SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Distribution of Power: Decentralization and Favoritism in Energy Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:Electrification is central to green growth. However\, state-owned utilities dominate the electricity sector in many countries\, risking political capture and distorted investments. This paper studies nationwide electrification in Kenya\, where major democratization and decentralization reforms have advanced political accountability. Pro-government areas received 46% more electrified villages and 35% more household connections than determined by the official non-partisan\, pre-existing formula guiding program implementation. Favoritism was driven by national rather than local officials. Despite the success of decentralization in some sectors\, central coordination and economies of scale may still expose energy infrastructure to political capture.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Steve Glazer Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Steve Glazer earned his BFA in art with a concentration in ceramics from Eastern Michigan University\, a master’s degree in art from Central Michigan University\, and MFA in fine arts and ceramics from Indiana State University. Since 2004\, Glazer has been lead faculty and head of ceramics at Henry Ford College\, and former faculty of Concord College (WV) and North Dakota State University. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the country.\n\nThroughout his adult life the art of Steve Glazer has been done as a response to his environment. From a series of shadow box type pieces containing life like ceramic fish while teaching at a Catholic woman’s college\, to building 8’ tall ceramic “skyscrapers” that barely fit into the display spaces while teaching in North Dakota\, where no skyscrapers exist\, and then creating installations commenting on living in Appalachia while teaching in southern West Virginia. After returning home to Detroit\, Glazer began his griot series\, the “Motor City Griot Society” masks\, the faces of the superheroes that will save Detroit\, and more recently the “Motor City Griot Patrol” creatures that will protect the city of Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Susan Moran Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Susan Moran’s work is inspired by the natural world and our place in it. She collects and arranges images\, builds and subtracts\, and uses processes that suit the concepts and gives the pieces a reason for existing as textiles. Simultaneously she strives to make the medium influence the outcome in such a way that cloth and image meld together. Moran uses silkscreen\, shibori\, and stitching to embed images from her daily walks into the fabric. it's important that the work builds slowly\, involving meditative processes that connect her to the cloth and the source of the design.\n\nGallery hours: Monday-Friday\, 9 am to 5pm or by appointment serrag@med.umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Butch Closet
DESCRIPTION:In the multi-media installation *The Butch Closet*\, artist Phranc illustrates her life stories as a queer artist\, Jewish lesbian folk singer\, and \"cardboard cobbler.\" By meticulously re-creating personal objects and pieces of clothing out of paper\, cardboard\, thread\, and paint\, she revisits her own history\, contextualizing her experiences as an iconic performer\, and maker\, constructing\, reconstructing\, and re-imagining her image against a larger historical context of second-wave feminism and queer activism. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet* is the second iteration of the project\, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works. As part of the installation\, visitors can peer into a closet built in the center of the gallery designed by the artist. Conceptually\, the space shifts from inside to outside\, public and private\, and explores themes of visibility and that which remains inaccessible or unseen.\n\nAbout the artist:\nPhranc is a jewish lesbian folksinger and queer artist who uses song\, painting and sculpture to champion personal identities and illustrate the struggle\, survival\, and victory of the queer individual. An internationally acclaimed and award winning performer. Phranc’s work integrates humor and a butch lesbian aesthetic. Her current project\, Phranc Talk: The Butch Closet\, is a multi-media memoir that spans her 40-year career. Phranc lives and works in Santa Monica\, California and Vancouver\, British Columbia.\n\n*Phranc is the 2024 Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.*

