Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. For over 60 years\, the region has been host to the activities of multinational oil corporations who partner with the Nigerian state in exploiting oil for profit. Oil was first discovered in the region in 1956\, and the first shipment of the commodity to the international market occurred in 1958 with a consignment of about 5\,000 barrels per day (bpd). Production peaked at about 2.5 million bpd\, but today\, because of community protests\, insurgency\, and general disruption to the activities of corporations\, the number hovers between 1.2 million to 1.4 million bpd. While the state has benefited immensely from oil production\, the same cannot be said of the communities that are hosts to pipelines\, flow stations\, and all of the oil infrastructure that has come to define the entire region. Loss of livelihood\, heavily polluted environment\, death\, and displacement have characterized the region’s interaction with multinational oil corporations such as Shell\, Chevron\, ExxonMobil\, Eni\, Total Energies\, etc.\n\nThis exhibition is a bold attempt to shed light on what it means to live in an oil extractive enclave like the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The images showcase the lives lived\, the loss\, perseverance\, and determination to survive.\n\nThe exhibition is divided into two parts. The first part of the exhibition is displayed in the DAAS gallery with the sub-theme “People Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution” and is a demonstration of the everyday lived experiences of the inhabitants of many of the enclaves of the Niger Delta. As depicted in the photos\, people cross polluted rivers to go to school and in search of a means of survival.\n\nGallery visitors are invited to cross from the DAAS Gallery to the International Institute Gallery on the 5th floor of Weiser Hall to see the second part of the exhibition\, “Living\, Community\, and Polluted Environment.” This portion of the exhibition demonstrates community resilience in the face of environmental persecution. It shows everyday life amid oil infrastructure that litters the entire landscape of many of the communities in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.\n\n— - - -\nNnimmo Bassey is an architect\, environmental justice activist\, writer\, and poet. His latest poetry collection is titled I See the Invisible (2023). Other collections include I Will Not Dance to Your Beat(2011) and We Thought It Was Oil But It Was Blood (2002). He is director of the ecological think-tank\, Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).\n\nOmolade Adunbi is a professor of Anthropology\, Afroamerican and African Studies and Law at the University of Michigan. His research examines the dynamics of power\, natural resource extractive practices\, governance\, human and environmental rights\, culture\, transnational institutions\, multinational corporations\, and the postcolonial state. DESCRIPTION:In the multi-media installation *The Butch Closet*\, artist Phranc illustrates her life stories as a queer artist\, Jewish lesbian folk singer\, and \"cardboard cobbler.\" By meticulously re-creating personal objects and pieces of clothing out of paper\, cardboard\, thread\, and paint\, she revisits her own history\, contextualizing her experiences as an iconic performer\, and maker\, constructing\, reconstructing\, and re-imagining her image against a larger historical context of second-wave feminism and queer activism. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet* is the second iteration of the project\, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works. As part of the installation\, visitors can peer into a closet built in the center of the gallery designed by the artist. Conceptually\, the space shifts from inside to outside\, public and private\, and explores themes of visibility and that which remains inaccessible or unseen.\n\nAbout the artist:\nPhranc is a jewish lesbian folksinger and queer artist who uses song\, painting and sculpture to champion personal identities and illustrate the struggle\, survival\, and victory of the queer individual. An internationally acclaimed and award winning performer. Phranc’s work integrates humor and a butch lesbian aesthetic. Her current project\, Phranc Talk: The Butch Closet\, is a multi-media memoir that spans her 40-year career. Phranc lives and works in Santa Monica\, California and Vancouver\, British Columbia.\n\n*Phranc is the 2024 Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.*

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Kelly Church & Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: September 13 – December 7\, 2024Opening Reception: September 19\, 2024\n\nKelly Church &amp\; Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue is a major exhibition that centers the subjectivities of two contemporary Indigenous artists whose practices have sustained and bolstered the relevance of the age-old Anishinaabe practice of black ash basket-making in the 21st century. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter\, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors)\, young folx\, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories\, as well as those of survivance and resilience\, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps\, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA\, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing\, thinking\, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus\, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women’s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers\, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on\, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole\, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works\, including 15-17 new works. Together\, the exhibition offers an incisive critique of the colonial\, racist paradigm of systemic erasure and assimilation that continues to this day\, with the ongoing crises of missing and murdered Indigenous women\, culture wars\, and climate change that threaten Indigenous ways of living\, sustenance\, and making. \nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra with Curatorial Assistant Zoi Crampton.\nStamps Gallery is grateful to Michigan Humanities and U-M Arts Initiative for generously supporting the exhibition and programs.

DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CREES Noon Lecture. Permanent Reinventing of Itself: Belarusian Culture Confronting Cyclical Erasure
DESCRIPTION:Five years ago\, Belarus experienced a renaissance in publishing\, with dozens of private publishers\, an independent system of book Circulation\, and standing-room only book events. The country also hosted art exhibitions with international curators and saw Western artists collaborate in the re-invention of urban spaces. But Belarusian culture is now perhaps the least visible from the region. What happened?\n   \nThe fallout from the controversial 2020 presidential election and subsequent national protests severely damaged the country’s cultural space. Publishing houses were closed\, private galleries were abandoned\, and plays in national theaters are now produced solely in Russian language after leading Belarusian actors were fired for participating in protests and replaced with actors from provincial theaters of neighboring countries.\n   \nBut this is not the first instance of cultural destruction in Belarus. Some examples include: the banning of Marc Chagall\, the night of the executed poets in 1937\, the czar’s repressions after Kalinouski’s 1863 revolution\, the prosecutions of Uniates in the 17th century\, and the burning of Francysk Skaryna’s books in Moscow in the 16th century\, to name a few.\n   \n   In this lecture\, Belarusian writer Victor Martinovich will speak to his own exploration of cultural identity and his country’s challenge to constantly reinvent itself.\n   \n   Victor Martinovich is a Belarusian writer\, playwright\, art historian\, and public intellectual. He is the author of six fiction novels and seven plays\, most notably the novels \"Paranoia\,\" \"Night\,\" and \"Revolution.\" His work combines elements of social fiction\, with parabolic and realistic depictions of post-Soviet societies. Plays based on his works have been staged in Hamburg\, Munich\, Vienna\, Minsk\, Innsbruck\, and St. Petersburg.\n   \n   Martinovich is an associate professor at the European Humanities University in Vilnius\, Lithuania\, where he teaches courses in the arts and humanities. His PhD dissertation focused on Belarusian-born painters of the School of Paris and Vitebsk avant-garde. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag Seminar | Superadditivity and the performance of quantum tasks in large N field theories and holography
DESCRIPTION:Holographic conformal field theories exhibit dramatic changes in the structure of their operator algebras in the limit where the number of local degrees of freedom (N) becomes infinite. An important example of such phenomena is the violation of the additivity property for algebras associated to local subregions. I will first review several examples of superadditive algebras in quantum field theory and then investigate their consequences in the context of holographic duality. As an important application\, I will demonstrate how superadditivity of local algebras is intimately related to the ability of holographic field theories to perform quantum tasks that would naievely be impossible. Finally\, I will argue that the connected wedge theorems (CWTs) of May\, Penington\, Sorce\, and Yoshida\, which characterize holographic protocols for quantum tasks\, can be re-phrased in terms of superadditive algebras. This re-phrasing allows for a potential generalization of the CWTs into an equivalence statement.

DESCRIPTION:University Carillonist Tiffany Ng & Kathy Beck perform on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Earplugs are available from the carillonist upon request. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nMagnetic reconnection is the reconfiguration of the topology of the magnetic field in a plasma. It is associated with the efficient conversion of magnetic energy\, resulting in\, for example\, solar flares\, and the generation of supra-thermal particle populations. Reconnection is present throughout the magnetized universe: from lab plasmas and the Earth’s magnetosphere to magnetar flares and gamma-ray bursts. It is thought to be a key ingredient of plasma turbulence\, determining much of the energy dissipation.\n     The importance of reconnection across multiple areas has meant that it has been the subject of investigation over the last 70 years. Broadly speaking\, the main questions are: what triggers reconnection (onset problem)\; how fast it can proceed (rate problem)\; and how is the magnetic energy divided amongst the different possible channels (energy partition problem). While much progress has been made\, investigations are hampered by the fundamental nonlinear character of the problem and its intrinsic multi-scale nature: conspiring to make analytical and numerical calculations extremely challenging\, and prompt researchers to seek to simplify the problem as much as possible.\n     This talk reflects on these challenges\, how they have constrained the research that has been done to date\, and possible theoretical frameworks to move the field forward.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nNuno F. Loureiro is Director of MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center\, Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering and the Herman Feshbach (1942) Professor of Physics at MIT. He majored in Physics at Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon (Portugal) in 2000 and obtained a Ph.D. in Physics at Imperial College London (UK) in 2005. He did post-doctoral work at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory between 2005-07\, and at the UKAEA Culham Centre for Fusion Energy between 2007-09. Prior to joining MIT in 2016 Loureiro was a researcher at the Institute for Plasmas and Nuclear Fusion at IST Lisbon. He is the recipient of the American Physical Society (APS) Thomas H. Stix Award for Outstanding Early Career Contributions to Plasma Physics Research in 2015\, and of an NSF CAREER Award in 2017. Loureiro was elected APS Fellow in 2022.\nLoureiro has an active interest in several fundamental aspects of magnetized plasma dynamics\, such as magnetic reconnection\, magnetic field generation and amplification\, confinement and transport in fusion plasmas\, and turbulence in strongly magnetized\, weakly collisional plasmas.\n\nThe seminar will be conducted both in person and on Zoom. DESCRIPTION:For a family of abelian varieties\, the rational cohomology/relative Chow motive has a canonical decomposition into pure weight spaces by Beauville and Deninger-Murre. A degenerate abelian fibration is a fibration which is an abelian fibration generically but admits singular fibers on the boundary. It is a natural question to ask whether some of the structure remains to hold for degenerate abelian fibrations.  In this talk\, we consider perverse filtration on the rational cohomology of the relative compactified Jacobian and ask when the filtration has Fourier-stable multiplicative splitting. I will explain that if the relative compactified Jacobian arises from the Beauville-Mukai system\, we get such multiplicative splitting. On the other hand\, for the general family of integral curves\, even for the family of nodal curves\, we show that such multiplicative splitting cannot exist. This is a joint work with D. Maulik\, J. Shen and Q. Yin.

