SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\n*The exhibition is cosponsored by the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Steve Glazer Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Steve Glazer earned his BFA in art with a concentration in ceramics from Eastern Michigan University\, a master’s degree in art from Central Michigan University\, and MFA in fine arts and ceramics from Indiana State University. Since 2004\, Glazer has been lead faculty and head of ceramics at Henry Ford College\, and former faculty of Concord College (WV) and North Dakota State University. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the country.\n\nThroughout his adult life the art of Steve Glazer has been done as a response to his environment. From a series of shadow box type pieces containing life like ceramic fish while teaching at a Catholic woman’s college\, to building 8’ tall ceramic “skyscrapers” that barely fit into the display spaces while teaching in North Dakota\, where no skyscrapers exist\, and then creating installations commenting on living in Appalachia while teaching in southern West Virginia. After returning home to Detroit\, Glazer began his griot series\, the “Motor City Griot Society” masks\, the faces of the superheroes that will save Detroit\, and more recently the “Motor City Griot Patrol” creatures that will protect the city of Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Susan Moran Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Susan Moran’s work is inspired by the natural world and our place in it. She collects and arranges images\, builds and subtracts\, and uses processes that suit the concepts and gives the pieces a reason for existing as textiles. Simultaneously she strives to make the medium influence the outcome in such a way that cloth and image meld together. Moran uses silkscreen\, shibori\, and stitching to embed images from her daily walks into the fabric. it's important that the work builds slowly\, involving meditative processes that connect her to the cloth and the source of the design.\n\nGallery hours: Monday-Friday\, 9 am to 5pm or by appointment serrag@med.umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Butch Closet
DESCRIPTION:In the multi-media installation *The Butch Closet*\, artist Phranc illustrates her life stories as a queer artist\, Jewish lesbian folk singer\, and \"cardboard cobbler.\" By meticulously re-creating personal objects and pieces of clothing out of paper\, cardboard\, thread\, and paint\, she revisits her own history\, contextualizing her experiences as an iconic performer\, and maker\, constructing\, reconstructing\, and re-imagining her image against a larger historical context of second-wave feminism and queer activism. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet* is the second iteration of the project\, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works. As part of the installation\, visitors can peer into a closet built in the center of the gallery designed by the artist. Conceptually\, the space shifts from inside to outside\, public and private\, and explores themes of visibility and that which remains inaccessible or unseen.\n\nAbout the artist:\nPhranc is a jewish lesbian folksinger and queer artist who uses song\, painting and sculpture to champion personal identities and illustrate the struggle\, survival\, and victory of the queer individual. An internationally acclaimed and award winning performer. Phranc’s work integrates humor and a butch lesbian aesthetic. Her current project\, Phranc Talk: The Butch Closet\, is a multi-media memoir that spans her 40-year career. Phranc lives and works in Santa Monica\, California and Vancouver\, British Columbia.\n\n*Phranc is the 2024 Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.*

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Kelly Church & Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: September 13 – December 7\, 2024Opening Reception: September 19\, 2024\n\nKelly Church &amp\; Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue is a major exhibition that centers the subjectivities of two contemporary Indigenous artists whose practices have sustained and bolstered the relevance of the age-old Anishinaabe practice of black ash basket-making in the 21st century. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter\, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors)\, young folx\, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories\, as well as those of survivance and resilience\, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps\, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA\, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing\, thinking\, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus\, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women’s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers\, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on\, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole\, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works\, including 15-17 new works. Together\, the exhibition offers an incisive critique of the colonial\, racist paradigm of systemic erasure and assimilation that continues to this day\, with the ongoing crises of missing and murdered Indigenous women\, culture wars\, and climate change that threaten Indigenous ways of living\, sustenance\, and making. \nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra with Curatorial Assistant Zoi Crampton.\nStamps Gallery is grateful to Michigan Humanities and U-M Arts Initiative for generously supporting the exhibition and programs.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Quantum Research Institute Seminar | Engineering Robust Quantum Systems with Quantum Control
