SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Steve Glazer Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Steve Glazer earned his BFA in art with a concentration in ceramics from Eastern Michigan University\, a master’s degree in art from Central Michigan University\, and MFA in fine arts and ceramics from Indiana State University. Since 2004\, Glazer has been lead faculty and head of ceramics at Henry Ford College\, and former faculty of Concord College (WV) and North Dakota State University. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the country.\n\nThroughout his adult life the art of Steve Glazer has been done as a response to his environment. From a series of shadow box type pieces containing life like ceramic fish while teaching at a Catholic woman’s college\, to building 8’ tall ceramic “skyscrapers” that barely fit into the display spaces while teaching in North Dakota\, where no skyscrapers exist\, and then creating installations commenting on living in Appalachia while teaching in southern West Virginia. After returning home to Detroit\, Glazer began his griot series\, the “Motor City Griot Society” masks\, the faces of the superheroes that will save Detroit\, and more recently the “Motor City Griot Patrol” creatures that will protect the city of Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Susan Moran Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Susan Moran’s work is inspired by the natural world and our place in it. She collects and arranges images\, builds and subtracts\, and uses processes that suit the concepts and gives the pieces a reason for existing as textiles. Simultaneously she strives to make the medium influence the outcome in such a way that cloth and image meld together. Moran uses silkscreen\, shibori\, and stitching to embed images from her daily walks into the fabric. it's important that the work builds slowly\, involving meditative processes that connect her to the cloth and the source of the design.\n\nGallery hours: Monday-Friday\, 9 am to 5pm or by appointment serrag@med.umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Butch Closet
DESCRIPTION:In the multi-media installation *The Butch Closet*\, artist Phranc illustrates her life stories as a queer artist\, Jewish lesbian folk singer\, and \"cardboard cobbler.\" By meticulously re-creating personal objects and pieces of clothing out of paper\, cardboard\, thread\, and paint\, she revisits her own history\, contextualizing her experiences as an iconic performer\, and maker\, constructing\, reconstructing\, and re-imagining her image against a larger historical context of second-wave feminism and queer activism. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet* is the second iteration of the project\, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works. As part of the installation\, visitors can peer into a closet built in the center of the gallery designed by the artist. Conceptually\, the space shifts from inside to outside\, public and private\, and explores themes of visibility and that which remains inaccessible or unseen.\n\nAbout the artist:\nPhranc is a jewish lesbian folksinger and queer artist who uses song\, painting and sculpture to champion personal identities and illustrate the struggle\, survival\, and victory of the queer individual. An internationally acclaimed and award winning performer. Phranc’s work integrates humor and a butch lesbian aesthetic. Her current project\, Phranc Talk: The Butch Closet\, is a multi-media memoir that spans her 40-year career. Phranc lives and works in Santa Monica\, California and Vancouver\, British Columbia.\n\n*Phranc is the 2024 Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.*

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Redistribution and Investment
DESCRIPTION:This paper studies the trade-offs associated with income redistribution in an overlapping generations model in which marginal savings rates increase with permanent income. By transferring permanent income from high savers to low savers\, redistribution lowers aggregate savings\, and depresses investment in capital. If more capital is welfare improving\, the government faces a trade-off between redistribution and investment which depends on the distribution of marginal propensties to save. I estimate this distribution using U.S. household panel data\, and use my estimates to calibrate a quantitative overlapping generations model with uninsurable idiosyncratic earnings risk. I study the effects of a simple labor income redistribution policy in this calibrated model and a standard model with homogeneous marginal savings rates. The direct effect of the policy on the permanent income distribution has no effect on capital in a standard model\, but a large effect in the calibrated model. This channel accounts for 23% of the drop in aggregate consumption following the policy.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Tuesday Seminar Series - Integrating genomic\, morphological\, and paleontological data to unravel macroevolutionary drivers of morphological diversity in fishes
