SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Let the Earth Breathe. Photo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored and presented by the Wallenberg Medal and Lecture\, the African Studies Center\, and the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies.\n----\nLet the Earth Breathe: Photo Exhibition\nby Nnimmo Bassey\, 2024 Wallenberg Medalist\, Architect\, Poet\, and African Environmental Activist\; and Omolade Adunbi\, African Studies Center Director\n\nPhoto Exhibition: People Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution -\nOpening Reception: 3:30 PM (Light refreshments served)\nGalleryDAAS\, Haven Hall\, Ground Floor\, Room G648\, 505 S State St.\nExhibition Dates: September 9 - October 11\n\nPhoto Exhibition: Living\, Community\, and Polluted Environment\nInternational Institute Gallery\, Weiser Hall\, 5th Floor\, Room 547\, 500 Church St.\nExhibition Dates: September 9 - 27\n\n- - -\nAbout the Photo Exhibition:\n\nThe Niger Delta region of Nigeria has been described as one of the most polluted spaces in the entire world. For over 60 years\, the region has been host to the activities of multinational oil corporations who partner with the Nigerian state in exploiting oil for profit. Oil was first discovered in the region in 1956\, and the first shipment of the commodity to the international market occurred in 1958 with a consignment of about 5\,000 barrels per day (bpd). Production peaked at about 2.5 million bpd\, but today\, because of community protests\, insurgency\, and general disruption to the activities of corporations\, the number hovers between 1.2 million to 1.4 million bpd. While the state has benefited immensely from oil production\, the same cannot be said of the communities that are hosts to pipelines\, flow stations\, and all of the oil infrastructure that has come to define the entire region. Loss of livelihood\, heavily polluted environment\, death\, and displacement have characterized the region’s interaction with multinational oil corporations such as Shell\, Chevron\, ExxonMobil\, Eni\, Total Energies\, etc.\n\nThis exhibition is a bold attempt to shed light on what it means to live in an oil extractive enclave like the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The images showcase the lives lived\, the loss\, perseverance\, and determination to survive.\n\nThe exhibition is divided into two parts. The first part of the exhibition is displayed in the DAAS gallery with the sub-theme “People Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution” and is a demonstration of the everyday lived experiences of the inhabitants of many of the enclaves of the Niger Delta. As depicted in the photos\, people cross polluted rivers to go to school and in search of a means of survival.\n\nGallery visitors are invited to cross from the DAAS Gallery to the International Institute Gallery on the 5th floor of Weiser Hall to see the second part of the exhibition\, “Living\, Community\, and Polluted Environment.” This portion of the exhibition demonstrates community resilience in the face of environmental persecution. It shows everyday life amid oil infrastructure that litters the entire landscape of many of the communities in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.\n\n— - - -\nNnimmo Bassey is an architect\, environmental justice activist\, writer\, and poet. His latest poetry collection is titled I See the Invisible (2023). Other collections include I Will Not Dance to Your Beat(2011) and We Thought It Was Oil But It Was Blood (2002). He is director of the ecological think-tank\, Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).\n\nOmolade Adunbi is a professor of Anthropology\, Afroamerican and African Studies and Law at the University of Michigan. His research examines the dynamics of power\, natural resource extractive practices\, governance\, human and environmental rights\, culture\, transnational institutions\, multinational corporations\, and the postcolonial state. His latest book\, Enclaves of Exception: Special Economic Zones and Extractive Practices in Nigeria (Indiana University Press\,2022)\, offers a new approach to exploring the relationship between oil and technologies of extraction and their interrelatedness to China’s interest in free trade zones and its impact on local livelihoods and environmental practices.\n\n*Nnimmo Bassey’s photos courtesy of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).*

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Butch Closet