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nQuantum devices could perform some informational tasks with much better performances than classical systems\, with profound implications for cryptography\, chemistry\, material science\, and many areas of physics. However\, to reach this goal we need to control large quantum systems\, where the many-body dynamics might scramble the quantum information\, heating up the system to its thermal state. \nThere are then two key questions: \n- How does a closed quantum system thermalize (thus losing its “quantum power”)? \n- How can we preserve quantum information in the presence of strong interactions\, disorder\, and noise? \nUsing spins as an exemplary experimental system\, I will show how to choreograph their dynamics in order to prevent the system from heating up\, even in the presence of strong interactions among spins. I will further show how we can turn disorder from a source of noise to a tool that enables probing the system at the angstrom level. An exemplary application is the creation and characterization of a robust time crystal. \n\nBio:\nPaola Cappellaro is Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a member of the Research Lab for Electronics\, where she leads the Quantum Engineering Group. She received her Ph.D in 2006 from MIT and she then joined Harvard University as a postdoctoral associate in the Institute for Theoretical Atomic\, Molecular and Optical Physics (ITAMP)\, before going back to MIT as a faculty in 2009.\nProf. Cappellaro is an expert in NMR\, ESR\, coherent control and quantum information science. She is a specialist in spin-based quantum information processing and precision measurements in the solid state. With collaborators\, she developed the concept and first demonstrations of NV-diamond magnetometers. Cappellaro's major contributions have been in developing control techniques for nuclear and electronic spin qubits\, including NV-diamond\, inspired by NMR techniques and quantum information ideas. The goal is the realization of practical quantum nano-devices\, such as sensors and simulators\, more powerful than their classical counterparts\, as well as the acquisition of a deeper knowledge of quantum systems and their environment. Her work has been recently recognized by the Young Investigator Award from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and a Merkator Fellowship.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Noon Lecture Series | The Hidden Diversity of the Japanese People: Deconstructing Japan’s Nation-Building Process
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This lecture will be held in person in room 1010 Weiser Hall and virtually via Zoom. This webinar is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. Once you've registered\, the joining information will be sent to your email. Register for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/23XWZ\n \n When leaders in the Meiji period were forging the nation state\, they created the concept of the *Yamato minzoku* (people) in order to justify imperial rule. After World War II\, a discourse that Japan had been a homogeneous country since ancient times and that this homogeneity was spurring contemporaneous economic growth gained traction. Prof. Okamoto would like to challenge this discourse by focusing on several of the “non-Yamato peoples”\, such as the Emishi of the North-East\, the Kumaso of Southern Kyushu\, and the Izumo of the north side of the Chugoku region\, in order to demonstrate how the prevailing contemporary consciousness of Japan’s national identity relied upon denying the internal diversity of Japanese society.\n \n Masataka Okamoto was born and grew up in Izumo. He received a Ph.D. in Social Science in 2000 from the Hitotsubashi University\, Tokyo\, Japan. Since the end of the 1980s\, the focus of his work has been the protection and promotion of the rights of ethnic minorities. He studied at the Capital Normal University and the Central University for Nationalities in Beijing\, China for eighteen months from 1991 to 1993. He served as the secretary for IMADR (International Movement against All Forms of Discrimination and Racism) from 1993 to 1995 and was the SMJ (Solidarity Network with Migrants Japan) vice secretary general from 2004 to 2014. He joined the staff of Fukuoka Prefectural University in 2000. He also joined the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University as a visiting scholar from April 2008 to March 2009.\n \n This lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at umcjs@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:LSI Seminar Series: Mitchell Guttman\, Ph.D.\, California Institute of Technology
DESCRIPTION:The nucleus is a highly organized arrangement of RNA\, DNA and protein molecules that are compartmentalized within three-dimensional (3D) structures involved in shared functional and regulatory processes. Yet\, what drives the molecular and spatial organization of these 3D compartments and what functional role(s) they play remains largely unknown. \n\nHere\, we will discuss a widespread role for non-coding RNAs in seeding compartments throughout the nucleus and describe a unique mechanism for how ncRNAs drive concentration-dependent transitions from diffuse localization to compartmentalized structures. We will describe how these ncRNA-mediated compartments control major classes of nuclear functions\, including RNA processing\, heterochromatin assembly\, and gene regulation. Finally\, we will discuss several emerging mechanistic paradigms for how compartments ensure quantitative regulation in the nucleus.\n\nSpeaker: \nMitchell Guttman\, Ph.D.\nProfessor\, California Institute of Technology\nInvestigator\, Heritage Medical Research Institute