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our ongoing Tuesday Seminar Series.\n\nAbout the seminar: Perhaps one of the most apparent\, yet captivating\, natural phenomena is the diversity of shape and form which has evolved on Earth. Morphological evolution is shaped by numerous factors across multiple biological scales\, yet there is still much to be discovered using novel techniques and integrative approaches. By combining insights from phylogenetic comparative methods\, paleoclimatic models\, geometric morphometrics\, and comparative transcriptomics\, my dissertation research provides a multi-faceted approach to understanding the factors (ecological\, environmental\, and genetic) contributing to the evolution of body size and shape in fishes. In Chapter 1\, I use paleoclimate data in conjunction with a newly inferred phylogeny based on both extant and fossil species to examine how past ocean temperature is correlated with body size in fishes\, finding strong support for increasing body size over time in relation to decreasing oceanic temperatures. In Chapter 2\, I utilize data from three-dimensional CT scans of both fossil and extant species to investigate widescale drivers of morphological evolution in relation to habitat and key innovations. I find that the evolution of the beak in tetraodontiform fishes (pufferfishes\, ocean sunfishes\, and allies) promotes rapid morphological evolution in the skull and may be a pivotal innovation that has enabled these fishes to expand into new ecological and dietary niches. Lastly\, in Chapter 3\, I employ comparative transcriptomics and differential expression analyses to investigate genetic convergence of body size reduction on a macroevolutionary scale and identify several candidate genes involved in miniaturization in goby fishes. Overall\, my research provides new insights into the large-scale processes and dynamics which have shaped the evolution of morphological diversity.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | On Some Popular Views about the Chinese Language
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: \nhttps://myumi.ch/qVE14\n\nThis talk examines some popular views on the Chinese language. For example\, many believe that\, because each English word has many affixed forms\, English has many times more words than Chinese. In addition\, because English has more words\, it can express ideas more clearly than Chinese. Moreover\, because Chinese cannot express ideas clearly\, it requires more mental effort to read Chinese. To verify such views\, a detailed comparison is made between a modern English dictionary and a modern Chinese dictionary. It is found that they have similar numbers of roots (unaffixed words) and similar numbers of lexical entries. In addition\, most English affixes have a Chinese counterpart\, which means Chinese does not lack the ingredients to express whatever subtle meanings English can. There is a major difference between the two languages though: Chinese tends to omit all redundant information\, while English often must repeat it. The difference does not always make English clearer but may introduce additional confusions.\n \nSan Duanmu is Professor of Linguistics\, University of Michigan. He received his PhD in Linguistics from MIT in 1990 and has held teaching posts at Fudan University\, Shanghai (1981-1986) and the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor (1991-present). His research focuses on general properties of language\, especially those in phonology. \n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at chinese.studies@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:DSI Lecture Series | Digital Technology and Body Memory
DESCRIPTION:Digital technology impacts how we connect with one another and therefore attune. Where we might mutually recognize a shared togetherness within the digital sphere\, we might also discover a feeling of alienation\, horror\, or even seduction. These are all forms of attunement that are mediated by digital technology. In this talk\, Dr. Roxanne will introduce their work on digital attunement and make connections between body memory and our use of said technology.\n\nTiara Roxanne is a Purhépecha (descendant) Mestiza scholar and artist based in Berlin. Dr. Roxanne’s work is dedicated to rethinking the ethics of AI through an anti-colonial and cyberfeminist lens. They are currently developing their terminology\, digital attunement and the technological haunt further\, which expands theory and critique regarding body memory and hauntology within socio-technical frameworks. In the recent past\, they developed protocols of trust and safety online with Indigenous communities based in Central and South America. As a performance artist and practitioner\, they work between the digital and the material using textile\, from the space of the body as a site of refusal.\n\nTiara has presented at Images Festival (Toronto)\, Squeaky Wheel Film and Media Art Center (NY)\, Trinity Square Video (Toronto)\, European Media Art Festival (Osnabrück)\, University of Applied Arts (Vienna)\, SOAS (London)\, SLU (Madrid)\, Transmediale (Berlin)\, Duke University (NC)\, Tech Open Air (Berlin)\, AMOQA (Athens)\, Zurich University of the Arts (Zurich)\, Autonomous Intercultural Indigenous University (Columbia)\, Utrecht University (NL)\, University of California (San Diego)\, Laboratorio Arte Alameda\, (Mexico City)\, Fuchsbau Festival (Hannover) among others.\n\nWe strive to make our events accessible to all participants. This event will be a hybrid event with both a physical meeting space and an online meeting space. Please register in advance for the online Zoom Webinar here: https://bit.ly/3yTjO2r\n\nPlease register for the physical meeting space at the University of Michigan’s Central Campus here: https://myumi.ch/mZGnV\n\nCART will be provided. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:DSI Lecture Series | Digital Technology and Body Memory: Tiara Roxanne in Conversation with Rebecca Uliasz