DESCRIPTION:In the multi-media installation *The Butch Closet*\, artist Phranc illustrates her life stories as a queer artist\, Jewish lesbian folk singer\, and \"cardboard cobbler.\" By meticulously re-creating personal objects and pieces of clothing out of paper\, cardboard\, thread\, and paint\, she revisits her own history\, contextualizing her experiences as an iconic performer\, and maker\, constructing\, reconstructing\, and re-imagining her image against a larger historical context of second-wave feminism and queer activism. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet* is the second iteration of the project\, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works. As part of the installation\, visitors can peer into a closet built in the center of the gallery designed by the artist. Conceptually\, the space shifts from inside to outside\, public and private\, and explores themes of visibility and that which remains inaccessible or unseen.\n\nAbout the artist:\nPhranc is a jewish lesbian folksinger and queer artist who uses song\, painting and sculpture to champion personal identities and illustrate the struggle\, survival\, and victory of the queer individual. An internationally acclaimed and award winning performer. Phranc’s work integrates humor and a butch lesbian aesthetic. Her current project\, Phranc Talk: The Butch Closet\, is a multi-media memoir that spans her 40-year career. Phranc lives and works in Santa Monica\, California and Vancouver\, British Columbia.\n\n*Phranc is the 2024 Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.*

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Kelly Church & Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: September 13 – December 7\, 2024Opening Reception: September 19\, 2024\n\nKelly Church &amp\; Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue is a major exhibition that centers the subjectivities of two contemporary Indigenous artists whose practices have sustained and bolstered the relevance of the age-old Anishinaabe practice of black ash basket-making in the 21st century. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter\, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors)\, young folx\, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories\, as well as those of survivance and resilience\, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps\, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA\, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing\, thinking\, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus\, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women’s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers\, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on\, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole\, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works\, including 15-17 new works. Together\, the exhibition offers an incisive critique of the colonial\, racist paradigm of systemic erasure and assimilation that continues to this day\, with the ongoing crises of missing and murdered Indigenous women\, culture wars\, and climate change that threaten Indigenous ways of living\, sustenance\, and making. \nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra with Curatorial Assistant Zoi Crampton.\nStamps Gallery is grateful to Michigan Humanities and U-M Arts Initiative for generously supporting the exhibition and programs.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Quantum Research Institute Seminar | New platforms for quantum sensing and quantum computing
DESCRIPTION:Abstract.\nThe nitrogen vacancy (NV) center in diamond exhibits spin-dependent fluorescence and long spin coherence times under ambient conditions\, enabling applications in quantum information processing and sensing. NV centers near the surface can have strong interactions with external materials and spins\, enabling new forms of nanoscale spectroscopy. However\, NV spin coherence degrades within 100 nanometers of the surface\, suggesting that diamond surfaces are plagued with ubiquitous defects. I will describe our recent efforts to correlate direct materials characterization with single spin measurements to devise methods to stabilize highly coherent NV centers within nanometers of the surface. We deploy these coherent shallow NV centers for a new nanoscale sensing technique\, whereby we use covariance measurements of two or more NV centers to measure two-point magnetic field correlators. \nOur approach for correlating surface spectroscopy techniques with single qubit measurements to realize directed improvements is generally applicable to many systems. Separately\, I will describe our recent efforts to tackle noise and microwave losses in superconducting qubits. Building large\, useful quantum systems based on transmon qubits will require significant improvements in qubit relaxation and coherence times\, which are orders of magnitude shorter than limits imposed by bulk properties of the constituent materials. This indicates that loss likely originates from uncontrolled surfaces\, interfaces\, and contaminants. Previous efforts to improve qubit lifetimes have focused primarily on designs that minimize contributions from surfaces. However\, significant improvements in the lifetime of planar transmon qubits have remained elusive for several years. We have recently fabricated planar transmon qubits that have both lifetimes and coherence times exceeding 0.3 milliseconds by using tantalum as the material in the capacitor. Following this discovery\, we have parametrized the remaining sources of loss in state-of-the-art devices using systematic measurements of the dependence of loss on temperature\, power\, and geometry. This parametrization\, complemented by direct materials characterization\, allows for rational\, directed improvement of superconducting qubits.\n\nBio.