SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Let the Earth Breathe. Photo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored and presented by the Wallenberg Medal and Lecture\, the African Studies Center\, and the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies.\n----\nLet the Earth Breathe: Photo Exhibition\nby Nnimmo Bassey\, 2024 Wallenberg Medalist\, Architect\, Poet\, and African Environmental Activist\; and Omolade Adunbi\, African Studies Center Director\n\nPhoto Exhibition: People Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution -\nOpening Reception: 3:30 PM (Light refreshments served)\nGalleryDAAS\, Haven Hall\, Ground Floor\, Room G648\, 505 S State St.\nExhibition Dates: September 9 - October 11\n\nPhoto Exhibition: Living\, Community\, and Polluted Environment\nInternational Institute Gallery\, Weiser Hall\, 5th Floor\, Room 547\, 500 Church St.\nExhibition Dates: September 9 - 27\n\n- - -\nAbout the Photo Exhibition:\n\nThe Niger Delta region of Nigeria has been described as one of the most polluted spaces in the entire world. For over 60 years\, the region has been host to the activities of multinational oil corporations who partner with the Nigerian state in exploiting oil for profit. Oil was first discovered in the region in 1956\, and the first shipment of the commodity to the international market occurred in 1958 with a consignment of about 5\,000 barrels per day (bpd). Production peaked at about 2.5 million bpd\, but today\, because of community protests\, insurgency\, and general disruption to the activities of corporations\, the number hovers between 1.2 million to 1.4 million bpd. While the state has benefited immensely from oil production\, the same cannot be said of the communities that are hosts to pipelines\, flow stations\, and all of the oil infrastructure that has come to define the entire region. Loss of livelihood\, heavily polluted environment\, death\, and displacement have characterized the region’s interaction with multinational oil corporations such as Shell\, Chevron\, ExxonMobil\, Eni\, Total Energies\, etc.\n\nThis exhibition is a bold attempt to shed light on what it means to live in an oil extractive enclave like the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The images showcase the lives lived\, the loss\, perseverance\, and determination to survive.\n\nThe exhibition is divided into two parts. The first part of the exhibition is displayed in the DAAS gallery with the sub-theme “People Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution” and is a demonstration of the everyday lived experiences of the inhabitants of many of the enclaves of the Niger Delta. As depicted in the photos\, people cross polluted rivers to go to school and in search of a means of survival.\n\nGallery visitors are invited to cross from the DAAS Gallery to the International Institute Gallery on the 5th floor of Weiser Hall to see the second part of the exhibition\, “Living\, Community\, and Polluted Environment.” This portion of the exhibition demonstrates community resilience in the face of environmental persecution. It shows everyday life amid oil infrastructure that litters the entire landscape of many of the communities in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.\n\n— - - -\nNnimmo Bassey is an architect\, environmental justice activist\, writer\, and poet. His latest poetry collection is titled I See the Invisible (2023). Other collections include I Will Not Dance to Your Beat(2011) and We Thought It Was Oil But It Was Blood (2002). He is director of the ecological think-tank\, Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).\n\nOmolade Adunbi is a professor of Anthropology\, Afroamerican and African Studies and Law at the University of Michigan. His research examines the dynamics of power\, natural resource extractive practices\, governance\, human and environmental rights\, culture\, transnational institutions\, multinational corporations\, and the postcolonial state. His latest book\, Enclaves of Exception: Special Economic Zones and Extractive Practices in Nigeria (Indiana University Press\,2022)\, offers a new approach to exploring the relationship between oil and technologies of extraction and their interrelatedness to China’s interest in free trade zones and its impact on local livelihoods and environmental practices.\n\n*Nnimmo Bassey’s photos courtesy of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).*

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Butch Closet
