DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. An award-winning American photographer of Ukrainian descent\, Sywenkyj has lived and worked in Ukraine for the last two decades. He has worked throughout Europe and Central Asia for numerous publications and is a frequent contributor to *The Wall Street Journal*. DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Steve Glazer Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Steve Glazer earned his BFA in art with a concentration in ceramics from Eastern Michigan University\, a master’s degree in art from Central Michigan University\, and MFA in fine arts and ceramics from Indiana State University. Since 2004\, Glazer has been lead faculty and head of ceramics at Henry Ford College\, and former faculty of Concord College (WV) and North Dakota State University. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the country.\n\nThroughout his adult life the art of Steve Glazer has been done as a response to his environment. From a series of shadow box type pieces containing life like ceramic fish while teaching at a Catholic woman’s college\, to building 8’ tall ceramic “skyscrapers” that barely fit into the display spaces while teaching in North Dakota\, where no skyscrapers exist\, and then creating installations commenting on living in Appalachia while teaching in southern West Virginia. After returning home to Detroit\, Glazer began his griot series\, the “Motor City Griot Society” masks\, the faces of the superheroes that will save Detroit\, and more recently the “Motor City Griot Patrol” creatures that will protect the city of Detroit.

DESCRIPTION:Susan Moran’s work is inspired by the natural world and our place in it.  She collects and arranges images\, builds and subtracts\, and uses processes that suit the concepts and gives the pieces a reason for existing as textiles.  Simultaneously she strives to make the medium  influence the  outcome in such a way that cloth and image meld together. Over 82 percent of Rackham doctoral students who have written mentoring plans report those plans to be useful.\nFaculty who have attended a MORE workshop in the previous academic year should feel free to join the workshop only for the student-faculty work together (the last hour of the workshop). DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Machine learning (ML) methods are having a huge impact across all of the sciences. However\, ML has a strong ontology - in which only the data exist - and a strong epistemology - in which a model is considered good if it performs well on held-out training data. These philosophies are in strong conflict with both standard practices and key philosophies in the natural sciences. I identify some locations for ML in the natural sciences at which the ontology and epistemology are valuable. I also show that there are contexts in which the introduction of ML introduces strong\, unwanted statistical biases. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... DESCRIPTION:Arbor Glyph is an installation centered around a collective painting of trees\, created by Stamps students and activated by a colorful projection repurposing hand-painted elements and bringing them to life. The goal of the exhibition is to foster collaboration among student artists and engage the Stamps community\, encouraging participation through a student painting party earlier this month\, with a focus on inclusion\, expression\, and finding solace in local landscapes.The Student-led Exhibition Committee (SEC) is a newly-formed group of students\, faculty\, and staff\, aiming to create more opportunities for undergrads to exhibit on campus. Arbor Glyph follows their Winter 2024 salon-style exhibition L'Assemblage in the Stamps Art &amp\; Architecture Building\, further developing students' experience planning extracurricular exhibitions by showing in the Stamps Gallery\, and taking a new approach to creating/curating artwork.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Kelly Church & Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: September 13 – December 7\, 2024Opening Reception: September 19\, 2024\n\nKelly Church &amp\; Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue is a major exhibition that centers the subjectivities of two contemporary Indigenous artists whose practices have sustained and bolstered the relevance of the age-old Anishinaabe practice of black ash basket-making in the 21st century. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter\, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors)\, young folx\, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories\, as well as those of survivance and resilience\, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps\, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA\, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing\, thinking\, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus\, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women’s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers\, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on\, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole\, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works\, including 15-17 new works. Together\, the exhibition offers an incisive critique of the colonial\, racist paradigm of systemic erasure and assimilation that continues to this day\, with the ongoing crises of missing and murdered Indigenous women\, culture wars\, and climate change that threaten Indigenous ways of living\, sustenance\, and making. \nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra with Curatorial Assistant Zoi Crampton.\nStamps Gallery is grateful to Michigan Humanities and U-M Arts Initiative for generously supporting the exhibition and programs.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

