SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\n*The exhibition is cosponsored by the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Steve Glazer Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Steve Glazer earned his BFA in art with a concentration in ceramics from Eastern Michigan University\, a master’s degree in art from Central Michigan University\, and MFA in fine arts and ceramics from Indiana State University. Since 2004\, Glazer has been lead faculty and head of ceramics at Henry Ford College\, and former faculty of Concord College (WV) and North Dakota State University. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the country.\n\nThroughout his adult life the art of Steve Glazer has been done as a response to his environment. From a series of shadow box type pieces containing life like ceramic fish while teaching at a Catholic woman’s college\, to building 8’ tall ceramic “skyscrapers” that barely fit into the display spaces while teaching in North Dakota\, where no skyscrapers exist\, and then creating installations commenting on living in Appalachia while teaching in southern West Virginia. After returning home to Detroit\, Glazer began his griot series\, the “Motor City Griot Society” masks\, the faces of the superheroes that will save Detroit\, and more recently the “Motor City Griot Patrol” creatures that will protect the city of Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Susan Moran Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Susan Moran’s work is inspired by the natural world and our place in it. She collects and arranges images\, builds and subtracts\, and uses processes that suit the concepts and gives the pieces a reason for existing as textiles. Simultaneously she strives to make the medium influence the outcome in such a way that cloth and image meld together. Moran uses silkscreen\, shibori\, and stitching to embed images from her daily walks into the fabric. it's important that the work builds slowly\, involving meditative processes that connect her to the cloth and the source of the design.\n\nGallery hours: Monday-Friday\, 9 am to 5pm or by appointment serrag@med.umich.edu

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Making the Invisible Visible: Reducing Disparities Via Personally Relevant Interventions
DESCRIPTION:The mental health needs of people of color are largely invisible because they underutilize mental health services and are not the focus of research. These mental health utilization disparities have persisted for at least six decades. Neither evidence-based treatments nor culturally-adapted treatments adequately address the individual needs of people of color. People of color may not use mental health services because services are not: (a) personally relevant\; or (b) accessible. Our neuroscience data suggest that pragmatic\, problem-solving approaches are the most personally relevant for Asian Americans\, the least likely ethnic group to use mental health services. In this talk\, I discuss the development of the Mind Boba app to make psychotherapy more personally relevant and accessible to Asian Americans.\n\nAbout the speaker: Gordon Nagayama Hall is an Emeritus Professor of Psychology at the University of Oregon. Dr. Hall received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Fuller Theological Seminary. He started his career as a psychologist at Western State Hospital in Washington state. Dr. Hall later was a Professor of Psychology at Kent State University and Penn State University. He served as President of the American Psychological Association (APA) Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues (Division 45) and as President of the Asian American Psychological Association. He was Editor of Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology. His textbook Multicultural Psychology is in its 4th Edition. Dr. Hall received the Lifetime Achievement Award from APA Division 45 and an APA Presidential Citation for his extraordinary leadership in advancing multicultural psychology. His research interests are in culture and mental health with a particular interest in Asian Americans. He currently has NIMH funding to develop the Mind Boba problem-solving therapy app for Asian Americans. Dr. Hall serves on the Board of Directors of the DisOrient Asian American Film Festival of Oregon.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Change it Up! To Stop Anti-Black Racism: Part 2\, Writing Your Bystander Intervention Script Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Change it Up! To Stop Anti-Black Racism (CiU!ABR) program has conducted bystander intervention training workshops for the College of Engineering since 2020 and for the wider university community since the fall of 2023. Participant feedback and the overall goals of the program necessitated a second workshop where participants could continue to practice their bystander intervention skills. The Writing Your Bystander Intervention Script (WYBIS) Workshop allows participants to take a situation from their real lives\, then work through intervention strategies to develop a script for the future. Participants will explore their goals for intervention\, the different types of microaggressions\, the impact of fight/flight/freeze\, and other concepts through partner and small group discussion.\nTo participate in WYBIS\, you must have previously attended a CiU!ABR workshop.\nThis workshop is designed for University of Michigan master’s students\, doctoral students\, and postdoctoral fellows. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | A Quantum Computer as an Axion Dark Matter Detector
