SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Performance:Of Thee I Sing
DESCRIPTION:Do not miss George and Ira Gershwin’s satirical comedy about a presidential election\, the first musical to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The original Broadway production opened at the Music Box Theatre in NYC (designed by the architect of the State Theatre\, C. Howard Crane) in December 1931. This concert-style production will shine a spotlight on the Gershwin brothers’ music and feature U-M faculty\, performers from U-M’s Musical Theater Program\, and a Broadway scale orchestra. Contemporary theater critic Charles Isherwood said\, \"the laughter that greets the show today is tinged with surprise at how eerily some of its jokes seem to take precise aim\, from decades back\, at current affair. A politician dismisses Abraham Lincoln's pronouncement about not being able to fool all of the people all the time by remarking: 'It's different nowadays. People are bigger suckers.' ...it serves as a sigh-inducing argument for the enduring follies of American politics.\" This very special election year presentation is one-night only.\n\nOF THEE I SING is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals. www.concordtheatricals.com\n\nSponsored by Arbor Brewing\, Michigan Medicine\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the U-M Gershwin Initiative.

SUMMARY:Performance:Resonant Soundscapes
DESCRIPTION:Garrett Schumann\, Sara Tea\, and Julie Zhu invite the community to reflect in a wash of electronic and acoustic sound at the first event of the Resonant Soundscapes performance series on the evening of Sunday\, November 3. Join us from 5:30–6 pm for a sound tour of the Charles Baird Carillon\, Burton Memorial Tower\, and Ingalls Mall that features carillon improvisation and an ambient electronic headphone listening experience.\n\nAttendees are invited to use earbuds and smartphones to listen to new electronic music created by Schumann and Tea as they explore Burton Memorial Tower and the surrounding area\, all while accompanied by Zhu's improvised carillon performance.\n\nThe presentation blends the sound of bells with electronic textures to emphasize the meaningful resonances that emerge between individuals and the space they occupy.\n\nThe Resonant Soundscapes performance series is supported by the University of Michigan Arts Initiative and the Ann Arbor District Library. Free and open to the public.\n\nVisit resosounda2.com for more information.

SUMMARY:Performance:Full Cord w/sg Wilson Thicket
DESCRIPTION:When it comes to movers and shakers in the bluegrass world\, Full Cord is a super-group on the rise. After winning the prestigious 2022 Telluride Bluegrass Band Competition in Colorado\, the Michigan-based group followed that with another much-coveted honor when the International Bluegrass Music Association named Full Cord its “Momentum Award Band of the Year.” While mandolinist Brian Oberlin notes the band’s music “is new and fresh to the ears of seasoned bluegrass fans\,” the bluegrass traditions in Full Cord have deep roots. \n\nThe group’s members – Oberlin\, guitarist Eric Langejans\, bassist Todd Kirchner and fiddler Grant Flick – boast decades of musical artistry\, with experience in popular performing bands from Michigan to Oregon. And with the recent addition of award-winning\, Colorado-based banjoist Ricky Mier\, Full Cord is ready to follow in the footsteps of fellow Michigan bluegrass icons Billy Strings and Greensky Bluegrass as yet another star in the making.\n\nhttps://fullcord.net/home
