SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\n*The exhibition is cosponsored by the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Steve Glazer Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Steve Glazer earned his BFA in art with a concentration in ceramics from Eastern Michigan University\, a master’s degree in art from Central Michigan University\, and MFA in fine arts and ceramics from Indiana State University. Since 2004\, Glazer has been lead faculty and head of ceramics at Henry Ford College\, and former faculty of Concord College (WV) and North Dakota State University. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the country.\n\nThroughout his adult life the art of Steve Glazer has been done as a response to his environment. From a series of shadow box type pieces containing life like ceramic fish while teaching at a Catholic woman’s college\, to building 8’ tall ceramic “skyscrapers” that barely fit into the display spaces while teaching in North Dakota\, where no skyscrapers exist\, and then creating installations commenting on living in Appalachia while teaching in southern West Virginia. After returning home to Detroit\, Glazer began his griot series\, the “Motor City Griot Society” masks\, the faces of the superheroes that will save Detroit\, and more recently the “Motor City Griot Patrol” creatures that will protect the city of Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Susan Moran Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Susan Moran’s work is inspired by the natural world and our place in it. She collects and arranges images\, builds and subtracts\, and uses processes that suit the concepts and gives the pieces a reason for existing as textiles. Simultaneously she strives to make the medium influence the outcome in such a way that cloth and image meld together. Moran uses silkscreen\, shibori\, and stitching to embed images from her daily walks into the fabric. it's important that the work builds slowly\, involving meditative processes that connect her to the cloth and the source of the design.\n\nGallery hours: Monday-Friday\, 9 am to 5pm or by appointment serrag@med.umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Butch Closet
DESCRIPTION:In the multi-media installation *The Butch Closet*\, artist Phranc illustrates her life stories as a queer artist\, Jewish lesbian folk singer\, and \"cardboard cobbler.\" By meticulously re-creating personal objects and pieces of clothing out of paper\, cardboard\, thread\, and paint\, she revisits her own history\, contextualizing her experiences as an iconic performer\, and maker\, constructing\, reconstructing\, and re-imagining her image against a larger historical context of second-wave feminism and queer activism. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet* is the second iteration of the project\, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works. As part of the installation\, visitors can peer into a closet built in the center of the gallery designed by the artist. Conceptually\, the space shifts from inside to outside\, public and private\, and explores themes of visibility and that which remains inaccessible or unseen.\n\nAbout the artist:\nPhranc is a jewish lesbian folksinger and queer artist who uses song\, painting and sculpture to champion personal identities and illustrate the struggle\, survival\, and victory of the queer individual. An internationally acclaimed and award winning performer. Phranc’s work integrates humor and a butch lesbian aesthetic. Her current project\, Phranc Talk: The Butch Closet\, is a multi-media memoir that spans her 40-year career. Phranc lives and works in Santa Monica\, California and Vancouver\, British Columbia.\n\n*Phranc is the 2024 Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.*

This chat will have a limit of five students\, so for consideration please RSVP by September 28. If you have any questions please email Miriam Rubio at rmiriam@umich.edu. You will receive an email prior to the event with details and more information.Diana Troik's bio:When Diana Troik finished her doctorate in history at Michigan in 1972\, the job market had disappeared. With a doctoral degree in her pocket\, Diana realized she had many cross-over skills. She took a position as a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) in accounting and finance. Her experience at UCLA ultimately led to a job at Loyola Marymount University as an assistant professor of accounting and later as associate professor she also taught in the MBA program.\nEventually she linked her two fields by doing research in accounting history\, starting that process at a time when accountants were realizing that accounting had a past. She remained in that role for over a decade and in the meantime\, with a partner\, started a small consulting firm on the side. At her management consulting firm she focused her efforts on strategic planning\, organizational assessment\, executive coaching\, and the administration of her own firm\, retiring in 2009. It was demanding but very fascinating work\, she says.\nIn her retirement\, Diana remains in pursuit of scholarly achievement. She takes courses at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at California State University Channel Islands. She also uses her consulting skills to help develop the Osher Institute by serving on the steering committee of that organization.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Kelly Church & Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: September 13 – December 7\, 2024Opening Reception: September 19\, 2024\n\nKelly Church &amp\; Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue is a major exhibition that centers the subjectivities of two contemporary Indigenous artists whose practices have sustained and bolstered the relevance of the age-old Anishinaabe practice of black ash basket-making in the 21st century. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter\, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors)\, young folx\, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories\, as well as those of survivance and resilience\, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps\, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA\, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing\, thinking\, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus\, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women’s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers\, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on\, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole\, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works\, including 15-17 new works. Together\, the exhibition offers an incisive critique of the colonial\, racist paradigm of systemic erasure and assimilation that continues to this day\, with the ongoing crises of missing and murdered Indigenous women\, culture wars\, and climate change that threaten Indigenous ways of living\, sustenance\, and making. \nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra with Curatorial Assistant Zoi Crampton.\nStamps Gallery is grateful to Michigan Humanities and U-M Arts Initiative for generously supporting the exhibition and programs.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag Seminar | Fortuity and Chaos of BPS states
DESCRIPTION:It was recently suggested that holographic BPS states can be divided into two categories: monotone and fortuitous. Various pieces of evidence suggest that monotone states correspond to horizonless microstate geometries\, while fortuitous states are dual to supersymmetric black holes. In this talk\, I will connect this classification to the fine-grained features of BPS states using concepts from quantum chaos. In concrete models such as the N=4 SYM theory\, explicit calculations demonstrate that monotone states are only weakly chaotic\, whereas fortuitous states can exhibit strong chaos due to an “invasion” mechanism. I propose using the N=2 SUSY SYK model as a toy model to explore many of these ideas.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:JPSM MPSDS Seminar Series - Motivated Reasoning under Conditions of Affective Political Polarization
DESCRIPTION:JPSM MPSDS Seminar Series \n\nOnsite and via Zoom\nInstitute for Social Research (ISR)\, Room 1070\n\nMotivated Reasoning under Conditions of Affective Political Polarization\n\nMotivated Reasoning under Conditions of Affective Political Polarization Public opinion\, especially as expressed through polls\, is a central concept underlying democratic theory and the process of representation. This research raises the question of how this relationship works under conditions when public confidence in poll results becomes situational. Individuals sometimes use motivated reasoning when encountering new information\, evaluating it in relation to their prior beliefs and attitudes. On some occasions they counter argue or devalue the new information if it does not agree with their priors. In a series of two pre-registered survey-based experiments\, respondent subjects evaluated simulated poll results showing that a majority of Americans agreed or disagreed with a position they hold on one of two different issues. For each issue\, their assessed credibility of the poll was lower when it suggested that the majority held a view contrary to their own\, a demonstration of motivated reasoning. For one issue\, this relationship was reinforced among more polarized respondents and for conservatives compared to Liberals and for Republicans compared to Democrats but not for the other issue\, raising a question about whether the impact of affective political polarization could be issue specific in this context. In a second set of experiments\, the same results were reproduced – an effect of affective political polarization for one issue but not for the same issue as in the first experiment. Avenues for further research are discussed.\n\nProfessor Michael W. Traugott studies the mass media and their impact on American politics. This includes research on the use of the media by candidates in their campaigns and its impact on voters\, as well as the ways that campaigns are covered and the impact of this coverage on candidates. He has a particular interest in the use of surveys and polls and the way news organizations employ them to cover campaigns and elections

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Cooking\, Fishing and Jogging through Phase Space: A Practical Guide to Discovering and Understanding New Materials
DESCRIPTION:The design\, discovery\, characterization and control of novel materials is perhaps the most important research area for humanity as it moves into the 21rst century. A myriad of societal problems concerning energy\, clean water and air\, and medicine all need to be solved by the discovery of new compounds with dramatically improved\, or even new\, properties. The search for such materials requires a blending of skills and mindsets that\, traditionally\, have been segregated into different academic disciplines: physics\, chemistry\, metallurgy\, materials science. In this colloquium I will outline the basic philosophy and techniques that we use to search for novel materials. These include a combination of intuition\, experience\, compulsive optimism and a desire to share discovery.