DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Steve Glazer Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Steve Glazer earned his BFA in art with a concentration in ceramics from Eastern Michigan University\, a master’s degree in art from Central Michigan University\, and MFA in fine arts and ceramics from Indiana State University. Since 2004\, Glazer has been lead faculty and head of ceramics at Henry Ford College\, and former faculty of Concord College (WV) and North Dakota State University. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the country.\n\nThroughout his adult life the art of Steve Glazer has been done as a response to his environment. From a series of shadow box type pieces containing life like ceramic fish while teaching at a Catholic woman’s college\, to building 8’ tall ceramic “skyscrapers” that barely fit into the display spaces while teaching in North Dakota\, where no skyscrapers exist\, and then creating installations commenting on living in Appalachia while teaching in southern West Virginia. After returning home to Detroit\, Glazer began his griot series\, the “Motor City Griot Society” masks\, the faces of the superheroes that will save Detroit\, and more recently the “Motor City Griot Patrol” creatures that will protect the city of Detroit.

DESCRIPTION:Susan Moran’s work is inspired by the natural world and our place in it.  She collects and arranges images\, builds and subtracts\, and uses processes that suit the concepts and gives the pieces a reason for existing as textiles.  Simultaneously she strives to make the medium  influence the  outcome in such a way that cloth and image meld together. DESCRIPTION:In the multi-media installation *The Butch Closet*\, artist Phranc illustrates her life stories as a queer artist\, Jewish lesbian folk singer\, and \"cardboard cobbler.\" By meticulously re-creating personal objects and pieces of clothing out of paper\, cardboard\, thread\, and paint\, she revisits her own history\, contextualizing her experiences as an iconic performer\, and maker\, constructing\, reconstructing\, and re-imagining her image against a larger historical context of second-wave feminism and queer activism. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet* is the second iteration of the project\, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works. As part of the installation\, visitors can peer into a closet built in the center of the gallery designed by the artist. Conceptually\, the space shifts from inside to outside\, public and private\, and explores themes of visibility and that which remains inaccessible or unseen.\n\nAbout the artist:\nPhranc is a jewish lesbian folksinger and queer artist who uses song\, painting and sculpture to champion personal identities and illustrate the struggle\, survival\, and victory of the queer individual. An internationally acclaimed and award winning performer. Phranc’s work integrates humor and a butch lesbian aesthetic. Her current project\, Phranc Talk: The Butch Closet\, is a multi-media memoir that spans her 40-year career. Phranc lives and works in Santa Monica\, California and Vancouver\, British Columbia.\n\n*Phranc is the 2024 Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.*

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Vesuvius Scrolls: From Ancient Manuscripts to Artificial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, Octobor 7\, 2024\, 10:00 am – 6:45 pm\nHussey Room\, Michigan League (911 N University Ave\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109)\n\nTuesday\, Octobor 8\, 2024\, 9:30 am – 12:30 pm\nHatcher Gallery\, Hacher Graduate Library (913 S University Ave\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109)\n\nAbout: The Herculaneum Papyri\, buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 and rediscovered in 1754\, constitute the only library from the ancient Mediterranean world (except the library of Ashurbanipal and the Dead Sea Scrolls) that was found in circumstances that preserved it intact. It contains unique works of ancient Greek philosophy and Roman literature. Many of the 800 papyrus-rolls were opened physically (and thereby badly damaged)\, but around 270 scrolls or parts of them survive in their original condition\, being too fragile to be opened. \n\nSince 2005\, computer scientist Brent Seales has toiled to discover a way to recover their texts without damaging them. His work entailed using CT technology to separate and flatten digitally the successive circumferences and “unroll” the papyrus digitally on screen. The next problem was how to recognize the ink. The latter problem was resolved in 2024 by Casey Craig’s recognition of ‘crackle’ and then the application of Machine Learning.  