SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\n*The exhibition is cosponsored by the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Steve Glazer Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Steve Glazer earned his BFA in art with a concentration in ceramics from Eastern Michigan University\, a master’s degree in art from Central Michigan University\, and MFA in fine arts and ceramics from Indiana State University. Since 2004\, Glazer has been lead faculty and head of ceramics at Henry Ford College\, and former faculty of Concord College (WV) and North Dakota State University. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the country.\n\nThroughout his adult life the art of Steve Glazer has been done as a response to his environment. From a series of shadow box type pieces containing life like ceramic fish while teaching at a Catholic woman’s college\, to building 8’ tall ceramic “skyscrapers” that barely fit into the display spaces while teaching in North Dakota\, where no skyscrapers exist\, and then creating installations commenting on living in Appalachia while teaching in southern West Virginia. After returning home to Detroit\, Glazer began his griot series\, the “Motor City Griot Society” masks\, the faces of the superheroes that will save Detroit\, and more recently the “Motor City Griot Patrol” creatures that will protect the city of Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Susan Moran Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Susan Moran’s work is inspired by the natural world and our place in it. She collects and arranges images\, builds and subtracts\, and uses processes that suit the concepts and gives the pieces a reason for existing as textiles. Simultaneously she strives to make the medium influence the outcome in such a way that cloth and image meld together. Moran uses silkscreen\, shibori\, and stitching to embed images from her daily walks into the fabric. it's important that the work builds slowly\, involving meditative processes that connect her to the cloth and the source of the design.\n\nGallery hours: Monday-Friday\, 9 am to 5pm or by appointment serrag@med.umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Butch Closet
DESCRIPTION:In the multi-media installation *The Butch Closet*\, artist Phranc illustrates her life stories as a queer artist\, Jewish lesbian folk singer\, and \"cardboard cobbler.\" By meticulously re-creating personal objects and pieces of clothing out of paper\, cardboard\, thread\, and paint\, she revisits her own history\, contextualizing her experiences as an iconic performer\, and maker\, constructing\, reconstructing\, and re-imagining her image against a larger historical context of second-wave feminism and queer activism. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet* is the second iteration of the project\, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works. As part of the installation\, visitors can peer into a closet built in the center of the gallery designed by the artist. Conceptually\, the space shifts from inside to outside\, public and private\, and explores themes of visibility and that which remains inaccessible or unseen.\n\nAbout the artist:\nPhranc is a jewish lesbian folksinger and queer artist who uses song\, painting and sculpture to champion personal identities and illustrate the struggle\, survival\, and victory of the queer individual. An internationally acclaimed and award winning performer. Phranc’s work integrates humor and a butch lesbian aesthetic. Her current project\, Phranc Talk: The Butch Closet\, is a multi-media memoir that spans her 40-year career. Phranc lives and works in Santa Monica\, California and Vancouver\, British Columbia.\n\n*Phranc is the 2024 Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.*

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Department of Astronomy 2024-2025 DEI Series Presents:
DESCRIPTION:\"Demystifying STEM through pen-pal relationships\"\n\nLetters to a Pre-Scientist (LPS) aims to humanize STEM professionals\, demystify science career paths\, and inspire students’ curiosity to explore a future in STEM. To achieve this\, LPS pairs fifth-tenth grade students (“pre-scientists”) in low-income US communities with STEM professionals from around the world for a year-long\, pen-pal relationship facilitated during science class. Through a highly personalized matching process\, the students learn about different science careers and higher education pathways from an individual STEM professional who shares similar hobbies\, interests\, and/or life experiences. LPS opts for this “snail-mail” approach in order to maximize the program's accessibility for all students\, reaching those that are not traditionally targeted by STEM extracurriculars. In this Conversions in Equity and Inclusion\, I will introduce the program and its unique approach to cultivating meaningful relationships between scientists and students who have limited access to traditional outreach efforts.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Runze Li\, Eberly Family Chair Professor in Statistic\, Penn State University
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: My talk aims to introduce an effective model-free inference procedure for high-dimensional data. We first reformulate the hypothesis testing problem via sufficient dimension reduction framework. With the aid of new reformulation\, we propose a new test statistic and show that its asymptotic distribution is chi-square distribution whose degree of freedom does not depend on the unknown population distribution. We further conduct power\nanalysis under local alternative hypotheses. In addition\, we study how to control the false discovery rate of the proposed chi-square tests\, which are correlated\, to identify important predictors under a model-free framework. To this end\, we propose a multiple testing procedure and establish its theoretical guarantees. Monte Carlo simulation studies are conducted to assess the performance of the proposed tests and an empirical analysis of a real-world data set is used to illustrate the proposed methodology.\n\nhttps://science.psu.edu/stat/people/ril4