DESCRIPTION:The use of digital technologies and platformitization have become a more normalized way of connecting which shapes our relations and ultimately\, how we intimise. Where we might mutually recognize a shared togetherness within the digital sphere\, we might also discover a feeling of togetherness\, alienation\, horror or even seduction. I ask questions of how digital intimacy fabricates how our bodies move toward one another\, gather or isolate? We are intimate with the algorithms\, social media platforms and digital infrastructures embedded within the technological which intensify feelings of horror. Is the horror we see and feel via the algorithm and what we share\, a new form of attunement and intimacy\, is it a new body memory?Tiara Roxanne is a Purhépecha (descendant) Mestiza scholar and artist based in Berlin. Dr. Roxanne’s work is dedicated to rethinking the ethics of AI through an anti-colonial and cyberfeminist lens. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Large Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Cavitating Flows
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nCavitation is a complex multi-scale phenomenon that has implications from intense sound production to erosion in engineering applications. This talk will discuss our efforts at developing the large-eddy simulation capability for the simulation of turbulent cavitating flows. LES of cavitation is challenged by phase change modeling\, acoustic stiffness\, sharp multiphase fronts\, strong compressibility effects\, consistent accounting of nuclei\, broadband turbulence and subgrid effects.\n\nLES of partial cavitation will be discussed under the same conditions as experiments in a sharp wedge configuration. Physical mechanisms of cavity transition observed in the experiments\, i.e.\, re-entrant jet and bubbly shock waves\, are both captured in the LES over their respective regimes. Vapor volume fraction data obtained from the LES will be quantitatively compared to X-ray densitometry\, and the results will be discussed. Cavitation nuclei are likely to be introduced through the free-stream as well as at solid surfaces. We will present a novel approach based on Gibbs free energy minimization to predict nuclei concentrations. The results from the proposed work will be applied to account for dissolved gas content in CSM measurements and predict several decades of experimentally observed trends in nuclei concentrations. Cavitating flows possess a range of vapor length scales ranging from tiny vapor bubbles to large vapor pockets. We will discuss a compressible hybrid model to capture both sub-grid vapor nuclei and massive sheet cavity dynamics. Finally\, physical aspects of inception due to the interaction of a counter-rotating vortex pair generated behind a pair of hydrofoils will be presented.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Unlocking Peak Performance in Quantum Sensing via Quantum Control
DESCRIPTION:High-precision measurements play a central role in physics\, whether for testing the fundamental laws\, searching for physics beyond the standard model\, or probing the interplay between general relativity and quantum mechanics. They also lead to practical technological applications for timekeeping\, geodesy\, and quantum-enabled sensors in general. \n\nOne promising avenue to reach higher sensitivities is to use state-of-the-art optimal quantum control techniques. Those techniques allow us to search for the fastest\, the most efficient\, and the most reliable controls to perform operations in quantum systems or even to solve more abstract problems\, such as looking for the operations that generate the optimal probe state for a quantum sensor and even the design of sensing protocols\, thus fully exploiting the potentiality of current and future experimental setups.\n\nIn this talk\, I will discuss our recent advances in quantum control techniques and how these can impact different systems of interest\, in particular\, some exciting new analytical results for two-photon transitions and a general Quantum Control theory to optimize arbitrary computable figures of merit. Those systems of interest that will be discussed include entanglement-enhanced atomic clocks operating with extreme spin squeezed states and Dicke states\, a recently proposed atomic interferometer where all degrees of freedom are fully confined called the Tractor Atomic Interferometer\, and gyroscopes based on nitrogen-vacancy color centers in diamonds. \n\nBio: Sebastián C. Carrasco earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the Universidad de Chile\, Chile\, in 2020. He is a postdoctoral fellow at the Army Research Laboratory in Adelphi\, Maryland. His research specializes in developing and applying quantum control techniques to manipulate and optimize quantum systems\, which are crucial for advancing quantum technologies. At present\, his work is primarily focused on quantum sensing applications.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Colloquium Seminar: On the effective dynamics of Bose-Fermi mixtures