DESCRIPTION:From the early thirteenth century traders from Italian mercantile families started travelling eastward\, to the European frontiers\, to areas such as Crimea in the northern Black Sea region\, where commercial outposts served as markets for trading goods with Eurasia and beyond. The lecture centers on the experience of those traders\, focusing on metalwork and the way it shaped discourse regarding art\, heritage\, and the indigenous\, both in the European frontiers and “back home” in Italy’s Early Modern domestic spaces.   \n\nIttai Weinryb is an associate professor at the Bard Graduate Center. He is currently completing a book on art and material culture circulating in the Black Sea region during the Middle Ages and Early Modern period and another monograph which centers on the sentiment of *Hope* as a category of artistic creativity. He is the co-editor of the book series *Art/Work* which is set to narrate a new history of art founded in the study of objects\, materials\, and technology. He is the author of *The Bronze Object in the Middle Ages* (2016) and of *Die Hildesheimer Avantgarde: Kunst und Kolonialismus im mittelalterlichen Deutschland* (2023)\, and the curator of the exhibition *Agents of Faith: Votive Objects in Time and Place* (2018).

DESCRIPTION:We will give a gentle introduction to the world of big mapping class groups. These arise as groups of topological symmetries of: Infinite-type surfaces (dimension 2)\, locally finite\, infinite graphs (dimension 1)\, and closed subsets of Cantor sets\, i.e. second countable Stone spaces (dimension 0). These groups are all uncountable and come equipped with a topology that makes them into non-locally compact (aka \"huge\") Polish groups. We will survey some of the rich and interesting interplay between the topological\, geometric\, and algebraic aspects of these groups. Our main motivation will be to propose these groups as a fertile testing ground for extending the tools of geometric group theory beyond finitely (or compactly) generated groups to general \"huge\" groups\; however\, we will also mention potential connections to other fields of geometry\, topology\, and dynamics.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:\"Voices of the Rainforest\"
DESCRIPTION:\"Voices of the Rainforest: A Day in the Life of Bosavi\" is a 70-minute cinema concert–an experiential documentary about the ecological and aesthetic coevolution of Papua New Guinea's Bosavi rainforest region and its inhabitants. Through sound and image\, the film immerses viewers in the rainforest\, and makes audible myriad connections between the everyday sounds of the rainforest biosphere and the creative practices of singing to\, with\, and about it by the Bosavi people. Structured around a day in the life of the rainforest and the music it inspires for the Bosavi people\, the film brings to life the everyday activities of work\, leisure\, and ritual–heard in the full ambient setting of the rainforest–throughout the day and night.\n\n\"Voices of the Rainforest\" was produced by Steven Feld and Dennis Leonard and directed by Steven Feld and Jeremiah Ra Richards in collaboration with the Bona community of Bosavi\, Papua New Guinea. Feld conducted anthropological and ethnomusicological fieldwork in Bosavi from 1975 to 2000. The original \"Voices of the Rainforest\" CD was produced during this time (1991) with production support from Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart. Working with acclaimed sound editor Dennis Leonard at Skywalker Sound in 2016-2017\, Feld recomposed a 25th anniversary 7.1 Voices soundtrack. A 2018 return to Bosavi with filmmaker Jeremiah Ra Richards and digitization of Feld's extensive archival photographs led to the creation of the immersive film joined to the 7.1 soundtrack (Documentary Educational Resources).\n\nSteven Feld is an anthropologist\, filmmaker\, musician\, and sound artist\, and Distinguished Professor of Anthropology Emeritus at the University of New Mexico. Recipient of a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 1991\, he was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1994. In 2003\, he received a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship and was elected a fellow of the British Academy in 2024. His research has also been supported by the National Science Foundation\, the National Endowments for the Humanities and for the Arts\, the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research\, and other foundations.