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Kelly Church & Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: September 13 – December 7\, 2024Opening Reception: September 19\, 2024\n\nKelly Church &amp\; Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue is a major exhibition that centers the subjectivities of two contemporary Indigenous artists whose practices have sustained and bolstered the relevance of the age-old Anishinaabe practice of black ash basket-making in the 21st century. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter\, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors)\, young folx\, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories\, as well as those of survivance and resilience\, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps\, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA\, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing\, thinking\, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus\, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women’s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers\, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on\, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole\, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works\, including 15-17 new works. Together\, the exhibition offers an incisive critique of the colonial\, racist paradigm of systemic erasure and assimilation that continues to this day\, with the ongoing crises of missing and murdered Indigenous women\, culture wars\, and climate change that threaten Indigenous ways of living\, sustenance\, and making. \nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra with Curatorial Assistant Zoi Crampton.\nStamps Gallery is grateful to Michigan Humanities and U-M Arts Initiative for generously supporting the exhibition and programs.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ChE SEMINAR: Aditya Bhan\, University of Minnesota
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: C1 molecules\, typified by abundant methane and carbon dioxide\, are destined to serve as carbon sources for energy carriers and chemicals as we transition to a low-carbon future. We illustrate the kinetic and thermodynamic challenges in directing catalytic routes for the conversion of these critical feedstocks to products of higher value in the context of two case studies.\nStrong\, apolar C-H bonds in methane confer significant thermodynamic barriers for non-oxidative conversion of methane to aromatics. Medium pore MFI zeolites modified by well-dispersed carbidic molybdenum aggregates (MoCx/ZSM-5) reduce kinetic barriers to methane pyrolysis and catalyze dehydroaromatization (DHA) reactions with high benzene (≳ 70%) and aromatic (≳ 95%) selectivity at conversions near the ~10% equilibrium limit at ~950 K. We combine learnings from thermodynamics\, reaction kinetics\, and mass transport to clarify mechanistic observations and ascertain the identity of molecular events\, species\, and catalytic moieties that determine the activity of benchmark DHA catalysts. In doing so\, we illustrate the significance of dispersive hydrogen transport at catalyst-bed length scales during DHA catalysis\, and we leverage this understanding to develop polyfunctional catalytic formulations that alleviate thermodynamic constraints on maximum single-pass conversion in DHA catalysis.\nWe resolve persistent mechanistic questions regarding the selectivity to methanol and CO in competing CO2 hydrogenation pathways\, the reaction intermediates involved\, and the evolution in structure and function of commercial Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst using the general conceptual framework for analyzing rates and reversibility of catalytic reaction sequences. These kinetic analyses provide thermodynamic constraints precluding sequential reverse water gas shift and CO hydrogenation as the pathway for methanol generation\, reveal hydrogen and water as species salient in determining methanol selectivity and yield by impacting both the forward and reverse rates of CO2 hydrogenation on Cu/ZnO/Al2O3\, and illustrate that catalysis occurs on H*- and HCOOH**-saturated surfaces where methanol synthesis proceeds through a formate pathway with rate-determining steps that are dependent on water partial pressures while RWGS proceeds through a carboxylate pathway with one rate-determining step.\n\nSpeaker Bio: Aditya Bhan received his Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech.) in Chemical Engineering from IIT Kanpur in 2000 and his PhD in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University in 2005. From January 2005 to August 2007\, he was a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California at Berkeley and since then he has been on the Chemical Engineering and Materials Science faculty at the University of Minnesota where he currently serves as a Distinguished McKnight University Professor. He leads a research group focused on mechanistic characterization of catalysts useful in energy conversion and petrochemical synthesis. His group at the University of Minnesota has been recognized with the Paul H. Emmett Award in Fundamental Catalysis by the North American Catalysis Society\, the Young Researcher Award from the Acid-Base Catalysis Society\, the Ipatieff Prize from the American Chemical Society\, and the NSF and DOE early career awards. He serves as Editor for Journal of Catalysis and has served as Chair of the ACS Catalysis Science & Technology Division.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Asymptotic dimension of graphs of arcs and curves on infinite-type surfaces