[1]\n\nIn the second half of the lecture\, the specific case of superconductivity will be used as an example of one such search. Over the past couple of decades a growing sense of where and even how to search for new superconductors has been developing\, with the recent discoveries of MgB2 and the FeAs based materials providing\, at least for me\, clear guidance. [2] Stories will be told\, jokes will be cracked\, slow burn puns will be deployed. Any resemblances to persons living or dead is coincidental.\n\n[1] Paul C. Canfield\, Rep. Prog. Phys. 83 [2020] 016501.\n[2] Paul C. Canfield\, Nature Materials 10 [2011] 259.\n\nBio:\nDr. Paul C. Canfield is a Distinguished Professor of Physics and Astronomy and holds the Robert Allen Wright Endowed Chair in Physics at Iowa State University\; he is a Senior Scientist in Ames National Laboratory. Over the past thirty years his research group has made over 10\,000 growths of novel materials. His group has discovered new examples of superconducting\, antiferromagnetic\, ferromagnetic\, topological\, quantum critical\, and strongly correlated materials and has used both pressure and chemical substitution to finely tune systems and ground states.\n\nDr. Canfield has won numerous awards including: the 2011 DOE Lawrence Award\, the 2014 American Physical Society\, David Adler Lectureship Award in the Field of Material Physics\, a 2015 Humboldt Research Award\, and the 2017 American Physical Society\, James C. McGroddy Prize for New Materials. He was elected a fellow of the American Physical Society in 2001\, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2020 and a fellow of American Association for Advancement of Science in 2023.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:International Students Career Series: How to Navigate Small Talk
DESCRIPTION:In the United States\, many people participate in what is called \"small talk\"\, where you make conversation with strangers or acquaintances about non-controversial topics\, such as the weather\, sports\, or popular television shows. “Small talk” is one of the ways in American culture to chat about harmless topics in order to establish a connection and start to build a friendship. For example\, while waiting for an interview\, in line at a M-Den\, or in an elevator on campus\, don’t be startled if a stranger says something to you like\, “Did you watch the Football Game last night? What a game!” They might also make a joke aboutthe long line you’re both in\, or comment on the current situation. If you are interested in learning more about \"small talk\"\, now it’syour chance to sign up for this workshop on how to navigate small talk asan international student. In this workshop\, we will educate you on what is small talk and you will also have the chance to practice small talk with Peers!

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Networked Bollywood: How Star Power Globalized Hindi Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Panelists:\n- Swapnil Rai\, Assistant Professor\, Film\, Television\, and Media \n- Clare Croft\, Associate Professor\, American Culture\, Women's and Gender Studies\, and Music\, and Director of Arts Research/Creative Practice\n- Madhumita Lahiri\, Associate Professor\, English\, and Film\, Television\, and Media\n\nDescription:\nIn her new book\, \"Networked Bollywood\" (Cambridge University Press\, 2024)\, Swapnil Rai provides an interdisciplinary analysis of the role of the stars in the transformation of Hindi cinema into a global entertainment industry. The first Indian film was made in 1913. However\, filmmaking was recognized as an industry almost a hundred years later. Yet\, Indian films have been circulating globally since their inception. This book unearths this oft-elided history of Bollywood's globalization through multilingual\, transnational research and discursive cultural analysis. Over the decades\, a handful of primarily male megastars\, as the heads of the industry's most prominent productions and corporations\, combined overwhelming charismatic affect with unparalleled business influence. Through their “star switching power\,” theorized here as a deeply gendered phenomenon and manifesting broader social inequalities\, India's most prominent stars instigated new flows of cinema\, industrial collaborations\, structured distinctive business models\, influenced state policy and diplomatic exchange\, thereby defining the future of Bollywood's globalization.\n\nThis event is part of IRWG’s Gender: New Works\, New Questions series\, which spotlights new books by our faculty.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Number Theory:Shalika germs
DESCRIPTION:A basic object of study in the invariant harmonic analysis on a reductive p-adic group are the orbital integrals associated to the regular semisimple elements in its Lie algebra. There are many such orbital integrals\, however the study of these infinitely many integrals can be in a sense reduced to studying a finite amount of data: the finite collection of nilpotent orbital integrals and their associated Shalika germs. We explain how this works and if time permits we give some applications of the theory.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:“For Us the Deserts are Buzzling Cities:” Early Soviet Yerevan between Armenian Futurism and Post-Persian Retrotopia
