SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Let the Earth Breathe. Photo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored and presented by the Wallenberg Medal and Lecture\, the African Studies Center\, and the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies.\n----\nLet the Earth Breathe: Photo Exhibition\nby Nnimmo Bassey\, 2024 Wallenberg Medalist\, Architect\, Poet\, and African Environmental Activist\; and Omolade Adunbi\, African Studies Center Director\n\nPhoto Exhibition: People Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution -\nOpening Reception: 3:30 PM (Light refreshments served)\nGalleryDAAS\, Haven Hall\, Ground Floor\, Room G648\, 505 S State St.\nExhibition Dates: September 9 - October 11\n\nPhoto Exhibition: Living\, Community\, and Polluted Environment\nInternational Institute Gallery\, Weiser Hall\, 5th Floor\, Room 547\, 500 Church St.\nExhibition Dates: September 9 - 27\n\n- - -\nAbout the Photo Exhibition:\n\nThe Niger Delta region of Nigeria has been described as one of the most polluted spaces in the entire world. For over 60 years\, the region has been host to the activities of multinational oil corporations who partner with the Nigerian state in exploiting oil for profit. Oil was first discovered in the region in 1956\, and the first shipment of the commodity to the international market occurred in 1958 with a consignment of about 5\,000 barrels per day (bpd). Production peaked at about 2.5 million bpd\, but today\, because of community protests\, insurgency\, and general disruption to the activities of corporations\, the number hovers between 1.2 million to 1.4 million bpd. While the state has benefited immensely from oil production\, the same cannot be said of the communities that are hosts to pipelines\, flow stations\, and all of the oil infrastructure that has come to define the entire region. Loss of livelihood\, heavily polluted environment\, death\, and displacement have characterized the region’s interaction with multinational oil corporations such as Shell\, Chevron\, ExxonMobil\, Eni\, Total Energies\, etc.\n\nThis exhibition is a bold attempt to shed light on what it means to live in an oil extractive enclave like the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The images showcase the lives lived\, the loss\, perseverance\, and determination to survive.\n\nThe exhibition is divided into two parts. The first part of the exhibition is displayed in the DAAS gallery with the sub-theme “People Crossings and the Dangers of Oil Pollution” and is a demonstration of the everyday lived experiences of the inhabitants of many of the enclaves of the Niger Delta. As depicted in the photos\, people cross polluted rivers to go to school and in search of a means of survival.\n\nGallery visitors are invited to cross from the DAAS Gallery to the International Institute Gallery on the 5th floor of Weiser Hall to see the second part of the exhibition\, “Living\, Community\, and Polluted Environment.” This portion of the exhibition demonstrates community resilience in the face of environmental persecution. It shows everyday life amid oil infrastructure that litters the entire landscape of many of the communities in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.\n\n— - - -\nNnimmo Bassey is an architect\, environmental justice activist\, writer\, and poet. His latest poetry collection is titled I See the Invisible (2023). Other collections include I Will Not Dance to Your Beat(2011) and We Thought It Was Oil But It Was Blood (2002). He is director of the ecological think-tank\, Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).\n\nOmolade Adunbi is a professor of Anthropology\, Afroamerican and African Studies and Law at the University of Michigan. His research examines the dynamics of power\, natural resource extractive practices\, governance\, human and environmental rights\, culture\, transnational institutions\, multinational corporations\, and the postcolonial state. His latest book\, Enclaves of Exception: Special Economic Zones and Extractive Practices in Nigeria (Indiana University Press\,2022)\, offers a new approach to exploring the relationship between oil and technologies of extraction and their interrelatedness to China’s interest in free trade zones and its impact on local livelihoods and environmental practices.\n\n*Nnimmo Bassey’s photos courtesy of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF).*

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Butch Closet
DESCRIPTION:In the multi-media installation *The Butch Closet*\, artist Phranc illustrates her life stories as a queer artist\, Jewish lesbian folk singer\, and \"cardboard cobbler.\" By meticulously re-creating personal objects and pieces of clothing out of paper\, cardboard\, thread\, and paint\, she revisits her own history\, contextualizing her experiences as an iconic performer\, and maker\, constructing\, reconstructing\, and re-imagining her image against a larger historical context of second-wave feminism and queer activism. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet* is the second iteration of the project\, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works. As part of the installation\, visitors can peer into a closet built in the center of the gallery designed by the artist. Conceptually\, the space shifts from inside to outside\, public and private\, and explores themes of visibility and that which remains inaccessible or unseen.\n\nAbout the artist:\nPhranc is a jewish lesbian folksinger and queer artist who uses song\, painting and sculpture to champion personal identities and illustrate the struggle\, survival\, and victory of the queer individual. An internationally acclaimed and award winning performer. Phranc’s work integrates humor and a butch lesbian aesthetic. Her current project\, Phranc Talk: The Butch Closet\, is a multi-media memoir that spans her 40-year career. Phranc lives and works in Santa Monica\, California and Vancouver\, British Columbia.\n\n*Phranc is the 2024 Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.*

