DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Steve Glazer Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Steve Glazer earned his BFA in art with a concentration in ceramics from Eastern Michigan University\, a master’s degree in art from Central Michigan University\, and MFA in fine arts and ceramics from Indiana State University. Since 2004\, Glazer has been lead faculty and head of ceramics at Henry Ford College\, and former faculty of Concord College (WV) and North Dakota State University. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the country.\n\nThroughout his adult life the art of Steve Glazer has been done as a response to his environment. From a series of shadow box type pieces containing life like ceramic fish while teaching at a Catholic woman’s college\, to building 8’ tall ceramic “skyscrapers” that barely fit into the display spaces while teaching in North Dakota\, where no skyscrapers exist\, and then creating installations commenting on living in Appalachia while teaching in southern West Virginia. After returning home to Detroit\, Glazer began his griot series\, the “Motor City Griot Society” masks\, the faces of the superheroes that will save Detroit\, and more recently the “Motor City Griot Patrol” creatures that will protect the city of Detroit.

DESCRIPTION:Susan Moran’s work is inspired by the natural world and our place in it.  She collects and arranges images\, builds and subtracts\, and uses processes that suit the concepts and gives the pieces a reason for existing as textiles.  Simultaneously she strives to make the medium  influence the  outcome in such a way that cloth and image meld together. DESCRIPTION:In the multi-media installation *The Butch Closet*\, artist Phranc illustrates her life stories as a queer artist\, Jewish lesbian folk singer\, and \"cardboard cobbler.\" By meticulously re-creating personal objects and pieces of clothing out of paper\, cardboard\, thread\, and paint\, she revisits her own history\, contextualizing her experiences as an iconic performer\, and maker\, constructing\, reconstructing\, and re-imagining her image against a larger historical context of second-wave feminism and queer activism. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet* is the second iteration of the project\, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works. As part of the installation\, visitors can peer into a closet built in the center of the gallery designed by the artist. Conceptually\, the space shifts from inside to outside\, public and private\, and explores themes of visibility and that which remains inaccessible or unseen.\n\nAbout the artist:\nPhranc is a jewish lesbian folksinger and queer artist who uses song\, painting and sculpture to champion personal identities and illustrate the struggle\, survival\, and victory of the queer individual. An internationally acclaimed and award winning performer. Phranc’s work integrates humor and a butch lesbian aesthetic. Her current project\, Phranc Talk: The Butch Closet\, is a multi-media memoir that spans her 40-year career. Phranc lives and works in Santa Monica\, California and Vancouver\, British Columbia.\n\n*Phranc is the 2024 Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.*

How might we advocate for access in inaccessible and often high-stakes terrain? What strategies might we use in our own conference practices to support the work of access creation?\n\nPlease register to attend on Zoom: https://myumi.ch/JwZrE\n\nAbout the Panelists:\n\nMichele Friedner (Professor and Chair\, Department of Comparative Human Development\, University of Chicago) is a medical anthropologist and works at the intersections of medical anthropology\, science and technology studies\, disability studies\, deaf studies\, and sensory studies. Her most recent book is Sensory Futures: Deafness and Cochlear Implant Infrastructures (Minnesota\, 2022). She is excited to talk about the sensory and other infrastructures of academic conferences.\n\nRuth Osorio (Associate Professor of English and Women's and Gender Studies\, Old Dominion University) is a feminist rhetorician who researches disability activism\, critical access literacies\, and feminist historiography. She has researched and participated in disability access advocacy at the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) and Feminisms and Rhetoric Conference. Outside of work\, she's a troop leader for a large LGBTQIA-affirming Girl Scout troop in Norfolk\, avid reader of novels\, and a lover of nature.