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Racial disparities without racism: Some conceptual & analytical considerations
DESCRIPTION:Most studies on racial inequality begin with a series of statistics highlighting racial variations in an outcome of interest to illustrate how wide (or narrow) the gaps between racialized groups are. This approach is standard in racial inequality research because emphasizing racial differentials between racialized groups help researchers frame inequality as a social problem. Scholars across academic disciplines and across sub-areas within sociology report racial statistics to pay attention to what social scientists refer to as racial disparities.\n\nPresenting racial disparities is extremely important for documenting inequality\; however\, family scholars tend to provide descriptive statistical portraits along ethno-racial lines (disparities) in the absence of racism\, which\, in turn\, conceals the United States' racialized historical context. The purpose of this presentation is to provide conceptual and analytical considerations for future racial inequality and family research by recasting disparities as manifestations of racism instead of mere statistical differences.\n\nThis talk is part of the Inclusive Research Matters Series at the Institute for Social Research.\n\nThis hybrid event will take place at the Institute for Social Research\, room 1430 and via Zoom.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ChE SEMINAR: Selen Cremaschi\, Auburn University
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: How can we best take advantage of the growing knowledge and tools in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to design and operate processing and biomanufacturing systems optimally and advance the fundamental understanding of the underlying phenomena for these systems? Unlike many of the native application domains of AI/ML algorithms\, these processes generally yield relatively structured data sets that mask information and are not abundant. Also\, there is significant accumulated know-how regarding these systems. Therefore\, employing AI/ML techniques for these systems requires selecting the appropriate method and customization to incorporate the existing knowledge. \nHybrid modeling combines first-principles models and data-driven models\, which can be based on AI/ML algorithms. Within the hybrid model\, the first principles model implements known process knowledge\, and the data-driven model compensates for the disagreement caused by an incomplete understanding of the process mechanism and enhances the accuracy of the model. This talk will highlight the strengths and challenges of building hybrid models for engineering applications using three seemingly disparate examples: (1) plant optimization for minimizing energy consumption\, (2) accurate predictions of liquid entrainment fraction and its uncertainty\, and (3) modeling differentiation of human-induced pluripotent stem cells to cardiac muscle cells. \n\nSpeaker Bio: Dr. Cremaschi is the Chair\, B. Redd & Susan W. Redd Endowed Eminent Scholar Chair Professor\, and Head of the Cremaschi group in the Department of Chemical Engineering\, Auburn University. Her research focuses on risk management\, optimization\, process synthesis\, machine learning\, and planning under uncertainty. Her research group develops systems analysis and decision support tools for complex systems\, mainly focusing on the biomanufacturing\, pharmaceutical\, and energy industries. She is a recipient of the NSF CAREER award (2011)\, the Zelimir Schmidt Award for Outstanding Researcher (2013)\, and the Senior Research Award for Excellence (2021)\, among others. She is a member of the 2018 Class of Influential Researchers selected by the Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research journal. Her research work has been consistently supported by industrial collaborations in addition to federal agencies. She also serves on the Dow Chemical Company Digital Technology Advisory Board. She earned a Ph.D. from Purdue University and an M.S. and B.S. from Bogazici University (Turkey)\, all in chemical engineering.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Stressors for Doctoral Engineering Students: Constructing a Measure and a Framework for the Inherency of Stress
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Higher education is facing a mental health crisis\; it is well-known that a significant population of doctoral students drop out of their graduate programs and face or develop mental health distress or conditions. While rates of dropout for engineering students may not differ strongly from other disciplines\, engineering students have been suggested to be less likely to seek help from university services for well-being concerns. In this presentation\, I describe a multi-phase study: First\, a set of longitudinal interviews with doctoral engineering students in which participants identified their top stressors and described the experience of those stressors. Next\, I describe the development of the Stressors for Doctoral Students Questionnaire in Engineering (SDSQ-E)\, a novel survey which measures the frequency and severity of these top sources of stress for doctoral engineering students. The SDSQ-E was administered to engineering PhD students as a subset of a large sample of graduate students at two institutions. The SDSQ-E has the potential to predict factors such as anxiety\, depression\, or intention to persist in doctoral programs and the instrument suggests a different set of top stressors for students sampled at different institutions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Automorphisms of the smooth fine curve graph