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Colin Fogarty\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Statistics\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: A fundamental limitation of causal inference in observational studies is that perceived evidence for a treatment effect might instead be explained by factors not accounted for in the primary analysis. In a sensitivity analysis\, the researcher determines how much hidden bias would need to exist to materially alter the study's conclusions. Once the results of a sensitivity analysis are reported\, a critic seeking to undermine the observational study must argue that a proposed lurking variable impacts the odds of self-selection into treatment by at least the degree quantified by the sensitivity analysis\, rather than simply proposing a variable for which adjustment did not occur.\n\nWhen using covariate matching to adjust for overt bias\, conventional approaches to sensitivity analysis consider inference for a single outcome variable under the presumption that the treatment effect is constant for all individuals. In the first part of the talk\, we describe an approach to controlling the false discovery proportion in observational studies with multiple outcome variables while assessing robustness to unmeasured confounding: for any candidate subset of outcome variables\, we provide sensitivity intervals for the proportion of outcomes within the set that are unaffected by the treatment. In the second portion of the talk\, we introduce and compare recent proposals for extending methods for sensitivity analysis to heterogeneous treatment effects. In so doing\, we highlight the role of conditional inverse probability weighting in improving the power of a sensitivity analysis. \n\nhttps://sites.google.com/umich.edu/fogartyc

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Kelly Church & Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: September 13 – December 7\, 2024Opening Reception: September 19\, 2024\n\nKelly Church &amp\; Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue is a major exhibition that centers the subjectivities of two contemporary Indigenous artists whose practices have sustained and bolstered the relevance of the age-old Anishinaabe practice of black ash basket-making in the 21st century. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter\, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors)\, young folx\, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories\, as well as those of survivance and resilience\, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps\, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA\, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing\, thinking\, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus\, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women’s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers\, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on\, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole\, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works\, including 15-17 new works. Together\, the exhibition offers an incisive critique of the colonial\, racist paradigm of systemic erasure and assimilation that continues to this day\, with the ongoing crises of missing and murdered Indigenous women\, culture wars\, and climate change that threaten Indigenous ways of living\, sustenance\, and making. \nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra with Curatorial Assistant Zoi Crampton.\nStamps Gallery is grateful to Michigan Humanities and U-M Arts Initiative for generously supporting the exhibition and programs.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Friday Lecture Series | Holy Things in Thailand and the Spectre of Syncretism
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/jZek2\n\nContemporary Thai Buddhists worship a variety of “holy things” (sing saksit)\, including spirits\, gods\, and Buddha images\, in nearly identical ways for mundane boons. Although the model of syncretism has largely been rejected in Religious Studies\, aspects of the Thai worship of these holy things\, as well as the language used by Thai Buddhists themselves\, still stubbornly seems to suggest that syncretism is at play. In this talk\, which is based on his book\, Holy Things: The Genealogy of the Sacred in Thai Religion\, which was recently released by Oxford University Press\, McGovern answers the question\, If syncretism is so wrong\, then why does it feel so right?\n \nNathan McGovern is a scholar of Asian religions teaching at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater since 2016. He received his PhD in Religious Studies in 2013 and has lived and worked in Thailand\, Taiwan\, Germany\, Canada\, and the United States. His work focuses on interrogating the boundary between Buddhism and Hinduism in ancient India and in Thailand. His latest book. The Snake and the Mongoose\, published with Oxford University Press in 2019.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at cseas@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Great Lakes Seminar Series with Allison Steiner
DESCRIPTION:About the presentation: The Laurentian Great Lakes can influence regional climate and chemistry through a variety of mechanisms\, and I’ll discuss these chemistry-climate interactions from the perspective of what goes up (e.g.\, water via evaporation\, aerosols via lake spray) versus what comes down (e.g.\, aerosol deposition of nutrients\, precipitation). From the climate perspective\, we analyze the atmospheric moisture budget in the Great Lakes region using reanalyses and future climate model data to develop a process-level understanding of the precipitation seasonality. We identify the lakes not only as a source of moisture\, but also in generating localized moisture flux convergence/divergence patterns that affect the seasonality of the water cycle. Despite differences in historical simulations from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) data archive\, common patterns of change are present in the future projections of the atmospheric water budget. Specifically\, summer drying and winter/spring wetting by mid-century is consistent across models\, indicating a shift in the precipitation seasonal cycle towards colder months\, while evapotranspiration magnitudes revealed unambiguous increases throughout the year in all models. Overall\, the atmospheric transport of moisture is the primary driver of future precipitation changes\, with an amplification of the moisture flux convergence seasonal cycle in future climate model simulations. From the atmospheric chemistry perspective\, I’ll discuss the role of the lakes as a source or sink for chemical constituents in the atmosphere. Emissions of lake spray aerosol (LSA) can be a regional source of aerosol\, and including LSA in regional chemistry models increases aerosol pH in the Great Lakes region and enables the partitioning of nitrate to the aerosol phase. Overall\, this suggests that LSA should be included in regional assessments of atmospheric chemistry and air quality. The deposition of atmospheric aerosols is a source of phosphorus to the Great Lakes region\, and while this contribution is small compared to surface runoff\, it has not been well-constrained. We quantify the phosphorus deposition to the Great Lakes using a combination of ground-based measurements and models across the region\, and highlight uncertainties in this atmospheric source of phosphorus.