DESCRIPTION:In the multi-media installation *The Butch Closet*\, artist Phranc illustrates her life stories as a queer artist\, Jewish lesbian folk singer\, and \"cardboard cobbler.\" By meticulously re-creating personal objects and pieces of clothing out of paper\, cardboard\, thread\, and paint\, she revisits her own history\, contextualizing her experiences as an iconic performer\, and maker\, constructing\, reconstructing\, and re-imagining her image against a larger historical context of second-wave feminism and queer activism. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet* is the second iteration of the project\, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works. As part of the installation\, visitors can peer into a closet built in the center of the gallery designed by the artist. Conceptually\, the space shifts from inside to outside\, public and private\, and explores themes of visibility and that which remains inaccessible or unseen.\n\nAbout the artist:\nPhranc is a jewish lesbian folksinger and queer artist who uses song\, painting and sculpture to champion personal identities and illustrate the struggle\, survival\, and victory of the queer individual. An internationally acclaimed and award winning performer. Phranc’s work integrates humor and a butch lesbian aesthetic. Her current project\, Phranc Talk: The Butch Closet\, is a multi-media memoir that spans her 40-year career. Phranc lives and works in Santa Monica\, California and Vancouver\, British Columbia.\n\n*Phranc is the 2024 Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.*

SUMMARY:Other:Michigan in Washington Fall 2024 Application Deadline
DESCRIPTION:Deadline for applications to the Michigan in Washington program for Winter 2025 and early admission for Fall 2025.\nThe Michigan in Washington (MIW) program offers an opportunity each year for 20 undergraduates from any major to spend a semester (Fall or Winter) in Washington\, D.C. Students combine coursework with an internship that reflects their particular area of interest (such as American politics\, international studies\, history\, the arts\, public health\, economics\, the media\, the environment\, science\, and technology). The semester in Washington is action-packed. Students work four days a week (32 hours)\, attend an elective one evening a week\, and a policy research course on Friday mornings. They spend their weekends exploring the city and taking in cultural events. Most leave Washington longing to return.\nStudents are free to pursue internships of their choosing. They are coached in internship searching strategies\, networking\, resume and cover letter writing\, and interviewing as part of a professional development class that is taken the semester before going to D.C. Students have interned at the White House\, the Smithsonian\, Congress\, CNN\, Greenpeace\, CBS\, Public Defender’s Service\, Washington Institute for Near East Policy\, NAACP\, The Brookings Institution\, American Enterprise Institute\, National Defense University\, Partnership for Public Service\, Center for American Progress\, Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and many others.\n\nFunding is available for this living and learning program. Every student admitted to Michigan in Washington receives a $1500 scholarship. Funding above this amount is based on financial need.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Prelim Seminar Series - Evolution of “Collecting” Behavior in Deep Sea Carrier Snails
DESCRIPTION:About this seminar: Predicting trait-environment relationships is especially challenging for marine gastropods with highly dispersive planktonic larvae and wide geographic distributions. Opposing selection pressures posed by bathymetric distribution and site heterogeneity synergistically drive the evolution of complex defensive shell morphologies. I will focus on the enigmatic carrier snails (family: Xenophoridae)\, a gastropod family that produce highly sculptured and forms by adorning their shells with “collected” foreign objects for camouflage or physical defence. Are carrier snails species specialized collectors as widely thought? What do they reveal about cryptic diversity and evolution of defensive behaviors in the deep sea? Melding geometric morphometrics\, population genetics\, comparative phylogenetic approaches\, I will unravel bathymetric and populational patterns of defensive behavior evolution in carrier snails and beyond.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CMENAS 2024 Fall Colloquium Series. Uneven Belonging: How Refugee Youth in Jordan Experience Inclusive Refugee Education
DESCRIPTION:Over the past ten years\, global refugee education policy has shifted towards a model of inclusion such that refugees are integrated into national systems. Following the influx of Syrian refugees in 2011\, the Government of Jordan adapted this inclusive model of education whereby refugees attend Jordanian schools\, study the Jordanian curriculum from Jordanian teachers\, often alongside Jordanian students. While this model of integration is upheld for its promise of providing high quality education to all students\, the experiences of refugee students tell a different story. In this presentation\, I will explore the experiences of refugee students from varying national backgrounds\, with a focus on their sense of belonging at the local and national level. I will highlight the ways that refugee youth navigate and negotiate their belonging and point to the uneven outcomes of the inclusive refugee education policy.\n \n Dr Cohen’s research centers on understanding the educational experiences of students and teachers in areas of crisis and conflict\, with a focus on refugees and forced migrants in the Middle East. She is particularly interested in understanding the ways that policies are adapted\, negotiated and implemented by educators and how that\, in turn\, impacts students’ learning. Cohen has conducted research and applied work with students and educators in Jordan\, Morocco\, the United States\, India and Myanmar. She holds a PhD in Comparative and International Development Education from the University of Minnesota\, a MA in International Educational Development from Columbia University Teachers College\, and a BA in Middle Eastern Studies from Columbia University.\n\nRegister here: https://myumi.ch/5yMe3