\n\nKuansong Victor ZHUANG (Assistant Professor in Disability Communication\, Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information\, Nanyang Technological University Singapore) is a disability studies scholar working at the intersections of disability\, media\, cultural and communication studies. His research focuses on disability and inclusion in contemporary societies such as Singapore. He is also exploring questions of digital inclusion\, in particular\, the sociotechnical imaginaries of disability in emerging technologies\, and the intersections of sustainable futures and disability in smart cities. \n\n\nWe want to make our events accessible to all participants. DESCRIPTION:Arbor Glyph is an installation centered around a collective painting of trees\, created by Stamps students and activated by a colorful projection repurposing hand-painted elements and bringing them to life. The goal of the exhibition is to foster collaboration among student artists and engage the Stamps community\, encouraging participation through a student painting party earlier this month\, with a focus on inclusion\, expression\, and finding solace in local landscapes.The Student-led Exhibition Committee (SEC) is a newly-formed group of students\, faculty\, and staff\, aiming to create more opportunities for undergrads to exhibit on campus. Arbor Glyph follows their Winter 2024 salon-style exhibition L'Assemblage in the Stamps Art &amp\; Architecture Building\, further developing students' experience planning extracurricular exhibitions by showing in the Stamps Gallery\, and taking a new approach to creating/curating artwork.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:ECE Distinguished Seminar Series - Antimonide type-II superlattices and heterovalent integration: From MBE growth\, materials physics\, to device applications
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nThe talk consists of two parts:\n1. Antimonide type-II superlattice for IR applications: The study of InAs/InAsSb T2SL on GaSb and its application to IR lasers was started in the early ’90s. The observation of a 412 ns long carrier lifetime in a long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) InAs/InAsSb T2SL in 2011 triggered extensive research on the fundamental materials properties and device applications. Pressure-dependent photoluminescence (PL) experiments revealed some underlying material physics of these long carrier lifetimes. Some of the device applications will also be discussed.\n2. Heterovalent integration and device applications: The study the monolithic integration of these families: II-VI (BeMgZnCdHg)(SeTe)\, III-V (AlGaIn)(BiPAsSb)\, IV-IV (SiGeSn)\, and IV-VI (PbSe\, PbTe) semiconductor binaries and their alloys lattice-matched to GaAs\, GaSb\, InP\, InAs or InSb substrates. These materials have direct bandgaps covering a very broad energy spectrum from far IR to UV (0 ~ 4 eV) and small thermal mismatch\, offering opportunities to study new physics in quantum materials\, such as electrical-field-induced topological insulators in heterovalent superlattice and thin-film superconductor on semiconductor (a-Sn/InSb)\, but also enables new solar cells\, multi-color photodetectors\, resonant tunneling diodes\, and facilitates monolithic integration of various materials without misfit dislocations to ensure the highest quality for device applications.\n\nBio\n\nProfessor Zhang did his thesis research at the Max Planck Institute for Solid States and received this doctoral degree in physics from the University of Stuttgart in 1991. He then worked as an Assistant Research Engineer at UCSB before he joined Hughes Research Labs (HRL) in 1993. In 1996\, he was appointed Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at ASU and was promoted to full professor in 2000. He edited 3 books\, published 4 book chapters and more than 300 peer-reviewed journal and conference proceeding papers\, presented 400 invited and contributed conference presentations\, 18 issued and pending US patents\, advised over 30 PhD students and supervised over 40 postdocs and visiting scholars. He is a fellow of IEEE and OSA and has served as the Associate Dean for Research at the Fulton Schools of Engineering\, the director and Chair of the Governance Board of ASU NanoFab\, and the founding director of the Center for Photonics Innovation. His areas of research interest include Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) growth of II-VI\, III-V\, IV-IV\, and IV-VI materials\, optical properties of semiconductor heterostructures and their applications in solar cells\, photodetectors\, lasers\, and transistors. He is currently the chair and the co-chair of the international advisory boards for the International Conference on MBE and the North America Conference on MBE\, respectively.

