For over 60 years, the region has been host to the activities of multinational oil corporations who partner with the Nigerian state in exploiting oil for profit. Oil was first discovered in the region in 1956, and the first shipment of the commodity to the international market occurred in 1958 with a consignment of about 5,000 barrels per day (bpd). Production peaked at about 2.5 million bpd, but today, because of community protests, insurgency, and general disruption to the activities of corporations, the number hovers between 1.2 million to 1.4 million bpd. While the state has benefited immensely from oil production, the same cannot be said of the communities that are hosts to pipelines, flow stations, and all of the oil infrastructure that has come to define the entire region. Loss of livelihood, heavily polluted environment, death, and displacement have characterized the region\u2019s interaction with multinational oil corporations such as Shell, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Eni, Total Energies, etc.\r\n\r\nThis exhibition is a bold attempt to shed light on what it means to live in an oil extractive enclave like the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The images showcase the lives lived, the loss, perseverance, and determination to survive.\r\n\r\nThe exhibition is divided into two parts. The first part of the exhibition is displayed in the DAAS gallery with the sub-theme \u201cPeople Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution\u201d and is a demonstration of the everyday lived experiences of the inhabitants of many of the enclaves of the Niger Delta. As depicted in the photos, people cross polluted rivers to go to school and in search of a means of survival.\r\n\r\nGallery visitors are invited to cross from the DAAS Gallery to the International Institute Gallery on the 5th floor of Weiser Hall to see the second part of the exhibition, \u201cLiving, Community, and Polluted Environment.\u201d This portion of the exhibition demonstrates community resilience in the face of environmental persecution. It shows everyday life amid oil infrastructure that litters the entire landscape of many of the communities in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.\r\n\r\n\u2014 - - -\r\nNnimmo Bassey is an architect, environmental justice activist, writer, and poet. His latest poetry collection is titled I See the Invisible (2023). Other collections include I Will Not Dance to Your Beat(2011) and We Thought It Was Oil But It Was Blood (2002). He is director of the ecological think-tank, Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).\r\n\r\nOmolade Adunbi is a professor of Anthropology, Afroamerican and African Studies and Law at the University of Michigan. His research examines the dynamics of power, natural resource extractive practices, governance, human and environmental rights, culture, transnational institutions, multinational corporations, and the postcolonial state. Cohen, Center for the Study of Global Change, Indiana University", "event_type":"Lecture \/ Discussion", "event_type_id":"13", "description":"Over the past ten years, global refugee education policy has shifted towards a model of inclusion such that refugees are integrated into national systems. Following the influx of Syrian refugees in 2011, the Government of Jordan adapted this inclusive model of education whereby refugees attend Jordanian schools, study the Jordanian curriculum from Jordanian teachers, often alongside Jordanian students. While this model of integration is upheld for its promise of providing high quality education to all students, the experiences of refugee students tell a different story. In this presentation, I will explore the experiences of refugee students from varying national backgrounds, with a focus on their sense of belonging at the local and national level. I will highlight the ways that refugee youth navigate and negotiate their belonging and point to the uneven outcomes of the inclusive refugee education policy.\r\n \r\n Dr Cohen\u2019s research centers on understanding the educational experiences of students and teachers in areas of crisis and conflict, with a focus on refugees and forced migrants in the Middle East. She is particularly interested in understanding the ways that policies are adapted, negotiated and implemented by educators and how that, in turn, impacts students\u2019 learning. Cohen has conducted research and applied work with students and educators in Jordan, Morocco, the United States, India and Myanmar. minoritized ingroup believes they are discriminated similarly to another outgroup based on their alleged foreignness or inferiority. Heightened solidarity is then supposed to boost support for policies that benefit minoritized outgroups who are not one\u2019s own\u2014for\r\nexample, Black adults become more pro-Latino, Asian adults become more pro-Black, and Latino adults become more pro-Asian. In this talk, Efr\u00e9n P\u00e9rez will discuss his lab\u2019s growing experimental evidence on this proposed mechanism. He will highlight new challenges\r\nand opportunities to learn more\u2014both theoretically and methodologically\u2014about interminority solidarity in politics.
