SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\n*The exhibition is cosponsored by the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Steve Glazer Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Steve Glazer earned his BFA in art with a concentration in ceramics from Eastern Michigan University\, a master’s degree in art from Central Michigan University\, and MFA in fine arts and ceramics from Indiana State University. Since 2004\, Glazer has been lead faculty and head of ceramics at Henry Ford College\, and former faculty of Concord College (WV) and North Dakota State University. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the country.\n\nThroughout his adult life the art of Steve Glazer has been done as a response to his environment. From a series of shadow box type pieces containing life like ceramic fish while teaching at a Catholic woman’s college\, to building 8’ tall ceramic “skyscrapers” that barely fit into the display spaces while teaching in North Dakota\, where no skyscrapers exist\, and then creating installations commenting on living in Appalachia while teaching in southern West Virginia. After returning home to Detroit\, Glazer began his griot series\, the “Motor City Griot Society” masks\, the faces of the superheroes that will save Detroit\, and more recently the “Motor City Griot Patrol” creatures that will protect the city of Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Susan Moran Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Susan Moran’s work is inspired by the natural world and our place in it. She collects and arranges images\, builds and subtracts\, and uses processes that suit the concepts and gives the pieces a reason for existing as textiles. Simultaneously she strives to make the medium influence the outcome in such a way that cloth and image meld together. Moran uses silkscreen\, shibori\, and stitching to embed images from her daily walks into the fabric. it's important that the work builds slowly\, involving meditative processes that connect her to the cloth and the source of the design.\n\nGallery hours: Monday-Friday\, 9 am to 5pm or by appointment serrag@med.umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Butch Closet
DESCRIPTION:In the multi-media installation *The Butch Closet*\, artist Phranc illustrates her life stories as a queer artist\, Jewish lesbian folk singer\, and \"cardboard cobbler.\" By meticulously re-creating personal objects and pieces of clothing out of paper\, cardboard\, thread\, and paint\, she revisits her own history\, contextualizing her experiences as an iconic performer\, and maker\, constructing\, reconstructing\, and re-imagining her image against a larger historical context of second-wave feminism and queer activism. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet* is the second iteration of the project\, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works. As part of the installation\, visitors can peer into a closet built in the center of the gallery designed by the artist. Conceptually\, the space shifts from inside to outside\, public and private\, and explores themes of visibility and that which remains inaccessible or unseen.\n\nAbout the artist:\nPhranc is a jewish lesbian folksinger and queer artist who uses song\, painting and sculpture to champion personal identities and illustrate the struggle\, survival\, and victory of the queer individual. An internationally acclaimed and award winning performer. Phranc’s work integrates humor and a butch lesbian aesthetic. Her current project\, Phranc Talk: The Butch Closet\, is a multi-media memoir that spans her 40-year career. Phranc lives and works in Santa Monica\, California and Vancouver\, British Columbia.\n\n*Phranc is the 2024 Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.*

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Kelly Church & Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: September 13 – December 7\, 2024Opening Reception: September 19\, 2024\n\nKelly Church &amp\; Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue is a major exhibition that centers the subjectivities of two contemporary Indigenous artists whose practices have sustained and bolstered the relevance of the age-old Anishinaabe practice of black ash basket-making in the 21st century. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter\, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors)\, young folx\, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories\, as well as those of survivance and resilience\, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps\, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA\, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing\, thinking\, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus\, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women’s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers\, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on\, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole\, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works\, including 15-17 new works. Together\, the exhibition offers an incisive critique of the colonial\, racist paradigm of systemic erasure and assimilation that continues to this day\, with the ongoing crises of missing and murdered Indigenous women\, culture wars\, and climate change that threaten Indigenous ways of living\, sustenance\, and making. \nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra with Curatorial Assistant Zoi Crampton.\nStamps Gallery is grateful to Michigan Humanities and U-M Arts Initiative for generously supporting the exhibition and programs.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EIHS Workshop: Scales of Movement: Beyond Humans and the Problem of Agency