Each of his creations are conceived in a voyeuristic way that pushes the spectator to wonder what exists beyond the scope of the work. Each character in this humorous and interpretative world becomes a reflection of our society.\n\n\"Identity Potpourri\" by 2Fik is a mixture of different artworks from various series by the artist between 2006 and 2016. The exhibition will open at 6 PM on October 30 and be on display until November 8.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Flash Talk | One Thread at a Time: Egyptian Weaving Communities in the Third Intermediate Period
DESCRIPTION:Linen textiles were deeply intertwined with pharaonic Egyptian culture throughout its 3\,000-year history. The importance of this fabric can be seen in the surviving material culture of this ancient civilization\, such as the representations of figures wearing bright white linen garments in tomb paintings and intricately wrapped and carefully shrouded mummified bodies. However\, unraveling the lives of the people involved in the production of these textiles is quite challenging\, as these individuals are relatively invisible in the historical and archaeological record. One way to approach this problem is to examine the textiles they created with their own hands. Each thread that was spun and woven was created by communities of practice\, which—through a process of situated learning—developed a shared repertoire of techniques\, skills\, and preferences. When we look at a handmade textile\, whether ancient or modern\, we are seeing the results of the countless choices made in each stage of its production. \n\nIn this Flash Talk\, Heidi Hilliker (PhD candidate in Egyptology) investigates a collection of mortuary textiles from Theban tombs of 21st and 22nd Dynasty Egypt\, evaluating local similarities and differences in textile production. The textiles in question\, which come from tombs at Deir el-Bahari and Bab el-Gasus\, display striped patterns in undyed\, blue\, and red thread along the selvage (the vertical edge of the cloth formed during the weaving process). While these patterns undoubtedly served a decorative purpose\, this talk argues that they also conveyed information about the makers themselves. A communities-of-practice approach suggests that these striped markings encapsulate the traditions learned within a network of weavers and may even represent intentional forms of maker’s marks used by workshops\, groups\, or individual weavers.\n\nKelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by Kelsey curators\, staff members\, researchers\, graduate students\, and guests talking about their recent research or current projects. Lay Auto Lab and\n\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/97823527756?pwd=H01BbvtuG5q02Wzb8LJvhUnvijlAIe.1\n\nAbstract: Cell reprogramming\, the transformation of a cell from one cell type to another through the introduction of exogenous transcription factors (TFs)\, is a rapidly developing research area that could lead to groundbreaking therapeutic technologies in areas such as tissue regeneration\, disease modeling\, and personalized medicine. However\, there still exist many challenges obstructing its practical viability. Discovering which TFs induce reprogramming requires a combinatorial search\, and testing a single\ncandidate set of TFs experimentally can cost tens of thousands of dollars and take multiple months. Moreover\, even when an effective set of TFs is known\, cell conversion efficiency lies only around 5%.\n\nFaced with these challenges\, researchers have developed computational surrogate models to rapidly explore the TF search space at a fraction of the cost of wet lab experimentation. Unfortunately\, these models have seen limited success in practice due to the difficulty of capturing the complex gene-gene\ninteractions within the cell\, most of which are still not well-understood. With the recent high-profile rise of transformer-based foundation models for natural language\, researchers are now turning to the transformer to push past current performance limitations in a wide range of digital biology tasks\, including cell reprogramming. Of particular interest in these models is the attention mechanism\, which is potentially well-suited for capturing long-range gene-gene interactions at a higher fidelity than previously possible. In this talk\, I will describe how the transformer architecture has been adapted for cellular biology and analyze the utility of one such model\, Geneformer\, in identifying TFs for cell reprogramming. Specifically\, I will present the results of an in silico perturbation experiment for reprogramming fibroblast cells to hematopoietic stem cells and compare the outcomes to experimental results found in the literature. I will conclude the talk with a discussion of the drawbacks and limitations of the Geneformer model and provide an assessment of what will be needed in the future for digital biology to fully reap the benefits of large-scale foundation models.\n\nBio:\nNick Galioto is a second-year postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics at the University of Michigan (UM). He received his PhD at UM in aerospace engineering in 2023 under the advising of Alex Gorodetsky and remained in the lab for an additional year as a postdoc. In the Gorodetsky lab\, Nick researched how to use stochastic models of dynamical systems to improve system identification. Now\, Nick works in the Rajapakse lab researching how to create data-driven models of the dynamics of cell reprogramming.