DESCRIPTION:The smooth fine curve graph of a surface is an analogue of the fine curve graph that only contains smooth curves. It is natural to guess that the automorphism group of the smooth fine curve graph is isomorphic to the diffeomorphism group of the surface. But it has recently been shown that this is not the case. In this talk\, I will give several more examples with increasingly wild behavior and give a characterization of this automorphism group for the particular case of continuously differentiable curves.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar Series - Erosion through heterogeneous rocks sets the stage for allopatric speciation of Appalachian freshwater fishes
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our ongoing Thursday Seminar Series.\n\nAbout this seminar: The mountain ranges of the central and southern United States have long been considered enigmatic\, both for their sustained topographic relief and exceptional levels of freshwater biodiversity. In this talk\, I propose that the erosional exhumation of ancient geologic structures is an important mechanism for explaining the topography and freshwater biodiversity of these post-orogenic landscapes. As ancient geologic structures are exhumed through erosion\, rocks with different chemical and physical properties are exposed at the surface of the landscape. This process does not only influence landscape dynamics\, but also generates opportunities for speciation in freshwater fishes.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IOE 899: Statistical Inference for Markov Chains with Known Structure
DESCRIPTION:About the speaker: Peter W. Glynn is the Thomas Ford Professor in the Department of Management Science and Engineering (MS&E) at Stanford University and also holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of Electrical Engineering. He received his Ph.D in Operations Research from Stanford University in 1982. He then joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin at Madison\, where he held a joint appointment between the Industrial Engineering Department and Mathematics Research Center\, and courtesy appointments in Computer Science and Mathematics. In 1987\, he returned to Stanford\, where he joined the Department of Operations Research. From 1999 to 2005\, he served as Deputy Chair of the Department of Management Science and Engineering\, and was Director of Stanford's Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering from 2006 until 2010. He served as Chair of MS&E from 2011 through 2015. He is a Fellow of INFORMS and a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics\, and was an IMS Medallion Lecturer in 1995\, a Lunteren Lecturer in 2007\, the INFORMS Markov Lecturer in 2014\, an Infosys-ICTS Turing Lecturer in 2019\, and gave a Titan of Simulation talk at the 2019 Winter Simulation Conference. He was co-winner of the Outstanding Publication Awards from the INFORMS Simulation Society in 1993\, 2008\, and 2016\, was a co-winner of the Best (Biannual) Publication Award from the INFORMS Applied Probability Society in 2009\, was the co-winner of the John von Neumann Theory Prize from INFORMS in 2010\, and gave the INFORMS Philip McCord Morse Lecture in 2020. In 2012\, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering\, and in 2021 he received the Lifetime Professional Achievement Award of the INFORMS Simulation Society. He was Founding Editor-in-Chief of Stochastic Systems and served as Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Applied Probability and Advances in Applied Probability from 2016 to 2018. His research interests lie in simulation\, computational probability\, queueing theory\, statistical inference for stochastic processes\, and stochastic modeling. \n\n\nAbstract: In this talk\, we will discuss nonparametric estimation for Markov chains that satisfy stochastic recursions of a known form\, but in which the driving noise has an unknown distribution. We assume that we observe samples of the driving noise. We will argue that such Markov chains/data sets arise naturally within the setting of operations research and management science. We will describe general statistical theory for such Markov chains\, including consistency of “plug-in” estimators\, the influence function\, central limit theorems\, and related computational issues. Such theory allows us to assess how \"input uncertainty\" propagates through to \"output uncertainty\" within the class of stochastic models most relevant to our field. This work is joint with Lin Fan.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe ultimate goal in clinical transplantation is robust and specific host immunological tolerance toward transplanted allogeneic tissue and cells. While systemic immunosuppression regimens have saved lives by enabling long-term allogeneic graft survival\, they come with a host of potentially severe side effects\, including infections and malignancies. In the Weaver lab\, we use biomaterials- and cell therapy-based approaches to eliminate the immune response against allogeneic grafts in a cell transplantation model. This talk will discuss our work developing a hydrogel injection molding encapsulation technique\, and our preliminary efforts to develop a professional tolerogenic cell-based therapy.