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by Bathsheba Demuth's work\, this workshop builds a broader environmental and ecological context around narratives of home\, exile\, and migration: one that shows humans as well as states operating in a larger\, multifaceted ecology of agency. Our four panelists will explore the movement and management of dolphins\, minerals\, cattle\, and wheat as they trace the ways in which the material and the beyond-human circumscribe the agencies of humans as they enact their own. As they go beyond the “human” in our search for historical actors\, this panel will also consider how this shift in understanding who is able to exert historical agency may also necessitate a shift in scale and methodology. \n\nPanelists:\nGrant Halliday (Graduate Student\, History\, University of Michigan)\nIsmael Pardo (Graduate Student\, History\, University of Michigan)\nQingyi Zeng (Graduate Student\, Comparative Literature\, University of Michigan)\nYipeng Zhou (Graduate Student\, History\, University of Michigan)\nDouglas Northrop (Professor\; History\, Middle East Studies\; University of Michigan\; moderator)\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Friday Lecture Series | Silence\, Power\, and Making Do: Keywords for Philippine Cinema’s Archival Afterlives
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/Rmy7D\n\nThe contours of Philippine cinema’s archival crises are alarming: of over 350 films produced before the outbreak of World War II\, only five Filipino films from the American colonial period survive. The dupe negative of the last surviving Filipino film on nitrate\, Ibong Adarna (Adarna Bird\, dir. Vicente Salumbides and Manuel Conde\, 1941)\, was destroyed shortly after its 2005 restoration.\n \n Drawing on postcolonial historiography\, archival theory\, and the on-the-ground realities of the Philippines’ decentralized audiovisual archive advocacy\, this talk examines three issues that emerge as keywords for the crises of moving image preservation in the Philippines. First\, archival silences\, which comprise not only the “lost films” of Philippine cinema but also the absences that are constitutive of the production of historical narratives. Second\, archival power\, which names dynamics of inclusion/exclusion in the production of historical narratives\, as well as archival practices of appraisal that institutionalize a minute percentage of extant records. Finally\, activism\, advocacy\, and “making do” — creative workarounds that have emerged to ensure the archival survival of Philippine cinema — are also expressions of archival power. In response to my research request for access copies of 16mm propaganda films made in 1971-72\, on the eve of the Marcos dictatorship’s declaration of Martial Law (PFM’s Declaration of Martial Law and From a Season of Strife)\, a handful of archivists from the Philippine Information Agency (PIA)\, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and the Society of Filipino Archivists for Film (SOFIA) collaborated to produce rushed digital access copies of these films in 2015. The result of our collective efforts were undoubtedly poor images. Yet the makeshift digitization itself exemplified non-idealized archival practices of making do (paggawa ng paraan) that marshal meager resources to buy time and keep things going. Given that the histories of prior state film archives’ collapse caution against the costs of inaction\, perseverance and making-do in order to ensure access are striking traits of Philippine archiving cultures called-forth by conditions of archival fragility.\n \n Bliss Cua Lim is Professor of Cinema Studies at the University of Toronto. Her first book\, \"Translating Time: Cinema\, the Fantastic and Temporal Critique\"\, was published by Duke University Press in 2009\, with a Philippine edition by Ateneo de Manila University Press released in 2011. Bliss is a member of the Editorial Collective of the journal\, Camera Obscura: Feminism\, Culture\, and Media Studies and she also serves on the Advisory Boards of \"Plaridel: A Philippine Journal of Communication\" and \"Pelikula: A Journal of Philippine Cinema\". Her new book\, \"The Archival Afterlives of Philippine Cinema\"\, recently published by Duke University Press\, analyzes the crisis-ridden history of film archiving in the Philippines.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at cseas@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Role of Proboscideans in Late Pleistocene Food Systems of North America
DESCRIPTION:From sites located across North America we know that proboscideans (mammoth\, mastodons\, and their kin) were butchered and used by Pleistocene foragers\, but what role did these animals play in the food systems of these communities? The identification and excavation of a domestic camp associated with butchered mammoth remains at the La Prele Mammoth site (Wyoming) allows us to reach past typical questions focusing on subsistence and technology into larger inquiries about Pleistocene foragers including understanding social organization\, cooperation\, and group mobility. New research incorporating these questions at additional Ice Age sites can help us to better understand how people used proboscideans as a food resource\, their importance in past lifeways\, and what changed when they went extinct. This presentation will discuss how we can reach beyond butchery in the Pleistocene to better understand the relationship between foragers and their environment.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Principled Mechanism Design with Evidence