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Kelly Church & Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: September 13 – December 7\, 2024Opening Reception: September 19\, 2024\n\nKelly Church &amp\; Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue is a major exhibition that centers the subjectivities of two contemporary Indigenous artists whose practices have sustained and bolstered the relevance of the age-old Anishinaabe practice of black ash basket-making in the 21st century. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter\, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors)\, young folx\, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories\, as well as those of survivance and resilience\, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps\, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA\, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing\, thinking\, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus\, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women’s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers\, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on\, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole\, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works\, including 15-17 new works. Together\, the exhibition offers an incisive critique of the colonial\, racist paradigm of systemic erasure and assimilation that continues to this day\, with the ongoing crises of missing and murdered Indigenous women\, culture wars\, and climate change that threaten Indigenous ways of living\, sustenance\, and making. \nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra with Curatorial Assistant Zoi Crampton.\nStamps Gallery is grateful to Michigan Humanities and U-M Arts Initiative for generously supporting the exhibition and programs.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Presentation:Aniruddha Dutta: The Vernacular(ized) Queer: Kothis\, Hijras\, and LGBTQ Politics in India
DESCRIPTION:Since the 1990s\, LGBTQ identities and movements have gained visibility in the Indian public sphere and pushed the state to concede some degree of rights and recognition. This talk explores how these developments have resulted in selective and constrained forms of representation and upward mobility for non-elite\, non-metropolitan communities such as kothis and hijras\, an overlapping spectrum of rans feminine people often assigned male at birth. Drawing on my forthcoming book Globalizing through the Vernacular: Kothis\, Hijras\, and the Making of Queer and Trans Identities in India\, I will explore how these communities facilitate the transregional expansion of organized queer politics\, yet often remain irreducible to emerging identity categories and become subordinated through linguistic and scalar hierarchies that reinforce class and caste inequities within and beyond LGBTQ communities. To understand this process\, the book offers the analytic of ‘vernacularization’ – not in its usual sense as the translation of global/transnational discourses into the local or vernacular\, but as the positioning of certain communities and discourses as local/vernacular in the first place. The talk will explore how this process denies vernacularized communities an equal role in (trans)national LGBTQ politics and delegitimizes or effaces articulations of gender/sexual difference that contravene dominant \nunderstandings of gender/sexual identity aligned with transnational capitalism\, liberalism\, caste\, and/or nationalism. Simultaneously\, it will explore how non-elite communities rearticulate dominant LGBTQ discourses in more liberatory ways.\n\nAniruddha Dutta is an Associate Professor of Gender\, Women’s\, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Iowa. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:FSML Lecture Series: Tokenization for Chemistry
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nMolecular Foundation Models are emerging as a powerful tool for molecular design\, material science\, and cheminformatics. By leveraging the transformer architecture\, these models attempt to learn the language of chemistry and discover robust molecular embeddings. However\, current models are constrained by tokenizers that fail to capture the full breadth of chemical space or even the periodic table of elements. In his talk\, Alex will introduce smirk\, a new tokenizer for molecular foundation models that can represent the entirety of the OpenSMILES specification. We'll also discuss performance metrics for tokenizers and the results of Alex's systematic evaluation of thirteen chemistry-specific tokenizers using N-gram language models as a low-cost proxy for transformer models.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Upper Mississippian Transition of the Lower Great Lakes: A Case Study from the “Foot of the Rapids” of the Maumee River\, Ohio
DESCRIPTION:The Late Woodland to Upper Mississippian cultural transition in the Lower Great Lakes has been acknowledged by archaeologists for decades\, but the nature of the transition has remained poorly understood. Archaeologists have hypothesized that the stark cultural shift in the Western Lake Erie region\, from the Late Woodland period to the “the Wolf phase\,” could represent warfare and displacement of local Late Woodland peoples by Upper Mississippian aggressors\, but this hypothesis has remained unsubstantiated by archaeological data. The other hypothesis suggested a local adaptation to a changing climate and sociopolitical environment.\n\nThe Maumee Archaeological Landscape Project (M.A.L.P.) adopts both a local and regional approach to address the cause of the cultural shift at ca. AD 1250 in the Maumee River valley. This dissertation research project presents new data from excavations at a ditch-enclosed village from the Williams #2 site (33-WO-7b) at Buttonwood property\, along with new radiocarbon dates and ceramic analyses from local sites. New data suggests that defense likely was a major cause for the heightened sedentism seen throughout the river valleys of Western Lake Erie\; however\, the local displacement hypothesis is not supported. Rather\, increasing regional hostility and tensions likely triggered migration into the river valleys of Western Lake Erie\, co-habitation with communities connected through alliance\, and ensuing ethnogenesis with local Late Woodland peoples.

DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Eli Wilson takes us inside the world of craft beer\, exposing how the industry\, traditionally dominated by bearded white men\, can be an exclusionary space that limits career opportunities for outsiders. Dr. Wilson's research asks big questions about how racism\, sexism\, and class dynamics impact the career paths of craft beer’s workers\, exploring how men tend to move into creative roles of authority\, whereas women are steered towards hospitality and working-class or Latinx workers into warehouse roles. While some of this is not surprising\, the heart of this talk is a critique of what it means to pursue a career of passion. Many people\, including those who might have traditionally pursued a white-collar career\, are drawn to the world of craft brewing because they want to be involved with something they love. They want to create\, make a craft\, be an artisan. But at what cost to themselves – and for those around them?

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Ex Post Strategy-proofness
DESCRIPTION:In this paper\, we study ex post strategy-proofness (ESP)\, a natural notion of strategy- proofness in settings with interdependent values. ESP requires that\, for every agent\, truthful reporting is always optimal regardless of the strategies and types of other agents. For environments with transfers\, ESP implementability is characterized by a generalized cyclical monotonicity condition. Alternatively\, implementability can be characterized by an optimality condition related to an induced matching problem between types and alternatives. In an important class of environments where types satisfy a generalized “one-dimensionality” property\, implementability is equivalent to a simple monotonicity condition where “higher” types receive “higher” alternatives. Using this finding\, we show that for a single object auction\, more allocation rules are implementable if either the type space is less dense or the extent of preference interdependence is less severe. For environments without transfers\, nontrivial implementation is possible only when preferences exhibit sufficient independence. In the context of binary and ternary voting models\, we illustrate how this condition significantly constrains the scope of implementation.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: The algebra of system-level design
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The task of system design is shared by all engineering disciplines\, each coming with its own techniques. In spite of their differences in tools\, there is large intersection in their conceptual approach to design. In this talk\, we exploit this commonality to take an abstract view of systems and their composition. We understand systems and subsystems in terms of their assume-guarantee specifications\, or contracts.\n \nAssume-guarantee contracts are formal specifications that state (i) the assumptions that a design element makes on its environment and (ii) the guarantees it delivers when the environment behaves according to the contract's assumptions. Contracts come with a rich algebra that allows us to carry out several design-relevant tasks: obtaining system-level specifications from component specifications\, finding specifications of components that need to be added to a design in order to meet an objective\, etc. We will introduce the algebra of contracts and discuss how the various algebraic operations relate to system-design tasks. We will then provide a universal characterization of contracts as the adjoint of a well-known functor. Time permitting\, we will discuss the application of this methodology and Pacti\, a software package that supports system design using contracts\, in areas ranging from space-mission design to autonomous vehicles.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Cyclically ordered quivers (Combinatorics Seminar)
DESCRIPTION:Quivers and their mutations play a fundamental role in the theory of cluster algebras. We focus on the problem of deciding whether two given quivers are mutation equivalent to each other. Our approach is based on introducing an additional structure of a cyclic ordering on the set of vertices of a quiver. This leads to new powerful invariants of quiver mutation. These invariants can be used to show that various quivers are not mutation acyclic\, i.e.\, they are not mutation equivalent to an acyclic quiver. This talk is partially based on joint work with Sergey Fomin [arXiv:2406.03604].

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Fusing conformal defects in higher dimensions
DESCRIPTION:We study operator algebra of extended conformal defects in more than two spacetime dimensions. Such algebra structure encodes the combined effect of multiple impurities on physical observables at long distances as well as the interactions among the impurities. These features are formalized by a fusion product which we define for a pair of defects\, after isolating divergences that capture the effective potential between the defects. These divergences generalize the usual Casimir energy and define a novel effective field theory for defects. We discuss general properties of the corresponding fusion algebra and give explicit examples. We also derive universal formulas for defect structure constants from the defect effective field theory.