Upon the initiative of Nat Friedman\, who established the Vesuvius Challenge\, and with contributions from many members of the international AI community\, three contestants\, Luke Farritor\, Youssef Nader\, and Julian Schilliger\, won the Grand Prize by producing legible images of Greek text of 16 columns from a roll that is preserved in Paris and was scanned with the Diamond Light Source at Oxford. \n\nAnother Grand Prize has been offered for 2024\, focused on recovering the text from all four scrolls that are in Paris. This one-day conference is timed to bring together papyrologists and experts in Artificial Intelligence to review the progress that has been made\, consider how to address the problems that remain\, and to discuss future directions\, including the potential for the use of AI in work on other collections of damaged manuscripts and in the humanities more widely. On the following day there will be a workshop to exchange ideas. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CMENAS 2024 Fall Colloquium Series. The Evolution of the Palestinian Refugee Camps in Jordan
DESCRIPTION:The presentation analyses the political and socioeconomic issues raised by the evolution of the camps' physical and social infrastructure in Jordan since their establishment in the wake of the 1948 and 1967 Arab-Israeli wars. In so doing\, the presentation tackles the gradual development and integration of camps in their local environment\, discussing the way camp refugees\, together with the international (UNRWA) and Jordanian stakeholders have dealt with the dilemmas posed by such integration : how develop camps in line with the evolving needs of the refugees while guaranteeing their temporary nature in the name of the “right of return”\, as supported by numerous UN resolutions? Conversely\, how reconcile the preservation of the camps\, with their generally substandard infrastructure and socially-strained social relations\, and the country’s drive towards urban modernization ? The presentation will also address the « camps’ society » : To what extent do camp refugees constitute specific communities\, socially/politically distinct from neighbouring communities?\n   \n   Jalal Al Husseini is an associate research fellow in political sociology at the French Institute for the Near East (IFPO). Based in Amman since 1997\, he has specialized in refugee assistance and labor market issues. Holder of a PhD obtained at the Graduate Institute of International Studies (Geneva)\, with a doctoral dissertation on the political dimensions of UNRWA’s mandate\, he is the author of numerous published academic articles and policy-oriented reports\, and the editor of several collective books including Palestinians between State and Diaspora: uncertainty times (2011) and Palestine in Networks (2020) and Migrations in Jordan: Reception Policies and Settlement Strategies (2024). He has also consulted with various international organizations\, including UNRWA\, the EU\, the ILO and foreign cooperation agencies\, on legal status and livelihoods issues specific to the Palestinian and Syrian refugees and their host communities in Jordan and in the Middle East.

DESCRIPTION:SMTD doctoral alumna Jenna Moon performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Earplugs are available from the carillonist upon request. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Here “reasonable” means that the theory can prove basic facts about the natural numbers\; Peano arithmetic is more than enough.\n\nThe notation used in provability logic (meaning in the particular provability logic that I’ll concentrate on) is the same as in most modal logics\, namely ordinary propositional logic plus a modal operator\, written as a box. But the box operator has the unusual interpretation “it is provable that”. It turns out that this provability logic can be axiomatized by adding to ordinary propositional logic just one axiom (schema) and one inference rule. The rule is very simple\, but the axiom expresses Löb’s theorem\, a far from obvious fact about provability.\n\nI’ll begin by explaining Löb’s theorem. Then I’ll discuss the axiomatic system of provability logic and a few proofs in that system. Next\, I’ll describe the Kripke models of provability logic. Finally\, I’ll discuss two completeness theorems for this logic\, one saying that Kripke models provide a complete semantics\, and the other saying that provability logic exactly captures what a reasonable theory can prove about its own provability.