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Few architects of the 20th century have left as indelible a mark as the neoclassical architect Alexander Tamanyan did in Yerevan. From the late Soviet Cascade to the post-Soviet megaproject Northern Avenue\, his legacy has continued to serve as a point of reference.\n Roaming through scattered experimental buildings\, blueprints hidden in private archives\, and surrealist fiction suppressed by Soviet censors\, the talk seeks to reconstruct from the debris of history an alternative pathway to imagining the Soviet city. Contesting Tamanyan's Eurocentric vision of the city\, the talk recounts the story of those who were torn between anticipation for a communist future and a longing for the city's Persian heritage – which was being razed before their eyes.\n \n Bio: Dr. David Leupold is a research fellow at Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient Berlin and principal investigator of the research project “Relicts of the Future? Life and Afterlife of the Socialist City in Central Asia and the Southern Caucasus” funded by the German Research Association (DFG). Leupold was a 2018-2019 Manoogian Postdoctoral Fellow in the University of Michigan Department of Sociology and holds a doctoral degree from the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.\n \n His research interests comprise contested geographies and the collective imaginations of past\, present and future in the post-Ottoman and post-Soviet space. His first monograph Embattled Dreamlands: At the Nexus of Armenian\, Kurdish and Turkish Memory Politics (New York: Routledge\, 2020) was awarded the 2021 annual book prize of the Central Eurasian Studies Society (CESS).\n \n Suggested Pre-Read:\n ‘Building the Internationalist City from Below’: The Role of the Czechoslovak Industrial Cooperative “Interhelpo” in Forging Urbanity in early-Soviet Bishkek published online by Cambridge University Press: 23 November 2020. https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/international-labor-and-working-class-history/article/abs/building-the-internationalist-city-from-below-the-role-of-the-czechoslovak-industrial-cooperative-interhelpo-in-forging-urbanity-in-earlysoviet-bishkek/95F8127EF91216614230D5B5B47E9FB5\n \n Cosponsors:\n Multidisciplinary Workshop for Armenian Studies\, U-M\n UCLA PromiseArmenian Institute\n UC Berkeley Armenian Studies Program\n\nRegister here: https://umich.zoom.us/j/91032993178

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic Geometry Seminar: A conjectural formula for the top Chern class of the Hodge bundle
DESCRIPTION:Let A_g be the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension g. The Hodge bundle is a rank g vector bundle on A_g given by pulling back the relative cotangent bundle of the universal family along the zero section. The top Chern class of the Hodge bundle on A_g vanishes. However\, when the Hodge bundle is extended to a compactification of A_g\, this top Chern class stops vanishing. I will present a conjectural formula for this top Chern class on the second Voronoi compactification of A_g. The formula is expressed as a piecewise polynomial on the dual cone complex\, the moduli space of tropical principally polarized abelian varieties.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Existence of Optimal Stationary Singular Controls and MFG Equilibria
DESCRIPTION:We examine the stationary relaxed singular control problem within a multi-dimensional framework for a single agent\, as well as its Mean Field Game (MFG) equivalent. We demonstrate that optimal relaxed controls exist for both maximization and minimization cases. These relaxed controls are defined by random measures across the state and control spaces\, with the state process described as a solution to the associated martingale problem. By leveraging findings from \cite{kur-sto}\, we establish the equivalence between the martingale problem and the stationary forward equation. This allows us to reformulate the relaxed control problem into a linear programming problem within the measure space. We prove the sequential compactness of these measures\, thereby confirming the feasibility of achieving an optimal solution. Subsequently\, our focus shifts to Mean Field Games. Drawing on insights from the single-agent problem and employing Kakutani--Glicksberg--Fan fixed point theorem\, we derive the existence of a mean field game equilibria.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Quasi-isometry types of graphs of arcs and curves
DESCRIPTION:We introduce various graphs whose vertices correspond to (possibly marked) arc and curve systems on a compact surface\, and their applications in the study of finite-type surface mapping class groups. Examples will include: the curve graph\, the arc graph\, the pants graph\, and the marking graph. We will discuss the quasi-isometry types of such graphs\, and a theorem classifying their (equivariant) quasi-isometry types by the set of subsurfaces intersecting every vertex. If time permits\, we will also describe their hierarchically hyperbolic structure.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student ML Seminar: Lightning Talks on Attention-based Architectures\, Diffusion Models and State Space Models
DESCRIPTION:The event will be divided into 3 lightning talks with the following abstracts.\n\nAttention-based Architectures: We will quickly discuss the basic architecture of transformers and intuitions behind some of its components. As time permits\, we will also look through Andrej Karpathy’s “build-nanogpt” repository to precisely understand some implementation details. \n\nDiffusion Models: Diffusion models\, in essence\, work by learning to denoise data that had been noised with a prescribed forward process. While much work has been done on different mathematical formulations of the process\, the architectural part that actually does the learning is often divorced from the former and relegated to a footnote in the articles. In this lightning talk\, I will illustrate the development and workings of the main backbone architectures used in diffusion models\, from the ubiquitous U-Net to approaches utilizing Transformers.