SUMMARY:Presentation:Developmental Psychology Visiting Scholar Talk: Early Life Stress and Children’s Learning: What Matters Most Might Not Be Obvious
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Lorraine Nadelman Visiting Scholar Fund\n\nDiscovering the processes through which early life experiences affect children’s development is critically important for developing prevention and interventions for youth exposed to adversity\, and also for understanding the basic science of human development and learning. Nearly all research on early experience\, socio-emotional development\, and neurobiology has been anchored on documenting specific (presumably stressful) events that have occurred in a child’s life. Yet\, there is increasing evidence that children’s perceptions of their own experiences and the meaning they construe from what has happened to them might be critical for understanding behavioral\, biological\, and learning outcomes. How can we better embrace this real- albeit messy- complexity of human development? This presentation aims to serve as a catalyst for thinking about these kinds of new future research directions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Single Cell Spatial Analysis Monthly Seminar Series - Kickoff Seminar
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT: Cells make fate decisions in response to dynamic environments\, and multicellular structures emerge from multiscale interplays among cells and genes in space and time. The recent single-cell omics technology provides an unprecedented opportunity to profile cells. However\, those measurements are taken as static snapshots of many individual cells that often lose spatiotemporal information. How to obtain temporal relationships among cells from such measurements or recover spatial interactions among cells\, such as cell-cell communication? In this talk I will first present our newly developed computational tools that dissect transition properties of cells and infer cell-cell communication based on nonspatial single-cell data. Then I will present methods to derive multicellular spatiotemporal pattern and cell-cell communication from spatial transcriptomics datasets as well as computational tools for data integration. Through applications of those methods to several complex systems in development\, regeneration\, and diseases\, we show the discovery power of such methods and identify areas for further development for spatiotemporal reconstruction of single-cell genomics data.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Jet Quantum Imaging of the Nucleus and Next-Generation Calorimeters at the Electron-Ion Collider
DESCRIPTION:I will outline the key scientific goals achievable at the future Electron-Ion Collider through the analysis of particle jets\, with a focus on quantum imaging of the nucleus. Particle jets offer a novel discovery tool for studying electron scattering off polarized protons and heavy nuclei. These studies require a new generation of highly granular calorimeter systems\, whose capabilities can be fully exploited only with AI/ML approaches. I will present ongoing R&D efforts\, along with plans for prototype testing and construction in the near future.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series: The Social Psychology of Systemic Racism (Efrén Pérez)
DESCRIPTION:Sept. 23\, 2024: Efrén Pérez (UCLA)\n\nTaking Stock of Solidarity Between People of Color in U.S. Politics: Accumulated Evidence\, New Challenges\, and Fresh Opportunities\n\nRecent work suggests that solidarity between people of color (PoC) is triggered when a minoritized ingroup believes they are discriminated similarly to another outgroup based on their alleged foreignness or inferiority. Heightened solidarity is then supposed to boost support for policies that benefit minoritized outgroups who are not one’s own—for\nexample\, Black adults become more pro-Latino\, Asian adults become more pro-Black\, and Latino adults become more pro-Asian. In this talk\, Efrén Pérez will discuss his lab’s growing experimental evidence on this proposed mechanism. He will highlight new challenges\nand opportunities to learn more—both theoretically and methodologically—about interminority solidarity in politics. He concludes by discussing new research agendas to advance our understanding about interminority politics in a multiethnic democracy like the United States.\n\nThe RCGD Seminar Series on the Social Psychology of Systemic Racism meets Mondays from 3:30 to 5 at ISR Thompson 1430. When speaker permission is given\, events will be recorded and posted within a few weeks to YouTube.