DESCRIPTION:SMTD doctoral alumna Jenna Moon will play the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds. The will program include music that honors the start of Native American Heritage Month.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Earplugs are available from the carillonist upon request. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. These centers feel like a blend between academia and industry\, and they offer rewarding research careers for newly minted PhD recipients. In this talk\, I will discuss the quantum research being done at Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI)\, a UARC affiliated with the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. I will go in depth in my own research in Rydberg atom-based electric field sensing. I will also discuss my path from UMich physics to GTRI.\n\nMichael Viray is a Research Scientist at GTRI. He works in the Quantum Systems Division of the Cybersecurity\, Information Protection\, and Hardware Evaluation Research (CIPHER) Laboratory of GTRI. Before GTRI\, he was a PhD student at the University of Michigan from 2015 to 2021\, working in Professor Georg Raithel's group. His thesis work focused on photoionization and plasma dynamics in cold atom systems.

DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Ekaterina Olson Shipyatsky\, PhD Candidate in Political Science (Political Theory) and the Museum Studies Certificate Program.\n\nBefore the Holocaust\, Poland was home to approximately 3.3 million Jews – making it the world’s second-largest Jewish community. By the end of World War II\, Nazis and collaborators had succeeded in killing over 90% of Poland’s Jewish population\, about three million people. Most survivors emigrated\, but an estimated 90\,000 remained – only to be expelled in large numbers through an antisemitic\, government-run campaign in 1968.  \n\nTraces of both the vibrant Jewish community that once lived in Poland – and the violence that killed and expelled so many of them – are visible in today’s contemporary Polish landscape: synagogues that are now furniture stores\, doorframes that once held mezuzot\, overgrown Jewish cemeteries. The Galicia Jewish Museum\, located in Kazimierz\, the pre-Holocaust heart of the Kraków Jewish Community\, exhibits photographs of these traces. In doing so\, the museum aims to complicate a narrative of Polish Jewish history that usually begins and ends solely with Auschwitz. \nIn this talk\, I share some of my experiences interning at the Galicia Jewish Museum this summer. Drawing on my experience giving tours of the museum’s permanent exhibition and working in the museum’s education department\, I’ll discuss the tangles of remembering the Holocaust in Poland and the complex landscape of Jewish institutions in Kraków. Institutions like the Galicia Jewish Museum\, I’ll argue\, offer us an opportunity to reflect on the politics of memory museums\, urban museology\, and the decisions that face those who live among traces of genocidal violence.

This talk outlines the challenges and opportunities that a rich corpus of religious and ritual texts\, primarily from the late second and early first millennia BCE\, presents for addressing this legacy. Contemporary understandings of gendered religious titles in Mesopotamia rely on Orientalist tropes that guided the decipherment of the Akkadian language itself\, distorting our understanding of the social landscape of gender. Through a case study\, I will show how a reevaluation of the textual record can furnish a more accurate understanding of the intersection of gender and religious authority in Mesopotamia.\n\nJessie DeGrado is an assistant professor of Middle East Studies at the University of Michigan. His interests include the intersection of empire\, gender\, and religion in the early first millennium BCE. His current book project explores the entanglement of modern imperialism with the historiography of ancient empire. He is also in the early stages of a project that treats religious texts and ritual sites as loci of gender consolidation and contestation in ancient Mesopotamia.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Ostrich eggshell bead-making in East Africa: a study of  crafting in the El Molo community\, Kenya
DESCRIPTION:African societies have produced ostrich eggshell beads for over 50\,000 years. These beads are still used in East Africa and other regions. However\, the only well-documented ethnographic records of their manufacture come from the San and Bakgalagadi communities in the Kalahari region of southern Africa. Despite this\, some aspects of their social significance remain largely unexplored.\n\nHistorically\, research on ostrich eggshell beads in southern Africa has focused mainly on their use in exchange contexts\, with less emphasis on their role in bodily adornment or the social contexts of their manufacture and consumption. This talk reports on the production process of ostrich eggshell beads and their cultural significance among the El Molo community of Marsabit County\, Kenya.\n\nUndertaken as part of the British Museum’s Endangered Materials Knowledge Program (EMKP)\, this project utilized unstructured interviews\, participatory videos\, photography\, and note-taking to document the entire process of ostrich eggshell bead manufacture. It also examined the social significance of the different types of necklaces made from these beads within the community.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:When biomolecules come together in clusters and condensates
DESCRIPTION:Cellular environments are dense with proteins and nucleic acids at high concentrations. Results from computer simulations and experiments are presented that explore dynamic associations ranging from clusters to condensates. From atomistic simulations and extensive comparisons with experimental data\, cluster formation involving proteins is identified as a major determinant of slowed-down diffusion at high concentration depending on protein interaction strength but also contact life times. Results from coarse-grained simulations with the recently developed COCOMO model explore charge-driven condensation involving different systems ranging from globular proteins and RNA to short peptides and RNA fragment and condensates composed of intrinsically disordered peptides. Finally\, recent results form atomistic simulations of condensates are presented to discuss molecular densities and dynamics inside biomolecular condensates.