\n\nAbout the speaker: Allison L. Steiner is a Professor of Atmospheric Sciences in the Department of Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering at the University of Michigan. She received her B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University and her Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Her research uses and develops models to explore the interactions of the biosphere and atmosphere\, with the goal of understanding the natural versus human influence on climate and atmospheric chemistry. She is the recipient of the Walter Orr Roberts Lecture from the American Meteorological Society (2022)\, the Ascent Award from the Atmospheric Sciences section of the American Geophysical Union (2015)\, and the University of Michigan Henry Russel Award (2013). SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Inheritance: 11 Years in the Life of One Boy in the Opioid Epidemic
DESCRIPTION:Inheritance: 11 Years in the Life of One Boy in the Opioid Epidemic\nAmy Toensing and Matt Moyer\, National Geographic\nFriday\, September 27\, 2024\, noon ET\nSSW ECC 1840\nAlso available to watch online: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hi4GyWFL3k\n\nA screening of the documentary will take place after the talk at 2pm in the same room.\n\nDirected by Amy Toensing and Matt Moyer\, the documentary\"Inheritance\" explores the underlying causes of the opioid epidemic in America through the life of one boy and five generations of his extended family over 11 years. Curtis\, a bright and hopeful 12-year-old\, grows up surrounded by love and struggle while every adult in his family – parents\, grandparents\, aunts\, uncles\, and cousins – battles addiction. Curtis’s America is a country where people and communities are struggling with an epidemic of substance use disorder\, joblessness\, poverty\, and a deteriorating sense of belonging.\n\nReal World Perspectives on Poverty Solutions introduces key issues regarding the causes and consequences of poverty through an in-person lecture series featuring experts in policy and practice from across the nation. Our goal is to help build a broad community of learners to engage in these issues together.\n\nThis series is free and open to the public\, but is also a one-credit course available for U-M students during the Fall 2024 semester. Students can enroll in SWK 503 001 or U-M class 26997 on Canvas.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Museum Studies Program\, Museums at Noon
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: How can we reimagine the future of museums? How do we make museums decolonial? How does this decolonial practice change our perception of what a museum can be\, and how do we present it to the public? In this talk I will share my experience interning at the Organization QuestaèRoma in Rome\, Italy\, and present their approach in engaging the public with decolonial practices through varied events\, and specifically through their decolonial tours of the capital. These tours highlight what is \"hidden in plain sight\" : the distant and not-so-distant architectural remnants of colonial history that is often unobserved\, taken for granted and/or unquestioned by the locals and tourists alike.\n\nPresentation by Gala Patenkovica\, PhD Candidate in the French Program of Romance Languages and Literatures. Her dissertation addresses representations of immigration and belonging in contemporary French comic books. She holds an active interest in visual and museum studies.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Non-Western Marxisms: Challenges and Opportunities of a Concept
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will assess the conceptual and political implications of Marxism’s expansion beyond Europe. Given the scarcity of scholarship presenting a “South-South” perspective on Marxist theory and practice\, I will place previous work concerning the critical reception and translation of Marxism in Latin America in dialogue with other traditions from Africa\, Asia\, and the Caribbean. The aim will be to move beyond a tendency within traditional Marxist historiography to treat peripheral regions as isolated cases rather than sites of theoretical elaboration with universal implications.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Noon at Night Presents: Climate Emergency & Speculative Fiction
DESCRIPTION:If you plan to attend virtually or would like to watch a recording sent later\, please register using the form linked on this page. We will send a link via email.\n\nNoon at Night is a wandering classroom that prototypes creative adaptation to crisis. Through experimental performance\, Noon at Night connects subversive learners and educators in higher education institutions worldwide in solidarity and interdependence. Incubating within the University of Michigan during the 2024-25 academic year\, Noon at Night has situated its study and practice at the intersection of climate emergency\, grief\, and imperialism.\n\nIn the academic year 2025\, Noon at Night will host a series of public events and workshops that immerse UM students and community members in potential future climate-related crises and create opportunities to practice mutual aid through speculative fiction and performance. Each program will focus on a possible crisis in our near-term future and invite participants to ask: what will I do in this situation and who can I turn to?