\nNathalie de Leon is an associate professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Princeton\, where she focuses on quantum sensing with NV centers in diamond\, quantum networks with solid state defect systems and nanophotonics\, and new material platforms for superconducting qubits. She received her BS from Stanford University in 2004 and PhD from Harvard University in 2011. She then worked as a CIQM and Element Six postdoctoral fellow at Harvard. Nathalie joined the faculty of Princeton University as an assistant professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2016\, where she was later promoted to associate professor. Her group works at the interface of quantum optics\, atomic physics\, condensed matter and device physics\, materials science\, surface spectroscopy\, nanofabrication\, and spin physics to uncover sources of noise and loss in quantum systems\, and uses these insights to design new quantum platforms. She is currently the materials thrust leader of the Co-design Center for Quantum Advantage\, a DOE National Quantum Information Science Center\, and she was elected as Vice Chair of the APS Division of Quantum Information in 2024. Nathalie received the Air Force Office for Scientific Research Young Investigator Award in 2016\, the Sloan Research Fellowship in Physics in 2017\, the NSF CAREER Award in 2018\, the DARPA Young Faculty Award in 2018\, and the DOE Early Career Award in 2018\, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation Experimental Physics Investigator Award in 2023\, and the APS Rolf Landauer and Charles H. Bennett Award in Quantum Computing in 2023.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Adolescent Contraception and Abortion Post-Dobbs
DESCRIPTION:The Supreme Court’s 2022 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson\, which removed federal constitutional protection for abortion rights\, has disproportionately impacted a number of historically marginalized groups\, including young people. Integrating evidence from the fields of developmental psychology\, population health science\, public policy\, and family planning\, this presentation will review the disproportionate barriers young people faced to accessing contraception and abortion prior to Dobbs\, how the landscape has shifted since Dobbs\, and what we know about the impact of policy changes on adolescents’ health and well-being. I will highlight the relative lack of research on adolescents’ family planning and identify data needs and opportunities to generate evidence on this topic.\n\nJulie Maslowsky is a developmental psychologist and population health scientist who studies adolescent health\, with a focus on sexual and reproductive health including contraception and abortion. She is Associate Professor of Health Behavior and Biological Sciences in the Schools of Nursing\, Associate Professor of Health Behavior and Health Education in the School of Public Health\, and an affiliate of the Population Studies Center at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. Dr. Maslowsky’s research integrates adolescent developmental science with population and reproductive health to inform developmentally appropriate policies and practices on adolescent sexual and reproductive health. Her work has been funded by NICHD\, NIMH\, NIDA\, NIMHD\, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, and the William T. Grant Foundation.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Environmental chemicals and midlife women's health: an environmental reproductive justice lens
DESCRIPTION:Tamarra James-Todd\, PhD\, is the Mark and Catherine Winkler Associate Professor of Environmental Reproductive Epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.\n\nAs an environmental epidemiologist\, Dr. James-Todd's research takes a three-way approach to studying and improving women's reproductive and long-term health by:\n1) evaluating the role of environmental chemicals on adverse maternal health outcomes\; \n2) assessing racial/ethnic disparities in environmental chemical exposures and adverse health outcomes\; and \n3) developing pregnancy and postpartum interventions to improve women's chronic disease risk.\n\nA related area of research focuses on racial/ethnic differences in environmental chemical exposures and their contribution to disparities in chronic disease risk.\n\nABOUT THE LECTURE\nThis special lecture honors Dr. Sower’s extraordinary scientific contributions to the field of women’s health and to inspire young scholars to transcend the boundaries between varying fields of research to advance women’s health. Dr. Sower’s unique insights into the breadth and depth of underlying physiological processes common to multiple diseases as well as her efforts to understand the linkages between ovarian and chronological aging has contributed substantially to the advancement of science. As a result of her contributions\, women’s health grew from a peripheral field of study to a major discipline and we honor her legacy by inviting a groundbreaking researcher to present a lecture in her name.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:AI for Advanced Manufacturing – A Peek into Future