They will play the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Carillon\, an instrument of 60 bells with the lowest bell (bourdon) weighing 6 tons.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Lurie Carillon every weekday that classes are in session. During these recitals\, visitors may take the elevator to level 2 to view the largest bells\, or to level 3 to see the carillonist performing. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Major Trade-Offs: The Surprising Truths about College Majors and Entry-level Jobs
DESCRIPTION:In today’s economy\, many college graduates are underemployed. To safeguard their employment outcomes\, the popular press\, policymakers\, and college administrators emphasize the importance of “practical majors” as an avenue to professional success for students. Major Trade-Offs delves into the internship and early employment experiences of students from four majors to investigate the organizational and cultural infrastructure that underlies practical arts majors’ initial labor market advantages over liberal arts graduates. Drawing on almost 200 longitudinal interviews\, Corey Moss-Pech shows that students with more “practical” degrees often easily enter the labor market through structured internship programs and they find entry-level jobs that are highly paid. However\, these jobs mostly involve mundane clerical tasks not drawing on graduates’ major-specific skills. Those who studied the liberal arts\, on the other hand\, often don’t have access to such internships\, struggle to enter the labor market\, and land in jobs that rarely pay a middle-class wage but do meaningfully draw on their major-specific skills. These differences reflect intersectional inequality\, as White middle-class men are more likely to occupy lucrative majors than women and men from less privileged backgrounds. Major Trade-Offs demonstrates the key advantages to vocational majors lie not in learning technical skills\, but in smooth labor market entry\, a finding that undermines how both academics and stakeholders think about the utility of college disciplines and the skills they teach. Moss-Pech lays out a new vision for the college-to-work transition\, making valuable contributions to our pressing national conversation about the value of higher education in society.

DESCRIPTION:The US political arena is generally a bleak mix of distressing and aggravating\, particularly in the current highly polarized climate\, but that distress only increases the need to honestly and scientifically understand the forces at play in ideological space\, and the polarization offers emergent simplicity and thus a unique opportunity for mathematical modeling. This talk will share some recent and ongoing attempts to visualize and understand the current political landscape\, as well as some quantitative patterns in political psychology and the modern information ecosystem. These recently-gathered data inform a mechanistic dynamical model of ideological drift\, allowing theory to extrapolate the complex implications of micro-scale data to macro-scale outcomes---while iteratively improving and suggesting further data-gathering efforts to corner remaining uncertainty. The first waves of results from this perspective provide some remarkable insights\, providing some hope of understanding and productively informing political messaging and algorithmic design for a more reasonable political future.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Sociocultural Anthropology Colloquium | \"Suspicion as Care: Reportage and Accusation in Perú’s Community Mental Health Reform\"