\n\nThis hybrid interactive discussion is part of a creative resilience series to foster knowledge and skill development around collective disaster preparedness and climate emergency adaptation. This is in collaboration with Jen Rae from the Centre for Reworlding\, Syrus Marcus Ware\, students at University of Wisconsin - Madison\, UofM students\, and campus and non-campus community members. This serves as a primer for a public\, day-long series of creative climate adaptation workshops on October 11\, mapping the unique climate disaster vulnerability of UM and imagining creative responses to prepare for disasters and build resilient systems in the future. In November\, UM students will join students at UW Madison and other transgressive educators worldwide to imagine how higher education institutions can generatively respond to climate disasters through a speculative fiction radio theater performance. This project will dramatize current and impending climate catastrophes\, recording and transmitting survival skill workshops in a participatory drama.\n\nJoin artists Jen Rae\, Syrus Marcus Ware\, and dawn weleski as they discuss the role of artists in responding and adapting to the climate crisis.\n\n______________________________\n\nDr Jen Rae is an award-winning artist and researcher of Canadian Scottish-Métis (Indigenous) descent living on unceded Djaara Country (Castlemaine) Australia. She is recognised for her practice and expertise situated at the intersections of art\, speculative futures and climate emergency disaster adaptation + resilience – predominantly articulated through transdisciplinary collaborations\, multi-platform projects\, community alliances and public pedagogies. Jen creates and contributes to experimental multi-platform collaborative projects balanced with professional mentoring of other artists\, public talks\, workshops and deep socially-engaged projects with diverse partners and communities. Most relevant is her role as a core artist of Arts House’s prescient REFUGE project (2016-2022) - where artists\, emergency service providers and communities worked together to rehearse climate-related emergencies exploring the impact of creativity in disaster preparedness. Relevant projects during REFUGE include the speculative fiction short film REFUGIUM (co-written with Claire G. Coleman)\; PORTAGE: SHELTER2CAMP in collaboration with 4 First Nations master weavers to co-build 6 life-size disaster shelters with over 120 community participants and partners\; the FIRST ASSEMBLY OF THE CENTRE FOR REWORLDING event\; and\, the art exhibition RESURGENCE. All are grounded in First Nations knowledge systems and protocols\, exploring themes climate\, colonisation\, disaster preparedness and intergenerational justice.\n\nSyrus Marcus Ware is a Vanier Scholar\, visual artist\, activist\, curator\, and educator. Using painting\, installation\, and performance\, Syrus works with and explores social justice frameworks and Black activist culture. His work has been shown widely\, including solo shows at Grunt Gallery in 2018 )2068:Touch Change) and Wil Aballe Art Projects in 2021 (Irresistible Revolutions). His work has been featured as part of the inaugural Toronto Biennial of Art in 2019 in conjunction with the Ryerson Image Centre (Antarctica and Ancestors\, Do You Read Us? (Dispatches from the Future))\, as well as for the Bentway’s Safety in Public Spaces Initiative in 2020 (Radical Love). Syrus has participated in group shows at the Never Apart in Montreal\, the Art Gallery of Ontario\, the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery\, the Art Gallery of York University\, the Art Gallery of Windsor\, and as part of the curated content at Nuit Blanche 2017 (The Stolen People\; Won't Back Down). His performance works have been part of festivals across Canada\, including at Cripping The Stage (Harbourfront Centre\, 2016 & 2019)\, Complex Social Change (University of Lethbridge Art Gallery\, 2015) and Decolonizing and Decriminalizing Trans Genres (University of Winnipeg\, 2015). \n\ndawn weleski (they/she) is UM Student Life Sustainability's Artist in Residence. weleski is internationally renowned for their participatory\, politically-engaged work\, activating and broadcasting the stories of individuals and groups that normative institutions fail to provide. They co-founded and co-directed Conflict Kitchen\, a seven-year\, seven-day-a-week restaurant that served cuisines from countries in conflict with the United States\, and City Council Wrestling\, where professional-ameatur wrestlers\, local residents and City Council members personified their political interests into wrestling characters that figuratively and literally fought out their conflicts in the wrestling ring. They regularly exhibit and produce public projects around the world\, and most recently exhibited at Cooper Hewitt\, Smithsonian Design Museum 2022-23. weleski holds a BFA in Visual Art with a concentration in Contextual Practice from Carnegie Mellon University and a MFA in Art Practice from Stanford University.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Resistance against an Expansionist State: The Case of Jalieza in Early Classic (AD 200-500) Oaxaca
DESCRIPTION:Joseph “Weston” Wardle is a PhD candidate at the University of Michigan. Since 2023\, he has directed the Cerro Danilín Archaeological Project at Jalieza in Oaxaca\, Mexico. The project aims to understand how the Zapotec state centered at Monte Albán fragmented\, and the role that conflict and resistance played in the process. \n\nSometime during the Early Classic (AD 200-500) in the Valley of Oaxaca\, a community was founded on the hilltop of Jalieza\, in its westernmost section called Cerro Danilín. It has long been assumed that Monte Albán was at the peak of its power at this time\, but archaeological fieldwork in recent decades suggests that fragmentation may have begun in outlying provinces\, and in the valley\, close to Monte Albán. Because of its sudden founding and relatively rapid growth\, I propose that Jalieza was a refuge for people resisting Monte Albán inside the valley. Resistance was a major force during the rise of the expansionist state and likely never went away. I will present the preliminary results of two field seasons of excavations at Jalieza and a study of fortification in the Valley of Oaxaca\, both of which suggest that conflict and resistance were present inside the valley during the Early Classic.