\nBio:\nJessica D. Weaver is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering at Arizona State University and her research centers on developing translatable cell-based therapies for the treatment of disease\, with a focus on cell therapies to induce tolerance in transplantation and for the treatment of type 1 diabetes. The Weaver lab uses biomaterials and immune engineering approaches with the aim to generate immunosuppression-free transplantation strategies. Dr. Weaver obtained her PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Miami with Cherie L. Stabler prior to completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the Georgia Institute of Technology with Andres J. Garcia\, where she was supported by the NIH ILET2 training grant and a JDRF Postdoctoral Fellowship. Dr. Weaver's lab is currently supported by the Arizona Biomedical Research Commission\, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases\, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease\, and she is the recipient of the 2021 NIH New Innovator Award.\nZoom:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/94337625486

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:The Department of Astronomy 2024-2025 Colloquium Series Presents:
DESCRIPTION:\"Constraining the Life Cycle of Binary Supermassive Black Holes with Multi-Messenger Astrophysics\"\n\nGalaxy mergers are a fundamental foundation for much of astrophysics. Mergers are the main driver of hierarchical structure formation over cosmic time explaining the observed demographic changes in galaxies with redshift. Our understanding of the contributions of mergers to these processes\, including the stellar mass growth of galaxies\, is only as good as our understanding of the merger process. Given that every galaxy appears to host a central supermassive black hole (SMBH)\, we expect that each merger will result in the formation of a binary SMBH. While galaxy mergers are the birth place of these systems\, the nanoHertz gravitational wave background\, recently uncovered in pulsar timing array (PTA) data\, is the end stage. Understanding the link between the cosmic binary SMBH population and the gravitational radiation detected by PTAs is crucial to our community's capability of making meaningful scientific statements using PTA observations.\n\nIn this talk\, I will cover the entire life cycle of binary SMBHs and my on-going work to stitch various EM & GW observations together to inform many critical open questions in astronomy. I’ll start by covering new work updating the galaxy merger rate in the local Universe. Then I’ll explore different approaches for populating merging galaxies with co-evolving SMBHs in semi-analytic models\, highlighting recent results that are in line with the emerging consensus that SMBHs may have been more massive at higher redshifts than previously thought. I’ll also explain PTA observations of the GWB and how this critical detection allows us to constrain the binary SMBH evolution timescale for the first time. Finally\, I’ll end by laying out the road forward as we enter an exciting new era for low-frequency multi-messenger astrophysics.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: Dams that Save: Law\, Beavers\, and the Making of the Yukon River
DESCRIPTION:This talk retells the social and environmental history of the Klondike Gold Rush through stories from two kinds of beavers: the furry 50-pound dam-building kind\, and Beaver—a critical figure in the origin stories and legal ideas of the Han Hwech'in\, the Indigenous people of the Klondike region—to ask how thinking with such sources of theory and interpretation can expand the historical narratives we tell about change\, law\, and the relationship between human beings and the wider\, animate world.\n\nBathsheba Demuth is writer and environmental historian specializing in the lands and seas of the Russian and North American Arctic. From the archive to the dog sled\, her research addresses how ecologies and people change each other. Her first book\, Floating Coast: An Environmental History of the Bering Strait\, won multiple awards and was named a best book by NPR and Nature\, among others. Her writing has appeared in publications from The New Yorker and Granta to The American Historical Review and The Best American Science and Nature Writing. When not in the north\, she lives in Rhode Island\, where she is currently the Dean’s Associate Professor of History and Environment and Society at Brown University.\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Imaging and control of cellular chemistry with high spatiotemporal precision