DESCRIPTION:\"Perú initiated the implementation of a Community Mental Health model in 2016 after decades of reports about human rights violations in asylums. Now\, clients are being deinstitutionalized from psychiatric hospitals and transitioned back to their households. However\, this reform has been met with an unexpected increase in mutual suspicion as well as practices of supervision and accusation that challenge two assumptions: that there is a community\, and that care can be performed there.\n\nIn this talk\, I explore how the Community Mental Health model and the process of psychiatric deinstitutionalization are transforming the everyday lives of residents of Ciudad Norte\, an impoverished district located at the outskirts of Lima\, where the reform started. Drawing on 18 months (2021-2022) of ethnographic fieldwork\, I evidence how this reform is not a withdrawal from the state\, but a series of interventions that recalibrate residents’ subjectivities. Residents are encouraged to report neighbors’ behaviors that might indicate a mental health problem or poor care for the mentally ill\, blurring the lines between truth and rumor\, care and coercion\, informing on and helping out. These practices of reportage and accusation—that I call suspicion as care—are informed by the mental health reform\, the legacies of political violence in the 1980s\, the Fujimori dictatorship in the 1990s\, and the global health enterprise.\"\n\nJulio Villa-Palomino is an anthropologist of mental health working at the intersections of Latin American studies and Surveillance studies. He received his Ph.D. from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is currently a fellow in the University of Michigan Society of Fellows.\n\nJulio’s research explores Perú’s transition from mental health care in psychiatric hospitals to a Community Mental Health model. His work has been funded by the National Science Foundation\, the Wenner-Gren Foundation\, and the Society for Psychological Anthropology. Julio's public-facing and community-oriented work has resulted in the implementation of a job support program for people diagnosed with severe mental illness\, the creation of a digital platform for mental health advocacy\, and collaboration with Peru's National Institute of Mental Health.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Algebraic Geometry: Frobenius Lifts
DESCRIPTION:In order to study algebraic varieties of positive characteristics\, it is sometimes fruitful to think about their lifts to characteristic 0 or infinitesimal lifts. For example\, in the work of Deligne and Illusie\, an infinitesimal liftability was a key ingredient for studying the degeneration of Hodge to de Rham spectral sequence. In this talk\, we will discuss a particular type of lifting of varieties where we also lift the Frobenius morphism. This “Frobenius lift” has quite strong cohomological consequences\, so we expect this to be rare. In fact\, a conjecture of Achinger\, Witaszek and Zdanowicz predicts that smooth projective varieties with Frobenius lifts are roughly built out of toric varieties and abelian varieties\, and we will illustrate this conjecture by examples.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Higgs category of a bordered surface\, after Merlin Christ (Combinatorics seminar)
DESCRIPTION:Labardini-Fragoso's classical construction allows to associate an ice quiver with potential to a bordered surface.  The corresponding Higgs category (in the sense of Yilin Wu) categorifies the cluster algebra (with non invertible boundary coefficients) associated to the surface by Fomin--Shapiro--Thurston. In recent work\, Merlin Christ has given a completely different description of this category as the \"1-periodic topological Fukaya category\". He obtains it by simplifying Haiden-Katzarkov-Kontsevich's construction of the topological Fukaya category associated with the surface. Our aim is to present Christ's construction and\, if time permits\, the ongoing project of extending it to cluster algebras appearing in higher Teichmuller theory.