SUMMARY:Performance:Adam Lenhart\, carillon: Celebrating the Life\, Legacy & Music of JANIS JOPLIN
DESCRIPTION:Undergraduate student Adam Lenhart presents a recital celebrating the life\, legacy and music of Janis Joplin (1943-1970). Lenhart will perform Joplin's music on the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Carillon\, an instrument of 60 bells with the lowest bell (bourdon) weighing 6 tons.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Lurie Carillon every weekday that classes are in session. During these recitals\, visitors may take the elevator to level 2 to view the largest bells\, or to level 3 to see the carillonist performing. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Interrogating the How and Why of Contemporary Workplace Discrimination
DESCRIPTION:Research on race and gender discrimination in workplace organizations typically (1) assumes constraining effects of bureaucratic structure on the capacity of powerful actors to discriminate and/or (2) reverts to micro-level interpretations of unfair treatment—interpretations that highlight implicit biases of gatekeepers. Such approaches generally overlook high and ongoing levels of discrimination reported yearly to the EEOC and Civil Rights organizations. Moreover\, such orientations are theoretically problematic by ignoring how bureaucratic structures and practices are embedded within legal protections for employers and\, moreover\, are permeated by culturally normative racialized and gendered hierarchies. Drawing on a current book project and nearly 1\,000 workplace discrimination cases across 8 U.S. states\, Roscigno highlights in this talk how contemporary race and gender vulnerabilities to discrimination are tied to ongoing legal loopholes—loopholes that confer leverage to employers—and how culturally resonant notions of the “ideal” worker continue to be activated in important\, discriminatory ways\, often using seemingly neutral bureaucratic standards. The permeation of race-and gender-laden presumptions into organizations\, their activation relative to oversight and bureaucratic policing\, and the invoking of race- and gender-blind bureaucratic discourses to legitimate discriminatory conduct are crucial to understanding the roots of contemporary inequality production within organizations.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Department Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Title: Speech acts\, exclamatives\, and emotive content: the Stoic approach\n\nAbstract: What is the content of exclamative sentences like “the Alcázar is beautiful!” and “how she looks like her sister”? How does it relate to speech acts? To propositions? To truth-values? These are questions which the Stoics contemplated. From a contemporary perspective\, their answers combine the familiar with the unorthodox\, which makes them thought provoking. I trace the – sparse – evidence of the Stoic treatment of such contents in our sources\, show how it is rooted in Stoic logic\, semantics\, and metaphysics\, consider how it connects with emotivism\, and explore its philosophical relevance.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:International Students Career Series: How to Navigate Small Talk
DESCRIPTION:In the United States\, many people participate in what is called \"small talk\"\, where you make conversation with strangers or acquaintances about non-controversial topics\, such as the weather\, sports\, or popular television shows. “Small talk” is one of the ways in American culture to chat about harmless topics in order to establish a connection and start to build a friendship. For example\, while waiting for an interview\, in line at a M-Den\, or in an elevator on campus\, don’t be startled if a stranger says something to you like\, “Did you watch the Football Game last night? What a game!” They might also make a joke aboutthe long line you’re both in\, or comment on the current situation. If you are interested in learning more about \"small talk\"\, now it’syour chance to sign up for this workshop on how to navigate small talk asan international student. In this workshop\, we will educate you on what is small talk and you will also have the chance to practice small talk with Peers!