\n\nState Space Models: Much recent excitement has centered on sequential data modeling\, which has been recently dominated by the popular Transformer architecture. Transformers\, however\, suffer from a quadratic memory requirement in sequence length\, limiting its use for the ever-increasing context window demands. State-space models (SSMs)\, in particular Mamba\, have arisen as a potential replacement for Transformers\, having linear memory scaling and comparable predictive performance. In this talk\, we discuss the fundamentals of SSMs from the perspective of linear dynamical systems and the core of the Mamba architecture.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Weekly DCMB / CCMB Seminar featuring Jian Ma\, PhD (Carnegie Mellon University)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Despite significant advancements in high-throughput data acquisition in genomics and cell biology\, our understanding of the diverse cell types within the human body remains limited. In particular\, the principles governing intracellular molecular spatial organization and interaction\, as well as cellular spatial organization within complex tissues\, are still largely unclear. A major challenge lies in developing computational methods capable of integrating heterogeneous and multiscale molecular\, cellular\, and tissue information. In this talk\, I will discuss our recent work on creating integrative approaches to advance single-cell epigenomics. These methods hold the potential to reveal new insights into fundamental genome structure\, gene regulation\, and cellular function within complex tissues\, across a wide range of biological contexts in both health and disease.\n\nBio: Jian Ma is the Ray and Stephanie Lane Professor of Computational Biology in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. His lab develops advanced AI/ML methods to explore the structural and functional complexity of the human genome and cellular organization. His work tackles key computational challenges with broad implications for human health and disease. He serves as the Contact PI of a Center grant in the NIH 4D Nucleome Program and Co-Chair of its Steering Committee. His recent work has been supported by the NIH\, NSF\, CZI\, Google\, and the Mark Foundation. He has received several awards\, including an NSF CAREER Award and a Guggenheim Fellowship (in Computer Science)\, and is an elected Fellow of AAAS.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Please join Professor Coleman\, along with poets Nandi Comer\, Marwa Helal\, and Jonah-Mixon-Webster\, for the launch of his translation of Nicolás Guillén's book The Great Zoo. \n\nThe book is a fantastical collection of poems by revolutionary Afro-Cuban poet Nicolás Guillén presented in a Spanish-English bilingual edition. Born in Cuba to parents of African and European ancestry\, Nicolás Guillén worked in printing presses and studied law before moving into Havana’s literary scene. A virtuosic maker and breaker of forms\, Guillén rose to fame by transforming a popular form of Cuban music into poetry that called attention to the experience of Afro-Cuban people\, and he continued to interweave his artistic and political commitments as he traveled the world.\n \nOriginally published in Spanish in 1967\, The Great Zoo is a humorous and biting collection of poems that presents a fantastical bestiary of ideas\, social concerns\, landscapes\, phenomena\, and more. The “animals” on view in this menagerie include the Mississippi and Amazon Rivers\, clouds from different countries\, a singing guitar\, a temperamental atomic bomb\, blue-pelted police\, a hurricane\, the KKK\, and the North Star\, among many others. Translated by Aaron Coleman with a keen understanding of the contexts of colonial racialization\, oppression\, and exoticism\, this bilingual edition stands as a testament to Guillén’s carnivalesque vision.\n\nAaron Coleman is an assistant professor of English and comparative literature in the Helen Zell Writers’s Program at the University of Michigan. He is the author of the poetry collection Threat Come Close\, winner of the Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award\, and the chapbook St. Trigger\, selected for the Button Poetry Chapbook Prize. Coleman has received fellowships from the NEA\, Fulbright Program\, Cave Canem Foundation\, and American Literary Translators Association. His poems and essays have appeared in publications including the New York Times\, Boston Review\, and Callaloo.

SUMMARY:Performance:Shawn Mullins
DESCRIPTION:After a series of indie releases and growing buzz in the Atlanta music scene\, Shawn Mullins’ critical and commercial breakthrough came when 1998 Soul’s Core shot him to fame on the strength of Grammy-nominated No. 1 hit\, “Lullaby” followed by AAA/Americana No. 1 hit “Beautiful Wreck” from 2006’s 9th Ward Pickin’ Parlor. His song\, “Shimmer” was used in promotion of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and was included on the Dawson’s Creek soundtrack. His co-write “All in My Head” from 2008’s Honeydew was featured in episode one of the hit TV sitcom “Scrubs.” Mullins also co-wrote the Zac Brown Band’s No. 1 country tune “Toes.” In early 2002\, he formed supergroup The Thorns with Matthew Sweet and Pete Droge. “No Blue Sky” from the resulting album\, is a modern day classic. \n\nFor the 20th anniversary of his breakthrough album\, Shawn revisited the music of Soul’s Core by recording two new versions of the album. He calls this Soul’s Core Revival. This is not a remix or a remaster of the original\, but rather brand new recordings with new arrangements of the songs – one album is stripped down solo performances\, some on guitar\, some on piano and maybe one a cappella and the second is a new studio recording with his full band\, Soul Carnival.\n \nhttps://shawnmullins.com/