DESCRIPTION:Presentation Abstract\nFace processing plays a central role in everyday human life. We investigate the nature of face representation and processing in the brain\, by adapting and developing appropriate machine learning and computer vision methods. In the Foundations portion of the lecture\, I will be giving a review of the technical methods utilised in our modeling work\, including novel methods for combining image-computable machine vision algorithms with more classical psychological methods\, such as multidimensional scaling\, that take human similarity judgments into account.\n\nIn the Frontiers portion of the lecture\, I will describe our work using a neurobiologically supported and psychologically informed face representation\, to computational model and quantify human perception and judgment of faces\, including a computational explanations of the provenance of certain racial and gender biases. Her group uses mathematically rigorous and algorithmically diverse tools to understand the nature of representation and computations that give rise to intelligent behavior\, with particular regard to the challenges posed by inferential uncertainty and the opportunities afforded by volitional control. Using diverse machine learning and statistical tools\, e.g. Bayesian statistical modeling\, control theory\, reinforcement learning\, and information theory\, theoretical frameworks and mathematical models are developed to explain disparate aspects of cognition importation for intelligence: perception\, attention\, decision-making\, learning\, cognitive control\, active sensing\, economic behavior\, and social interactions. After completing her bachelor’s at MIT\, PhD at UCL Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit\, and postdoc training at Princeton University\, Dr. Yu was faculty at UCSD Cognitive Science for 14 years before joining TU Darmstadt in Germany as an Alexander von Humboldt AI Professor in late 2022. With her interdisciplinary expertise and interest\, Dr. Yu’s arrival strengthens and complements research at the Centre for Cognitive Science at TU Darmstadt and at hessian.AI\, the Centre for Artificial Intelligence of Hesse based in Darmstadt. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Calibrating a Galactic-Scale Gravitational Wave Detector: Pulsar Timing Array Noise Modeling and Characterization
DESCRIPTION:Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) are galactic-scale nanohertz gravitational wave observatories. Each individual arm\, composed of a millisecond pulsar\, a radio telescope\, and a kiloparsecs-long path\, differs in its properties but\, together\, can be used to extract low-frequency gravitational wave (GW) signals. While gravitational waves in the nanohertz band are orders of magnitude larger than signals in the ground-based and space-based regimes\, the noise sources in pulsar data are also comparatively larger. Here we will describe detector characterization for PTAs\, which requires simultaneously modeling the signal and noise across our astrophysical detector. Serendipitously\, many of the noise processes at work in pulsar observations\, considered noise when searching for nanohertz gravitational waves\, contain interesting astrophysics in their own right. After a general introduction to the subject\, I will highlight new time-domain analysis work that allows us to mitigate stochastic processes from the interstellar medium and intrinsic processes in the pulsars. Lastly\, I will present a noise and sensitivity analysis of the NANOGrav 15-year data release.

DESCRIPTION:Implicit bias has expanded beyond academic research and\, like cognitive dissonance and nudges\, entered into the cultural mainstream. Politicians talk about it\, journalists write about it\, and corporations require their employees to be trained about it. At the same time\, the measures and methods used to study implicit bias have come under increasing criticism. How can implicit bias be so prevalent and yet stand on such apparently shaky grounds? In this talk I describe a new theory that describes implicit bias not primarily as a feature of individual minds\, but as a feature of social contexts. Akin to the “wisdom of crowds” effect\, implicit bias may emerge as the aggregate effect of individual fluctuations in concept accessibility that are ephemeral and context-dependent. This Bias of Crowds theory treats implicit bias tests as measures of situations more than persons. Viewing implicit bias from this perspective resolves several puzzles in the existing literature\, turns supposed methodological weaknesses into strengths\, and generates new insights into how and why implicit bias propagates inequalities. \n\nKeith Payne is Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at UNC Chapel Hill. He studies the effects of inequality on human thought and behavior\, and how psychological patterns create and reinforce racial and economic disparities. He is author of The Broken Ladder: How Inequality Affects the way we Think\, Live\, and Die\, and the forthcoming Good Reasonable People: The Psychology Behind America’s Dangerous Divide.\n\nThe RCGD Seminar Series on the Social Psychology of Systemic Racism meets Mondays from 3:30 to 5 at ISR Thompson 1430. Chinese exclusion policies across the Anglo-American world showed the importance of domestic racism in the formation of nation-state identities. At another level\, they were also integral to the development of the late nineteenth-century ascent of Great Britain and the U.S. as global economic hegemons\, as creditors and as colonizers\, as nation builders\, and as empire builders. Because China was never formally colonized\, the Western powers imposed unequal treaties and exclusion laws as instruments of colonialism and containment. Exclusion policies were integral dynamics of colonialism and capitalism\; part of a new way of imagining\, organizing\, and governing the world.