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Operahedron Lattices (Combinatorics Seminar)
DESCRIPTION:Two classical lattices are the Tamari lattice on bracketings of a word and the weak order on permutations. The Hasse diagram of each of these lattices is the oriented 1-skeleton of a polytope\, the associahedron and the permutohedron respectively.\n\nWe examine a poset on bracketings of rooted trees whose Hasse diagram is the oriented 1-skeleton of a polytope called the operahedron. We show this poset is a lattice which answers a question of Laplante-Anfossi. These lattices provide an extremely natural generalization of both the Tamari lattice and the weak order.\n\nNo knowledge of lattices or polyhedral combinatorics is assumed.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Jacob Napieralski\, UM-Dearborn
DESCRIPTION:The United States government sponsored the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation (HOLC) in the 1930s to assess and grade neighborhoods based on perceived financial risk. The grades were influenced by the presence of minority racial groups\, immigrants\, and residents with lower socioeconomic statuses and\, even though the practice was eventually outlawed\, the impact on low income and underrepresented minorities is still prevalent today. This study was designed to assess spatial patterns and intensity of flood risk to (a) HOLC grade\, (b) proximity to coastal zones\, (c) intensity of vegetative cover\, and (d) relationship to buried (ghost) streams and wetlands to determine which variable has the most impact on flood risk. Flood risk data\, acquired from First Street Foundation’s Flood Factor dataset\, was summarized by HOLC grade\, and ghost streams and wetlands were digitized from historical maps and aggregated by HOLC grade. The results show flood risk is higher in C and D graded neighborhoods\, compared to A and B. Regardless of HOLC grade\, neighborhoods near the Detroit River and Lake St. Claire have 10 times higher flood risk than inland neighborhoods. Interestingly\, B-graded neighborhoods exhibit minimal impact from buried rivers and wetlands\, but that risk increases substantially if there is a history of stream or wetland burial within a D graded neighborhood. Flood risk is disproportionately distributed\, caused in part by outlawed\, racist housing policies. Understanding where risk is highest can help identify optimum locations for adaptation measures to minimize flood damage in these neighborhoods.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Lecture Series | *Antar*: Translation and the Afterlives of Gandhi’s Autobiography
DESCRIPTION:Mahatma Gandhi's autobiography\, *An Autobiography or The Story of My Experiments with Truth*\, is one of the most translated texts in the world. Written primarily in his mother tongue\, Gujarati\, the autobiography is a hybrid amalgamation of the personal\, political and spiritual in Gandhi's life. Examining how the autobiography has traveled into most world languages in the past hundred years makes for a fascinating history.\n \n However\, Kothari chooses to tell a different story - one that is not only one of translation - but in translation. The genre of autobiography\, as we know\, was new to India in the nineteenth century. The notion of self-telling its own story\, being both the tale's creator and the object of telling\, required many forms of negotiation in a society of collectivities.\n \n In Gujarati\, the beginning had been made with varying outcomes\, and M.K. Gandhi could have simply based his autobiographical endeavor on the existing examples. However\, Gandhi's experiment was unique to him. How did he reconcile the communal with the individual and contain\, as it were\, the egotism threatened by the form? One of the ways to think of what Gandhi does is by looking at what he does with the form - an act of roopantar\, or changing the form. The suffix antar is crucial to our discussion - a word that signals difference and interiority. Through a close reading of Gandhi's framing questions in the autobiography and moving back and forth between Gujarati\, English\, Sindhi\, Hindi and many other translations\, this talk will show how the autobiography translates and how it does not.\n \n Rita Kothari is an English professor at Ashoka University and directs the Ashoka Centre for Translation. A distinguished translator\, Kothari is also a leading theoretician of translation studies\; internationally known for books such as *Translating India: The Cultural Politics of English* and *A Multilingual Nation and Chutnefying English and Decentring Translation Studies*.\n \n Her translations of note include *Angaliyat: The Stepchild from Gujarati\, Unbordered Memories from Sindhi*\, and the *Patan Trilogy by K.M. Munshi from Gujarati*. Her work on partition and borders intervened to bring the unusual Sindhi experience in books such as *The Burden of Refuge* and the study of the Indo-Pak border region in *Memories and Movements*.\n \n Kothari is a multilingual scholar\, and her interest in translation manifests in the way she moves between various languages through research and pedagogy. She also writes extensively on language politics\, partition\, and literary and social traditions of Gujarat and Sindh and Hindi cinema. Her recent book is *Uneasy Translations: Self\, Experience\, and Indian Literature*.\n\n*Made possible with the generous support of the Title VI grant from the U.S. Department of Education.*\n\nFree and open to the public

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GEOMETRY SEMINAR: The natural flow and homological vanishing in nonpositively curved manifolds
DESCRIPTION:We introduce a flow on nonpositively curved manifolds inspired by the natural maps of Besson\, Courtois and Gallot for which the Morse theoretic data can be computed in terms of the geometric structure of the manifold. We present several applications of this flow\, including conditions for the nonexistence of complex subvarieties and estimates of the Cheeger constant on such manifolds. Most importantly\, we show the vanishing of the homology of discrete subgroups of isometries of a Hadamard space above a certain threshold which is computable from the geometry the Hadamard space and the critical exponent of the representation of the fundamental group. Time permitting\, we will present some examples including those arising from Anosov representations in higher rank lie groups. This is joint work with Shi Wang and Ben McReynolds.