DESCRIPTION:We cast mechanism design with evidence in the framework of Myerson (1982)\, whereby his generalized revelation principle directly applies and yields standard no- tions of incentive compatible direct mechanisms. Their specific nature depends on whether the agent’s (verifiable) presentation of evidence is contractually controllable\, however. For deterministic implementation\, we show that\, in general\, such control has value\, and we offer two independent conditions under which this value vanishes\, one on evidence (WET) and another on preferences (TIWO). Allowing for fully stochastic mechanisms\, we also show how randomization generally has value and clarify to what extent this value vanishes under the common assumption of evidentiary normality (NOR). While\, in general\, the value of control extends to stochastic implementation\, neither control nor randomization have any value if NOR holds together with WET or TIWO.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: A deterministic PDE perspective on diffusion models
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Generative modeling represents one of the most striking examples of the successes of modern machine learning. In generative modeling\, one seeks to artificially generate new data that belongs to given input class. For instance\, generating new faces from a database of celebrity faces. Mathematically\, this can be posed as finding a map that pushes a simple concrete probability distribution\, such as a standard Gaussian\, to a complicated abstract distribution that is only known through examples. \n\nCurrently\, one of the most popular paradigms in generative modeling is diffusion modeling\, where the map is constructed by reversing the flow of a diffusion equation applied to the example set. The standard approach in the literature focuses on flowing along a Fokker-Planck equation (i.e. a heat equation with a drift term) and requires stochasticity in the backwards flow to prove convergence rates. In this talk\, I will discuss some advantages of flowing along a more general class of diffusion equations and prove convergence rates when the backwards flow is deterministic. \n\nContact: Selim Esedoglu.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Double orthodontic polynomials (Combinatorics seminar)
DESCRIPTION:Motivated by our search for a representation-theoretic avatar of double Grothendieck polynomials G_w(x\;y)\, we give a new formula for G_w(x\;y) based on Magyar's orthodontia algorithm for diagrams. We obtain a similar formula for double Schubert polynomials S_w(x\;y)\, and a curious positivity result: For vexillary permutations w\, the polynomial x_1^n \dots x_n^n S_w(x_n^{-1}\, \dots\, x_1^{-1}\; 1\, \dots\, 1) is a graded nonnegative sum of Lascoux polynomials. This is joint work with Avery St. Dizier.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | String theory and experiment: A new hope
DESCRIPTION:**PLEASE NOTE\, THIS SEMINAR HAS BEEN CANCELLED**\n\nWe argue that a new type of strings appears in some time-dependent cases. Despite being light these strings cannot be approximated by particles. As a result\, they can cause effects that distinguish string theory from particle physics. We attempt to describe some of these effects

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Reinhard Boehler\, Oak Ridge National Lab
DESCRIPTION:Over 50 years ago\, Kennedy and Higgins argued that with the lack of knowledge of the adiabatic gradient in the Earth and the slope of the melting curve of iron\, the outer core could be solid and the inner core liquid. Intense experimental and theoretical activities in this field\, however\, have not fully solved this problem but have rather resulted in large discrepancies. I will review some of my own work related to both the temperature profile in the Earth and the melting curve of iron and will describe the experimental difficulties for measuring high-pressure/ high-temperature phase diagrams and thermal properties of the relevant materials.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GEOMETRY SEMINAR Equidistribution of polynomially bounded o-minimal trajectories on homogeneous spaces
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will discuss my joint work with Michael Bersudsky and Hao Xing extending Ratner’s theorem on equidistribution of individual orbits of unipotent flows on finite volume homogeneous spaces of Lie groups to trajectories of non-contracting curves definable in a polynomially bounded o-minimal structure.\nTo be precise\, let φ : [0\, ∞) → SL(n\, R) be a continuous map whose coordinate functions are definable in a polynomially bounded o-minimal structure\; for example\, rational functions. Suppose that φ is non-contracting: \n\n∀ linearly independent v1\,...\,vk ∈ R^n\, φ(t) (v1∧···∧vk)̸→0 as t→∞.\n\nThen\, there exists a unique smallest subgroup H_φ of SL(n\, R) generated by unipotent one-parameter subgroups such that \nφ(t) H_φ → g_0 H_φ in SL(n\, R)/H_φ as t→∞ for some g_0 ∈SL(n\,R). \n\nFor any Lie subgroup G of SL(n\,R) such that φ([0\,∞)) ⊂ G\, we have H_φ ⊂G. For any lattice Γ in G and x∈G/Γ\, the trajectory { φ(t)x:t≥0} gets equidistributed with respect to the measure g_0.μ_F_x\, where H_φ x = Fx for a closed connected subgroup F of G and μ_F_x is the unique F-invariant probability measure on Fx.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Linguistics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:This event will be hybrid held in East Hall 4448 & Zoom.