DESCRIPTION:The QCD axion model solves the longest standing problem in fundamental physics – the vanishing of the neutron electric dipole moment – while also providing a cosmological origin story for dark matter. While present axion dark matter search experiments are limited by quantum zero point noise\, new single microwave photon receivers based on superconducting qubits provide orders of magnitude noise reduction below the standard quantum limit. Using advanced quantum information processing techniques currently in development\, next generation experiments will be the first to deploy a rudimentary quantum computer as the front end for the readout electronics. Combined with recent advances in magnetic field-compatible microwave cavities\, these experiments will finally reach sensitivity to the predicted axion photon couplings over a decade in mass in the 10-100 micro-eV range.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series: The Social Psychology of Systemic Racism (Tiffany Brannon)
DESCRIPTION:Nov. 4\, 2024\, Tiffany Brannon (UCLA)\n\nDiversity can Yield Dividends: Harnessing Cultural Psychological Insights to Foster Social\, Health\, and Intergroup Benefits Tied to Anti-racism Efforts\n\nThe mere presence of anti-racism efforts has the powerful potential to mitigate social inequalities linked to historic and contemporary racism. However\, the presence and promise of anti-racism efforts are threatened by (1) policies and practices that are performative and culturally detached from the lived realities of marginalized social groups (e.g.\, racial/ethnic minorities) and (2) zero-sum claims that portray initiatives aimed at reducing systemic racism as benefitting marginalized social groups at the expense of more dominant social groups. Harnessing cultural psychological insights\, this talk explicitly addresses such threats. It provides empirical evidence that anti-racism efforts when driven by actionable change and imbued with meaningful cultural inclusion can yield dividends that are non-zero-sum— related to positive outcomes that are experienced among marginalized groups without costs to dominant groups. Across studies that leverage diverse methods\, anti-racism is examined as behaviors\, attitudes\, and policies (e.g.\, Black Lives Matter marches\, diversity curriculum practices). The talk highlights associations between anti-racism efforts and consequential life outcomes including social connectedness and polarization in social networks\, physical and mental well-being\, as well as intergenerational (infant) health and mortality. Holistically\, the talk presents findings that demonstrate the potential for societal thriving as positive outcomes are observed across social groups (e.g.\, among marginalized and dominant groups). It centers marginalized groups and underscores the importance of intergroup approaches for intervention strategies that are optimally positioned to realize more equitable outcomes. Theory and applied implications for minimizing and combating backlash to anti-racism efforts (e.g.\, book bans\, anti-diversity state policies) are discussed.\n\nThe RCGD Seminar Series on the Social Psychology of Systemic Racism meets Mondays from 3:30 to 5 at ISR Thompson 1430. When speaker permission is given\, events will be recorded and posted within a few weeks to YouTube.\n\nThe Social Psychology of Systemic Racism\nWhat are the points of connection between structures and individuals when we think about bias? In the Fall 2024 RCGD Seminar Series “The Social Psychology of Systemic Racism\,” an all-star lineup of behavioral and political psychologists will define what\, in their words\, makes systemic racism systemic\, and how extra-individual levels of analysis could be incorporated in social psychological theories and methods.\n\nGroup Dynamics Seminar Series\nThe Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. The seminar series runs every semester on a theme chosen by faculty organizer/s who are affiliated with the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the Institute for Social Research. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent themes have included political polarization\, evolution and human behavior\, and cultural psychology.\n\nBio\nTiffany N. Brannon received her Ph.D. and M.A. in Social Psychology from Stanford University and her B.A. in Psychology from Florida International University. Her research examines socio-cultural identities in negatively stereotyped groups such as Latino/a/x and African Americans\; and she investigates the potential for these identities to serve as psychological resources— strengths that can facilitate a variety of individual and intergroup benefits. Her research has been published in top academic journals including Proceedings for the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS)\, Psychological Science\, American Psychologist\, the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology\, Social Issues and Policy Review\, and the Journal of Social Issues. She is a recipient of the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues’ (SPSSI) Otto Klineberg Intercultural and International Relations Award and Michele Alexander Early Career Award for Scholarship and Service. She is also a recipient of the Early Career Psychologists Achievement Award from the American Psychological Association (APA) Committee on Early Career Psychologists (CECP).\n\nShe is the editor for the Diversity\, Inequality & Culture section of Social and Personality Psychology Compass (SPPC) and an inaugural member of the Aspen Institute’s Research Advisory Group for Belonging\, Meaning\, Well-being and Purpose (BMWP).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GLNT: The Swan conductor function of an l-adic sheaf on rigid annulus is convex
