SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Fall 2024 Introduction to Motivational Interviewing\, 20 hours
DESCRIPTION:In Person: This program is offered twice a year for U-M Student Life staff free of charge. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a terrific tool for helping people change behavior. It's especially helpful for medical staff (lifestyle changes and medication adherence) and therapists/counselors for behavior change to support mental health. Its use is being expanded to Student Life advisers\, supervisors and more. Learn basic\, foundational skills for MI\, including spirit (Compassion\, Acceptance\, Partnership\, Evocation)\, OARS (open questions\, affirmations\, reflections\, summaries)\, identifying and responding to change talk and a little on discord (if there is time). Lots of practice in \"real plays\" (you get to work on your own behavior changes that you are ambivalent about--so bring a couple behavior changes you'd like to change! While you won't be an expert at MI when you are done\, you will be able to start the practice\, move forward in your skills\, know how to improve and maybe even want to learn more! Please only register if you can attend all of the training dates\, as each day builds on prior sessions. Lunch provided on the first day. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Let the Earth Breathe. Photo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored and presented by the Wallenberg Medal and Lecture\, the African Studies Center\, and the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies.\n----\nLet the Earth Breathe: Photo Exhibition\nby Nnimmo Bassey\, 2024 Wallenberg Medalist\, Architect\, Poet\, and African Environmental Activist\; and Omolade Adunbi\, African Studies Center Director\n\nPhoto Exhibition: People Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution -\nOpening Reception: 3:30 PM (Light refreshments served)\nGalleryDAAS\, Haven Hall\, Ground Floor\, Room G648\, 505 S State St.\nExhibition Dates: September 9 - October 11\n\nPhoto Exhibition: Living\, Community\, and Polluted Environment\nInternational Institute Gallery\, Weiser Hall\, 5th Floor\, Room 547\, 500 Church St.\nExhibition Dates: September 9 - 27\n\n- - -\nAbout the Photo Exhibition:\n\nThe Niger Delta region of Nigeria has been described as one of the most polluted spaces in the entire world. For over 60 years\, the region has been host to the activities of multinational oil corporations who partner with the Nigerian state in exploiting oil for profit. Oil was first discovered in the region in 1956\, and the first shipment of the commodity to the international market occurred in 1958 with a consignment of about 5\,000 barrels per day (bpd). Production peaked at about 2.5 million bpd\, but today\, because of community protests\, insurgency\, and general disruption to the activities of corporations\, the number hovers between 1.2 million to 1.4 million bpd. While the state has benefited immensely from oil production\, the same cannot be said of the communities that are hosts to pipelines\, flow stations\, and all of the oil infrastructure that has come to define the entire region. Loss of livelihood\, heavily polluted environment\, death\, and displacement have characterized the region’s interaction with multinational oil corporations such as Shell\, Chevron\, ExxonMobil\, Eni\, Total Energies\, etc.\n\nThis exhibition is a bold attempt to shed light on what it means to live in an oil extractive enclave like the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The images showcase the lives lived\, the loss\, perseverance\, and determination to survive.\n\nThe exhibition is divided into two parts. The first part of the exhibition is displayed in the DAAS gallery with the sub-theme “People Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution” and is a demonstration of the everyday lived experiences of the inhabitants of many of the enclaves of the Niger Delta. As depicted in the photos\, people cross polluted rivers to go to school and in search of a means of survival.\n\nGallery visitors are invited to cross from the DAAS Gallery to the International Institute Gallery on the 5th floor of Weiser Hall to see the second part of the exhibition\, “Living\, Community\, and Polluted Environment.” This portion of the exhibition demonstrates community resilience in the face of environmental persecution. It shows everyday life amid oil infrastructure that litters the entire landscape of many of the communities in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.\n\n— - - -\nNnimmo Bassey is an architect\, environmental justice activist\, writer\, and poet. His latest poetry collection is titled I See the Invisible (2023). Other collections include I Will Not Dance to Your Beat(2011) and We Thought It Was Oil But It Was Blood (2002). He is director of the ecological think-tank\, Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).\n\nOmolade Adunbi is a professor of Anthropology\, Afroamerican and African Studies and Law at the University of Michigan. His research examines the dynamics of power\, natural resource extractive practices\, governance\, human and environmental rights\, culture\, transnational institutions\, multinational corporations\, and the postcolonial state. His latest book\, Enclaves of Exception: Special Economic Zones and Extractive Practices in Nigeria (Indiana University Press\,2022)\, offers a new approach to exploring the relationship between oil and technologies of extraction and their interrelatedness to China’s interest in free trade zones and its impact on local livelihoods and environmental practices.\n\n*Nnimmo Bassey’s photos courtesy of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).*

DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Butch Closet
DESCRIPTION:In the multi-media installation *The Butch Closet*\, artist Phranc illustrates her life stories as a queer artist\, Jewish lesbian folk singer\, and \"cardboard cobbler.\" By meticulously re-creating personal objects and pieces of clothing out of paper\, cardboard\, thread\, and paint\, she revisits her own history\, contextualizing her experiences as an iconic performer\, and maker\, constructing\, reconstructing\, and re-imagining her image against a larger historical context of second-wave feminism and queer activism. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet* is the second iteration of the project\, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works. As part of the installation\, visitors can peer into a closet built in the center of the gallery designed by the artist. Conceptually\, the space shifts from inside to outside\, public and private\, and explores themes of visibility and that which remains inaccessible or unseen.\n\nAbout the artist:\nPhranc is a jewish lesbian folksinger and queer artist who uses song\, painting and sculpture to champion personal identities and illustrate the struggle\, survival\, and victory of the queer individual. An internationally acclaimed and award winning performer. Phranc’s work integrates humor and a butch lesbian aesthetic. Her current project\, Phranc Talk: The Butch Closet\, is a multi-media memoir that spans her 40-year career. Phranc lives and works in Santa Monica\, California and Vancouver\, British Columbia.\n\n*Phranc is the 2024 Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.*

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Author Conversation with Alex Beringer \"Lost Literacies: Experiments in 19th Century US Comic Strip.\"
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of the nineteenth century\, figures such as artist Frank Bellew and editor T. W. Strong introduced sequential comic strips into humor magazines and precursors to graphic novels known as “graphic albums.” These early works reached audiences in the tens of thousands. Their influences ranged from Walt Whitman’s poetry to Mark Twain’s travel writings to the bawdy stage comedies of the Bowery Theatre. Most importantly\, they featured new approaches to graphic storytelling that went far beyond the speech bubbles and panel grids familiar to us today. As readers of Lost Literacies will see\, these little-known early US comic strips rival even the most innovative modern comics for their diversity and ambition.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Snigdha Panigrahi\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Statistics\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Abstract. Group lasso penalties are commonly used to estimate sparse models by simultaneously setting groups of variables to zero. When paired with a suitable loss function\, these penalties enable model selection with different types of data\, such as categorical\, count\, and continuous data. However\, carrying out inference in the selected model\, also known as selective inference or post-selection inference\, is quite challenging. There are two main reasons for this. First\, previous selective inference methods for the lasso penalty do not extend to selection with a group lasso penalty\, as there is no straightforward way to describe the selection event. Second\, even for the lasso\, these previous methods are restricted to normal data. As a result\, analysts are limited to less efficient options like data splitting\, where each sample is used for only one of the two tasks\, model selection or inference. \n\nIn this talk\, I will present a selective inference method for models selected with group lasso penalties. The method involves using a new form of randomization with Gaussian noise variables\, resulting in a randomized group lasso estimator. Unlike traditional data splitting\, this method makes use of all available samples for both model selection and inference\, resulting in significantly shorter intervals that adapt to the signal strength in the data. Moreover\, this method provides a unified way to make distribution-free selective inference with a wide class of loss functions\, as opposed to more recent variants of data splitting such as data fission\, that are tailored to specific parametric families.\n\nhttps://snigdha-panigrahi.netlify.app/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Kelly Church & Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: September 13 – December 7\, 2024Opening Reception: September 19\, 2024\n\nKelly Church &amp\; Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue is a major exhibition that centers the subjectivities of two contemporary Indigenous artists whose practices have sustained and bolstered the relevance of the age-old Anishinaabe practice of black ash basket-making in the 21st century. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter\, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors)\, young folx\, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories\, as well as those of survivance and resilience\, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps\, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA\, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing\, thinking\, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus\, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women’s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers\, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on\, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole\, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works\, including 15-17 new works. Together\, the exhibition offers an incisive critique of the colonial\, racist paradigm of systemic erasure and assimilation that continues to this day\, with the ongoing crises of missing and murdered Indigenous women\, culture wars\, and climate change that threaten Indigenous ways of living\, sustenance\, and making. \nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra with Curatorial Assistant Zoi Crampton.\nStamps Gallery is grateful to Michigan Humanities and U-M Arts Initiative for generously supporting the exhibition and programs.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:EIHS Symposium: Home and Exile: Exploring a New Theme
DESCRIPTION:On first glance\, “home” and “exile” appear to be polar opposites\, the one suggesting sanctuary and belonging\, the other displacement and alienation. Without denying the power and importance of these connotations\, this symposium will also explore the entanglements of home and exile and the ambiguities that lurk within. Hakem Al-Rustom takes up this challenge in his work on Armenians who survived the genocide and remained in their ancestral lands but whose presence has been silenced in or erased from the historical record\; Jennifer Dominique Jones’s research explores the fraught relations between Black and queer political identities in the United States\; and Sanne Ravensbergen’s scholarship examines the complicated interplay between Dutch and Indigenous law in Indonesia within the context of Dutch colonialism. For each\, home is not so much a refuge as a site of contestation and ambivalence where the threat—and reality—of displacement or escape both lurks and beckons. \n\nPanelists:\nHakem Al-Rustom (Assistant Professor\, Alex Manoogian Professor of Modern Armenian History\, University of Michigan)\nJennifer Dominique Jones (Associate Professor\; History\, Women's and Gender Studies\; University of Michigan)\nSanne Ravensbergen (Assistant Professor\, History\, University of Michigan)\nJohn Carson (Associate Professor\, History\, University of Michigan\, moderator)\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Racialized Gendered Organizations: A Research Primer
DESCRIPTION:With the rise of research on racialized gendered organizations\, I draw on two distinct industry case studies to outline theoretical and methodological lessons. I will draw on findings from an immigrant services case study and my more recent research on women of color in the corporate sector to illustrate the utility of a multi-level research design that leverages the theoretical tools of Black Feminist theory and organizational theory. By doing so\, I show how my findings help explain the stunted policy reform in both immigration policy and diversity management.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: Harnessing Structural Periodicity for Wave Control Toward Sensing\, Harvesting\, and Space Applications
DESCRIPTION:The study of structural periodicity in engineered materials\, such as metamaterials\, phononic crystals\, and metasurfaces\, has opened new frontiers in wave control. Our research group explores the fundamental principles and advanced techniques for harnessing structural periodicity to manipulate wave propagation for diverse applications in sensing\, energy harvesting\, and space technology. By leveraging the unique properties of these periodic structures\, we demonstrate how they can be used to enhance ultrasonic sensing and nondestructive testing\, improve the efficiency of energy harvesters\, and develop innovative solutions for space applications. The first part of my talk will focus on gradient index phononic crystal (GRIN-PC) lenses conforming pipe-like structures. Conformal GRIN-PC lenses are designed by tailoring unit cell geometry according to a specific refractive index profile. We explore the focusing of multi-mode guided waves at the desired locations (i.e. sensor nodes) along the pipe structure to address the attenuation problem in long-range pipelines. Then\, I will explain how we exploit the negative refraction property of phononic crystals for designing a super lens. Unlike GRIN-PC lenses\, which have at least minimum wavelength resolution as their natural limit\, negative refraction-based PC lenses can potentially overcome the diffraction limit\, which is highly favorable in medical imaging or other applications requiring localized wave intensity in areas smaller than a square wavelength. The second part of my talk will deal with reconfigurable metasurfaces for full wavefront control with an emphasis on energy harvesting of low frequency elastic waves. We fully analyze and design the elastic metasurfaces by tailoring the phase gradient of individual unit structures for different wave functions and present theoretical findings along with experimental validation. The last part of my talk will highlight the potential of metamaterials in space applications\, such as novel in-space manufacturable extended solar arrays and antennas with high precision and mass efficiency.\n\nContact: Silas Alben