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Two Dads Defending Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Joe Walsh\, Former Tea Party Congressional Representative (R-IL) and gun-rights supporter\, and Fred Guttenberg\, a businessman-turned-activist following his daughter’s murder in the 2018 Parkland school shooting\, once had a vitriolic relationship on Twitter (now X) and national networks. Recognizing the damage of such divisive posturing\, Walsh and Guttenberg began to forge a friendship. Join us for a conversation between two high-profile advocates from opposite ends of the political spectrum who found common ground on contentious issues through respect\, understanding\, and a willingness to listen and learn.\n\nSpeaker Bios:\n\nJoe Walsh is a former Republican Congressman from Illinois elected to Congress in the Tea Party wave of 2010. Following his service in Congress\, Walsh became one of the most popular conservative talk radio hosts in the country\, syndicated in major markets throughout the U.S. In August of 2019 Joe became a candidate for President of the\nUnited States\, waging a Republican primary challenge against Donald Trump. \n\nJoe is currently the Director of The Social Contract and the host of a podcast called\, “White Flag With Joe Walsh\,” where Joe has weekly conversations with other well-known people to model how to have respectful\nconversations with those you disagree with. Joe comes from the MAGA base and also spends a lot of time engaging\, respectfully\, with that base. \n\nFred Guttenberg began his public life after the murder of his beautiful 14-year-old daughter Jaime. The day after the murder\, Fred attended a public vigil in Parkland. While there\, the Mayor asked him to speak. His words shook a nation.\nFred has traveled the country talking about perspective\, perseverance\, and resilience. He discusses pivotal moments in our life and how we respond to those moments. Fred Guttenberg’s professional life previously included over a decade of experience management with Johnson and Johnson\, followed by almost 15 years as an entrepreneur.\n\nRegistration is required.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Xiongnu: The World's First Nomadic Empire by Bryan Miller
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate Professor Miller's new book\, \"Xiongnu: The World's Nomadic Empire.\"\nXiongnu raises the case of the world's first nomadic empire as a prime example of the sophisticated developments and powerful influence of nomadic regimes. By weaving together archaeological examinations with historical investigations\, the book presents a more complex and nuanced narrative of how an empire based firmly in the steppe over two thousand years ago managed to formulate a robust political economy and a complex political matrix that capitalized on mobilities and alternative forms of political participation\, and allowed the Xiongnu to dominate vast realms of central Eurasia and leave lasting geopolitical effects on the many worlds around them.

SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:Steven Glazer Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Steve Glazer earned his BFA in art with a concentration in ceramics from Eastern Michigan University\, a master’s degree in art from Central Michigan University\, and MFA in fine arts and ceramics from Indiana State University. Since 2004\, Glazer has been lead faculty and head of ceramics at Henry Ford College\, and former faculty of Concord College (WV) and North Dakota State University. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the country.\n\nThroughout his adult life the art of Steve Glazer has been done as a response to his environment. From a series of shadow box type pieces containing life like ceramic fish while teaching at a Catholic woman’s college\, to building 8’ tall ceramic “skyscrapers” that barely fit into the display spaces while teaching in North Dakota\, where no skyscrapers exist\, and then creating installations commenting on living in Appalachia while teaching in southern West Virginia. After returning home to Detroit\, Glazer began his griot series\, the “Motor City Griot Society” masks\, the faces of the superheroes that will save Detroit\, and more recently the “Motor City Griot Patrol” creatures that will protect the city of Detroit.\n\n\nArtist Reception\, September 27\, 5-7 pm. SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:Susan Moran Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Susan Moran’s work is inspired by the natural world and our place in it. She collects and arranges images\, builds and subtracts\, and uses processes that suit the concepts and gives the pieces a reason for existing as textiles. Simultaneously she strives to make the medium influence the outcome in such a way that cloth and image meld together. Moran uses silkscreen\, shibori\, and stitching to embed images from her daily walks into the fabric. it's important that the work builds slowly\, involving meditative processes that connect her to the cloth and the source of the design.\n\nExhibition Dates: September 27-December 14\, 2024\nArtist Reception: September 27\, 5-7 pm\nParking free after 5 pm

SUMMARY:Performance:7 Hours Difference Part II: Simple Present Tense
DESCRIPTION:‘Present Simple Tense’ is a full evening length devised dance theater work created by the renowned guest artist Tatyana Solokova in collaboration with the cast. The piece is the second part of the international collaboration project between Tatyana Sokolova at New Bulgarian University (NBU) in Sofia and Tzveta Kassabova at University of Michigan\, Department of Theatre and Drama. The first piece premiered this May in Sofia and will be performed regularly at NBU throughout the next year. Both works bridge the gap between the genres of visual art\, music\, theater\, and movement. They explore similar themes and subject matters\, but viewed from two very different cultures that are more than an ocean apart. At the center of our project is the question ‘How much does one need to be happy?’ – how many things\, how much money\, how much work\, how much interaction\, how much loneliness\, how much care\, how much dreaming\, how much playing\, how much talking? But also\, when is it too much\, what happens when a line is crossed? A metaphor and a starting point for our exploration is logorrhea – a state of excessive and often incoherent talkativeness or wordiness. We extrapolate this notion into many physical\, behavioral and social aspects and interactions. We also explore human senses - how and why do we prioritize the use of our senses\, what happens when we try to explore each of them individually? What happens when we try to liming the predominant sense in various circumstances and how can that generate movement material and influence the overall structure of the work? Our overarching question is what is idiosyncratic\, what is cultural and what is universal?