DESCRIPTION:An in-depth understanding of cell functions and behaviors requires the ability to visualize and control biological processes in living cells. Optical imaging techniques have seen remarkable advancements over the past several decades\, allowing scientists to achieve high-resolution mapping of physical and chemical properties within biological systems. Coherent Raman scattering (CRS) microscopy\, in particular\, stands out for its capability to image chemical compositions such as lipids within biological environments. The first part of this talk will focus on the recent technological advancements and biological discoveries made by my research group using CRS and fluorescence microscopy.\nBeyond imaging\, our research has pioneered the development of real-time precision opto-control (RPOC)\, a cutting-edge technology designed to precisely manipulate biological processes with high spatial and temporal accuracy. RPOC represents a significant advancement in optical control\, offering unmatched levels of precision\, speed\, selectivity\, and adaptability. This technology enables a wide array of capabilities\, including the targeted generation of reactive oxygen species\, drug activation within specific cellular compartments\, precise photo-uncaging\, regulation of cell division and survival\, and the selective elimination of unwanted cells in a population. In the second part of this presentation\, I will delve into the history\, underlying principles\, and recent advancements of RPOC technology\, illustrating its applications in biological and medical research through various examples.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Rep Stability/Comm Alg Seminar: Bounds for the F-Signature of Determinantal Hypersurfaces
DESCRIPTION:The F-signature for strongly F-regular rings is known to be a value between 0 and 1\, however\, in the majority of cases not much is known beyond that. In particular\, even the classical case of determinantal hypersurfaces\, the F-signature has not been computed beyond the size 2 minors. In this talk\, by using Grobner degeneration to a toric hypersurface\, we compute a lower bound for the the F-signature of determinant hypersurfaces. We also provide an upper bound. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:High Stakes Culture Series
DESCRIPTION:In the last few years\, a series of “culture wars” have been ignited across the country. Activists from all points of the political spectrum are turning to beloved cultural objects to stake a claim for their differing beliefs in a politically fraught moment. \n \nWhat is at stake in these conflicts? High Stakes Culture is a series that brings humanities perspectives to bear on current debates. Please join us for two events this fall (Oct. 10 & 24) as we ask: how and why does culture matter so much now?\n\nToday:\nThinking Through Election Overload: Olympic Patriotism V. Election Patriotism?\" with Kate Wroblewski (History)\, Silke Weineck (German\, Comparative Literature)\, Ketra Armstrong (Women’s and Gender Studies\, Kinesiology) and moderator Matthew Countryman (Afroamerican & African Studies\, Music).\n\nRemember the Olympics? Just a few months ago\, Americans from across the political spectrum came together in a three-week ritual of raucous flag waving\, chanting\, and cheering. But those good feelings barely survived the Closing Ceremonies. Also immediately after the Olympics\, a wave of memes announced the \"patriotism leaving my body.\" In an election season marked by sharp division that sometimes feels like a flag-waving competition\, please join us for a conversation about belonging in a civil society\, about how democracies work\, about election division and about sports and patriotism. \n \nWe’ll ask questions like:\nWhat is the relationship between sports and patriotism?\nWhat does it mean to feel part of something bigger than yourself? \nWhen is patriotism a good thing and when is it not a good thing?

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Penny Stamps Speaker Series - Radical Conversations
DESCRIPTION:In a time of profound division\, embracing diverse perspectives becomes a catalyst for meaningful change. How do we transcend boundaries to cultivate an environment committed to fostering honest\, caring\, and courageous conversations? How are artists responding to these questions through their work? Guided by the framing of U-M Professor Jenna Bednar\, artists Pablo Helguera\, Philippa Hughes\, and Lexa Walsh will delve into the transition from transactional to relational public policy\, nurturing our societal fabric with pillars of community\, sustainability\, dignity\, and beyond. Together\, they will reflect on the essence of American identity and envision pathways to a flourishing society.\n\nJenna Bednar is a political scientist whose work explores themes of civic engagement\, institutional design\, and the interplay between individual agency and systemic structures. Her research is on the analysis of institutions\, focusing on the theoretical underpinnings of the stability of federal states. Bednar is the faculty director of UMICH Votes and Democratic Engagement\, a non-partisan campus coalition whose mission is to improve the accessibility of voting\, foster the confidence necessary to navigate the voting process successfully\, and help students understand why their votes matter. \n\nPablo Helguera\, a Mexico City-born artist now based in New York\, explores a wide array of mediums including installation\, sculpture\, photography\, drawing\, and performance\, often intertwining themes of history\, pedagogy\, sociolinguistics\, ethnography\, memory\, and the absurd. His work spans from lectures and museum installations to musical performances and written fiction. Notably\, his project \"The School of Panamerican Unrest\" exemplifies his blend of art and education\, involving a 20\,000-mile journey from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. Helguera has exhibited and performed globally\, from the Museum of Modern Art to the Museo de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid\, and has been recognized with a Guggenheim fellowship and grants from institutions like Creative Capital and Art Matters. He is author of several books and writes a regular column titled \"Beautiful Eccentrics.