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Forks and their uses (combinatorics seminar)
DESCRIPTION:Mutation-finite quivers --- those mutation-equivalent to only a finite number of quivers --- are relatively well-understood objects. However\, their counterpart\, mutation-infinite quivers\, are not. Using a special type of quiver called a fork\, we give two results related to mutation-infinite quivers. First\, we prove that a quiver being mutation-equivalent to a finite number of non-forks is a hereditary property\, i.e.\, one preserved by restriction to any full subquiver. Second\, using only forks and elementary methods\, we show that 3-vertex quivers that are not mutation-equivalent to an acyclic quiver have sign-coherent c-vectors.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Renée Tamblyn\, Universität Bern
DESCRIPTION:Much of the surviving Archean continental crust is comprised of tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) suites\, leading to the question – how did they form? Geochemical\, experimental\, field\, and phase equilibrium forward modeling studies have identified basalt as a likely source of partial melting to form these ubiquitous TTGs\, pointing to the importance of metamorphic processes in the generation of the Earth’s crust. Fractionation of phases such as garnet and plagioclase during partial melting and subsequent fractional crystallization have been shown to shape the major and trace element chemistry of TTGs. Additionally\, the importance of free water available to assist in partial melting has been highlighted\, and likely is sourced from ultramafic lithologies such as komatiites.\n\nKomatiites are ultramafic (MgO > 18 wt. %) volcanic rocks found almost exclusively in Archean greenstone belts. They are extensively hydrated\, as they were serpentinised on the ocean floor after their eruption in oceanic plateaux-type settings. The dehydration of komatiites may play a role in tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) and therefore continental crust formation. Hydrated komatiites can retain their mineral-bound water to significant temperatures\, releasing up to 6 wt.% H2O between 500–800 °C. Burial\, underthrusting\, or subduction of the komatiites would cause them to release their water and trigger partial melting of basalts to form TTGs at these conditions. As such\, it appears that greenstone belts may contain the necessary ingredients to produce TTGs\, including alkaline\, tholeiitic\, and high-Mg basalts\, and komatiites. However\, they also contain Ca-rich sediments (greywackes)\, carbonates\, varied intrusive rocks\, felsic and mafic volcaniclastics\, and other clastic and chemical sediments\, which may also play a role in continental crust genesis. Modeling of partial melting of these lithologies can explore the types of melts produced during water-fluxed melting\, to further understand the processes which formed the earliest continental crust.

And Shouldn't Be This Way\n\nRecent years have witnessed remarkable advancements in AI\, with language and vision models that have enabled progress in numerous applications and opened the door to the integration of AI in areas such as communication\, transportation\, healthcare\, and arts. Yet\, many of these models and their corresponding datasets are W.E.I.R.D. (Western\, Educated\, Industrialized\, Rich\, Democratic) and they are reflective of a small fraction of the population.(*) In this talk\, I will show some of the limitations and lack of representation of current AI models\, and highlight the need for cross-cultural language and vision models that can capture the diversity of behaviors\, beliefs\, and language expressions across different groups. I will also explore ways in which we can address these limitations by developing models that are re-centered around people and their unique characteristics.\n\n(*) W.E.I.R.D. is an acronym widely used in psychology to indicate the limitations of many of the studies carried out in the field

This screening will be followed by a pre-recorded Q&A with the filmmakers.\n\n*Where Olive Trees Weep* offers a searing window into the struggles and resilience of the Palestinian people\, activists\, and journalists under Israeli occupation. It explores themes of loss\, trauma\, and the quest for justice. We also see Dr. Gabor Maté offer trauma-healing work to a group of women who were tortured in Israeli prisons.\n\nThe film gives background to the current crisis in Israel/Palestine and brings to light the lives of people the filmmakers met on their 2022 journey in the occupied West Bank.