DESCRIPTION:In analogy to the curve complex and its role in the geometry of mapping class groups of finite-type surfaces\, a number of authors have defined graphs whose vertices are arcs or curves on a given infinite-type surface S\, and on which the mapping class group Mod(S) acts by isometries. We show that for a broad class of such graphs\, including the grand arc graph\, the omnipresent arc graph\, and all others defined comparably to Masur-Minsky\, the asymptotic dimension is infinite. In particular\, if one could construct a graph in this class admitting a Švarc-Milnor-type action of Mod(S)\, then Mod(S) would have infinite asymptotic dimension.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar Series - Understanding the ecology of microbiome-plant interactions from genes to communities
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our ongoing Thursday Seminar Series.\n\nAbout this seminar: The Afkhami Lab investigates the ecology of microbe-microbe and plant-microbiome interactions at scales ranging from genes to ecosystems. This talk highlights three areas central to understanding plant-microbial interactions that have been the focus of recent research efforts. Specifically\, the talk will address (1) conceptual and empirical advancements in understanding the ecological\, evolutionary\, and molecular consequences of multispecies microbial mutualisms\, (2) how microbial landscapes scale up to impact plant distributions\, and (3) how stress\, especially from anthropogenic sources\, affects the ecology of microbiomes and microbe-mediated plant responses.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IOE 899: Probing Enhanced Stochastic Programming
DESCRIPTION:About the speaker: Jeff Linderoth is the Harvey D. Spangler Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, and he served as the department's chairperson from 2016 to 2021. Prof. Linderoth holds a courtesy appointment in the Computer Sciences department and as a Discovery Fellow at the Wisconsin Institutes of Discovery. Dr. Linderoth received his Ph.D. degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1998. He was previously employed in the Mathematics and Computer Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory\, with the optimization-based financial products firm of Axioma\, and as an Assistant Professor at Lehigh University. His awards include multiple best paper awards\, an Early Career Award from the Department of Energy\, the SIAM Activity Group on Optimization Prize\, and the INFORMS Computing Society (ICS) Prize. In 2016\, he was elected to membership as an INFORMS Fellow. Dr. Linderoth was once stranded in Marseille with Jon Lee for five days.\n\nAbstract: We consider a two-stage stochastic decision problem where the decision-maker has the opportunity to obtain information about the distribution of the random variables X through a set of discrete actions that we refer to as probing. Specifically\, probing allows the decision-maker to observe components of a random vector Y that is jointly distributed with X. We propose a three-stage optimization model for this problem\, wherein the first-stage variables select components of Y to observe\, and decisions in subsequent stages must be consistent with the obtained information. In the case that X and Y have finite support\, Goel and Grossmann gave a mixed-integer programming formulation of this problem whose size is proportional to the square of cardinality of the sample space of the random variables. We propose to solve the model using bounds obtained from an information-based relaxation\, combined with a branching scheme that enforces the consistency of decisions with observed information. The branch-and-bound approach can naturally be combined with sampling in order to estimate both lower and upper bounds on the optimal solution value. We demonstrate the scalability of our approach against the exact MIP formulation on instances of a stochastic facility location problem.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nDiversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion (DEI) considerations continue to hold an important place in higher education. DEI is particularly necessary for cultivating the next generation of engineers who are representative of the communities that they serve\, assuring that young engineers can achieve success\, regardless of their backgrounds\, and nurturing students throughout their academic journeys. Biomedical engineering design is well-suited to the purposeful integration of DEI because it is human-centric\, emphasizing people's specific needs and creating solutions that may lead to equitable outcomes. In this talk\, I will share efforts that colleagues and I have undertaken to intentionally incorporate DEI into the biomedical engineering design process\, specifically exploring DEI in students' design efforts. From needs finding through prototyping and implementation\, I will show how DEI can be\, and has been\, constructively integrated into biodesign. By sharing this model\, I strive to demystify and de-stigmatize these approaches\, demonstrating the value of including DEI in design education.\n\nBio:\nAaron Kyle is a Professor of the Practice in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Duke University. His faculty role focuses on teaching undergraduates with an emphasis on hands-on\, inquiry-based learning. Kyle teaches first year design\, medical device instrumentation\, and capstone design courses at Duke. In addition to working with undergraduates\, Kyle is passionate about engendering engineering identity in Grades 6 – 12 students\, particularly in students from underrepresented minority groups or disadvantaged backgrounds. He co-founded and leads the Outreach Design Education (ODE) Program\, an NIH-funded set of activities that revolve around enhancing STEM identity in younger students through engineering design education. As a result of ODE\, over 1000 students in New York and North Carolina have been introduced to engineering design through ODE-associated pre-college programs and courses.\n\nZoom:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/94337625486\n\nQuestions?\nContact Lauren Yanakeff\, yanakeff@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Department of Astronomy 2024-2025 Colloquium Series Presents:
DESCRIPTION:\"Constraining cosmic history and cosmic-ray physics with radio emission\"\n\nThe peak in the cosmic star formation rate density—at z ~ 2—also marks the peak of dust attenuation\, making the full census of star formation activity at short wavelengths a measurement fraught with uncertainty. Fortunately\, radio emission from normal galaxies—free-free emission of massive stars\, and synchrotron emission of relativistic electrons shocked in the supernovae remnants of massive stars—is entirely unaffected by dust. It is only now that our telescopes have the sensitivity to constrain the star formation activity of populations of normal galaxies like our Milky Way over nearly all cosmic time. My results reveal a discrepancy between measurements of the SFRD at UV+IR wavelengths and at radio frequencies\, indicating we may be missing over half of the total star formation\, even at redshifts as low as z ~ 0.5. In this talk\, I will review ongoing and future plans to reveal the source(s) of this discrepancy. I will also present recent work on how radio emission from a nearby galaxy is illuminating the roles of cosmic-rays and magnetic fields in the enrichment of the ISM and CGM.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Rep Stability/Comm Alg Seminar: Strength and algebraic closure over Q
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Strength is a fundamental invariant for forms (homogeneous polynomials) of fixed degree in many variables\, with both geometric and arithmetic applications. Over algebraically closed fields\, forms of high strength have various desirable geometric properties. In arithmetic applications (non-closed fields)\, it's therefore of considerable interest to bound the strength of a polynomial in terms of its strength over the algebraic closure. We will present a linear bound over Q\, proving a special case of a conjecture of Adiprasito\, Kazhdan and Ziegler. In the course of the proof\, we obtain a stronger result on rational solutions to systems of multi-linear equations\, which may be of independent interest.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Simulating Chemistry on Bosonic Quantum Devices
DESCRIPTION:Bosonic quantum devices offer a novel approach to realize quantum computations\, where the quantum two-level system (qubit) is replaced with the quantum (an)harmonic oscillator (qumode) as the fundamental building block of the quantum simulator. The simulation of chemical structure and dynamics can then be achieved by representing or mapping the system Hamiltonians in terms of bosonic operators. In this talk\, we review recent progress and future potential of using bosonic quantum devices for addressing a wide range of challenging chemical problems\, including the calculation of molecular vibronic spectra\, the simulation of gas-phase and solution-phase adiabatic and nonadiabatic chemical dynamics\, the efficient solution of molecular graph theory problems\, and the calculations of electronic structure.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Penny Stamps Speaker Series - Liz Collins
DESCRIPTION:Liz Collins is well-known for pushing the boundaries of art and design in innovative and experimental work in fabric\, yarn\, and other materials and techniques associated with textile media. Although Collins embraces a language of abstraction\, bold colors\, patterns\, and symbols allude to queer and feminist references\, sourcing further inspiration from interpersonal and environmental forces such as electricity\, volatility\, connectivity\, and energy exchange. Whether in the form of textile\, painting\, drawing\, or installation\, Collins frequently explores the dichotomy of structure and entropy—qualities inherent to textile that speak to the fissures present in broader architectural\, political\, and social structures. \n\nCollins’s current and forthcoming exhibitions include the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia\, Foreigners Everywhere\, curated by Adriano Pedrosa\, and Woven Histories: Textiles and Modern Abstraction\, curated by Lynne Cooke\, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, Los Angeles\, CA\; the National Gallery of Art\, Washington\, DC\; the National Gallery of Canada\, Ottawa\, ON\; and The Museum of Modern Art\, New York\, NY. In 2025\, Collins will have a mid-career retrospective curated by Kate Irvin at the RISD Museum in Providence\, RI\, with an accompanying monograph.