DESCRIPTION:Investigating degenerate mixtures of bosons and fermions is an extremely active area of research in experimental physics for constructing and understanding novel quantum bound states such as those in superconductors\, superfluids\, and supersolids. These ultra-cold Bose-Fermi mixtures are fundamentally different from degenerate gases with only bosons or fermions. They not only show an enriched phase diagram\, but also a fundamental instability due to energetic considerations coming from the Pauli exclusion principle. Inspired by this activity in the physics community\, recently we started exploring the mathematical theory of Bose-Fermi mixtures. One of the main challenges is understanding the physical scales of the system that allow for suitable analysis. We will describe how we overcame this challenge by identifying a novel scaling regime in which the fermion distribution behaves semi-clasically\, but the boson field remains quantum-mechanical. In this regime\, the bosons are much lighter and more numerous than the fermions. The talk is based on joint work with Esteban Cardenas and Joseph Miller.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Illuminating metal ions in the gut microbiota
DESCRIPTION:Essential metal ions like zinc\, copper\, and iron have a broad range of signaling\, stabilizing\, and catalytic functions across all living systems. The gut microbiota typically acquires these metals through the host diet but must be able to adapt to dietary fluctuations. Many studies link changes in available metal nutrients to alterations in bacterial colonization\, pathogen resistance\, and gut microbiota community composition but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Our research program revolves around elucidating fundamental molecular mechanisms by which metals affect the microbiota. This talk will focus on our efforts to develop metal ion biosensors for illuminating metals within complex bacterial communities. We are investigating a series of cofactor-based fluorescent proteins that emit wavelengths ranging from green to the near-infrared and which\, unlike green fluorescent proteins and their variants\, do not rely on oxygen. I will cover how our group is re-engineering these proteins to develop novel sensors for zinc and copper. Application of these sensors to live bacteria and opportunities for their use in gut microbiota models will be discussed. I will also present our progress investigating how metal ions affect growth and cell interactions of the Lactobacillaceae family of bacteria\, which are crucial members of the gut microbiota.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Nam Center Colloquium Series | The Postdevelopmental State: Dilemmas of Economic Democratization in Contemporary South Korea
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/5y5kg\n\nOver the last 25 years\, South Korea has witnessed growing inequality through non-standard employment\, mushrooming real estate prices\, and the growth of its super-conglomerates. That this expansion has taken place amid declining rates of economic growth and turbulent political events marks a departure from Korea’s past recognition as a high growth ‘developmental state.’ This presentation insists that to understand the challenges associated with this transformation what is needed is nothing less than a revision of the very standpoint of developmental state research itself. To do so\, it foregrounds the progressive project of ‘economic democratization’ to shift inquiry from elite bureaucracies and rapid GDP growth to the dynamics of historical blocs and the contours of socio-economic inequality. The lecture examines how despite the embrace of this project by successive liberal administrations\, and appropriation by moderate conservatives\, it has met with frustration. It is aregued that the causes of such can be seen through three interlinked phenomena: a narrowing vision of what constitutes economic democracy\, the ambiguous space accorded to workers within it\, and a problematic ‘politics of personality’ that has been used to pursue legitimacy in lieu of effective alliance-building and substantive policy change.\n \n Dr. Jamie Doucette is Reader in Human Geography at the University of Manchester. His research interests include the geographical political economy of development and democratization in East Asia\, the construction of urban and economic expertise\, labour geographies\, and the politics of special economic zones. His articles have appeared in journals such as Progress in Human Geography\, Urban Geography\, Transactions of the RGS- IBG\, Political Geography\, Journal of Asian Studies\, and Critical Asian Studies\, among others. This talk is based on his recent monograph The Postdevelopmental State: Dilemmas of Economic Democratization in Contemporary South Korea (University of Michigan Press\, 2024). He is the editor\, with Bae-gyoon Park\, of Developmentalist Cities? Interrogating Urban Developmentalism in East Asia (Brill/Haymarket 2019).\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at ncks.info@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Technologies of Sex: Humanizing the Clinical Gaze in Interwar Social Hygiene Films
