SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\n*The exhibition is cosponsored by the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Steve Glazer Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Steve Glazer earned his BFA in art with a concentration in ceramics from Eastern Michigan University\, a master’s degree in art from Central Michigan University\, and MFA in fine arts and ceramics from Indiana State University. Since 2004\, Glazer has been lead faculty and head of ceramics at Henry Ford College\, and former faculty of Concord College (WV) and North Dakota State University. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the country.\n\nThroughout his adult life the art of Steve Glazer has been done as a response to his environment. From a series of shadow box type pieces containing life like ceramic fish while teaching at a Catholic woman’s college\, to building 8’ tall ceramic “skyscrapers” that barely fit into the display spaces while teaching in North Dakota\, where no skyscrapers exist\, and then creating installations commenting on living in Appalachia while teaching in southern West Virginia. After returning home to Detroit\, Glazer began his griot series\, the “Motor City Griot Society” masks\, the faces of the superheroes that will save Detroit\, and more recently the “Motor City Griot Patrol” creatures that will protect the city of Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Susan Moran Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Susan Moran’s work is inspired by the natural world and our place in it. She collects and arranges images\, builds and subtracts\, and uses processes that suit the concepts and gives the pieces a reason for existing as textiles. Simultaneously she strives to make the medium influence the outcome in such a way that cloth and image meld together. Moran uses silkscreen\, shibori\, and stitching to embed images from her daily walks into the fabric. it's important that the work builds slowly\, involving meditative processes that connect her to the cloth and the source of the design.\n\nGallery hours: Monday-Friday\, 9 am to 5pm or by appointment serrag@med.umich.edu

The group is designed for parents and caregivers with children ages 5 and under who have diagnosed or suspected Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or a Developmental Delay.\n\nThe virtual parenting training group will meet weekly on Mondays from 12 – 1 p.m. via Zoom\, with a planned start date of October 28th.\n\nFall 2024 ESDM Group Details\n+ When: 12 – 1 p.m. Mondays\, beginning October 28 (10 weeks).\n+ Where: Online via Zoom\n+ Who: Parents and caregivers with children under the age of 5 who have diagnosed or suspected ASD/Developmental Delay\n+ Cost: Some insurances accepted\; self-pay also accepted and is $45 per weekly session.\n+ Register: Complete our secure\, online registration form to get started or call (734) 615-7853 for more information.\n\nAbout the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) Group\nThe ESDM group is a naturalistic treatment that represents a fusion between behavioral treatment methods and developmental theory. Treatment goals will focus on building strong social communication skills in young children with ASD/Developmental Delays and reducing problematic behaviors. The parent training group is designed to teach parents these strategies to increase the number of intervention hours that young children receive. \n\nA secondary goal is to support parents of children with ASD/Developmental Delays and help them develop a community of parents in a similar life stage. Since it is a parent training group\, children are welcome but not required to attend.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Student Logic and History of Math Seminar (Invited Address): Degrees of (un)definability
DESCRIPTION:In calculus\, one learns several subtle \"pathologies\" involving the real number line\, such as convergent but not absolutely convergent infinite series\, differentiable functions with discontinuous derivative\, and infinitely-differentiable functions whose Taylor series has zero radius of convergence. A little thought reveals that some of these concepts seem to be much more complicated than others. For example\, while in calculus one learns to approximately \"check\" if a function is continuously differentiable (just draw a graph and zoom in!)\, it seems absolutely hopeless to check plain differentiability in any systematic way.\n\nThis talk will give a gentle introduction to Descriptive Set Theory\, a subfield of mathematical logic providing the tools to make such statements precise\, which can be variously thought of as \"infinitary propositional logic\"\, \"low-level set theory\"\, \"real analysis without approximations\"\, or \"computability modulo countable uncomputability\".