\n\nThe Social Psychology of Systemic Racism\nWhat are the points of connection between structures and individuals when we think about bias? In the Fall 2024 RCGD Seminar Series “The Social Psychology of Systemic Racism\,” an all-star lineup of behavioral and political psychologists will define what\, in their words\, makes systemic racism systemic\, and how extra-individual levels of analysis could be incorporated in social psychological theories and methods.\n\nGroup Dynamics Seminar Series\nThe Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. The seminar series runs every semester on a theme chosen by faculty organizer/s who are affiliated with the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the Institute for Social Research. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent themes have included political polarization\, evolution and human behavior\, and cultural psychology\n\nPérez Bio:\nEfrén Pérez is Full Professor of Political Science and Psychology at UCLA. His research centers on political psychology\, with specific interests in intergroup politics\, group identity\, language and political thinking\, implicit political cognition\, and psychometrics. He has published more than thirty articles in leading general science\, political science\, and psychological science journals\, including Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences\, American Journal of Political Science\, Journal of Politics\, Social Psychological and Personality Science\, Political Behavior\, and Political Psychology. He is also the author of four books\, including Diversity’s Child: People of Color and the Politics of Identity (Chicago University Press) and Voicing Politics: How Language Shapes Public Opinion (Princeton University Press)\, which received the 2023 Robert E. Lane Best Book Award in Political Psychology from the American Political Science Association. In addition to his research\, Efrén directs the Race\, Ethnicity\, Politics\, and Society (REPS) Lab at UCLA.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:STeMS Speaker Series | \"The Languages of Babylonian Astronomical Science\"
DESCRIPTION:Babylonian astronomers were renowned throughout the ancient world both for their observations and predictions. By the middle-to-late first millennium BCE\, when these astronomers wrote down their descriptions of celestial phenomena in the form of omina\, reports\, or diaries\, they did so in the standard language of scholarship of the time — Babylonian\, or what we often call Akkadian. Or did they? Compared to other scholarly texts\, astronomical texts actually show a predilection for terminology and alternative written expressions that make these texts look more like a different language\, Sumerian\, a language that had fallen out of vernacular use more than 1\,000 years earlier. \nBy employing this technical\, almost specialized\, linguistic form\, these astronomers demonstrated a level of expertise that set them apart from other domains of scholarship and presented them as purveyors of scientific truth beyond terrestrial concerns.\n\nJay Crisostomo's research focuses on the languages and intellectual and social histories of the cuneiform cultures of the ancient Middle East. Crisostomo chooses to study and teach the ancient Middle East (roughly ancient Iraq and Syria) because of the vast amounts of contextualized data available mostly on hundreds of thousands of clay tablets of various kinds over three thousand years.

SUMMARY:Meeting:Student Combinatorics: Scattering Correspondence and Schubert Calculus
DESCRIPTION:Motivated by physics\, we define the scattering equations and count the number of solutions separated by irreducible components of the scattering correspondence. We then define a subvariety V(k\,n) of the Grassmannian Gr(k\,n) and show that the coefficient in front of a special Schubert class in the fundamental class of V(k\,n) counts the solutions to scattering correspondence component by component. Finally\, we study V(3\,n)\, giving its fundamental class and its ideal in Plücker coordinates.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Foundations of Community Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Foundations of Community Engagement is an interactive workshop that introduces principles and practices of equitable\, ethical community engagement. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of what the term “community engagement” means\, as well as the many forms it might take - from research and course-based projects to philanthropy\, activism\, policy\, and direct service. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GLNT: Zero cycles on a product of elliptic curves
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: I will discuss some numerical evidence for part of the Bloch-Beilinson conjecture for zero cycles on a product of elliptic curves over a number field\, namely the injectivity of the Abel-Jacobi map modulo torsion. These examples were computed around ten years ago (in joint work with V. Srinivas) but never published. To a large extent\, this work has been superseded by recent work of Valia Gazaki and Jonathan Love\, nevertheless the original examples and methods (which are somewhat different) may be of some interest.
