For over 60 years\, the region has been host to the activities of multinational oil corporations who partner with the Nigerian state in exploiting oil for profit. Oil was first discovered in the region in 1956\, and the first shipment of the commodity to the international market occurred in 1958 with a consignment of about 5\,000 barrels per day (bpd). Production peaked at about 2.5 million bpd\, but today\, because of community protests\, insurgency\, and general disruption to the activities of corporations\, the number hovers between 1.2 million to 1.4 million bpd. While the state has benefited immensely from oil production\, the same cannot be said of the communities that are hosts to pipelines\, flow stations\, and all of the oil infrastructure that has come to define the entire region. Loss of livelihood\, heavily polluted environment\, death\, and displacement have characterized the region’s interaction with multinational oil corporations such as Shell\, Chevron\, ExxonMobil\, Eni\, Total Energies\, etc.\n\nThis exhibition is a bold attempt to shed light on what it means to live in an oil extractive enclave like the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The images showcase the lives lived\, the loss\, perseverance\, and determination to survive.\n\nThe exhibition is divided into two parts. The first part of the exhibition is displayed in the DAAS gallery with the sub-theme “People Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution” and is a demonstration of the everyday lived experiences of the inhabitants of many of the enclaves of the Niger Delta. As depicted in the photos\, people cross polluted rivers to go to school and in search of a means of survival.\n\nGallery visitors are invited to cross from the DAAS Gallery to the International Institute Gallery on the 5th floor of Weiser Hall to see the second part of the exhibition\, “Living\, Community\, and Polluted Environment.” This portion of the exhibition demonstrates community resilience in the face of environmental persecution. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet* is the second iteration of the project\, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works. As part of the installation\, visitors can peer into a closet built in the center of the gallery designed by the artist. Predators are effectively fooled into avoiding perfectly edible prey\, because these “mimics” evolve phenotypes that make them appear similar to toxic inedible species. These small-scale ecological interactions are drivers of phenotypic evolution\, thus creating large-scale phenotypic patterns that manifest across phylogenies. My dissertation will investigate aspects of this complexity within coral snake mimicry\, an assortment of venomous and nonvenomous snakes brightly colored in their shared signal – bands of red and black. I will discuss my first chapter\, which leverages phenotypic variation to test hypotheses from mimicry theory at a macro scale\, and some of another chapter\, a theoretical model of snake mimicry. Originating in Taiwan in 1994\, this movement has mobilized hundreds of thousands of youths to read Confucian classics aloud without regard for understanding\, with the hope that repetitive recitation will eventually lead to eternal wisdom (dao). In its most intensive forms\, seen in Mainland China\, students read for eight hours a day for years and are often urged by parents (usually mothers) to drop out of legally mandatory mainstream schooling.\n \n Although the revival of Confucianism may easily be reduced to cultural engineering by party regimes (both PRC and ROC)\, Dr. Zeng argues that dujing prefigures the radical moral politics embedded in grassroots Confucianism and similar radical conservative movements in China. The ethnographic focus of this talk is a “Cultural Revolution”-like campaign within the movement. He analyzes the productive tensions of dujing in three facets: autonomist Confucianism\, moral schismogenesis\, and the alienation of wisdom/authority. This talk informs reflections on political culture in China\, moral anthropology\, and studies of grassroots social movements.\n \n As an anthropologist\, Dr. Zeng’s knowledge production focuses on ethnographically understanding the situational dynamics and dilemmas of family\, education\, religion\, and social movement in contemporary mainland China and Taiwan. His dissertation\, “Canonical Reading\, Alternative Education\, and the Movement of Eternal Wisdom in Contemporary Chinese Societies”\, interrogates the contemporary grassroots Confucianism in contemporary Chinese societies by probing the intersection of language\, knowledge\, gender\, and social movement. Computers are often described as “deterministic”: every process that is performed by a computer is pre-determined\, with often formulaic outcomes. “Determinism” is also a historically loaded word—one that has been paired with the term “biological” to justify eugenicist thought related to race\, disability\, and queer and transgender life. What might it mean\, then\, to place these meanings side-by-side\, connecting the long history of ideological determinism in relationship to race\, gender\, and sexuality in the United States alongside the use of determinism in computer science and programming?\n \nUsing previously unseen video from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s archives along with the 1978 glitch art piece *Digital TV Dinner*\, I examine the randomized imagery and glitch art produced by the Bally Astrocade\, a video game console and home computer whose software was developed in 1978 by trans programmer and game designer Jamie Faye Fenton. I trace this history of the random through computers\, hardware random number generators like lava lamps and atmospheric noise from radio waves\, the United States census\, and the roots of random number generation in eugenicist thought in the United States.\n\nWhit Pow (they/them) is an assistant professor of Media\, Culture\, and Communication at New York University. She received a BA in English and Spanish with an emphasis on Latin American Culture from the University of Michigan. First we celebrate the 200th anniversary of one of the first original overtures written for winds. Then the music of contemporary American composer James Stephenson takes over\, including the commission of a new setting of his \"Spinning Wheel\" for trumpet and wind ensemble featuring SMTD Professor Robert Sullivan as trumpet soloist.