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RTG Number Theory Seminar: Geometric Satake
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: As a first step toward Bezrukavnikov's equivalence we will describe the geometric Satake equivalence\, which categorifies the classical Satake isomorphism for the unramified Hecke algebra. It is also a cornerstone of the geometric Langlands program and plays a fundamental role in geometric constructions of Langlands correspondences\, such as in the works of V. Lafforgue and Fargues-Scholze. Along the way we will discuss equivariant perverse sheaves\, the affine Grassmannian\, and the representation theory of reductive algebraic groups.\n\nSeminar webpage: https://umrep.github.io/

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Uncovering Early Galaxy Formation with JWST: A Modeling Perspective
DESCRIPTION:The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is transforming our understanding on galaxy formation and evolution\, revealing distant galaxies deep into the epoch of reionization and red sources that were simply unknown pre-JWST. In this talk\, I will discuss two key areas\, with a focus on the challenges in modeling the spectral energy distributions in the JWST era. First\, a central science goal of JWST is finding the first galaxies\, which often requires modeling of photometric data to select candidates for spectroscopic follow-up. I will show the modeling work that turns the nearby cluster A2744 to one of deepest views of our universe\, as part of the UNCOVER survey. The resulting rich\, public dataset\, reveals stellar populations across 0.2 < z < 13\, and helps to lead to the discovery of the surprisingly large galaxies at z > 12. I will also briefly discuss how this exquisite dataset is poised to redefine our census of galaxy populations. Second\, the optical/IR sensitivity of JWST has led to the discovery of compact red sources\, initially interpreted as apparently massive galaxies at z > 7. This interpretation yields a strongly accelerated time line compared to standard models of galaxy growth. Yet\, major uncertainties remain about their nature due to the limited photometric data. I will present detailed studies of these so-far mysterious \"little red dots\"\, enabled by the spectroscopic data from the RUBIES program. Remarkably\, we find clear signatures of evolved stellar populations\, the formation histories of which extend hundreds of millions of years into the past in galaxies only 600–800 Myr after the big bang. Confoundingly\, some of them exhibit broad Balmer emission lines\, suggesting that dust-reddened AGNs contribute to\, or even dominate\, the spectral energy distributions red-ward of ~rest 0.6μm. I will explore potential origins and evolutionary tracks\, from the cores of massive galaxies to low-mass galaxies with over-massive black holes\, and conclude with remaining puzzles and possible future directions to form a complete physical picture of these intriguing systems.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series: The Social Psychology of Systemic Racism (Stacey Sinclair)
DESCRIPTION:Oct. 28\, 2024\, Stacey Sinclair (Princeton University)\n\nHow the way diversity is framed impacts majority and minority group members\n\nStacey Sinclair will describe a program of research that examines the ironic nature of efforts to support racial diversity in American universities. American universities are more apt to embrace racial diversity because it serves institutional goals\, such as enhancement of group learning and corresponding cognitive skills (i.e.\, institutional rationales)\, rather than because it manifests institutional values\, such as fairness (i.e.\, moral rationales). Our research suggests that instrumental rationales do not reflect the preferences of those they are purported to serve\, low-status racial minorities. Rather\, they comport with the preferences of White Americans\, especially political conservatives. Further\, embracing instrumental rationales in the absence of moral rationales is associated with negative outcomes for low-status racial minorities.\n\n\nThe RCGD Seminar Series on the Social Psychology of Systemic Racism meets Mondays from 3:30 to 5 at ISR Thompson 1430. When speaker permission is given\, events will be recorded and posted within a few weeks to YouTube.\n\nThe Social Psychology of Systemic Racism\nWhat are the points of connection between structures and individuals when we think about bias? In the Fall 2024 RCGD Seminar Series “The Social Psychology of Systemic Racism\,” an all-star lineup of behavioral and political psychologists will define what\, in their words\, makes systemic racism systemic\, and how extra-individual levels of analysis could be incorporated in social psychological theories and methods.\n\nGroup Dynamics Seminar Series\nThe Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. The seminar series runs every semester on a theme chosen by faculty organizer/s who are affiliated with the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the Institute for Social Research. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent themes have included political polarization\, evolution and human behavior\, and cultural psychology

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Lecture Series | Stories from Mumbai’s Archive of Loss
DESCRIPTION:Based on fieldwork conducted in the transforming textile mill lands of Mumbai\, India\, this talk expands ideas begun in her book\, The Archive of Loss: Lively Ruination in Mill Land Mumbai\, which explored everyday life and work at the last privately owned textile mill\, which she calls Dhanraj Spinning and Weaving Ltd. Through memories of the Great Textile Strike of 1982–1983\, this talk looks for the truths within “fictions” told by Dhanraj workers. Through “untrue” stories\, she engages the notion of an impossible subject and explore the crisis of an impossible story: what do anthropologists do with informant testimonies we know to be factually incorrect? How do we collect\, interpret\, and use informant lies\, manipulations\, and untruths as critical archival material? She attempts to answer these questions through her relationship with someone she calls Kishan\, a North Indian textile worker from Bihar. In doing so\, she shows what it looks like to live precariously in a space of ruination.\n\nMaura Finkelstein is a writer\, ethnographer\, and former associate professor of anthropology. She is the author of *The Archive of Loss: Lively Ruination in Mill Land Mumbai*\, published by Duke University Press in 2019. Her writing has also been published in Anthological Quarterly\, City and Society\, Cultural Anthropology\, Anthropology Now\, Post45\, Electric Literature\, Allegra Lab\, Red Pepper Magazine\, The Markaz Review\, the Scottish Left Review\, Mondoweiss\, and Al Jazeera.\n \nhttps://www.maurafinkelstein.com/\n \nMade possible with the generous support of the Title VI grant from the U.S. Department of Education.\n \nFree and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GLNT: A description of the integral depth-r Bernstein center