She proposes touchstones for a place-based/planet-informed path forward that affectively and effectively grounds engineering\, science and law in environmental and social justice.\n\nAbout the speaker: Stephanie C. Kane is a cultural anthropologist and Emerit Professor of International Studies in the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies. Her earlier book on water and cities is entitled Where Rivers Meet the Sea: The Political Ecology of Water (2012\, Temple). Her most recent book\, Just One Rain Away: The Ethnography of River-city Flood Control (2022 McGill Queen’s) brings together diverse experimental fieldwork-based methods. Using geoscience and flood forecasting\, Kane interprets the perspective of water and ice as earth-shaping riverine actors who encounter collective humans in the form of cities. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Kelly Church & Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: September 13 – December 7\, 2024Opening Reception: September 19\, 2024\n\nKelly Church &amp\; Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue is a major exhibition that centers the subjectivities of two contemporary Indigenous artists whose practices have sustained and bolstered the relevance of the age-old Anishinaabe practice of black ash basket-making in the 21st century. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter\, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors)\, young folx\, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories\, as well as those of survivance and resilience\, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps\, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA\, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing\, thinking\, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus\, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women’s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers\, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on\, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole\, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works\, including 15-17 new works. Together\, the exhibition offers an incisive critique of the colonial\, racist paradigm of systemic erasure and assimilation that continues to this day\, with the ongoing crises of missing and murdered Indigenous women\, culture wars\, and climate change that threaten Indigenous ways of living\, sustenance\, and making. \nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra with Curatorial Assistant Zoi Crampton.\nStamps Gallery is grateful to Michigan Humanities and U-M Arts Initiative for generously supporting the exhibition and programs.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

DESCRIPTION:I write with fantastic news - on October 23rd\, 2024 at 12:00pm the Central Asian Studies RIW will be holding a moderated Zoom discussion with Dr. Paolo Sartori of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna to discuss his new book\, A Soviet Sultanate: Islam in Socialist Uzbekistan (1943‒1991). Participants should come having read\, or at least partly read\, this book (feel free\, in fact\, to simply read the introduction and conclusion\, or any parts relevant to your own research before coming!). Dr. Sartori will briefly introduce his work (3-5 minutes) and the remaining time will be spent as an open q and a\, in which anyone in attendance can ask him any question they want about Sartori's new book\, the research that went into it\, his methodology\, what he sees as its interventions in the field\, and broader historiography pertaining to Islam in Soviet Central Asia. DESCRIPTION:University Carillonist Tiffany Ng performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Earplugs are available from the carillonist upon request. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. She is also an active member of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women\, Inc.\, Orange County Chapter\, a nonprofit organization that advocates for Black women and girls in education\, economic empowerment\, public policy\, and health and wellness.\n\nLayna was born in Detroit\, Ml\, and spent her early years in Louisiana before moving to Southfield\, MI\, where she lived for 14 years. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC-CM Seminar | Johnson Noise Thermometry Using Ohmic and Hydrodynamic Electrons
DESCRIPTION:Current through a resistor exhibits temperature-dependent white noise fluctuations called Johnson-Nyquist noise. For a 2D electron system\, measuring the magnitude of these fluctuations provides a direct measurement of the electron temperature and enables methods for inferring specific heat and thermal conductivity. Here I show how to understand Johnson noise both for electrons whose flow is dictated by Ohm's law and for electrons whose flow is hydrodynamic. I then discuss experimental results from the group of Philip Kim\, which use Johnson noise measurements to demonstrate a novel method for inferring specific heat and thermal conductivity for arbitrary materials and quasiparticle excitations. Experiments in the  Corbino geometry also reveal a novel\, qualitative signature of hydrodynamic flow without the need for nonlocal measurements.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Reveal or Conceal? Employer Learning in the Labor Market for Computer Scientists
DESCRIPTION:This paper tests for employer learning about worker ability and quantifies the impact of learning on job mobility and innovation output in the labor market for computer scientists. I match the job history of over 40\,000 Ph.D. computer scientists (CS) with publications and patent applications that signal their research ability. Workers who publish at CS conferences are 45% more likely to move into a top tech firm in the next year than similar coworkers without such a public signal. Higher-quality papers are often filed as patent applications\, but the fact of filing remains private information at the incumbent employer for 18 months. Authors of such papers experience a delayed increase in upward mobility. Without employer learning from the public research records\, innovation output by early career computer scientists would drop by 15% due to greater misallocation of talent. Reducing asymmetric information between employers can expedite positive assortative matching and increase innovation by 5%.