SUMMARY:Performance:Fight Night | Ontroerend Goed
DESCRIPTION:Five candidates. One winner. You decide who survives. \n\nOn the brink of a presidential election that people on both sides have called the most consequential in history\, Belgium’s extraordinary Ontroerend Goed offers a fun and thought-provoking\, examination of free will and politics that puts electronic voting devices — and the candidates’ fates — directly into the hands of audience members.\n\nFirst created in 2013\, seemingly a lifetime ago in the political landscape\, this critically acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe Festival hit has been reimagined for the present day\, with each performance taking a different turn depending on those in the audience. This resolutely political show contains no identifiable political message\, ideology\, or social or economic reality\, but draws attention to the reasons and motivations that cause people to vote in a certain way and how the battle for our attention\, sympathy\, and approval reveal surprising and superficial snap judgments. If you are sick and tired of the constant bombardment of political antagonism in every facet of life\, this immersive and sharp analysis of democracy will force you to step back and consider why we care so much\; it is “funny\, revealing\, and very invigorating…You will encounter things that no US company would dare do.” (Chicago Tribune)

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an enriching discussion on the exhibition \"Silver Linings: Celebrating the Spelman Art Collection\" led by its curator\, Liz Andrews.\nThis exhibition\, developed in collaboration with the Art Bridges Foundation\, marks the 25th anniversary of the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art and underscores its mission to elevate art by and about women of the African diaspora. Spanning over a century of African American art\, the Spelman College art collection is a testament to the rich and diverse history of Black artistic expression.\n“Silver Linings” features 40 works from the Spelman collection\, highlighting a broad spectrum of artistic styles\, materials\, and historical contexts. The exhibition invites viewers to explore themes of identity\, color\, materiality\, history\, and the concept of “place\,” reflecting the varied experiences of artists from the African diaspora in the United States and Western Europe.\nLiz Andrews\, who has been the Director of the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art since August 2021\, has curated nationally recognized exhibitions and created dynamic public programs. Her work has provided invaluable opportunities for students to engage with art\, curating\, and collections management. Before joining Spelman\, Andrews was part of the Director’s Office at LACMA\, where she co-curated the acclaimed “Black American Portraits” exhibition and contributed to its accompanying book. A Denver native\, Andrews holds a B.A. from Wesleyan University\, an M.A. from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts\, and a Ph.D. in Cultural Studies.\n\"Silver Linings: Celebrating the Spelman Art Collection\" is on view at the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) through January 5\, 2025.\nPresented in partnership with the University of Michigan Museum of Art. \nSeries presenting partners: Detroit PBS and PBS Books. SUMMARY:Performance:Kaitlin Butts
DESCRIPTION:A truly one-of-a-kind artist\, Kaitlin Butts has a deep affinity for country music’s more theatrical side: the extravagant storytelling\, dazzling showmanship\, songs embedded with both unbridled emotion and quick-fire humor. After discovering her passion for performing as a little girl\, the Tulsa native later brought her boundless energy and radiant voice to her own unapologetic yet soulful songwriting. When it came time to create her third album\, the Nashville-based musician leaned into her lifelong love of musical theater and dreamed up a modern-day reimagining of the soundtrack to her all-time favorite musical\, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! The result: a high-concept but candidly autobiographical LP called Roadrunner!\, whose 17 powerhouse songs show the full force and extraordinary depth of Butts’ artistry for the very first time.\n\nProduced by Oran Thornton (Brent Cobb\, Logan Brill)\, Roadrunner! marks a major tonal shift from Butts’ 2022 sophomore LP what else can she do\, a character-driven exploration of complex matters like addiction\, domestic violence\, and generational trauma. “With the last album I wanted to write about the struggles I’d seen people go through or experienced myself\, so a lot of the songs had a sadness or darkness to them\,” she says. “I feel like Roadrunner! is much closer to what I’m like onstage\, where there’s real emotion and truth but also humor and a tendency to poke fun. It’s all those different versions of me at once.” Roadrunner! ultimately matches that multidimensionality with a lush and fiery sound informed by Butts’ eclectic influences (outlaw country\, strong-minded country-pop\, timeless rock-and-roll\, and more).\n\nhttps://www.kaitlinbutts.com/
