SUMMARY:Exercise / Fitness:2024 Purple Run
DESCRIPTION:The Annual Purple Run is an exciting collaboration between the University of Michigan Police Department\, the Ann Arbor Police Department\, the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office\, and SafeHouse Center to bring our community together while highlighting the prevalence of Domestic Violence. In Washtenaw County\, law enforcement and advocates work very closely with one another and\, whether it is on active cases or community events\, we are actively engaged in protecting and safe-guarding the public.\n\nThe proceeds raised during this 5k fun run benefit SafeHouse Center\, which is an organization within Washtenaw County that is working to build a community free of domestic violence and sexual assault. SafeHouse Center provides support for those impacted by domestic violence or sexual assault by providing free and confidential services for any person victimized that lives or works in Washtenaw County. Their services include emergency shelter for those in danger of being hurt or killed\, counseling\, legal advocacy\, support groups\, and especially\, hope. \n\nThe Purple Run is much more than a fundraiser. Our goal is to raise awareness about Domestic Violence and to help the community recognize this issue affects all of us. There is strength in numbers\, and we are so excited that you want to join us and make a statement to survivors that there is support in our community.\n\nEvery 60 seconds\, 20 people are subject to inter-partner violence. Let’s work together to bring this number down! We’re running domestic violence out of town.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Performance:Ulysses | Elevator Repair Service
DESCRIPTION:James Joyce’s Ulysses has fascinated\, perplexed\, scandalized\, and even defeated readers for over a century.\n\nChronicling the experiences of three Dubliners over the course of a single ordinary day in June 1904\, the novel captures the chaotic and fragmented nature of human consciousness. Modeled after Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey\, Ulysses is the latest project by the New York City-based theater company Elevator Repair Service\, perhaps best known for Gatz\, its award-winning verbatim staging of the entire text of The Great Gatsby.\n\nBuilding on a rich history of staging modernist texts\, Elevator Repair Service takes on this mammoth work of 21st-century literature (in an abridged version!) for their UMS debut. Seven performers sit down for a sober reading but soon find themselves guzzling pints\, getting in brawls\, and committing debaucheries as they careen on a fast-forward tour through Joyce’s funhouse of styles. With madcap antics and a densely layered sound design\, Elevator Repair Service presents an eclectic sampling from Joyce’s life-affirming masterpiece.

SUMMARY:Performance:Carbon Leaf
DESCRIPTION:High-energy rock\, folk\, Celtic\, bluegrass\, Americana and more!\n\nCarbon Leaf’s fifteenth studio album\, Time is the Playground\, is both a call to action and an embrace of the moment. Marrying nostalgic storytelling to nuanced\, folk-infused indie rock\, the Richmond\, Virginia band embroiders heartfelt melody and harmony with acoustic and electric instrumentation to create a 12-song rumination on time\, love and personal growth that’s equal parts urgent epiphany and contented exhalation.\n\nOriginally formed as a college cover band in 1992 and with over 3\,500 famously enthused live shows together\, Carbon Leaf helped to define the aughts indie rock that they ultimately outgrew and outlasted. They first earned national recognition with “The Boxer\,” a song that won the American Music Awards 2002 New Music Award and made Carbon Leaf the first unsigned band to perform before millions on the AMAs.\n\n“The Boxer” entered regular radio rotation\, Carbon Leaf’s tours grew bigger and better\, and within a couple of years they quit their day jobs and inked a record deal. The band’s fanbase snowballed\, drawn to their infectious spirit of commitment\, empathy\, communion\, and selfreliance – not to mention supremely crafted songs with ultra-relatable\, thought-provoking lyrics.\n\nAfter a trio of charting albums for Vanguard Records\, multiple songwriting awards and headlining shows\, Carbon Leaf opted to return to the complete creative control of their indie roots. Guitarist Terry Clark\, who co-founded the band with Privett and multi-instrumentalist Carter Gravatt\, converted his garage into the band’s Two-Car Studio\, where they’ve recorded releases for their own Constant Ivy imprint ever since. Carbon Leaf’s DIY spirit even extended to re-recording their three Vanguard albums in order to regain the rights.\n\nDue in September\, Time is the Playground is Carbon Leaf’s first full-length album in a decade\, during which they released two EPS and a 27-song live performance album and Blu-ray. Time is the Playground gathers the best of songs written\, in fits and starts\, over 15 years\, alongside brand new ideas. \n\n“Thinking about these disparate pieces of music\, I began ruminating on time itself\,” Privett recalled. “The band’s been together a long time. You mature a bit and see yourself in place on the timeline … rolling around the scenes of love and growth.”\n\nTime is the Playground will be accompanied by the tireless touring almost synonymous with Carbon Leaf\, who’ve become a model for self-managing bands in the digital landscape.