DESCRIPTION:It is believed that the world of projective varieties is built upon three pillars\, depending on the positivity of the canonical bundle K. If K is negative or positive\, they are called Fano\, or canonically polarized\, which people have some understanding of (ex\, moduli). The monster lives there where K has no positivity nor negativity. We will investigate what kind of varieties we have in this world.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Webinar: Course-Based Research Provides Coastal Insights Through Collaborative Science and Big Data Skills
DESCRIPTION:The National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) System-Wide Monitoring Program (SWMP) provides an opportunity to compare site-based monitoring data from a wide range of estuaries across the nation to discover patterns and trends in ecosystem dynamics. Despite decades of SWMP data being amassed – and the Reserve System’s interest in investigating long-term changes in estuarine systems – limited personnel capacity has often prevented these datasets from being fully utilized. To address this need\, a catalyst project developed a graduate level class at University of Wisconsin-Madison for Spring 2024 with dual learning objectives: a technical objective to learn ecological big data skills and a collaborative objective to learn how to conduct user-driven collaborative science. In this webinar\, the project team will share their journey of developing and implementing the class\, highlight student findings\, and demonstrate analyses that they used to address science and management questions. They will also discuss lessons learned along the way and future opportunities for this teaching model to be used by the NERRS and partners.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Christopher Francis\, Stanford University
DESCRIPTION:Ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) carry out key transformations of ammonia in estuarine systems such as San Francisco Bay (SFB)—the largest estuary on the west coast of North America—and play a significant role in both local and global nitrogen cycling. Using metagenomics and 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing\, we found that AOA are more abundant than ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria\, except in the freshwater stations in SFB. Surprisingly\, in South SFB we observed recurrent AOA blooms of “Candidatus Nitrosomarinus catalina” SPOT01-like organisms\, which account for over 20% of the overall microbial community and co-occur with weeks of high nitrite concentrations (>10 μM) in the oxic water column. We also observed pronounced nitrite peaks occurring in the autumn for 7 of the last 9 years\, suggesting that seasonal AOA blooms are common in South SFB. To carefully examine the dynamics and activity of nitrifying microorganisms over the course of an AOA bloom in South SFB\, we measured nitrification rates\, quantified AOA abundance\, and analyzed both metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data during the autumn of 2018 and seasonally throughout 2019. Overall\, our study confirms that AOA are not only abundant but also highly active during blooms oxidizing large amounts of ammonia to nitrite—a key intermediate in the microbial nitrogen cycle—and producing reactive compounds that may impact other members of the microbial community.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Kavita Datla Memorial Lecture | Criss-crossing narratives of empire: Sir Syed at Versailles and the French conquest of Algeria
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/Rm5e4 \n\nIn 1869\, Sayyid Ahmad Khan (“Sir Syed”) made a brief stop in Paris on his way to a life-transforming journey to Britain. At Versailles\, he was shocked and upset when confronted by a huge\, almost panoramic painting\, “La prise de smala d’Abd el-Kader” for its brutal depiction of the humiliation of the Algerians\, particularly the women\, which for the French was a triumphal celebration of a turning point in their conquest of Algeria a quarter century earlier. Sayyid Ahmad’s encounter with the painting summons up a challenge for historical exposition\, weaving together histories of nineteenth-century French and British imperialism with respect to North Africa and India and the lives of two major contemporary leaders\, Amir Abd al-Qadir and Sayyid Ahmad Khan.\n\nDavid Lelyveld is the author of *Aligarh’s First Generation: Muslim Solidarity in British India* (1978\, reprinted 2003). His publications also deal with the social and political history of Urdu and its differentiation from Hindi. He has held faculty and administrative positions at the University of Minnesota\, Columbia and Cornell. He retired as Professor of History at William Paterson University in New Jersey.\n \n *The lecture is made possible through the generosity of Dr. Kavita Datla's family and friends.*\n\nFree and open to the public

SUMMARY:Performance:Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare
DESCRIPTION:Fate. Freedom. Power. This wild & fresh adaptation of one of the greatest political tragedies in theatrical history opens up the traditional confines of the narrative to explore the still-beating heart that resonates loudly in today’s political landscape. \n\nAdapted & directed by Priscilla Lindsay\n\nRecommended Ages: 15+\n\n*Content Advisory*\nContains depictions of intimacy\, violence and death by suicide.\n\n*Friday Post-Show Discussions*\n\nThe company of \"Julius Caesar\" will host two post-show discussions\, immediately following the two performances on Friday nights.\n\nThe October 4 post-show discussion will focus on how this production of Julius Caesar\, with an all-women cast\, challenges traditional notions of power and leadership by placing women in roles historically played by men. The portrayal of ambition\, loyalty\, and betrayal takes on new meaning when viewed through the lens of gender\, raising important questions about how women in leadership are perceived and judged today. As we approach the 2024 presidential election\, this performance invites us to reflect on the barriers women face in political life and how public rhetoric\, like that seen in the play\, continues to shape our understanding of authority and influence in modern society. The conversation will be led by M. Candace Christensen (they/them)\, an associate professor at the University of Michigan School of Social Work\, and Ashley Lucas (she/her)\, a professor in the Department of Theatre & Drama.\n\n
