Choices about which artists you see in our galleries, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don\u2019t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.\u00a0\u00a0\n \nIn this online exhibition, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum\u2019s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. Although Ledges isn\u2019t technically my first album, for all intents and purposes, it feels like it. It was the one I spent years writing. Some songs were written on a mattress on the floor of a rented room I shared with a friend, in a run down old house I moved into when I left my folks place at 17. Some I wrote in my first apartment in Seattle. One was written in the early hours of the morning, waking up on a friend's couch to a simple, beautiful piano arrangement Abby wrote. One, after the unexpected heroin overdose that resulted in the death of a friend. Another, after briefly reigniting an old flame, only to watch it quickly burn out. \r\n\r\nEverything was new back then. The colors were brighter, the highs higher, the lows lower. Falling in love felt like the first time. Heartbreak felt like the end of the world. Ideas felt important and the future was a big, empty canvas.\r\n\r\nThere\u2019s a lot of self importance in all of this and ultimately this is just some record that some kid made. But to that kid this record felt like his whole world. And like all records, it\u2019s a little snapshot in time. And how lucky we are to have snapshots, photographs of moments and memories that ground us in the reality we\u2019ve lived.\r\n\r\nI don\u2019t want to live in the past. But I\u2019m grateful for this marker of how it once was. A little simpler, a little cleaner, a whole lot of potential. And maybe that\u2019s a reminder that I\u2019m living in that potential, right now. This is the future I imagined and hoped for. This is the person I am now. And it\u2019s nice to be able to look back and see how far I\u2019ve come. First we'll be showing the German silent film *The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari* \u2013 one of the original silent horror films that explores the dark corners of the psyche through the story of a carnival hypnotist by day who uses his somnambulist partner to commit murders by night! The work is underscored by the incredible string quartet music of composer and pianist STEPHEN PRUTSMAN, evoking the psychological terror of these twisted visuals through the language of 12-tone technique and aesthetic of the 2nd Viennese School. Post-intermission we'll move on to the original music of that very school, into the romantically tortured mind of composer ALBAN BERG and his Lyric Suite \u2013 a latent opera on its surface, but actually a secret letter of unrequited love to Hannah Fuchs-Robettin, Alban Berg's self-proclaimed soulmate. Come join us for this gaze into the dark corners of the human psyche and THERE WILL BE POPCORN!\n\nABOUT TELEGRAPH QUARTET\n\nErin Chin & Joseph Maile, violins\nPei-Ling Lin, viola\nJeremiah Shaw, cello\n\nThe TELEGRAPH QUARTET formed in 2013 with an equal passion for standard and contemporary chamber music repertoire. Described by the *San Francisco Chronicle* as \u201c\u2026an incredibly valuable addition to the cultural landscape\u201d and \u201cpowerfully adept\u2026 with a combination of brilliance and subtlety,\u201d the Telegraph Quartet was awarded the prestigious 2016 Walter W. Naumburg Chamber Music Award and the Grand Prize at the 2014 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. The Quartet is currently the Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Michigan.\n\nThe Quartet has performed in New York City\u2019s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, San Francisco\u2019s Herbst Theatre, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music\u2019s *Chamber Masters Series*, and at festivals including the Chautauqua Institute, Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival, and the Emilia Romagna Festival.