\n\nMae M. DESCRIPTION:Cluster algebras are a class of commutative rings with a special set of generators endowed with a nice combinatorial structure. A traditional problem in the field pertains to rings of regular functions over some algebraic variety: whether they possess a cluster algebra description\, and if so\, how to describe as many clusters as possible. Weaves are a type of diagram first discovered in connection to symplectic geometry.  In this talk\, we will describe braid varieties\, a large class including (open) Richardson varieties\; and we show how to use weaves to describe a large set of clusters in the coordinate rings of these varieties.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:STeMS Speaker Series | Viral: Metaphor\, Narrative\, Music
DESCRIPTION:Even prior to the COVID-19 pandemic\, “going viral” had nonetheless become commonplace—the epidemiological metaphor characterizing an increasingly-familiar trajectory of explosive circulation\, remix\, and reportage expanding from individual nodes of audiovisual content online. This presentation briefly historicizes and contextualizes the contagious concept\, before suggesting how “virality”—as aesthetic repertoire\, as popular narrative\, as social logic made concrescent in platform architectures—might also be understood as a form of musicality.\n\nI argue that participation in the production\, watching\, listening to\, circulating\, or sharing of “viral” digital internet objects has constituted a significant site of 21st-century musical practice. And across the 21st century\, digital platforms have adapted to facilitate this viral musicality\, using music’s positive capacities—aesthetic pleasure\, communal participation\, social connectivity—to enable corporate profit-making\, corral attention\, and incentivize acceptance of increasing technocapital enclosure of the internet and everyday life.\n\nPaula Clare Harper\, Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago\, is a musicologist who researches music\, sound\, and the internet. She is interested in putting digital ephemera and oddities into broader context\, in hearing the musicality of online meme cultures\, and in tracking music’s creation and circulation across digital platforms and communities. Her current book projects include Viral Musicking and the Rise of Noisy Platforms\, and the co-edited collection Taylor Swift: The Star\, The Songs\, The Fans.

SUMMARY:Presentation:U-M Psychology Community Talks: Dr. Kevin Cokley
DESCRIPTION:Talk Overview: Do you ever doubt your achievements? Have negative self-talk? Come up with excuses for your success? Feel like your failures define you? Feel like you don’t belong? Question your abilities? You are not alone. These are all hallmarks of the impostor phenomenon. These thoughts and feelings are common among many people\, with research indicating that over 80% of people report having impostor feelings. The impostor phenomenon is especially prevalent among women and minoritized individuals. In this talk\, Dr. Kevin Cokley will engage participants in a research-informed discussion about the impostor phenomenon. He will discuss how the impostor phenomenon is created and describe the impostor cycle. Dr. Cokley will highlight his research that examines how the impostor phenomenon impacts mental health and achievement among women and minoritized individuals and make the case for why there needs to be a reconceptualized\, racialized impostor phenomenon. Dr. Cokley will end by providing recommendations on how to combat impostor feelings. \n\nAbout the Speaker: Kevin Cokley\, Ph.D. is the University Diversity and Social Transformation Professor and Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan where he serves as Associate Chair of Diversity Initiatives for the Department of Psychology. Dr. Cokley studies the psychosocial experiences of African American students and students of color and is currently exploring the impostor phenomenon and its relationship to mental health and academic outcomes. He is the past Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Black Psychology and holds the title of Distinguished Psychologist from the Association of Black Psychologists. He is past President of the Society for the Psychological Study of Culture\, Ethnicity\, and Race\, and was elected to Fellow status in the American Psychological Association for his contributions to ethnic minority psychology and counseling psychology. He is editor of the 2024 book “The Impostor Phenomenon: Psychological Research\, Theory\, and Interventions.” His research on the impostor phenomenon has been featured in the New York Times and the Harvard Business Review. Dr. Cokley has given numerous invited talks on the impostor phenomenon at places including Johns Hopkins University\, the University of Chicago\, UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior Grand Rounds\, Notre Dame University Law School\, the International Toastmaster Conference\, and Morgan Stanley.\n\nExploring the Mind: Community Talks by U-M Psychology Faculty is a talk series held in collaboration with the Ann Arbor District Library (AADL).\n\nTalks for Fall 2024 will be held in-person at AADL's downtown branch.