DESCRIPTION:Sex research in the early-twentieth century German-speaking world was a wide-ranging and interdisciplinary project\, and by the 1920s popular interest in this booming field was facilitated by the exciting technological possibilities of film\, as sex reform activists\, doctors\, feminists and advocacy organizations forged productive alliances with commercial studios. This period saw rapid developments in form and genre\, from the explicitly pedagogical\, anti-STI documentaries of the immediate post-war years to more sensational productions such as the Der Steinach Film (The Steinach Film\, 1922\, Germany\, dir. Thomalla)\, which delves into the latest endocrinological and “rejuvenation” research\, and more narratively driven\, melodramatic Aufklärungsfilme centred on themes of STI transmission\, abortion\, prostitution or homosexuality\, such as Falsche Scham (False Shame\, Germany\, 1925/26\, dir. Biebrach)\, Anders als die Andern (Different from the Others\, 1919\, dir Oswald)\, and Mysterium des Geschlechts (Mystery of sex\, 1933\, dir. Golte). \n\nThis talk presents work-in-progress from a co-authored book project with Birgit Lang (University of Melbourne) on photography and film in early German sexual science. It argues that interwar Aufklärungsfilme were crucial in democratizing interwar sexual science\, depicting doctors as not simply authoritative experts\, but as sympathetic\, accessible and even vulnerable mediators of the latest sex research. They show doctor-scientists taking their lectures and life-lessons out of the traditional clinics and laboratories into spaces such as nightclubs\, funfairs\, and domestic homes\, at times ceding some of their authority to newly recognized social actors such as female medical students or gender-diverse subjects. Film\, queer and affect theorists emphasize how the embodied experience of cinemagoing can foster unique forms of identification and empathy\, from “prosthetic memories” (Landsberg) to “embodied affects” (Rutherford). We examine how these shifts worked to humanize the clinical gaze and gesture towards more emancipatory futures\, even as we also consider ways in which these sources remain ethically troubling for historians of gender and sexuality today.\n\nKatie Sutton is Associate Professor of German and Gender Studies at the Australian National University and a cultural historian of the German-speaking world. Working at the intersection of gender\, sexuality\, medicine and popular culture\, Sutton’s work focuses particularly on queer and trans histories and cultures\, sexual science and psychoanalysis. They are author of Sexuality in Modern German History (Bloomsbury\, 2023)\; Sex between Body and Mind: Psychoanalysis and Sexology in the German-Speaking World\, 1890s-1930s (Michigan UP\, 2019)\; and The Masculine Woman in Weimar Germany (Berghahn\, 2011). Sutton’s research has been supported by the Australian Research Council\, DAAD\, and British Academy/Leverhulme\, including a current collaborative ARC Discovery Project with Professor Birgit Lang at the University of Melbourne on photography and film in early sexual science on which this presentation is based.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:To Stop a Tyrant: How Courageous Political Followers Make a Crucial Difference
DESCRIPTION:In the past twenty years\, the world of leadership studies has been challenged to acknowledge its inseparable counterpart: Followership. Leadership programs now increasingly incorporate followership theory\, practice and development in their curriculum. Our speaker\, Ira Chaleff\, has been in the forefront of this movement with his classic work\, The Courageous Follower: Standing Up To and For Our Leaders. Having spent much of his career in the political sector\, he is now applying the lens of followership to understanding one of humanity’s most intractable phenomenon: the rise of tyrannical political leaders on both the political left and right. \n\nIn his new book\, To Stop a Tyrant\, rather than focus on the leader\, or lament the blight they bring to freedom\, Chaleff walks us through a new way of understanding the power of followers to interrupt the toxic trajectory. In a politically polarized climate\, he brings a refreshing non-partisan voice that invites us to better understand the dynamics of how we can create political leaders that use appropriate power for the public good.\n\nThis event is intended for University of Michigan students\, staff\, faculty\, and alumni.\n\nPre-speaker reception at 4 PM with appetizers.\nHosted with support from our campus partners: CEW+\, Sanger Leadership Center\, and the Ford School Leadership Initiative.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ESG Data Bootcamp
DESCRIPTION:The ESG (Environmental\, Social\, and Governance) Workshop Series is designed to educate and engage students on key sustainability and ethical considerations in business and investment practices. Through a series of interactive sessions\, the workshops will cover a range of topics\, including reporting and regulatory frameworks\, data providers\, and the impact of ESG factors on financial performance and risk management.\n\nNearly all major corporations release ESG reports\, and global ESG (environmental\, social\, governance) assets under management are projected to pass $50 trillion in 2025. Some see ESG data as an essential tool to guide corporations toward positive social impact. Yet the investment strategy has become controversial\, and some states have banned the use of ESG standards for government funds. What is ESG\, how can I get and use ESG data\, and why is a seemingly niche investment strategy suddenly so political?\n\nThis hands-on workshop provides hands-on experience with ESG data to answer three questions: (1) How can I evaluate a specific company’s ESG performance (e.g.\, a potential employer)? (2) How can I assess ESG mutual funds and ETFs that I might invest in? and (3) How can I use ESG data to create a portfolio that matches my values?\n\nThis event\, facilitated by Professor Jerry Davis\, is open to all students.