DESCRIPTION:Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing industries worldwide\, and its widespread implementation in manufacturing will secure a significant competitive edge for the United States. Because advanced manufacturing operations depend on experience and know-how\, the potential to use AI to enhance production discovery and apply implicit knowledge is high. Dr. Bian will address the current state of advanced manufacturing and AI\, identify the main obstacles to AI integration in manufacturing\, and underscore the necessity of AI in manufacturing endeavors. By taking additive manufacturing as a case study\, Dr. Bian will discuss the previous work on the application of AI in advanced manufacturing\, such as understanding the parameter-process-structure relationship\, monitoring processes in real-time\, and characterizing parts. This talk will also discuss the complex questions that arise when incorporating AI into manufacturing research and education\, as well as opportunities for industrial engineers.\n\nDr. Linkan Bian is a program director in the Advanced Manufacturing (AM) cluster of the Civil\, Mechanical\, and Manufacturing Innovation division of the National Science Foundation (NSF). At his home institute\, Mississippi State University\, Dr. Bian is the Thomas B. & Terri L. Nusz Endowed Professor in the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department. Dr. Bian received his Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology and B.S. in Applied Mathematics from Beijing University. The major themes of Dr. Bian’s research focus on understanding the process-structure-property relationships of additive manufacturing\, as well as the investigation of how AI/ML can transform the modeling and experimental approaches. Dr. Bian was the president of IISE Quality Control and Reliability Engineering division and is currently serving on the editorial board of multiple ASME and IISE journals.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar Series - Why Did Darwin Change His Mind About Sex Ratio?
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our ongoing Thursday Seminar Series.\n\nAbout the seminar: Drawing on Chapter 3 of my book Did Darwin write the Origin Backwards? I analyze the model of sex ratio evolution that Darwin presents in the 1st edition of Descent of Man. I’ll then describe Darwin’s mysterious retraction of that model in the 2nd edition. Darwin’s 1st edition argument traces back to John Arbuthnot’s 1710 article “An argument for divine providence\, taken from the constant regularity observed in the births of both sexes.” There is no evidence that Darwin read Arbuthnot’s article\, but Darwin probably read about Arbuthnot’s argument in William Paley’s The Principles of Moral and Political Philosophy. As for the retraction\, I’ll argue that Darwin used a style of phylogenetic reasoning in the Origin that would have allowed him to see the error in his earlier argument. There’s a second possible explanation that I’ll also describe.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThis talk will focus on our recent progress in utilizing dual-modality optical and ultrasound imaging techniques to advance the diagnosis and treatment assessment of breast\, ovarian\, and colorectal cancer. Ultrasound imaging has co-registered with optical imaging techniques to provide lesion morphology while optical imaging maps out lesion functional activity. The co-registered optical and ultrasound imaging techniques have been implemented on hand-held probes with different configurations suitable for imaging the breast\, ovary\, and rectum. Ultrasound lesion morphology information has been used for localizing lesions for optical imaging reconstruction and providing diagnostic output. Optical functional parameters and spatial distribution of total hemoglobin and oxygen saturation significantly improve the accuracy of ultrasound diagnosis and treatment response assessment. This talk will also discuss the promising roles of deep learning dual modality fusion models in cancer diagnosis and treatment prediction.\n\nBio:\nProfessor Quing Zhu is the Edwin H. Murty Professor of the Biomedical Engineering Department of Washington University in St. Louis. She also has a joint appointment in Radiology at Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis. Professor Quing Zhu has been named a Fellow of OSA\, a Fellow of SPIE\, and a Fellow of AIMBE. Her research interests are focused on imaging techniques and machine learning methods of photoacoustic tomography\, diffused light imaging\, ultrasound\, and optical coherence tomography for cancer detection\, diagnosis\, and treatment assessment and prediction. \n\nZoom:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/94337625486

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Department of Astronomy 2024-2025 Colloquium Series Presents:
DESCRIPTION:\"Uncovering the Ancient Milky Way\"\n\nThe Milky Way's ancient\, low-metallicity stars and its surrounding dwarf galaxies provide unique windows into early galaxy formation and initial episodes of element production. Recent advances in metallicity-sensitive imaging have significantly enhanced our ability to identify these stars\, with high potential for new insights on Population III nucleosynthesis\, early small-scale galaxy formation\, and the assembly history of galaxies. I will present three results highlighting this: (1) the discovery of extended low-metallicity stellar populations around several dwarf galaxies\, with a focus on the Tucana II ultra-faint dwarf galaxy\, suggesting the presence of extended halos in some of these relic systems\; (2) detailed chemical abundance analyses of stars in the outskirts of two of these systems\, shedding light on their formation mechanisms\; and (3) the detection and characterization of an [Fe/H] < -4.0 star in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC)—the most iron-poor star identified in an external galaxy-- plausibly providing insights on the signatures of extragalactic Population III supernovae as a unique comparison point to analogous signatures seen in the Milky Way. Finally\, I will introduce a new large-scale Dark Energy Camera survey\, which is employing a metallicity-sensitive narrow-band CaHK filter to image a quarter of the southern sky. This new survey will significantly push the boundaries of low-metallicity\, low surface brightness studies in the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds\, with potential to scale the aforementioned results to population-level insights across a significant swath of the southern sky.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: The Ethics of Blessed Entertainment: The Visual and Affective Fundraising Strategies of German Humanitarianism on Behalf of Ottoman Armenians (1890-1930)
DESCRIPTION:“Should it be so that we simply get no more money if we do not set the mental engines of both the religious and sensation in motion\, should it really be so? What an alarming\, fatal pair of crutches\, which is here so inseparable religion and sensation!\"\n\nIn two sentences\, Paul Schütz\, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Lepsius Deutsche Orient Mission in Berlin\, summarizes and questions the primary humanitarian fundraising strategies of German humanitarians on behalf of Ottoman Armenians starting in the 1890s\, namely the exploitation of the public’s religious sensibilities and a common taste for sensationalist stories and images. Examining the textual and visual fundraising material\, the talk highlights the link between religious obligations and popular tastes and habits\, illustrating how German humanitarians navigated state politics\, public opinion\, and the desires of a pietist counter-public to mobilize empathy and aid for Ottoman Armenians. The talk explores the intersection of media\, performance\, and humanitarianism by emphasizing the importance of visual and affective strategies in humanitarian work\, the ethical considerations involved\, and the historical evolution of these practices.\n\nMelanie Tanielian is an Associate Professor in the History Department at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. Her monograph The Charity of War: Famine\, Humanitarian Aid and World War I in the Middle East explores the political of provisioning in ameliorating wartime famine on the Ottoman home front. A historian of war and society\, Tanielian’s research interests include the social and cultural history of WWI in the Middle East and the history of modern humanitarianism. She is currently working on a new book\, Fantasies of Humanitarianism/Humanitarian Fantasies: Germany and the Eastern Mediterranean\, 1896-1933 under contract with Cambridge University Press.\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student DGT: Algebraic and Geometric Convergence of Discrete Kleinian Groups
DESCRIPTION:Hyperbolic 3-manifolds correspond to discrete subgroups of PSL(2\,C). However\, the limit of discrete subgroups may not remain discrete\, and we may lose this correspondence. This poses challenges when attempting to extend certain properties to the limiting object of a sequence of manifolds. This talk will explore the conditions under which the limit of discrete subgroups of PSL(2\,C) remains discrete\, under two types of convergence: algebraic convergence and geometric convergence. Additionally\, we will provide examples illustrating instances where the algebraic limit and geometric limit are distinct.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:MCSP Social Justice Film Series: There Went the Neighborhood
DESCRIPTION:As part of Ann Arbor 200\, the Ann Arbor District Library and 7 Cylinders Studio (7CS) have produced a documentary film about the closing of Ann Arbor's Jones School. In 1965\, the Board of Education closed the majority-Black school. Ann Arbor joined a nationwide trend of school desegregation during the Civil Rights Era. But for these young students\, the loss of a neighborhood school foreshadowed changes to their close-knit community. Gentrification came to Ann Arbor on the heels of desegregation.\n\nIn the making of this film\, 7CS filmmakers and AADL archivists interviewed over thirty former Jones students and Black community leaders. They shared memories of Jones School and \"The Old Neighborhood\"—the areas now known as Kerrytown and Water Hill. A filmed walking tour\, studio interviews\, and historical photos form the core of the film.\n\nAfter the screening\, there will be a panel discussion and Q&A with director Donald Harrison\, participants Omer Jean Winborn and Roger Brown\, and producer Heidi Morse.