\"\n\nPhilippa Hughes' artistic endeavors celebrate human connection and dialogue\, creating spaces that encourage diverse communities to engage in transformative experiences. Her installations\, events\, and curated environments foster environments where honesty\, empathy\, and courage can flourish. Hughes draws inspiration from everyday interactions and collective storytelling. By challenging boundaries and amplifying marginalized voices\, her work provokes thought\, sparks dialogue\, and inspires action towards a more inclusive and compassionate society. She is currently Visiting Artist For Art &amp\; Civic Engagement at UMMA presenting the exhibition and social engagement platform “Hey\, We Need To Talk!”. \n\nLexa Walsh uses her background in both sculpture and social practice to make site specific projects\, exhibitions\, publications and objects\, using an array of materials and employing social engagement\, institutional critique\, and radical hospitality. She creates platforms for interaction across hierarchies\, representing multiple voices and inventing new ways of belonging. Walsh has exhibited and performed internationally for over 25 years at institutions large and small\, and in public spaces.\n\nPresented in partnership with Year of Democracy\, Civic Empowerment & Global Engagement and UMMA and as part of VOTE2024 and the Creative Campus Voting Project through UMICH Votes. This project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Digging Deeper and FAST Lecture | Reassessing Agriculture\, Diet\, and (Mal)Nutrition at Greco-Roman Karanis: New Insights from the AGROS Project
DESCRIPTION:This lecture provides an overview of some of the recent results from diverse chemical analyses on the Karanis archaeobotanical collection at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology in the context of the AGROS project— “Agriculture\, Diet and Nutrition in Greco-Roman Egypt. Reassessing Ancient Sustenance\, Food Processing and (Mal)Nutrition”—funded by the Belgian Excellence of Science program. \n\nThe lecture aims to illustrate the value and potential of these chemical approaches by focusing on three brief case studies from the AGROS project. The first shows how plant stable isotope analysis can help us model agricultural practices (such as manuring and irrigation) and reconstruct environmental conditions at Karanis. The second case study provides insights into what we can learn from the differences between the (anti)nutritional properties of modern and ancient crops following analyses of the Karanis collection. Lastly\, the third case study focuses on the project’s interdisciplinary efforts to recreate and nutritionally assess ancient recipes\, food processing practices\, and foodstuffs. Throughout the presentation\, we will also consider the potential for the modern application of the project’s results. \n\nFrits Heinrich is assistant professor of ancient\, agricultural\, and food history at the research groups Interdisciplinary Historical Food Studies (FOST) and Industrial Microbiology and Food Biotechnology (IMDO) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussels (VUB). SUMMARY:Presentation:Celestial Heritage: Latin America's Skies and Women in Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:The Judy & Stanley Frankel Detroit Observatory is excited to host U-M Astronomy's Professor Nuria Calvet and Professor Mario Mateo for two wonderful talks on Latin American astronomers and observatories. The talks will begin at 7:00 PM and will last 1 hour in total. Afterwards\, attendees will be welcome to tour the original 1854 Detroit Observatory and observe the night sky through its historic telescope.\n\nLos Ojos sobre el Cielo: Latin American Astronomical Facilities from Ancient times to the Modern World - Professor Mario Mateo\nI will provide a whirlwind tour of Latin American Astronomical Facilities that span the eras of pre-Columbian meso-American cultures\, to the present time. The more ancient sites were used by ancient societies to gauge the passage of time to remarkable accuracy. More modern astronomical centers in Latin America provided some of the key insights on the immense scale of our Universe while exploring some of the many cosmic structures best studied from the Southern Hemisphere. Modern facilities continue to build on this legacy through Latin American astronomical facilities--many among the finest in the world--to carry out detailed explorations of a wide range of exotic cosmic phenomena revealed by modern astrophysical studies.\n\nReflections on Life Lessons with a Latina Astronomer - Professor Nuria Calvet\nMany years ago\, I became a physicist with a major in astronomy in Latin America. In my long career as a female astronomer in both Latin America and the U.S.\, I have witnessed many changes and significant growth. In my talk\, I will tell you about the pioneering female astronomers in Argentina\, Brasil\, Mexico\, Venezuela and other countries in Latin America\, “las astrónomas” many of whom were my mentors and friends. I will share how they helped create strong communities in their countries where young women felt that astronomy was for everyone and believed they could do beautiful science. Today\, there are so many astrónomas that it is difficult to name them all\, but I will try to give you a glimpse into their successes.\n\nTelescope observing is weather dependent. Registration is required.