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: We give a description of the depth-r Bernstein center for non-negative integers r for a connected reductive group G over a non-archimedean local field\, as a limit of depth-r standard parahoric Hecke algebras. Using this description\, we produce elements of the depth-r center by constructing a map to the depth- r center from a certain subalgebra ( which we call stable functions) of the algebra of invariant functions on the r-th Moy Prasad filtration quotient of hyperspecial parahorics. We use these elements to attach an invariant to each depth-r irreducible representation\, and show that this is equal to the semi-simple part of minimal K-types contained in the irreducible representation. This talk is based on a joint work with Tsao-Hsien Chen.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:ISRMT Seminar: Critical phenomena in the 2-matrix model: the Ising model coupled to gravity
DESCRIPTION:The unitary invariant ensembles of random matrix theory (collectively referred to as the `1-matrix model’) are one of the central objects of study in the theory of random matrices. Upon tuning the parameters of this model\, one can realize certain `higher-order' eigenvalue correlations at the endpoints of the density of eigenvalues. In the 1-matrix model\, these higher-order correlation kernels can be written in terms of special solutions of the Painlevé I and II hierarchies. We refer to such special tunings as critical phenomena.\n\nThe 2-matrix model is an extension of the 1-matrix model\, which came to be well-studied in part because it admits a much richer class of critical phenomena. In this talk\, I will survey some of the conjectures regarding these critical phenomena from the physics literature\, and discuss some of the physical implications of these results. In particular\, I will discuss some forthcoming work (joint with Maurice Duits and Seung-Yeop Lee) regarding a special critical phenomenon in the 2-matrix model\, which has implications in the theory of the Ising minimal model coupled to topological gravity.\n\nEmail eblackst@umich.edu for the zoom link.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Putting the Black Back in the Mediterranean: The De/facement of Whiteness and European Innocence in Contemporary Greek Society
DESCRIPTION:It is commonly assumed that Greece\, like other countries in the Balkan region\, is not a place where we need to discuss race\, anti-blackness\, white supremacy\, or even European colonial histories. This talk\, by contrast\, draws on Penelope Papalias’s experience as a founding member of the initiative dëcoloиıze hellάş and training in historical anthropology at the University of Michigan to make a case for the hidden centrality of coloniality and white supremacy to myths of Greek nation and modernity. Drawing on two ethnographic case studies\, Professor Papailias uses a critical keyword of the decolonial movement\, defacement\, to make a case for the historic whitening (not inherent whiteness) of the Mediterranean given the connectedness of modern Greece to the project of European modernity.\n\nPenelope Papailias is Αssociate Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Thessaly\, where she directs the Pelion Summer Lab for Cultural Theory and Experimental Humanities. Having grown up in New York City\, the child of a Greek immigrant\, and studied English literature at Harvard (B.A) and cultural anthropology at the University of Michigan (Ph.D.) before returning/migrating to her father’s homeland\, she is especially critical of the role of knowledge production in national mythologies and narratives of settler colonial states. Her research centers on historical culture\, the politics of memory and monuments\; media events\, affective networks and witnessing of violence/death of the Other in/as the public sphere\; necropolitics\, ecocide\, decoloniality and black geographies in the Greek context\; experimental pedagogies and public anthropology. Among her publications are Genres of Recollection: Archival Poetics and Modern Greece (Palgrave Macmillian\, 2005)\, Digital Ethnography (Kallipos\, 2015\, with P. Petridis)\, A Call to Rasanblaj: Black Feminist Futures & Ethnographic Aesthetics (ed.\, Rosa Luxemburg Greece\, 2023) and Greek Colonialities (ed.\, Rosa Luxemburg Greece).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Trip Permutations of Non-reduced Plabic Fences with Legs
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will introduce plabic graphs and discuss how to classify them using an invariant called trip permutation and a criterion called reduced-ness. In reduced plabic graphs\, trip permutations both tell us important information about the postroid cell each plabic graph corresponds to and give us face labels which correspond to clusters in the cluster algebra on positroid varieties. A natural question is: Do non-reduced plabic graphs also have nice combinatorial structures on their trip permutations? I will study a special class of type A non-reduced plabic graphs called \"Plabic fences with legs\,\" whose trip permutations have at most 2 disjoint cycles. I will then give a nice way to check if any given cycle arises from the trip permutation of some plabic fence with legs.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:EXCEL Talk: Building and Sustaining a Musical Freelance Career
DESCRIPTION:Lindsay Kesselman and Christopher Cerrone have been collaborating on creating music for over a decade. Their partnership began with a chance encounter in Los Angeles in 2013\, when Lindsay boldly told Chris\, \"Everyone is singing your music wrong.\" Intrigued\, Chris wanted to explore this ideafurther. Lindsay's 2014 performance of Chris's songs \"I will learn to love a person\" confirmed his belief that a great collaborator could teach him something profound about his own music. Since then\, they have worked together on two GRAMMY-nominated albums and numerous other projects.Their enduring relationship\, characterized by mutual respect and honesty\, serves as a model for creating new music. It demonstrates how a composer-performer partnership can sustain a life in music.
