & Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: September 13 – December 7\, 2024Opening Reception: September 19\, 2024\n\nKelly Church &amp\; Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue is a major exhibition that centers the subjectivities of two contemporary Indigenous artists whose practices have sustained and bolstered the relevance of the age-old Anishinaabe practice of black ash basket-making in the 21st century. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter\, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors)\, young folx\, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories\, as well as those of survivance and resilience\, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps\, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA\, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing\, thinking\, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus\, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women’s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers\, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on\, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole\, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works\, including 15-17 new works. Together\, the exhibition offers an incisive critique of the colonial\, racist paradigm of systemic erasure and assimilation that continues to this day\, with the ongoing crises of missing and murdered Indigenous women\, culture wars\, and climate change that threaten Indigenous ways of living\, sustenance\, and making. \nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra with Curatorial Assistant Zoi Crampton.\nStamps Gallery is grateful to Michigan Humanities and U-M Arts Initiative for generously supporting the exhibition and programs.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Diffusion without Isomorphism: The Interstitial Politics of the Official Categorization of Blackness in Mexico (1994-2015)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract :\nOver the past thirty years\, Latin American censuses have introduced self-identification questions for people of African descent. After decades of demographic invisibility\, most states in the region now enumerate Afrodescendent populations using several ethnoracial categories of Blackness. Census categories are crucial in estimating the demographic composition and ethnoracial inequality affecting these populations. However\, few studies have examined the conditions that allowed for the heterogeneous diffusion of categories of Blackness in Latin America. This article analyzes Mexico’s 2015 Intercensal Survey\, the first official instrument to enumerate Black people in this country's history\, to uncover the enabling conditions for this shift. Using a convergent mixed methods design\, the analysis shows that the official enumeration of Blackness unfolded through an institutionally liminal space of classification struggles. While the category “Afrodescendant” was endorsed by internationally oriented state actors and ethnohistorical researchers\, “Black” gained legitimacy from activists focused on cultural politics and researchers mobilizing ethnographic knowledge\, and “Afromexican” was supported by activists advocating for development politics and locally oriented state actors. This article advances a constitutive argument that helps explain under what conditions census politics emerge as an interstitial space of contention that challenges the routine exercise of the symbolic power of the state to enumerate its populations.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MCMC\, variational inference\, and reverse diffusion Monte Carlo
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nI will introduce some recent progress towards understanding the scalability of Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods and their comparative advantage with respect to variational inference. I will fact-check the folklore that \"variational inference is fast but biased\, MCMC is unbiased but slow.\" I will then discuss a combination of the two via reverse diffusion\, which holds promise of solving some of the multi-modal problems. This talk will be motivated by the need for Bayesian computation in reinforcement learning problems as well as the differential privacy requirements that we face.\n\nSpeaker bio:\nYian Ma is an assistant professor at the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute\, UC San Diego\, where he serves as the vice chair for the graduate programs. Prior to UCSD\, he spent a year as a visiting faculty at Google Research. Before that\, he was a post-doctoral fellow at UC Berkeley\, hosted by Mike Jordan. Yian completed his Ph.D. at the University of Washington. His current research primarily revolves around scalable inference methods for credible machine learning\, with application to time series data and sequential decision-making tasks. He has received the Facebook research award\, the Stein fellowship\, and the best paper awards at the Neurips and ICML workshops.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Geometry\, Elasticity\, and Other Catastrophes
DESCRIPTION:Advances in the ability to fabricate complex structures stands to revolutionize our understanding of how a material’s mechanical response is imbued by its geometry. This has led to the idea of a “mechanical metamaterial\,” a designed structure whose mechanical properties are substantially different than those of the stuff from which it is made. By exploring the mechanics of disordered and ordered networks of springs\, we have been trying to understand the deep connection between elastic response and geometry. I will tell you about recent theoretical work in which spring networks qualitatively change their mechanical response (from completely floppy to rigid) by small changes in their conformations. These kinds of critical states turn out to be ubiquitous and governed by a hidden topological structure we have only partially understood.

DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we will discuss the definition of matroids and their properties. As alluded to in previous talks\, matroids generalize the notion of linear independence of subsets of some ambient set. We will discuss some examples of matroids and recipes to get them from more concrete objects. Furthermore\, we will define terms such as basis\, spanning sets\, rank\, and flats\, as well as the associated lattice of flats of a matroid\, generalizing ideas like the intersection poset from the theory of hyperplane arrangements.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | Solar Energetic Particles and Space Weather: Causes and Consequences