SUMMARY:Presentation:2024 Ta-You Wu Lecture in Physics | Constraints on Quantum Gravity
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Superstring theory is currently the best candidate for the ultimate unification of general relativity and quantum mechanics. Although predictions of the theory are typically made at extremely high energies and beyond the reach of current experiments and observations\, several non-trivial constraints have recently been found on its low-energy effective theory. Because of the unusual ultraviolet behavior of gravitational theory\, the standard argument for the separation of scales does not work for gravity\, leading to robust low-energy predictions of consistency requirements at high energy. For gravitational theories in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes\, we can formulate such constraints and aim to prove or falsify them using the AdS/CFT correspondence. I will review recent progress in this approach and discuss examples of such constraints and their implications for low energy physics.\n\nPlease join us for the lecture at 3:00 pm and a reception before the lecture beginning at 2:30 pm. DESCRIPTION:Tautological classes have been instrumental in the cohomological study of moduli of bundles and sheaves since the 1980s. A natural construction using these classes\, called the Chern filtration\, has played a crucial role in recent proofs of the P=W conjecture\, where it is identified with the perverse filtration on moduli of Higgs bundles induced by the Hitchin fibration — a phenomenon now known as “P=C”. In this talk\, I will discuss an analog of this phenomenon for moduli of 1-dimensional sheaves on del Pezzo surfaces. I will survey recent progress\, highlight key differences from the P=W conjecture\, and explain some implications to enumerative geometry. Based on a series of papers joint with Y. Kononov\, W. Lim\, M. Moreira\, J. Shen\, F. Si\, and F. Zhang.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nSpatially resolved transcriptomics technologies have opened new avenues for understanding gene expression heterogeneity and tissue architecture by mapping gene expression directly to cell locations. In this talk\, I will introduce two recent studies in this field. The first evaluates 15 clustering methods for spatial transcriptomics data using semi-synthetic datasets to discern the contributions of gene expression\, spatial\, and histological data. Our results indicate that while additional data layers can enhance clustering accuracy\, they do not consistently outperform traditional gene-expression-based approaches. The second study introduces spVC\, a novel statistical method inspired by the initial findings and designed using a generalized Poisson model to effectively detect and interpret spatial gene expression variations. spVC seamlessly integrates constant and spatially varying effects of covariates\, facilitating comprehensive exploration of gene expression variability and enhancing interpretability. These contributions reflect our ongoing commitment to refining analytical techniques in spatial transcriptomics\, ultimately enriching our biological understanding.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Late Antiquity in Heavy Metal Music
DESCRIPTION:One of the most prolific forms of the reception of the ancient world is the popular music genre of heavy metal. Hundreds of bands all over the world have contributed to a growing catalogue of thousands of songs\, including dozens of concept albums\, inspired by the history\, mythology\, philosophy\, and art of the ancient Mediterranean. This phenomenon has increasingly drawn the attention of antiquity scholars working within the nascent field of metal music studies\, who have noted how the genre’s predilection for themes of power\, violence\, monstrosity\, liberation\, and heritage make antiquity especially appealing for adaptation in music\, lyrics\, album artwork\, music videos\, stage performance\, and merchandise. Most of this reception reflects that in popular culture\, treating more familiar subjects like Medusa\, Sparta\, Alexander\, Cleopatra\, and Nero. Subjects from late antiquity appear less frequently—but the cases where they do are equally interesting and insightful\, if not more so\, into how profoundly metal artists can engage with both\nprimary and secondary sources for ancient political and religious history. These cases include concept albums on the tragic heroism of the emperor Julian and general Belisarius\, songs glorifying Diocletian’s persecutions and condemning Constantine’s conversion\, and cover artwork meant to depict the Visigothic sack of Rome. For heavy metal\, late antiquity is where the romanticized past collides with the dystopian present.\n\nJeremy Swist is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Classics at Grand Valley State University\, having previously taught at Miami University and Brandeis University. He earned his Ph.D. and MA in Classics from the University of Iowa\, and BA in Latin and History from the University of Maine. His published research has explored the intersections of Greek and Latin rhetoric\, philosophy\, medicine\, and historiography under the later Roman Empire\, especially around the emperor Julian. Jeremy’s first monograph\, titled Julian Augustus: Platonism\, Myth\, and the Refounding of Rome\, will be published by Oxford University Press next year. He has also published on the prolific reception of ancient Greece\, Rome\, and Byzantium in heavy metal music\, and is co-organizer of the biennial Heavy Metal and Global Premodernity online conference.