\n\nCollins has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Knoxville Museum of Art\, Knoxville\, TN\; the Museum of Arts and Design\, New York\, NY\; the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery\, Saratoga Springs\, NY\; Touchstones Rochdale\, Rochdale\, UK\, among others. She has been featured in group exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art\, Boston\, MA\; the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art\, New York\, NY\; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, Los Angeles\, CA\; the National Gallery of Art\, Washington\, DC\; the New Museum\, New York\, NY\; The Drawing Center\, New York\, NY\; and The Museum of Modern Art\, New York\, NY\, among others. In 2020\, the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery released Liz Collins — Energy Field\, the artist’s first major publication.\n\nPresented in partnership with Design Core Detroit. This project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan. Series presenting partners: Detroit PBS and PBS Books. Media partner: Michigan Radio.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Digging Deeper: Thursday Night Lecture Series | Synthesizing Religion\, Politics\, and the Homeric Tradition: The West Sanctuary of Ilion during the Hellenistic and Roman Periods
DESCRIPTION:Join us to hear from visiting scholar C. Brian Rose\, professor of Mediterranean archaeology and curator-in-charge of the Mediterranean Section at the Penn Museum. \n\nThe West Sanctuary at Troy (Ilion) was one of the main religious complexes at the site during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The sanctuary is exceptional due to its rich assemblage of votive objects and integration of the cults of Cybele\, Dardanus\, and the Samothracian Gods. All of these cults are tied to Ilion’s Homeric heritage\, as well as to the Romans\, once they began promoting their Trojan ancestry. This talk provides an overview of the significance of the West Sanctuary and the strategies that we employed in its architectural conservation. The latter subject\, in turn\, is tied to the question of how an archaeologist handles or mishandles the staging of history.\n\nThis event is being presented as part of our Thursday Night Lecture Series\, happening on select months during the academic year. Please join us in the Rackham Amphitheatre (located on the fourth floor of the Rackham Building) for an evening centered on exciting archaeological research and related topics.\n\nIf you have any questions or concerns regarding accessing this event\, please visit our accessibility page at https://myumi.ch/zwPkd or contact the education office by calling (734) 647-4167. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Performance:Joshua Redman Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Presented by The A2 JAZZ FEST and The Ark.\n\nA thematic musical journey across America\n\nJoshua Redman is one of the most acclaimed and respected jazz artists to have emerged in our generation. His latest project\, Where Are We\, marks the first time that Joshua has included a vocalist (Gabrielle Cavassa) on a record\, and features Aaron Parks on piano\, Joe Sanders on bass\, and Brian Blade on drums\; with special guests Nicholas Payton (trumpet)\, Kurt Rosenwinkel (guitar)\, Peter Bernstein (guitar)\, and Joel Ross (vibes). Joshua notes that “the surface concept of WHERE ARE WE is rather simple: each of the songs on the album is about\, or at least makes reference to\, a specific geographical location (city or state or region) in the United States: Bruce Springsteen’s “Streets of Philadelphia\,” Count Basie’s “Going To Chicago\,” Rodgers & Hart’s “Manhattan” and John Coltrane’s Alabama\,” etc etc… So\, on one level\, this is an album “about” America — at once a celebration and a critique. But it is also\, to varying degrees\, a ballads album\, a standards album\, an album of romantic longing\, an album of social reflection\, an album of melodic invention\, an album of improvisational adventure\, an album of mashups (stylistic and titular)\, perhaps even a tribute album of sorts.”\n\nConceived and planned during the pandemic lockdown\, states Joshua\, “it was a dream come true to finally have a chance to connect Aaron\, Joe\, and Brian — 3 of the most sublimely lyrical and deeply grooving musicians on the planet\, who\, somehow\, had never before played together as a rhythm section. And it was a transformative experience to collaborate with Gabrielle — a vocalist of uncommon style\, sincerity\, and soul. This was my first time ever recording with a singer on one of my own projects\, and I relished the challenge of discovering and inhabiting new musical roles for myself — not only as a featured soloist and “lead” but also as a supportive accompanist and interlocutor. The magic of this particular gathering of musicians was that we were able to come together from points afar\, to converge (physically and creatively) in a particular place at a particular time\, and to embrace\, with the fullest imagination and without the slightest reservation\, the ethic of “serving the songs.” In this sense\, WHERE ARE WE is perhaps above all\, a meditation on the power and importance of place — the unique human beauty created when we locate ourselves in shared physical spaces together with others\; the loss\, anomie\, and angst suffered when we divide ourselves unnaturally and unjustly apart.”\n\nThis concert is sponsored by the A2 JAZZ FEST.