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nSpace weather has been identified as a national and international priority which\, by some estimates\, could cost the US over $40B a day during an extreme event. Different aspects of space weather affect myriad assets including spacecraft\, astronauts\, commercial airline flights\, power grids\, and even oil pipelines. Solar energetic particle (SEP) events are one component of space weather and the desire to predict their occurrence and characteristics is strong. Despite immense progress over the last few decades in understanding the generation of SEPs and increases in the number of spacecraft measuring them\, pre-dictions are hampered by what we still do not under-stand and by limited observations. In this talk\, we’ll discuss space weather hazards focusing on SEP events – what we know\, what we don’t know\, what we’re missing. We’ll highlight specific space missions\, including Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter\, making revolutionary observations closer to the Sun than ever before.\n\nAbout the Speaker: Christina M. S. Cohen is a research scientist in the Space Radiation Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology. Currently\, her work focuses on energetic particles in space\, particularly those resulting from solar activity\, but she has prior experience studying energetic particles in the Jovian system and the composition of the solar wind. Cohen is involved in the design\, building and testing of instruments that have flown and will fly on a number of NASA satellites as well as analysis of the data returned from them. She is a past president of the Space Physics and Aeronomy section of the AGU\, an AGU Fellow\, Principal Investigator of the Solar Isotope Spectrometer and Cosmic Ray Isotope Spectrometer on Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE)\, and Deputy Principal Investigator on the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun on Parker Solar Probe and on the Low Energy Telescope experiment on STEREO. Cohen has received NASA awards for her work on the Ulysses\, Wind\, Advanced Composition Explorer\, and Parker Solar Probe missions.\n\nThe seminar will be conducted both in person and on Zoom. Please visit MIPSE website for additional information: https://mipse.umich.edu/seminars_2425.php.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic Geometry Seminar: Stability conditions on surface root stacks
DESCRIPTION:Compared to varieties\, vector bundles and derived categories on stacks are less understood. (Bridgeland) stability conditions are effective to study these objects\, however in general they are difficult to construct. In this talk we construct tilt stability conditions on root stacks over smooth surfaces\, and show their deformation dimension is at least as the even rational Chen-Ruan cohomology. I will recall the structure of derived categories of root stacks and the notion of Chen-Ruan cohomology. Then I will show the ideas of proof via 2 key examples. We will also discuss some potential further questions and applications.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RTG Seminar Geometry\, Dynamics\, Topology: Proper affine deformations of positive representations
DESCRIPTION:We show that every positive representation of a free group into SO(2n\,2n-1) admits R^{4n-1}-valued cocycles giving rise to proper affine actions on affine (4n-1)-space. We can explicitly find such deformations using generalized infinitesimal strip deformations inspired by the work of Danciger-Gueritaud-Kassel. We also exhibit a fundamental domain for such a proper action bounded by crooked hyperplanes. This is joint work with Jean-Philippe Burelle.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Energy Transition in Rural America
DESCRIPTION:Contemporary differences between rural and urban areas in America have their roots in long-term demographic\, economic\, technological\, and social factors. In the “On the Front Porch” series\, Tony Pipa (Brookings) and Brent Orrell (American Enterprise Institute) sit down with authors of recent research on issues facing rural America to explore these factors and more. These conversations seek to unpack the unique challenges and opportunities facing rural America and consider policy options to promote prosperity and opportunity outside the nation’s major metropolitan areas.\n\nIn “Farming for Wind in Rural Michigan\,” an episode of the Reimagine Rural podcast\, Tony Pipa captures the story of the trade-offs and decisions that local residents in rural Isabella County Michigan faced while considering the viability of siting a wind farm in their community. This discussion with Sarah Mills\, director of the Graham Sustainability Institute’s Center for EmPowering Communities at the University of Michigan\, will use case studies and analysis to explore the role that rural places will play as the country transforms its energy infrastructure\, how these installations affect rural residents and local governments\, and how federal and state policy choices can shape those impacts.\n\nThis conversation will be hosted at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan as a prelude to the Election 2024 and U.S. Climate Policy event\, to be hosted at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy from 5-7 p.m. on September 19. Viewers may submit questions via X (Twitter) to @BrookingsGlobal using #OntheFrontPorch. \n\nThis event is a part of Election ’24: Issues at Stake\, a Brookings initiative aimed to bring public attention to consequential policy issues confronting voters and policymakers in the run up to the 2024 election. This includes equipping leaders with insights and policy ideas to help them govern in 2025 and beyond.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Between the Sun and the Sidewalk: Screening\, Q&A\, and Reception
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Latine Heritage Month at the University of Michigan with an interactive night of film\, food\, discussion\, and community! Together\, we’ll enjoy a screening of Between the Sun and the Sidewalk\, followed by a Q&A and reception with the documentary’s director\, Helen De Michiel. \n\nBetween the Sun and the Sidewalk follows two fiercely dedicated young Latino political organizers leading a team of new recruits to mobilize their community to support a sugary drink tax. When the state government passes a stealth law to ban all local soda taxes until 2030\, these young activists fearlessly battle the corporate lobbying efforts to block them.\n\nIn their goal to ignite a grassroots movement for health justice\, the young organizers\, Christian and Aurora\, are undaunted. Tested during their fight for local democracy and the right to vote on important issues\, the film’s heroes overcome doubt\, fear\, and powerful resistance as they dare to fight back against the goliath American beverage industry.\n\nThis event is presented by Rackham Graduate School with support from Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs (MESA)\, Ginsberg Center\, Puentes\, Turn Up Turnout\, and the Black Graduate Student Association (BGSA). This event is open to all students\, faculty\, and staff as part of Latinx Heritage Month at the University of Michigan.

SUMMARY:Performance:Bob Mould Solo Electric
DESCRIPTION:A solo performance from the former frontman of Hüsker Dü\n\nBob Mould is an American musician/singer/songwriter now in his fifth decade of making and performing music. Bob has released 15 solo albums since his 1989 solo debut Workbook\, after forming and leading Minnesota punk rock innovators Hüsker Dü starting in 1979. Along with two albums in the group Sugar\, Bob has redefined guitar driven rock across 23 studio albums over the last 40-plus years.\n\nIn addition to a catalog of over 250 songs\, Bob contributed the theme song to TV’s The Daily Show and has served as a creative north star to legions of musicians ranging from Dave Grohl to Billie Joe Armstrong.\n\nBob’s most recent album was 2020’s Blue Hearts\, released to continuing critical acclaim. Rolling Stone said “Blue Hearts gushes more piss and vinegar than Stanley Kubrick could fill a hallway with\, but what makes it jaw-dropping is the precision with which Mould has focused his ire on conservatives\, evangelicals\, homophobes\, while leaving room for some self-criticism as well.” \n\n“The fire in Bob Mould’s belly can’t be extinguished\,” gushed Under The Radar. “Blue Hearts is Mould at his fiercest and most deliberate.”\n\nhttps://bobmould.com/\n\nPresented by The Ark. \n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/5039/5040 for more detail.