Hear special guests Bret Stephens and Lydia Polgreen of The New York Times\, María Elena Salinas of ABC News\, and Vince Hutchings of U-M Center for Political Studies in conversation with veteran Michigan journalist Stephen Henderson. As part of the University of Michigan’s Year of Democracy\, Civic Empowerment\, and Global Engagement initiative\, this special event will provide insights on critical issues shaping the 2024 election and social science research on the American voting public.\n\nDrawing on findings from the 75-year-long American National Election Studies\, the discussion will explore the dramatic rise of political polarization\, the significant decline in public trust in government — which has dropped from 80% in the 1950s to just 20% today — and other key factors influencing voter behavior. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an interview-style talkback and Q&A with ESPN sports journalist Katie Barnes\, who will discuss their work covering transgender student athletes and their recent book\, \"Fair Play: How Sports Shape the Gender Debates.\" Katie will also draw on historical context to help make meaning of anti-trans legislation that impacts the experiences of student athletes around the world.\n\nABOUT KATIE\nKatie Barnes (they/them) is an award-winning journalist and author. Their first book\, Fair Play: How Sports Shape the Gender Debates chronicles the relationship between sports and gender while focusing on transgender athletes and the movement to keep them out of girls’ and women’s sports. Fair Play received starred reviews from Booklist and Kirkus\, a positive review from the Washington Post\, and was named a “Must-Read Book of 2023\" by Time Magazine.\n\nAs a narrative feature writer at ESPN\, Katie's writing has focused on a number of topics ranging across sports\, but they have a particular concentration on gender.  Since joining ESPN\, Katie has written almost exclusively about women\, LGBTQ athletes\, and pop culture. Most of their writing explores big ideas\, from how law and policy affects transgender athletes to how the intersection of race\, sexuality\, and gender expression affects the marketability of WNBA athletes to what makes “Bring It On” such an iconic sports movie. As a journalist and cultural commentator\, Katie has been interviewed by MSNBC\, CNN\, NPR\, WNYC\, multiple ESPN platforms\, and numerous podcasts about these topics. They were honored for their work by NLGJA – The Association of LGBTQ Journalists as the 2017 Journalist of the Year.\n\nNOTE: NO CAMPAIGNING OR CAMPAIGN ATTIRE\nUMMA\, our venue for this event\, is separately hosting the satellite office of the Ann Arbor City Clerk. DESCRIPTION:This will be a bilingual Poetry Reading in Turkish and English from Zafer Şenocak's latest book\, *First Light* (Zephyr Press\, 2024) \n\nZafer Şenocak is a prolific Turkish-German poet\, novelist\, essayist and public intellectual\, who has published more than 30 books over the past 40 years. Born in Turkey\, Şenocak moved to Germany as a child\, and has lived in Berlin as a freelance writer since 1989. He has written widely on issues of diversity in Germany\, migration and exile\, the Turkish diaspora\, and the small distances and great fears of a globalizing Europe. Historical questions of mixed and broken identities are key to his novels\, which utilize nonlinear modes of storytelling to emphasize the fragmented nature of memory. His writing includes poetry and novels in both German and Turkish\, and he is a frequent contributor to nationwide German newspapers\, like Tageszeitung\, Tagesspiegel and Die Welt. Şenocak’s work has been translated into English\, Spanish\, Italian\, French\, and Czech. \n\nŞenocak has been a writer in residence at UC Berkeley\, M.I.T.\, Oberlin College\, Dartmouth College\, and the University of Arizona. He is currently in residence at the University of Michigan during the Fall 2024 term. A volume of his German-language poems appeared in English translation as *Door Languages* in 2008 (trans. Elizabeth Oehlkers-Wright\, Zephyr Press). And his essay collection \"Atlas of a Tropical Germany\" was edited and translated by Prof. Leslie A. Adelson in 2000 (Nebraska Press). Most recently\, his Turkish-language poetry has been translated into English by UM Professor Kristin Dickinson\, which appeared in a bilingual edition with Zephyr Press in 2024 under the title\, *First Light*.\n\nZafer's visit is sponsored by the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures and the Max Kade Foundation.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Arab and Muslim Americans and the U.S. Presidential Election: Uncommitted or Unrequited?
DESCRIPTION:Muslim Americans are deeply concerned about the Gaza crisis\, for some it is prioritized over other issues. Despite being integrated into American society\, they also care about the economy\, climate change\, healthcare\, and immigration. Viewing themselves as part of the global Muslim community\, they are affected by the over 40\,000 deaths in Gaza\, mostly women and children\, due to the belief that harm to one part of the \"ummah\" affects all. This connection\, often just one degree removed from individuals in Gaza\, complicates their stance in the presidential election.\n\nWe will discuss these issues with Dr. Youssef Chouhoud\, an Assistant Professor of Political Science affiliated with the Reiff Center for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution at Christopher Newport University.