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: For a given étale l-adic sheaf F on rigid space X\, the Swan conductor\, a measure of wild ramification of F along the special fiber of a formal model of X\, is the l-adic analog of the radius of convergence of solutions of p-adic differential equations on X. I will show (when X is an annulus) that the function defined by the Swan conductor has properties that mirror those of the radius of convergence function.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:ISRMT Seminar: The Riemann problem for a discrete conservation law
DESCRIPTION:The hydrodynamics of a system of conservation laws can often be understood by studying solutions to a Riemann problem\, i.e.\, the evolution of step initial data in a hyperbolic system. When dispersion compensates for the large gradients induced by this initial data\, wave-breaking is often resolved by a dispersive shock wave (DSW). An active area of research is the investigation of quantitative features of DSWs in continuum models arising in physical applied mathematics. This talk leverages modern techniques to investigate solutions of the Riemann problem for a semi-discrete conservation law. The semi-discrete model is obtained by applying a first-order centered difference scheme to the spatial derivative of the Hopf equation. Solutions to the Riemann problem reveal a surprisingly elaborate set of solutions to this example system. In addition to discrete analogs of well-known dispersive hydrodynamic solutions—rarefaction waves (RWs) and DSWs—additional unsteady solution families and finite-time blow-up are observed and characterized. We will also compare the dynamics of the Riemann problem to an integrable discretization of the spatial derivative.\n\nEmail eblackst@umich.edu for the zoom link.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Periodicity of T-Systems for Bipartite Recurrent Quivers
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we follow Galashin and Pylyavskyy's paper to give an elementary criterion and a classification of bipartite recurrent quivers that exhibit periodicity of T-systems. After reviewing some prerequisites\, we will first state the graph theoretical condition for periodicity and discuss the classification. Here we will see a reappearance of a periodicity result presented by Bernhard Keller in his colloquium talk last week. Then\, we will discuss three other equivalent conditions for periodicity and their significance through several examples. A quick sketch of the proof of the main theorem will be given if time permits.

SUMMARY:Performance:Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards
DESCRIPTION:“A stunning\, forward-looking sound that charts a path for innovation in folk music” —PopMatters\n\nLaura Cortese might best be described as a sonic magpie: a curious and resourceful adventurer traversing great distances\, collecting melodies and rhythms that glitter like jewels in the sun. Driven by the gravitational pull of human connection\, her tendency towards exploration and collaboration have led her into countless niches\, each providing its own unique feather with which to decorate her distinct and ever-evolving sound.\n\nStarting as a young child picking up the fiddle for the first time\, Cortese has used these strings to tie herself to others\, forging connections across age\, genre\, and identity. After a Californian childhood filled with Celtic music camps\, Cortese went on to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston.\n\nHer early career explorations didn’t end with performance though. Cortese also co-founded the Boston Celtic Music Festival\, and later they Miles of Music Camp. The goal of this camp is not only to introduce these diverse musicians to new genres and musical catalogs\, but to build community and spark creativity. She has toured across the globe\, acting as an ambassador of American music on behalf of the US State Department by performing and teaching in India\, Kazakhstan\, Uzbekistan\, Bangladesh\, Estonia\, Greece\, Ukraine\, and Montenegro. Now\, she holds space and builds community for musicians in Belgium as the co-founder of the monthly Bright Lights Session in Ghent.\n\nAll of these threads have joined together\, culminating in her work leading the musicians’ collective known as Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards. Here\, she showcases all of her varied experience and expertise–as a master fiddler\, an instructor\, a leader\, and a musical collaborator–using it to craft a new sound from whole cloth: a nearly symphonic hybrid of countless traditions and influences\, full of layered vocal harmonies and rich interplays of virtuosic string instrumentation.