For almost a century\, Woolf’s eponymous hero(ine) has inspired readers with their gender fluidity as well as their physical and spiritual metamorphoses across a three-hundred-year span. In making his film\, Preciado invited a diverse group of more than twenty trans and nonbinary people to play the role of Orlando and to participate in this shared biography. Together\, they perform interpretations of the novel\, weaving into Woolf’s narrative their own stories of transition and identity formation. Not content to simply update a groundbreaking work\, Preciado interrogates the relevance of “Orlando” in the ongoing struggle to secure dignity for trans people worldwide.\n\nWatch the official trailer here: https://youtu.be/LpGFplNRUmc?si=4TXIapiyMX0YaI7u\n\nThis event will be in person. SUMMARY:Performance:7 Hours Difference Part II: Simple Present Tense
DESCRIPTION:‘Present Simple Tense’ is a full evening length devised dance theater work created by the renowned guest artist Tatyana Solokova in collaboration with the cast. The piece is the second part of the international collaboration project between Tatyana Sokolova at New Bulgarian University (NBU) in Sofia and Tzveta Kassabova at University of Michigan\, Department of Theatre and Drama. The first piece premiered this May in Sofia and will be performed regularly at NBU throughout the next year. Both works bridge the gap between the genres of visual art\, music\, theater\, and movement. They explore similar themes and subject matters\, but viewed from two very different cultures that are more than an ocean apart. At the center of our project is the question ‘How much does one need to be happy?’ – how many things\, how much money\, how much work\, how much interaction\, how much loneliness\, how much care\, how much dreaming\, how much playing\, how much talking? But also\, when is it too much\, what happens when a line is crossed? A metaphor and a starting point for our exploration is logorrhea – a state of excessive and often incoherent talkativeness or wordiness. We extrapolate this notion into many physical\, behavioral and social aspects and interactions. We also explore human senses - how and why do we prioritize the use of our senses\, what happens when we try to explore each of them individually? What happens when we try to liming the predominant sense in various circumstances and how can that generate movement material and influence the overall structure of the work? Our overarching question is what is idiosyncratic\, what is cultural and what is universal?

SUMMARY:Performance:Fight Night | Ontroerend Goed
DESCRIPTION:Five candidates. One winner. You decide who survives. \n\nOn the brink of a presidential election that people on both sides have called the most consequential in history\, Belgium’s extraordinary Ontroerend Goed offers a fun and thought-provoking\, examination of free will and politics that puts electronic voting devices — and the candidates’ fates — directly into the hands of audience members.\n\nFirst created in 2013\, seemingly a lifetime ago in the political landscape\, this critically acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe Festival hit has been reimagined for the present day\, with each performance taking a different turn depending on those in the audience. This resolutely political show contains no identifiable political message\, ideology\, or social or economic reality\, but draws attention to the reasons and motivations that cause people to vote in a certain way and how the battle for our attention\, sympathy\, and approval reveal surprising and superficial snap judgments. If you are sick and tired of the constant bombardment of political antagonism in every facet of life\, this immersive and sharp analysis of democracy will force you to step back and consider why we care so much\; it is “funny\, revealing\, and very invigorating…You will encounter things that no US company would dare do.” (Chicago Tribune)