DESCRIPTION:“Architecture is the art and science of continually refurbishing the surface of our planet so it better fits the way we want to live\, work and play.”\n\nBjarke Ingels founded BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group in 2005 after co-founding PLOT Architects in 2001 and working at OMA in Rotterdam. Bjarke defines architecture as the art and science of making sure our cities and buildings fit with the way we want to live our lives. Through careful analysis of local culture and climate\, the ever-changing patterns of contemporary life\, and the ebbs and flows of the global economy\, Bjarke believes in the idea of information-driven design as the driving force for his creative process.\n\nNamed one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by Time Magazine in 2016\, Bjarke has designed and completed award-winning buildings globally. Bjarke was appointed Knight of the French Order des Arts et des Lettres and the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Dannebrog in 2019 and 2018\, respectively. In 2021\, he was selected as an ambassador of the EU’s New European Bauhaus. He was named an Honorary Fellow by the AIA in 2020\, the RIBA in 2015 and the RAIC in 2014. The Wall Street Journal recognized Bjarke as Innovator of the Year in 2011\, the same year he received the Danish Crown Prince’s Culture Prize. Bjarke was also awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2004 and the ULI Award for Excellence in 2009. Alongside his architectural practice\, Bjarke has taught at Harvard University\, Yale University\, Columbia University and Rice University and is an honorary professor at the Royal Academy of Arts\, School of Architecture in Copenhagen. He is a frequent public speaker and continues to hold lectures in venues such as TED\, WIRED\, AMCHAM\, 10 Downing Street\, the World Economic Forum and many more.\n\nThis memorial lecture was established to recognize John Dinkeloo’s extraordinary contributions to architecture and commemorate excellence in architectural design. DESCRIPTION:The spherical Deligne complex is a simplicial complex introduced in Deligne's work when he studied the K(pi\,1) problem for some complex hyperplane arrangement complements. The complex is homotopic to a wedge of spheres\, and bear some similarities with spherical buildings\, though it is not a building. While the topology of this complex prevent a CAT(0) metric on it\, we show that it contains large pieces supporting equivariant non-positive curvature metric. As an application\, we deduce new results on the K(pi\,1) conjecture for several classes of Artin groups.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Western Fantasies: American Fame and the Indigenous Ironworkers that Built America
DESCRIPTION:The Kanien’keha:ka (Mohawk) ironworker has become synonymous with New York City. Celebrated for their daring balancing acts hundreds of feet in the air while constructing iconic landmarks\, Kanien’keha:ka ironworkers have made a distinct impact on New York City since the 1920s. As their fame grew worldwide in the second half of the twentieth century\, the “Mohawk ironworker” evolved into a mythical and allegorical figure in New York City folklore and a fantasy of the Western imagination.\n \nAssociate Professor Allan Downey will discuss this paper and associated animation which will illustrate the complex\, intersecting ways popular discourse on Indigenous ironworking has influenced contemporary perceptions of Indigenous masculinity. The project explores Indigenous narratives of this history as acts of community resurgence\, intellectual sovereignty\, and restoration that offers a markedly different interpretation of Indigenous history.\n\nAllan Downey is Dakelh\, Nak’azdli Whut’en\, Canada Research Chair in Indigenous History\, Nationhood\, and Self-Determination\, and Associate Professor of History and Indigenous Studies Department at McMaster University. Allan is the co-director of Rotinonshón:ni Ironworkers (2020) and the author of The Creator’s Game (UBC Press\, 2018) which received several national awards including the 2019 Canada Prize from the Canadian Federation of the Humanities and Social Sciences. Allan is currently writing his second book titled Nationhood Rising: The Indigenous Ironworkers that Built America set to be released in 2026.

Created in VIM VIGOR's signature aesthetic\, blending robust physicality with daring theatrical and emotional expression\, this work examines Dracula's insatiable hunger as a reflection of modern loneliness. It also addresses the intersection of horror and gender\, depicting how the genre eroticizes and consumes the female body. Set against an original sound score by Marshall Chadbourne\, DRACULA captures the essence of human storytelling and the monsters we create to navigate our lives.\n\nDRACULA features choreography and performances by Shannon Gillen\, Jason Cianciulli\, Tzveta Kassabova\, Katherine Kiessling\, Lauren Roebuck and Claire Schick. Visitors are encouraged to attend in Halloween attire or costume!\n\n\n\nObservatory Tours that begin at 8:00\, 8:30\, 9:00\, or 9:30pm. A 1 hour walk-through tour of the Detroit Observatory. Includes Historic Telescope Observing with the Fitz refractor. Registration is required\, but absent slots will be offered on a first come\, first serve basis.\nHistoric Telescope Observing that begins at 8:00pm. Includes telescope observing with the historic Fitz refractor. Walk-ins welcome\, but space is limited.\n\n\nAll visitors\, including walk-ins\, are welcome to patio telescope observing and all hands-on activities at the observatory! Telescope observing is only if weather permits. Please only register for one time slot. Missed time slots will be made available to walk-ins\, so please arrive on time.

At each open house\, members of SAS operate the telescopes and the planetarium of the Angell Hall Observatory. Visitors can view astronomical objects through the 8\" and 0.4m telescopes (weather permitting)\, watch a planetarium show on a number of interesting topics\, or learn about the cosmos from a presentation.