\n\nTITLE\nCategories and gradience in intonation: Empirical investigations in sound and meaning\n\nABSTRACT\nDifferences in intonation among languages and dialects are readily noticed but less easily described. What is the ‘shape’ of phrasal pitch contours\, analyzed in terms of their component phonological features or in acoustic F0 measurements? How does intonation function to mark the structure of phrases and larger discourse units\, or distinctions in semantic or pragmatic meaning? The goal of a linguistic theory of intonation is to establish a framework in which the form and functions of intonation can be analyzed and compared across languages and speakers. This is a surprisingly difficult task. Analyzing the function of intonational expressions calls for preliminary decisions about segmentation\, measurement and encoding– which interval(s) of a continuous pitch signal are associated with a particular meaning or structure\, which aspects of the dynamic F0 signal encode that function\, and what are the features of encoding? Even for English\, arguably one of the most studied intonation systems\, there is ongoing debate over these very questions\, resulting in a knowledge bottleneck that stymies scientific progress on intonation and its communicative function.\nIn this talk I report on my recent work addressing this central challenge for American English: What are the characteristics of phrasal pitch patterns that are reliably perceived and produced as distinct and interpreted differently\, by speakers of the language? I discuss findings from parallel streams of research in my lab investigating intonational form and its pragmatic function. Part I (work with Jeremy Steffman) relates a series of studies that examine intonational form through imitations 16 intonational “tunes” of English\, under varying task conditions that tap memory representations of model tunes presented auditorily. Analyses of dynamic F0 patterns from five experiments converge on finding a robust\, primary distinction between high-rising and low-falling tunes\, and smaller\, secondary F0 distinctions within both classes. Part II (work with Thomas Sostarics) focuses on the pragmatic function of tunes\, presenting findings from one experiment testing asking/telling interpretations for stimuli from a two-dimensional Rising-Falling continuum\, and another examining the facilitation of scalar inference as a function of tune shape (Falling\, Rise-Fall-Rise\, with varying pitch accents). Findings from both experiments point again to a primary dichotomy between high-rising and low-falling tunes\, with secondary distinctions in meaning corresponding to F0 shape variation within the two primary tune classes. Implications of these joint findings are discussed for a theory of categorical and gradient associations of intonational form and function.

Marwan moved from his hometown Beirut to London in 2011 to pursue a master’s degree in Graphic Design\, before joining renowned design agency Barnbrook. He later founded his own studio in 2020.\n\nAbout The Queer Arab Glossary\nWhen conventional language does not equip us with the tools to speak about ourselves\, we create our own. Slang expresses words and feelings that break down boundaries. It is a form of protest and fills in the gaps. The Queer Arab Glossary is the first published collection of Arabic LGBTQ+ slang. This bold guide captures the lexicon of the queer Arab community in all its differences\, quirks and felicities. Featuring fascinating facts and anecdotes\, it contains more than 300 terms in both English and Arabic\, ranging from the humorous to the harrowing\, serious to tongue-in-cheek\, pejorative to endearing. Here\, leading queer Arab artists\, academics\, activists and writers offer insightful essays situating this groundbreaking glossary in a modern social and political context.\n\nSponsors: Institute for Research on Women and Gender\, Women's and Gender Studies\, Global Islamic Studies Center\, Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion\, University of Michigan Library\, Arab and Muslim American Studies

SUMMARY:Performance:Lady Lamb
DESCRIPTION:From her early days\, staying late after-hours at her video rental store job in Maine to record songs\, to co-producing and arranging her four studio records\, Aly Spaltro has remained focused on music that connects\, empowers and builds community. She built her fanship the old-fashioned way\, getting in front of audiences and projecting her poetic confessionals\, silencing rowdy crowds with an a cappella opening song in the center of a dark stage. Spaltro was quick to develop a reputation as a breakout star in New England\, and then expanded slowly outwards\, moving to New York at twenty to continue work on the songs that would become Ripely Pine. Her voice has never wavered\, has grown more honest and open with time\, and anyone witnessing the long lines of fans seeking signatures after her performances can see how her work has impacted fans. Her live shows are revelations\, a further deep dive into what makes Ripely Pine such a mainstay.\n\nSpaltro is celebrating ten years of Ripely Pine with the release of a 5xLP Box Set\, IN THE MAMMOTH NOTHING OF THE NIGHT out August 18 on Ba Da Bing Records. With the original songs remastered\, as well as reams of additional material produced and arranged by Spaltro and mixed by original co- producer Nadim Issa\, IN THE MAMMOTH NOTHING OF THE NIGHT captures the time\, mood\, art and ambition of Aly Spaltro in her early twenties\, who had already accumulated years of playing and self-recording experience before laying down tracks for this giant of a debut.\n\n“I wrote some of these songs when I was 18\, learning how to play the instruments and record with my digital 8-track along the way\,” Spaltro says\, reflecting on the time. She talks about IN THE MAMMOTH NOTHING OF THE NIGHT with a sense of a mission. “These tracks have haunted me\, because they haven’t had a home for all these years. I found all these alternate track listings in my notebooks. Any of them could have ended up on the record\,” Spaltro says. “This box set is a way to honor that whole time\, the beginning of the path of my life. Releasing this project feels like just that\; I’m able to look back on where I’ve come from\, and then gently close that door behind me and keep moving\, keep growing.”
