SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Steve Glazer Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Steve Glazer earned his BFA in art with a concentration in ceramics from Eastern Michigan University\, a master’s degree in art from Central Michigan University\, and MFA in fine arts and ceramics from Indiana State University. Since 2004\, Glazer has been lead faculty and head of ceramics at Henry Ford College\, and former faculty of Concord College (WV) and North Dakota State University. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the country.\n\nThroughout his adult life the art of Steve Glazer has been done as a response to his environment. From a series of shadow box type pieces containing life like ceramic fish while teaching at a Catholic woman’s college\, to building 8’ tall ceramic “skyscrapers” that barely fit into the display spaces while teaching in North Dakota\, where no skyscrapers exist\, and then creating installations commenting on living in Appalachia while teaching in southern West Virginia. After returning home to Detroit\, Glazer began his griot series\, the “Motor City Griot Society” masks\, the faces of the superheroes that will save Detroit\, and more recently the “Motor City Griot Patrol” creatures that will protect the city of Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Susan Moran Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Susan Moran’s work is inspired by the natural world and our place in it. She collects and arranges images\, builds and subtracts\, and uses processes that suit the concepts and gives the pieces a reason for existing as textiles. Simultaneously she strives to make the medium influence the outcome in such a way that cloth and image meld together. Moran uses silkscreen\, shibori\, and stitching to embed images from her daily walks into the fabric. it's important that the work builds slowly\, involving meditative processes that connect her to the cloth and the source of the design.\n\nGallery hours: Monday-Friday\, 9 am to 5pm or by appointment serrag@med.umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Butch Closet
DESCRIPTION:In the multi-media installation *The Butch Closet*\, artist Phranc illustrates her life stories as a queer artist\, Jewish lesbian folk singer\, and \"cardboard cobbler.\" By meticulously re-creating personal objects and pieces of clothing out of paper\, cardboard\, thread\, and paint\, she revisits her own history\, contextualizing her experiences as an iconic performer\, and maker\, constructing\, reconstructing\, and re-imagining her image against a larger historical context of second-wave feminism and queer activism. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet* is the second iteration of the project\, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works. As part of the installation\, visitors can peer into a closet built in the center of the gallery designed by the artist. Conceptually\, the space shifts from inside to outside\, public and private\, and explores themes of visibility and that which remains inaccessible or unseen.\n\nAbout the artist:\nPhranc is a jewish lesbian folksinger and queer artist who uses song\, painting and sculpture to champion personal identities and illustrate the struggle\, survival\, and victory of the queer individual. An internationally acclaimed and award winning performer. Phranc’s work integrates humor and a butch lesbian aesthetic. Her current project\, Phranc Talk: The Butch Closet\, is a multi-media memoir that spans her 40-year career. Phranc lives and works in Santa Monica\, California and Vancouver\, British Columbia.\n\n*Phranc is the 2024 Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.*

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Webinar: Community Building through Collaborative Science: Evolution of the Mangrove Coast Collaborative
DESCRIPTION:The Mangrove Coast Collaborative (MCC) project (2020 – 2024) began in the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria (September 2017). Jobos Bay and Rookery Bay NERRs jointly recognized the need to understand and enhance the resilience of their mangrove ecosystems and the surrounding communities in southeastern Puerto Rico and southwest Florida\, respectively. Through a multi-disciplinary approach spanning four research themes – time-series mapping\, ecosystem assessment\, ecosystem services modeling\, and management options – the MCC investigated the loss and recovery of mangroves\, the relationships between drivers of hurricane impact and recovery\, the effects to ecosystem services\, and the ways that managers have made information-based decisions. Using co-production methods\, the project team developed and shared products at a recent regional Mangrove and Management Forum that brought together a newly coalescing community of mangrove scientists and managers in the southeastern US and Caribbean.\nIn this webinar\, the project team will describe how the mangrove science-to-management community developed as an integral part of the MCC and will share an overview of how the ongoing results of the MCC have responded to the needs of this growing community.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic Geometry Seminar (note special day and location): Ample vector bundles and moduli of tame stacks
DESCRIPTION:Ample line bundles on schemes have many equivalent characterizations\, but one key feature is that they can be used to embed the base scheme into a projective space. I will present two natural definitions of an ample vector bundle on a stack\, not clearly equivalent\, one generalizing a cohomological property and the other generalizing the embedding property of ample line bundles. Using the latter\, and extending work of Kresch\, I will explain how an ample vector bundle on a tame stack induces an embedding into [V^s/GL_r] where V^s is the twisted affine GIT stable locus in some polynomial representation V of GL_r. An application is the construction of moduli of stacks with ample vector bundle and in particular a very general stack of tame stacky curves. This is joint with Daniel Bragg and Martin Olsson.

SUMMARY:Performance:Oliver Hazard with special guest Scott Mulvahill
DESCRIPTION:The story of Waterville\, OH indie-folk trio Oliver Hazard - Michael Belazis (vocals\, guitar) and Devin East (vocals\, guitar)\, joined by Nate Miner (keys\, vocals) - is the digital age’s version of classic band mythmaking. One member of the band came home to Ohio after leading camping trips in California and decided to make an album with two childhood friends. They won a Facebook raffle to record one song at a studio. Instead\, they played their whole album straight through once\, resulting in their debut LP 34 N River (2018). The Fader called the album a “folk-pop masterpiece” and the band was booked at Bonnaroo and Mountain Jam shortly thereafter. In 2019\, the band released their 6 track EP\, The Flood\, which Billboard called a “souvenir.” This brings the band to their sophomore\, self-titled album (July 2023)\, featuring music from the band’s recent Northern Lights EP\, plus five additional songs.\n\nhttps://www.olihazard.com/
